IN MEMORY OF 190-TH BIRTHDAY OF

FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY

«We have seen at last that we as a separate nation are original in the highest degree and that our aim is to create our own new native form, taken from our ground, from nation’ spirit and from nation’ inception. Our future activity’ character must be in the highest degree common to all mankind, russian idea maybe would be the synthesis of all ideas, which are beeing developing by Europe with such persistence and all courage in its different nationalities; maybe all hostility in this ideas will find its application and further development in russian nation.» F. Dostoevsky

HISTORY OF THE RUSSIAN FAT LITERARY JOURNAL THE HISTORY OF TWO HUNDRED YEARS OF ITS EXISTENCE THE EMERGENCE OF THE PHENOMENON OF RUSSIAN CULTURE ASSOCIATED WITH THE MIDDLE XVIII C WHEN ELIZABETH ALLOWED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF PRIVATE JOURNALS AS ONE OF THE RIGHTS OF THE NOBILITY

Domestic humanitarian thought could not pass by so striking phenomenon of russian culture as a ‘fat’ (or «encyclopedic») magazine, and has developed several approaches to its study: journalistic, cultural and literary. In the focus of the ‘fat’ journal from the perspective of the history of russian journalism the correlation of the ideological direction of the magazine with the social struggle of its time, analysis of the specific reflection of periodical major events of the epoch.

In the focus of culturological approach the journal involves the study of such important issues as the «magazine and self-consciousness of the nation.» So, v.Y. Lakshin directly contrasts the russian newspaper, which usually were «the mouthpiece of the government,» and the magazines that say «unofficial voice of society, in artistic and journalistic forms of a large amount of informal information». Moreover, the literary historian and a close associate of tvardovsky on «new world», knowing the particular impact of «fat» of the journal on the reading russia, makes a fruitful scientific hypothesis: «we can even say that such a unique social and moral education, as the russian intelligentsia with all its advantages and all disadvantages, there is a direct fruit of russian literature and journalism, especially the «fat» journals». Analysis of correlation of magazine periodicals with the literary process is a key aspect of literary approach. Named approaches of study russian periodicals have a single research subject - «a magazine and ...» «Magazine, and socio-era social content», «magazine and the spiritual content of the era,» «journal of literature and the formation of a new direction». Meanwhile, the phenomen of russian «fat» magazine lies in its unique artistic self-sufficiency, the formal content integrity.

Y.N. Tynyanov, comparing the literary magazine of the 1820s with the literary magazine of the 1920s, wrote: «The Russian magazine has experienced since many phases of development - up to complete necrosis of the magazine (here and below in the quote the author’s italics. - T. S., and AP) as an independent literary phenomenon. Now «magazine», «almanac,» «collection» - all the same: they differ only in the directions and rates. (And by the material). But it’s not all - construction itself because the magazine has its value, because all the coffee material may be good, but the magazine itself is bad. but what makes the magazine fit - is its literary usefulness to, the interest of the reader’s journal, as literary works (Emphasis added. - TS, and AP) of some kind. If there is no such interest, smarter, poet and prose writer to produce their own collections ...»

FYODOR

DOSTOEVSKY (November 11, 1821 - February 9, 1881) Russian novelist and short-story writer. Dostoyevsky is usually regarded as one of the finest novelists who ever lived. Literary modernism, existentialism, and various schools of psychology, theology, and literary criticism have been profoundly shaped by his ideas. His works are often called prophetic because he so accurately predicted how Russia’s revolutionaries would behave if they came to power. In his time he was also renowned for his activity as a journalist. Upon his return to Russia in 1861, Dostoyevsky plunged into literary activity. With his brother Mikhail, he edited influential journal Vremya (1861–63; “Time”), which was closed by the government on account of an objectionable article.
