Salvation Army Family Store The demand for goods from the Salvation Army Family Store has seen it outgrow its Whangaparaoa Rd store and move to bigger and brighter premises at 26 Karepiro Drive (next to Mitre 10). Store manager Cheryl Dymock says creating a fresh, easy to access and friendly experience for shoppers is one of her top priorities. Her management, organisational and communication skills, honed over many years spent working with the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, ensure the store runs with military precision, as well as warmth, humour and a sharp eye for a bargain. “My team and I are very fussy about what we put on the shelves,” Cheryl says. “This is a store for quality second hand goods.” All electrical goods, including televisions, coffee machines and whiteware that are sold in the store are professionally tested to ensure they are in good working order. Cheryl is assisted by a band of volunteers and community workers. Among their tasks is collecting saleable items in a truck, organising books into alphabetical order or subject categories so they are easy for shoppers to find and arranging clothing into womens’ and menswear racks. Wooden items are waxed and polished and behind the scenes, items that come in are sorted and thoroughly cleaned. Goods in the store are rotated weekly, and those that are not suitable for sale are passed on – an example is clothing that is bundled up and sent to the Salvation Army’s mission in Madagascar.

“As a community store, the perception is that we are always asking for stock – and of course we would not exist without those generous donations. However, giving back is also a vital part of what we do.” All proceeds from the store are used to fund the work that the Salvation Army does in the community, which includes working with children and helping people with various forms of addiction. The store is also part of the local Salvation Army’s outreach programme, which is being extended to include an initiative with WINZ whereby people coming into or returning to the workforce can obtain clothes from the store to wear to job interviews. A selection of baby clothes from the store is regularly sent to Women’s Refuge, and families in need are given assistance. “Recently a family came to us when their lounge had been totally destroyed by fire and we were able to provide a lounge suite, television and other goods to set them up again.”
This month, Eddie Law, one of the longest serving businessmen on the Coast, is celebrating 37 years in business. Eddie left school to start work at The Parker Electrical Co Ltd. In 1974 he took over that store and renamed it Eddie Law. The store has changed locations several times before settling in its existing spot in the Whangaparaoa Plaza.
