not just with content knowledge, but also with the necessary skills and values to thrive in a fast-changing and globalised future. They build on the strengths of our current system, and seek to raise primary education to a new level. (For more details on recommendations by PERI, visit http:// www.moe.gov.sg/initiatives/peri/). This is good news for all of us as we can foresee the many exciting changes that are going to take place in the primary education arena in the years to come.

Principal’s Foreword Dearest pupils, parents and readers, I am elated to be able to communicate with you through this newsletter once again. You can see that our newsletter has taken on a new look with a broader coverage to include feedback from pupils and participation of parents in school organized workshops. Many of you would have heard about Ministry of Education’s decision to accept the recommendations of the Primary Education Review and Implementation (PERI) Committee, chaired by Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Education, to enhance the quality of primary education. The proposed changes to primary education seek to ensure that our young are equipped

Highlights This is where it all began….

The proposed changes recommended by PERI serve as an affirmation of Xingnan’s philosophy which advocates providing a balanced education and a supportive environment (that excites the mind, builds character and enhances well-being) to help every Xingnanian reach his/her highest potential. Some of these recommendations have already taken place at Xingnan. For example, since 2007, Xingnan had already started to include modules of Performing Arts for Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils. As we work towards implementing PERI’s recommendations, Xingnan firmly believes that parents and other stakeholders can be active partners in this journey. I have shared with pupils and encouraged them to adopt the “ERA” approach to learning. It is important that as pupils participate in any programme or activity, they should focus on meeting its objectives and not go through the activity mindlessly. Pupils can only EXPERIENCE it fully by being active listeners, engaged learners and caring team players. At the same time, pupils need to

Twinning pg4 Programme to Suzhou

China 2009

enjoy the activity so that they reap maximum benefits from it. Pupils should also REFLECT on their learning experiences through active self-questioning. They should constantly ask themselves questions like: Have I achieved the objectives of the activity? What are the areas that I have done well in? What are some areas I need improvement? Self-questioning stimulates thinking and this, in turn, will allow them to gain knowledge from the activities they have participated in. Finally, pupils need to ACT on their experiences and reflection. They should apply the knowledge they have acquired to their daily lives and other new situations. When they constantly practise “ERA”, they will master the art of making good use of their strengths and avoid repeating the same mistakes. If pupils apply the ERA approach conscientiously, I strongly believe that they will develop “the Passion to Learn” as espoused by the Xingnan’s vision! On an ending note, the school welcomes the views of parents and we know that we can count on your constructive feedback and ideas. The school will provide you with regular updates and engage you in dialogues as and when necessary so that we can help you keep abreast of what is happening in Xingnan and the education landscape at large. This newsletter is one such avenue. As the saying goes, when parents and schools work together, our children are the winners! Let us all work hand in hand for the betterment of our pupils.

LOWER PRIMARY

The Lower Primary Parents’ Workshop The Lower Primary Parents’ Workshop was held on 21 February 2009. The workshop started at 9 a.m. with an opening address by Mr Gau Poh Teck, our Principal. Mrs Carina Kong, the School Counsellor, then shared some parenting tips with parents who were present. After that, parents proceeded to various classrooms to attend the concurrent sessions that they had signed up for. Ideas and resources were shared with parents during these concurrent sessions. Parents who attended the workshop found the sessions to be very beneficial.

Maths at the Air port The P3 pupils attended a Math Trail on 3 April 2009 at Changi Airport Terminal 3. The Math Trail aimed to improve pupils’ understanding of Mathematical concepts and to help them develop creative and critical thinking skills. Through this outdoor Math lesson, the pupils were able to see how the learning of mathematical concepts of measurement is closely related with real–life examples. The pupils enjoyed themselves and had a wonderful Math experience. The pictures tell them all…

Frolicking at the Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom 265 Primary 2 pupils went on a Learning Journey to the Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom at Sentosa as an extension of their classroom learning. Parents, as partners in their children’s learning process, helped out as parent volunteers in this Learning Journey.

During the Learning Journey, the pupils were led by informative guides, who explained to them all about butterflies and insects and instilled in them an awareness of the need to take care of our tropical environment so as to protect the species from becoming extinct. Some pupils even had ‘close encounters’ with the insects as they experienced holding and touching them. The pupils not only enjoyed the trip but the wealth of knowledge they gained from the trip was evident in their Interdisciplinary Project Work which they completed as a follow-up to the Learning Journey.

Since 2007, Xingnan has been planning at least 2 learning journeys for each level to provide authentic learning experiences for our pupils. These learning journeys also serve as an extension of the pupils’ learning in Mrs Falicita Tan the classrooms. Photographs by Mrs Kumar page

MANAGEMENT

This is where it all began…. I have had the honour of having been a part of the Xingnan Family for the past 16 years. I still remember quite vividly the first day when I reported to school as a beginning teacher, fresh out of the National Institute of Education. Mr Leong Chee Kong, the Principal then, welcomed me to his office for a briefing and in no time, I was ushered to my table and introduced to the teachers who have since become my life-long friends. Well, the rest is history… My personal philosophy is simple, and not uncommon amongst many teachers I know. I carry this fundamental belief that every child who comes my way is special and has his/her own special talents and abilities and that the challenge posed to me is then to discover and unleash this potential. I have truly enjoyed the journey I have had, from a classroom teacher to now a Vice-Principal in the very school I consider my home. Of course, in my years in the educational sector, I also have had the privilege to learn from many. The list is not exhaustive but they include the Superintendents, Principals and VicePrincipals who have believed in me and given me the numerous opportunities, my fellow colleagues who have stood by me and supported me, the parents and stakeholders who worked hand in hand with me and of course, not forgetting the many pupils whose paths crossed mine in many different ways – they are the ones who brought out the best (sometimes the worst) in me and fulfilled my journey as a teacher. 2009 will continue to be a year of excitement and new opportunities for all pupils, staff and key partners of the school. To name a few, Xingnan is committed, through the Character Education@Xingnan, to develop the softer skills in our pupils. We have launched the School Family Education (SFE) Programme offered by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. SFE aims to enhance the quality of family life by making family life education resources and programmes easily available to parents, school staff and pupils. We have also stepped up on our Internationalisation programme to extend to our pupils and teachers another platform of learning beyond the Singapore context.

Mrs Ong Hui Khim

Xingnan is a school recognized for its rich traditions, culture of excellence and global outlook. I am proud to be a part of this. Together, we will embrace the changing educational landscape to prepare our pupils to be confident individuals and loyal citizens in this globalised world. Twinning Programme to Suzhou,

China 2009

On the first day of the March holidays, 35 Xingnanians, together with 5 teachers, Head of Department of Mother Tongue, Mr Tan Chong Hian and our Principal, Mr Gau Poh Teck, embarked on a week-long Twinning Programme to Suzhou Industrial Park Xingwan School. Xingnanians were warmly received by the teachers and pupils of Xingwan School. Soon, we were all learning, playing and eating with the pupils and teachers in Xingwan School! In addition to joining the local pupils in their classroom learning, we were given opportunities to attend pottery lessons and learn in their new inquiry-based Science laboratory where we put many scientific theories to test! A highlight of the programme was the home-stay with the local pupils. Each of the 35 Xingnanians was paired up with a local buddy and invited to stay overnight at the buddy’s house. Our young Chinese hosts took our pupils to the various attractions in the Suzhou Industrial Park and treated them to many local delicacies. It was certainly a memorable night for many of the pupils. During the Twinning Programme, we visited many places of interest in 3 major cities of Shanghai, Suzhou and Wuxi. In Shanghai, we ascended the Shanghai Pearl TV Tower to catch a glimpse of the Shanghai Night from above. We left our footprints on The Bund, The Shanghai Museum and Madame Tussauds, where we took photographs with many celebrities’ wax figures, including US President, Mr Barack Obama. In Suzhou, we visited the Suzhou Museum, Master of Nets Garden, Lion Grove Garden, Han Shan Temple and Golden Rooster Lake. In Wuxi, we visited the Three Kingdoms City where many of CCTV’s dramas were made. At the end of the 7 eventful days, both pupils and teachers had gained a lot from the experience. Not only did the participants gain a deeper insight of the Chinese culture, camaraderie was forged among pupils and they discovered the importance of teamwork. page

Mdm Juhariyah, a teacher from Xingnan who went on the trip shared her insights with us. She said, “This trip to Suzhou, China has been very rewarding in many ways. Suzhou is a land with a rich history and there are many old buildings that are still standing tall. They are a sight to behold. These buildings will certainly inspire the current and future generations to learn more about China’s history, just like how they have inspired me. With the help of my fellow teachers, pupils and our friends from Xingwan School, I have made new friends and even learnt how to speak simple words in the Chinese language. After looking at the dedication of the teachers in Xingwan School, I am convinced that wherever they are, educators always aim to bring out the best in the pupils. This learning journey to Suzhou allowed me to connect with the educators and people outside Singapore. I certainly returned with a greater appreciation for the past as well as the present and with a brighter outlook for the future.” Ms Neo Chai Lee

An Enlightening Trip

A life-time experience As a non-Chinese pupil, I am very happy to be given the opportunity to participate in this Twinning Programme to Suzhou. I like Suzhou as it is a beautiful place, with mesmerizing scenery and a lot of beautiful old sculptures. I noticed that Suzhou has many beautifully sculpted bridges. One famous place of interest we visited was Zhou Zhuang, also named “The Venice of the East”. That was really an eye-opener for me. To be honest, I am really proud to be one of the nonChinese Xingnanians to be selected for the twinning programme. When it was time for me to fly back to Singapore, I felt very sad to leave China. This trip has given me fond memories. But I still feel very happy to be back in school and to be able to share my memories with my friends. Nur Syahzanani (Primary 4D)

My trip to China has been very enlightening. I could see how big China is and what amazed me was how very independent and brave the children in China were. They seldom depend on their parents to get their chores done, unlike us in Singapore. Children in China also pay very close attention during lessons. I certainly believe that we have a lot to learn from them. Other than attending lessons in Suzhou Industrial Park Xingwan School, we also visited many places of interest in Suzhou, Wuxi and Shanghai. I learnt a little about China’s history in the Shanghai Museum. It was an eye-opener for me. I learnt that long ago in China, bronze was used to make coins. The coins came in different shapes and sizes and they displayed the emperor’s talents in calligraphy. I had a lot of fun and I learnt many new things from my teachers and friends outside the classroom. Cai Ning Xin Jocelyn (Primary 4E)

I want to visit China again Between 14 and 25 March, my friends, teachers and I went to China. We visited many places and learnt many things including the history of China. When we visited “Zhou Zhuang”, we saw big houses which were built many centuries ago. But the most memorable time was when Rui Ying and I went to our buddy’s house for the home-stay. Our buddy’s name is Tian Xi. Her mother is kind and she took us to a 3D movie. At Xingwan School, we had the opportunity to learn Mathematics with the local pupils and I felt that the Mathematics they learnt was complicated. Besides attending lessons at Xingwan School, we went to many places of interest in Shanghai, Suzhou and Wuxi. I wish to visit these places again when I have the opportunity. WHAT WILL YOU DEFEND?

Total Defence Day falls on 15 February every year. The theme for 2009 is ‘What Will You Defend?’. Xingnan Primary School commemorated Total Defence Day 2009 with a series of activities planned by the English Department. The activities, pertaining to each of the five aspects of Total Defence, were carried out from 9 February to 13 February 2009. As part of the programme, pupils and staff experienced the times when food resources were scarce. Sweet Potato Porridge was the only item sold in the canteen during recess. The activity allowed pupils and staff to appreciate food resources. The pupils also had the rare opportunity to sample Army Field Rations. Pupils also penned what they will defend on the “I will defend” card! Mr Vincent Chua

Friendship Day

This year, the International Friendship Day (IFD) fell on 17 April. Xingnan took this opportunity to introduce the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) that will be held in Singapore in 2010 through the activities planned for our pupils by the PE and Aesthetics Department. The principal shared on the significance of IFD. He explained that Singapore needs to build good friendly ties with as many countries as possible. At home, Singaporeans need to remain united, regardless of race, language or religion. The theme for this year’s IFD focused on “Building Friendship Through Sports”. A range of activities were carried out throughout the week for pupils’ active participation. During the week-long event, pupils visited the booths and display boards in the canteen throughout the week to read about The Olympics, YOG and Samoa. They also had the chance to exercise their creativity by designing a card shaped like Samoa and on every card, write an interesting piece of information about Samoa. Samoa is the designated YOG partner of Xingnan Primary School. The commemoration concluded with a Sports Carnival. Primary 3 to Primary 6 pupils had the opportunity to play different games using the rugby ball during the Sports Carnival. This is also a sport played by the Samoans. Pupils also displayed their knowledge of the Olympics, YOG and Samoa in the IFD Quiz which was held after the Sports Carnival.

This year’s International Friendship Day was a success as the pupils demonstrated the spirit of friendliness, perseverance and excellence through the activities. Mrs Rachel Ong

Hope for a Heart This year, the prefectorial board organized “Hope for a Heart’, a fund-raising project to help Mr Tan Lian Seng, our school’s gardener who helped beautify the school compound with his green fingers. In March this year, Mr Tan suffered a stroke. We were all shocked and missed him dearly. To help him financially, “Hope for a Heart” was launched school-wide immediately after the prefects’ investiture. A day was set aside for the collection. On that day, 2 groups of six executive members of the prefectorial board went around the school with large boxes for the raising of funds. Our peers, through their generous donations, proved to us that their hearts were much bigger. I felt very happy that many of them came forward to donate their own pocket money to help Mr Tan. On behalf of all Xingnanians, I hope that Mr Tan will be able to recover in due time. The cash collected can help express our appreciation to him for tending to the school’s garden.

News We are certainly proud to have the honour of clinching the Gold award for the School Digital Media Awards (SDMA) under the primary schools category. Our submission, entitled “The Singapore Story”, impressed the judges and members of the public who voted for us. Our sincere thanks goes out to our trainer Mrs Su, whose help was crucial to us. We were all smiles as we walked up the stage to receive our trophy and the cash award of $1000. This award brings us a step closer to our dreams of being experts in the I.C.T. field. WITS AND WORDS 2009! Our school has done exceptionally well in this year’s InterSchool Debating Championship organised by the Gifted Education Branch and Hwa Chong Institution. We sent in a team comprising the following pupils: Emily Blackburn (6F) Vijay Ramanujan (6F) Nicolas Blackburn (5C) Valerie Yeo (5C) In the 1st round on 17 March 2009, we met St. Andrew’s Junior School. It was an engaging battle in which our debaters trounced the opposition, thus progressing to the 2nd round. We then faced Nanyang Primary School. Our students, fresh from their previous victory, heartily defeated their more illustrious opponents and progressed on in the competition. The team then had time to prepare for the next round of debates which was held on 1 April 2009. Catholic High Primary School was our opponent in the 3rd round of the competition. page

• VOICES

Again, we managed to triumph due to the eloquence and preparedness of our speakers. Special mention should go to our speaker, Emily Blackburn, who was awarded the Best Speaker for the debate. Our fine run in the competition was halted in the 4th round. We matched up with Clementi Primary School. Though we performed commendably, the result was not in our favour. However, we are very proud of our journey as reaching this stage of the competition means that we are in the Top 8 out of 64 participating schools. The pupils in particular must be praised for putting in a lot of time and effort in preparing for their debates. Their performance in the competition is certainly commendable and heralds the promise of much more to come in the future.

News

Giving back to my Alma Mater When the National Institute of Education (NIE) posted me to Xingnan Primary School (XNPS) as a primary school teacher, I was joyous. Not everyone gets the golden opportunity to teach where one began. As a primary school pupil at Xingnan 12 years ago, it had always been my dream to be back to this very school as a teacher. And yes! My dream came true. When I stepped into XNPS on my first day as a teacher, the first thing I looked forward to was the familiar places and faces. Our school was undergoing Programme for Rebuilding and Improving Existing Schools (PRIME). There were major reshuffles among the rooms. Most importantly, I was reunited with many teachers who had taught me previously. The spirit of Xingnanians to build a culture of care and concern, then and now, remains. On 1 July 2006, a group of enthusiastic ex-Xingnanians and I established the Xingnan Primary School Alumni Association. We aim to create an avenue for ex-Xingnanians to reunite with their schoolmates, to relive and revisit the childhood memories of the good old school days and most importantly, to be given a chance to serve our alma mater and in doing so, to carry on the “Xingnan Spirit”.

Ms Chow Kar Yin Teacher Learning Support Co-ordinator Xingnan Primary School

Over the 3 years, we have successfully organised fruitful trips for the alumni members, current Xingnanians and their families. To date, we have had annual gatherings, yoga classes and even karaoke sessions for our alumni members. We look forward to seeing the growth of our alumni in the years to come.

Forever a Xingnanian Running along the corridors in Xingnan Primary School when I was no more than a wee kid; queuing up for my favourite ‘Lor Mee’ and playing at the parade square every recess, feeling a sense of pride as I don the green badge that says ‘Prefect’ and awaiting anxiously for the slip that decided the expression on my parents’ faces and the fate that awaited me when I reached home, were all memories that I hold dearly even up till today. However, little did I know that a decade later, I would be walking along the same corridors, alongside the same people who had lovingly nurtured me in the formative years of my life, as a fellow colleague. I am indeed fortunate to come back to my Alma Mater as a teacher. Although it has only been 5 months, the experience has been nothing short of fulfilling. It is only now that I realize and appreciate the immense role a teacher plays in the life of every pupil. My teachers, seemingly ordinary people, had played an extraordinary role in helping me to be who I am today. The word ‘extraordinary’ describes them perfectly; ordinary people who went the extra mile and made a difference in the lives of many. A deep felt appreciation goes to Mrs Ong, Mr Chang and Mr Tan, my three dearest teachers who not only passionately taught me but also imparted valuable life skills which I hold onto dearly till today.

Ms Teng Wei Yan Teacher Xingnan Primary School

Being a novice in teaching, I did what I could to follow the footsteps of the three incredible teachers of mine. It has indeed been a rollercoaster ride as I realized that teaching is not a simple feat. I am truly grateful to all my colleagues cum friends who have extended their help to a newbie like me. The friendships that I have forged here, I will treasure in the years to come. However, despite all the ups and downs I have experienced in these 5 months, I know that I will never regret my short stint in Xingnan as a teacher. Not only have I taught, but I have also learnt from the many adorable, young and unique individuals. Xingnanians are always amazing. I knew it then as a pupil and I know it now as a teacher. I also know that my fellow colleagues believe in each and every pupil, just as how my teachers believed in me then. Finally, my deepest admiration goes out to the unsung heroes whose hands uphold the young leaders of the future. And I can proudly declare to everyone in my life that I am and will forever be a Xingnanian. VOICES • page

LAUNCH OF SCHOOL FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION @ XINGNAN PRIMARY SCHOOL on 18 April 2009, Saturday School Family Education (SFE) Programme in Xingnan Primary School was officially launched on 18 April 2009 by Mr Gau Poh Teck, Principal of Xingnan Primary School, Dr Lim Kam Ming, Chairperson of Parent Support Group (PSG) and Ms Evelyn Khong, Manager of Fei Yue Community Services. SFE aims to enhance the quality of family life by making family life education resources easily available to parents, students, teachers and other school staff through the setting up of a family resource area and provision of family life education programmes. It is a programme aimed at the holistic development of individuals and families, and it seeks to impact 3 groups of the school community i.e. parents, staff and pupils. SFE adopts a holistic family learning model – equipping parents with effective parenting skills and training them to be parent facilitators, helping school staff to enhance their family life, and providing students with life skills training.

During the launch, the Principal officially announced that the school’s SFE coordinator is Mdm Mandy Hsu, Vice-Chairperson of PSG. The school believes that SFE is a wonderful platform to engage more parents either through involvement in school activities or participating in the many coming parent workshops that focus on active parental involvement, parent-child relationship and character or values education. By attending the programmes, parents will learn how to build strong relationships with their children because this will have much impact on the children’s academic achievements, attitudes and behaviour, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic or racial background and parents’ educational level. Finally, pupils will learn life skills that will empower and aid them in coping with life’s demands and imbuing them with the positive values and attitudes towards family, relationships and life. Public Service Week

Xingnan commemorated the Public Service Week 2009 on 15 May during the weekly Staff Contact Time. The day was also special for all staff as they came dressed in similar t-shirts printed exclusively for them. The t-shirts were designed and printed as part of the staff well-being programme. Mr Gau kicked off the commemoration with a speech which highlighted the roles staff play as members of the Public Service. This was then followed by a promotional ceremony held for 24 of our staff who have been promoted in recognition of their outstanding service and contribution. To reaffirm the commitment to the Service, staff recited the Public Service Pledge in unison. This also served as a reminder for all, of the shared mission to build a first class Public Service. Guided by the values of integrity, service and excellence, staff at Xingnan also pledged to continue to work towards providing the best learning opportunities for our pupils. The event ended successfully with a staff bonding lunch. Mrs Rachel Ong VOICES • page 11
