NEW ITALIAN SHIPMENTS Featuring Wines from

Alto Adige - Veneto - Piedmont - Tuscany Campania - Sicily Italy has been a country of extensive HH&C exploration in 2014. With their taste buds alert, our buying team headed to Italy this April; they had the enviable task of tasting wines from across the peninsula and into Sicily. It is with great excitement that we announce the arrival of the fruits of their trip. You will see familiar names in the following pages, as we continue to enthuse about the wines from Stefano Massone in Piedmont, Il Colle in Montalcino, Lunatico in Veneto and Cantina del Taburno in Campania. There are new wines and estates here too – we encourage you to discover the beautiful Barbera and Dolcetto from Francesco Boschis, and Bussia Soprana’s outstanding Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo. Whatis-more, there are grape varieties here that we suspect few of you will have encountered: now is the time to get to know our 2013 Schiava from Alto Adige and Frappato from Sicily (pages 2 and 12). Characterful wines that offer good value and seasonal appeal have been key to the compilation of this range. From vivacious whites for salads and seafood, to vibrant reds for long lunches, these Italian gems will be perfect to pour abundantly over the months ahead!

Viticoltori Alto Adige Also known as the Südtirol, the Alto Adige is Italy’s northernmost province. With Austria and Switzerland to its north, picturesque, vine-covered hillsides contrast starkly with the backdrop of snow-covered mountain peaks. The average vineyard holding here is the smallest in Italy, which has given rise to numerous co-operatives – quality-oriented, Viticoltori Alto Adige is one such enterprise. Tasting with them in April, we discovered that the wines of this region are as compelling as the scenery is breath-taking.

Pinot Grigio San Pietro 2013

12x75cl

£119.00

12x75cl

£146.40

12x75cl

£114.00

This is the third vintage that we have shipped the San Pietro Pinot Grigio – we consistently love this wine for its lively, fresh style and purity of flavours. In 2013 it is bright lemon-gold colour with delicate, green melon and lime aromas. The palate is zippy and crisp, with a silky texture and a clean finish.

Gewurztraminer San Pietro 2013 Here is a beautifully perfumed wine that will be delicious to drink as an aperitif or with a plate of cheeses and sweet pickles. It combines lifted, rose-petal and lychee flavours with a satisfying, vivacious mid-palate. The finish is racy and dry.

Schiava San Pietro 2013

“This is not a wine to taste – this is a wine to drink,” we were told when this Schiava was poured into our glasses. The perfect accompaniment to charcuterie, this ancient, Etruscan grape classically gives paler coloured, crisp, cherry-flavoured reds. This wine is so thirst-quenching, you will not need water on the table!

Francesca Rizzi, Veneto Respect for the land is core to how Francesca Rizzi and Rodolfo Tonnello run their small farm, high in the hills of the Veneto. Certified organic, the family farm includes prime vineyard sites in the Valdobbiadene region, where the white Glera variety (the Prosecco grape) excels. Focusing their winemaking attention entirely on Prosecco, they make two wines under the Lunatico label a semi-sparkling Frizzante and a fully-sparkling Spumante. We were delighted to be pioneers in shipping these wines directly to the UK in 2008, and continue to love their natural, pure style.

Lunatico Prosecco Frizzante 2013

12x75cl

£148.90

This lightly sparkling Prosecco cannot be beaten for its summery, delicately fragrant appeal. Aromas of the 2013 are floral and fresh, recalling green apples and elderflower. This is a gently frothy, mouth-filling, palate-cleansing wine – don’t forget to put a second bottle on ice, as the first will slip down all too quickly.

Lunatico Prosecco Spumante 2013

12x75cl

£199.50

This is a Prosecco that will turn heads this summer, thanks to its finesse, intensity and elegance. With vivacious, persistent bubbles, this is racy and fine, bursting with lemon-lime flavours. The texture is creamy, the finish bright and uplifting. We recommend pouring this liberally at parties and lunches; or why not try it with it with pecorino cheese (a partnership made in heaven).

Francesco Boschis, Piedmont The history of this Azienda began in 1919 when Telesforo Boschis moved from the vineyards of Barolo to the nearby hill of Pianezzo, in Dogliani. Here began his love affair with the Dolcetto grape, which thrives in the commune’s fresher temperatures. We met Telesforo’s great-great grandson, Marco, who makes a delicious range of reds from Piedmont’s indigenous varietals: Dolcetto, Barbera, Freisa and Grignolino. Here are the two wines that stood out to us most:

Dogliani Pianezzo 2012

12x75cl

£133.80

12x75cl

£133.80

100% Dolcetto from the commune of Dogliani (where “Dolcetto is King”), this unoaked red comes from four different plots of vines, located high on the hill of Pianezzo. This wine is enchanting. The colour is a gorgeous ruby-purple; on the nose, aromas of red and black cherries leap from the glass. This is a mouth-filling, fresh, elegant wine, the finish being lithe and satisfying.

Langhe Barbera 2012 The Barbera grape needs drier, warmer conditions, hence this wine comes from south-east facing vines on free-draining, limestone soils. Aged for 4 months in large, old oak botti, this is crisper and more structured than the Dogliani (above). With a crunchy core of red berry flavours, this will be best served with a meal – perhaps chargrilled veal or a hearty lasagne.

Bussia Soprana, Piedmont Bussia Soprana’s 22 hectares of organically-cultivated vineyards extend across the commune of Monforte d’Alba. This is Barolo country, and it is the great Nebbiolo grape that is the focus of the estate’s attention. With his proper handshake and big smile, we were utterly won over by owner Silvano Casiraghi and his outstanding wines.

Langhe Nebbiolo 2010

12x75cl

£246.00

6x75cl

£266.50

100% Nebbiolo from vineyards located on the hill of Bussia, this declassified Barolo comes from plots of more recently planted vines, averaging 8 years in age. From the stunning 2010 vintage, this wine has the prettiest of aromas: dried roses, red cherries and sweet spice. On the palate, it is full, fresh, and finely textured, with good concentration of savourysweet flavours, and a long-lingering finish. For a Baby Barolo that is full of finesse and approachable to drink now, this is the perfect choice.

Barolo Vigna Colonnello 2009 Just 0.5 hectares in size, the south-west facing Colonnello vineyard takes its name from a former owner (a military man!). The vines here average 60 years in age, this being one of the estate’s prime Barolo sites. Ruby-garnet in colour, aromas are intensely perfumed. This is a full bodied, refined, powerfully structured wine with tightly-packed, floral, red fruit flavours. The finish is spicy and liquorice-scented. Despite this wine’s youth, it is already open and delicious, and will sing with a rib-eye steak (for drinking 2014-2020).

Stefano Massone, Piedmont In a region almost exclusively devoted to red wine, Gavi is Piedmont’s white wine exception. Stefano Massone has a small estate, 10 hectares of which are dedicated to the Cortese grape. We were delighted to introduce his Vigneto Masera cru to our list with the 2007 vintage, and have shipped every vintage since.

Gavi Vigneto Masera 2013

12x75cl

£135.80

The Masera vineyard stands on a plateau 250 metres above sea level, the soil being calcareous and poor: ideal for Cortese. This 2013 is - once again - superb. Fresh, dry and aromatic, flavours are delicately floral, showing notes of green melon and lime. This is a light-bodied, linear wine – perfect to drink with crab linguine, we suggest.

Campriano, Chianti Colli Senesi Located 17km south of Siena, the beautiful Campriano estate comprises 350 hectares of oak forest, arable land, olive groves, and – most importantly - 15 hectares of vines. The farm buildings date back to the 15th century: this has always been Ranuccio Neri’s family home and he began working on the farm in 1993. His primary goal at the time was to rebuild the vineyards, modernise the cellar and launch estate-bottled wines onto the market. This he has achieved with great success. Having shipped his Chianti Colli Senesi for the first time with the 2008 vintage, the 2012 has now arrived. We are also delighted to introduce his 2008 Riserva: with its additional ageing in cask and bottle, this should not to be missed.

Chianti Colli Senesi 2012

12x75cl

£122.00

12x75cl

£165.00

Sangiovese is the dominant grape variety here, with indigenous varieties Canaiolo Nero and Ciliegiolo completing the blend. Vibrant ruby colour, aromas are open and attractive, recalling red cherries and fresh figs. The palate is vivacious and buoyant, with good mid-palate richness and a lively finish.

Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva 2008 In contrast with the wine above which spent no time in oak, Ranuccio’s Riserva was matured for 12 months in 1500 litre French and Slavonian casks. This additional maturation has resulted in a wine with beautifully perfumed aromas, combining savoury, meaty character with lifted notes of fresh tea and sweet red berries. The palate is supple, rounded and spicy, the finish being long and uplifting.

Il Colle, Montalcino Last year, we were delighted to introduce the wines of Caterina Carli`s Il Colle estate. Caterina`s respect for nature is unwavering. She aims to be as noninterventionist as possible, preferring to gently guide the winegrowing process. As part of this she uses only indigenous yeasts and neither fines nor filters her wines. Her light touch shines through in the clarity, vibrancy and finesse of her two wines.

Rosso di Montalcino 2012

12x75cl

£181.75

12x75cl

£315.00

This 2012 Rosso is a pure, fruity expression of Sangiovese, being approachable and pleasurable when young. On the nose, it is utterly captivating, bursting with freshly-picked red cherry aromas. The palate is finely textured and full of flavour, the finish being complete and refreshing.

Brunello di Montalcino 2008 100% Sangiovese, this 2008 Brunello spent 4 years in large, old oak botti (in contrast with the 18 months the Rosso spent in oak). Mid rubygarnet colour, aromas are complex, combining spiciness, red fruit and grilled meatiness. On the palate, this is full, with a fresh attack, savouryspiced flavours and a rich, supple texture. With a fine-grained grip to finish, this cries out for food – we recommend serving it with a succulent roast leg of lamb or risotto with truffles (for drinking 2014-2017+).

Cantina del Taburno, Campania Cantina del Taburno is located in Campania, an hour north-east of Naples. It is owned by the Agricultural Consortium of Benevento, which was established in 1901 and had an important role in the development of agriculture in the Sannio area. 300 viticulturists are associated with the Consortium today, contributing grapes that are vinified at the modernised winery. With its drive for quality and passion for indigenous grape varieties, the Cantina is a point of reference for viticulture in the region. Tasting across their range in April, their 2013 Falanghina stood out as a southern Italian star.

Falanghina del Sannio 2013

12x75cl

ÂŁ135.25

Here is the perfect white to serve with a salad of ripe tomatoes and mozzarella. Pale lemon-gold colour, aromas are open and aromatic, with notes of comice pears. On the palate, this is medium bodied, with pure fruit flavours and a mouth-cleansing texture. The finish is graceful and fresh.

Centonze, Sicily Our first ever shipment from Sicily! Based in Marsala, the Centonze family cultivates 20 hectares of Grillo, Zibibbo, Frappato and Nero d'Avola grapes. It was their red wines that we were most surprised by, for these are not jammy, alcoholic, tiring wines, but rather freshness and vitality are central to their style. Light-of-step and medium bodied, these characterful wines are a welcome addition to the HH&C list. Both of these wines will be arriving in early July – please contact us to make a reservation in advance of their arrival.

Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane 2013

12x75cl

£119.70

This fleshy, black cherry and violet-scented wine is one of our best value discoveries from our Italian trip. With its lively personality and refreshing finish, this Sicilian charmer is delicious with or without food.

Frappato Terre Siciliane 2013

12x75cl

£143.75

Like the Schiava on page 2, the Frappato grape gives wines that are naturally paler in colour - but do not be deceived into thinking that this wine is light in flavour! Organically made, aromas recall freshly picked red and black cherries – very pure and crunchy. This is a generous, attractive, vivacious wine, with a long-flavoured finish. Try this with arancini or grilled tuna for a true taste of Sicily.
