inja Sushi opened in Apple Valley in 2009 and has created quite a name for itself because of its imaginative menu and superb dishes. Sushi restaurants are very popular with High Desert diners, and Peter An, owner and the “Ninja sushi” learned from his parents who have opened several sushi restaurants in the area. Peter came to the United States when he was five years old and worked with his parents all through school. He learned the business from the ground up, busing tables and then, at the ripe old age of 16, becoming a waiter. He has a degree in botany and scientific research but really loves working in his own Ninja Sushi, a family friendly establishment with a sushi bar as well as tables. Peter has created a wonderfully tasty “Signature Roll” with Cajun seared salmon, avocado, cucumber, and spring (salad) mix placed neatly on a bed of sushi rice atop a sheet of nori seaweed. After covering with a piece of clear plastic and rolled tightly, the plastic is removed and the roll is sliced into bite-sized pieces, plated with a “flower” of pickled ginger and a “leaf” of wasabi mustard. The final touches include a drizzle of ponzu sauce, a tangy citrus-based soy sauce. Sushi can be eaten with the fingers or, for those who are skilled in the art of Japanese dining, with chopsticks. The Signature Roll is $9.50 per person. Sushi rolls can contain raw fish — sashimi — or be completely vegetarian. Texture and color are part of the fun, and the adage that we “eat with our eyes” is never more true than when one sits at a sushi bar and selects favorites dishes. Sushi is definitely made to share. And Ninja Sushi’s Signature Roll is the perfect signature dish for the High Desert’s hungry masses.

Family, and feeding yours, is everything Comfortable vibe follows Mile High Cafe’s relocation from airport to Old Town Hesperia By Martial Haprov For the Daily Press

H

ESPERIA — Walk into the Mile High Cafe in Old Town and you might as well be joining a family for a meal. That’s the atmosphere here, one created and bol-

stered by the restaurant’s ownership, employees and diners alike, all who, in one way or another, call Mile High their home. General Manager Paul Lyell likens the cafe to that place “where everyone knows your name.” “We’re kind of like

the ‘Cheers’ of the High Desert,” says Lyell, whose mother Michele Lyell and stepfather Benny Chavez opened Mile High 13 years ago and whose sister Aimee Chavez also works here. “Our employees are family; everybody hangs out with each other. When one table gets up, they say ‘Hi’ to three other tables because everyone here knows everyone.” Mile High Cafe moved to the location in Old Town Hesperia after spending many years at its previous airport location just 4.9 miles away, Paul said. After the move, Paul said he heard that maybe they’d moved to a mountain community or downright closed for good, but that’s not the case at all. “We needed a bigger space — we kind of outgrew where we were,” Paul said. “With the bigger space, we’re able to serve

more volume. On a Sunday at the old place, the wait was usually about 45 minutes, but here we can cut it down to half that time.” But even with the shortened wait on any given Sunday, the amount of regulars who followed the restaurant to Old Town — Paul says virtually “all of them” — and the number of people who continue to discover Mile High Cafe is indicative of the quality the restaurant is committed to serving every day. “We take pride in everything we cook,” Paul said. “Just about everything we make is from scratch. And we’re definitely known for our specials.” Paul said the cafe has around 140 different items they rotate on the specials board daily. He said some of those specials come directly from their regular menu but, for instance at lunchtime, include a cup of

homemade soup or chili at a special price. Mile High Cafe’s biggest sellers are their omelets, including their enchilada omelet, which Paul says incorporates red or green sauce, corn tortillas and ground beef and beef chorizo. Their carne asada omelet, only offered on weekends, uses USDA prime carne asada. “And I’ve been told we have the best ribeye in town,” Paul said. On Fridays, Mile High Cafe has fish-themed specials including wahoo and beer-battered fish tacos, housemade New England Clam Chowder and fish and chips. And for those looking for a fun Taco Tuesday chow spot, they open from 4 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday. “We’re known for big portions on pretty much everything we offer,” Paul said. “You’re not gonna go

away hungry.” The restaurant also serves beer and wine, including a wine-based “Bloody Caesar” they make, similar to a Bloody Mary but incorporating Clamato. They’re listed high for the local area on a popular social media site if one searches for “Bloody Mary.” “A guy from back East was working out here in the High Desert restoring private aircraft and wanted a good Bloody Mary,” Paul said. “He searched for it on ‘Yelp’ and found us.” Mile High Cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day except when they close on Thanksgiving Day and three days for Christmas, at 8832 Orange St. in Hesperia. Find them on social media by searching “Mile High Cafe Hesperia” or call the restaurant at 760-947-8844.

‘Best’ and Los Domingos go hand-in-hand Apple Valley Mexican restaurant and lounge is a regular ‘Best of the Desert’ winner

By Kathy Young For Dining Out

vvdailypress.com

eing named “Best Mexican Food” and “Best Sunday Brunch” by readers of the Daily Press makes Los Domingos AV a standout when it comes to delicious Mexican food and drink. Los Domingos’ first location opened in Barstow 30 years ago. Fa m i l y o w n e d , t h e restaurant shows pride in everything from its colorful decor to the fabulous dishes on the menu. L o s D o m i n go s AV came to Apple Valley 10 years ago, and as you can see from the Best of the Desert awards bestowed upon the restaurant by the readers of the Daily Press that Los Domingos is a very popular place to go. Their Ladies Night each Wednesday from 8 p.m. to closing features Karaoke, a dance party, 25 percent off appetizers and discounts on well drinks, domestic draft beer and margaritas and Jaeger bombs. The Sunday all-youcan-eat Champagne brunch is served from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. And speaking of cantina drinks, their Mojito — fresh lime and mint muddled with organic agave nectar, then shaken with white rum and poured over ice — comes in both strawber-

ry and cucumber. Mini tacos, three to a serving, make a delicious appetizer. Choose f ro m c h i c ke n , c a r n e asada or beef — or go for variety and order one of each. The tacos are served with guacamole and pico de gallo. Taco salad is ground beef served in a flour tortilla shell with beans and lettuce and topped with sour cream, guacamole and cheese. Los Domingos AV’s Fajita — a signature dish — features marinated shrimp, chicken and steak grilled with onions and bell pepper, served sizzling at tableside along with rice, beans, tortillas, pico de gallo and guacamole. L o s D o m i n go s AV is proud of their steak menu — everything from New York Strip and the new Chipotle Rib Eye Steak topped with chipotle -infused butter and served with onions and peppers to Jalapeno Rib Eye Steak and an 18-ounce Angus Porterhouse Steak, seasoned and charbroiled to order. Burgers, charbroiled chicken and wraps are available, and “Fantastic Desserts” finish every meal with flair. L o s D o m i n go s AV caters, too. Ask for a catering menu on your next visit.
