Dear Caribbean RUNWAY readers, We are very excited to share our second issue with you. It is packed with functional fashion and makeup advice for the vacation season. We have beefed up our food section by adding daring new recipes, included an easy guide to decorating your home with interior décor expert, Toni Crockett and we explore the latest news in the TV and Film industry. Have you ever heard the term “resort wear” and thought it was for the travellers; the jet setters who wine and dine in exclusive vacation destinations wearing these ensembles in upscale tropical resorts? Well, that is no longer the perception of “resort wear”. Because of its light, breezy nature and easy fit, Caribbean people can wear resort wear anytime of the day and night. Designers are opting to make resort wear versatile and not just for lounging by the pool. If you don’t believe me, read our “Resort Wear Fashion Feature” p. 19 to 27. You will certainly have a resort wear piece in your closet in no time. Makeup has always been a fascination of mine because of its power to transform. There is a noticeable boost of confidence when a woman has had a makeover. I am always awed to see the before and after pics; the big reveal. No one has more experience in this process than my friend and make up mentor, noted Make Up Artist, Arlene Villarule. Read about how she has transformed makeup into a viable business in “Making and Changing Faces: The Beauty of Arlene Villarule”. p. 37 to 40. The “summer” time is here, the beach runs; vacation and mango season! Chef Jason Peru, in the article “Kitchen Flair” p. 52 to 55 shows us how to transform mangoes into dishes. Although we love our mango “chows”, there are many more things you can do with it. Be sure to try his recipes, they taste great and are very simple to execute. Enjoy!

Spring/Summer 2015 runways have been showing us tonnes of mid-century looks, from pleated tea-length skirts to full coverage, high-waisted bikini bottoms. The trick is in the fit. DIY FASHION Use Your Sarong For More Than Just A Cover-up! by Daniela Nandlal

Ladies it’s the season for gorgeous swimsuits, sun block, sunglasses and great company! If you’re excited as we are then we know you will be heading to the beaches to soak up some sun, and salty goodness. It’s exactly why we’ve created this DIY guide to help you add some flair into your already fabulous beachwear, using only a sarong. How exciting is that?

Oblong

Square

This shape has an Interjacent line. They are longer than they are wide with the forehead and jaw width about equal. If this is you, try slightly oversized cat-eye frames that add width at your temples and distract from a long chin.

Angular in line, this face shape is characteristic of a balanced width and length proportion. The forehead and jaw ``dimension. If this is you, try angular Wayfarers that match the size of your face.

If you don’t already own a sarong, (sometimes called a pareo, urong, kanga, or lungi) you may want to invest in one since there are many benefits to it. Not only are they beautiful and an essential beach accessory but it can also be worn in various ways. Chances are whatever your signature beach look is; it can be created using a sarong. However it takes a bit of the three P’s: Practice, Patience and Perseverance to perfecting the ‘art of tying a sarong.’ Here are some stylish examples with SIMPLE guidelines for making the best out of your sarong.

Toga Style

Strapless Dress

Sarong Dress

Sarong Shorts

1. Wrap the sarong around the back and place both ends in the center of the chest.

1. Wrap the sarong around the back and bring both ends in the middle of the chest.

1. Wrap the sarong around the back and place both ends in the center of the chest.

1. Wrap the sarong around your waist and tie a knot in the back.

2. Next, wrap one corner all the way around your body and place it underneath the opposite arm. Pull the corner over the back of the shoulder.

2. Gather the two edges in front of your chest and tie the edges together in a double knot against the bust, allowing the extra fabric to cascade down. Creating a lovely, flowing strapless dress.

2. Twist the edges and place over the head. Tie it around the neck to secure it.

3. Holding that corner with one hand, pull the other corner in front of your shoulder and tie the two corners into a knot. 16 AUGUST 2014

However if you would like to show a bit more skin by wearing a pair of shorts, you can turn your sarong into that as well. Don’t believe us? Follow the arrow.

2. Gather the bottom ends of the skirt and pass between your legs 3. Tie the ends in the front. That’s all to it! It may take some experimenting before you find your preferred style using your sarong but that’s okay. Just remember to have fun while doing it!

Flattering Frames: Choosing The Perfect Sunglasses

Heart

Round

This is a curvilinear shape with the forehead being the widest part, tapering to a soft round chin. If this is you, try wearing classic aviators that complement wide cheekbones and a narrow chin.

Typically the width of the face is 2/3 of the length of the face, with the cheeks being the widest part. Accentuate the natural curvilinear line of the face while balancing the width of your cheeks with sunglasses that are rounded but widest at the brow.

by Stephanie Ramlogan

F

ace shape is determined by line. They can be angular (straight lines), curvilinear (rounded lines) or Interjacent (having both curved and angular lines).

When looking at faces we also examine the width proportion of the forehead, cheek and jawline. Combining these features creates a formula that helps stylists determine the accessories and hairstyles that best complement the individual. The idea is to match the natural line of the face with similar lines in the accessory, and to balance the overall width of the face by evening out proportions.

Resort wear or “cruise wear” has always been synonymous with the Caribbean region. Although the style was originally marketed to affluent customers who live the life of a “yachtie” or vacation in regions with warm climates, it is now becoming a signature clothing style; marketed by many designers and clothing stores throughout the globe. Trinidad and Tobago’s own Anya Ayoung-Chee took home the title prize in Project Runway Season 9 with a resort wear collection while veteran designers like Meiling and Claudia Pegus have stunned the region for years with their unique and colourful resort collections. We will now look at three upcoming Trinbagonian designers who are making a name for themselves on the local scene with resort wear.

Designer: Adrian Foster

Adrian is no doubt an emerging force in the design world and will soon soar to great heights and we will be there every step of the way. We ended the interview with a fun Q&A segment and this is what he had to say:

Photography by Marlon James

CR: What is your definition of style?

Personal style! We all have that one fashion era, that type of texture, that colour, that one great fashion designer that we love dearly! Style is driven by what you love and what you know works for you!

Shirt Dress: Adrian Foster Designs | Jewellery: Artisan Jewellery by RED FIRE INNOVATIONS LIMITED | Belt: Stylist

making it into wearable art is where I see the juxtaposition.” His easy to wear collection of wrap skirts, cotton trousers and shirt dresses ranges from 65USD – 120USD and can be ordered online from his Facebook Page: AdrianfosterAF

CR: Name someone in the public eye who epitomizes style to you.

Adrian Foster

Stephanie Ramlogan! A fashion blogger and stylist in Trinidad. She understands fashion and its evolution and that’s what I believe is important. She knows her body; what works and what doesn’t.

Adrian Foster is a 24

year old fashion designer who is enthusiastic and passionate about the world of glamour and design. He views fashion as a means of communicating with the world around him and acquires great pleasure from seeing his finished products worn by people.

CR: What is your favourite fashion house and designer?

Balmain! Olivier Rousteing is the current Creative Director for the brand and I just love how he’s young and edgy. His fashion style brings the brand to life.

CR: Your favourite food and film?

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fashion Design from the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), but almost turned down the field due to the high cost of tuition abroad (where he initially hoped to study). The Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design (CAFD) was able to give him an opportunity to follow his dreams locally. Upon entering the programme at UTT/CAFD Adrian was bombarded with the challenge of learning fast.

Food is easy for me, because I love to eat! East Indian dishes! Curry and Roti , the sweets, etc. I also love Italian menus and I try to make them myself from cookbooks. Film – I love emotional shows with good history behind it. Lol, I know! I’m a crier! LOL The Help, UP-the animated film, Life of Pi, Julie and Julia and I Am Sam.

“I only had the ability to sketch/illustrate. Apparel construction is where I struggled the most as a designer; understanding how to construct garments will enable a better understanding of how to create wearable designs. So using the machinery and working with fabrics was a challenge for me, but I overcame it.” His determination paid off and he was able to complete the programme and develop his unique signature as a designer, which includes minimalist style and silhouettes that are easy to wear, functional and versatile.

CR: Personal motto and last words.

“Work hard today to build a legacy for tomorrow” My last words are – Passion is everything! If you love what you do, making the sacrifice is sometimes easy. Set your goals, but do not stop once they are achieved. Never limit yourself. When you love what you do, others would too. “I am deeply inspired by my rich culture and art. I love marrying the two – fashion and art, which for me, has no separation. The ability to create garments that are intensely artistically influenced by the story of the concepts, and

The items can be found on our website www.jangelique.com and prices range from 50USD-250USD”. Janelle is also skilled at a wide variety of designs and apparel; something she has worked hard towards accomplishing and is very proud of. “My team and I take pride in creating readyto-wear apparel for divas. We provide a wide range of wardrobe options, including formal wear, casual wear and swimwear.” Janelle is ready to take the fashion world by storm and Caribbean Runway will be there all the way to monitor her progress and excellence. We had a few questions for the talented designer about her life and work in our Q&A segment, and here’s what she had to say:

CR: What inspires you?

My self-motivation has always been intrinsic, so it is always hard to pinpoint exactly what inspires me. I am always determined to be the best at whatever I do. Growing up, my parents always provided the absolute best and paid special attention to quality, now I am motivated to be self-sufficient without sacrificing those qualities instilled in me.

Janelle Angelique Forde

CR: Who is your favourite designer?

My dear friend from the Philippines, Lord Maturan, currently tops my list. He is an exceptional designer who specializes in bridal wear.

Like Adrian, many other other local designers are producing quality collections.

and owner of J. Angelique Clothing. She started designing during her years at the University of the West Indies; participating in fashion shows held there, as well as several other local shows. After graduating in 2012, she decided to pursue a full time career in the field of fashion design. She also undertook a number of design courses at London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins in London.

CR: Which model would you like to have wear your clothes? (Could be a local, regional, international, alive or deceased)

I have a thing for beauty queens, especially those who have excelled in their professional endeavours, so I’m always ecstatic to have Greer Iton (Medical Doctor) and recently, Leah Marville (Attorney-at-Law) in J. Angelique. Since I’ve already had Giselle Laronde-West, I would choose Wendy Fitzwilliam.

CR: Which accessory is a must to complete an outfit?

It’s between the statement neckpiece and the belt. It’s hard to choose just one. For more info on J. Angelique Clothing visit www.facebook.com/j.angeliqueclothing

Her most recent endeavour is Jin Forde Regatta; a line tailored to the glamourous life of a yachtie. The collection, which was inspired by the shape, size and characteristics of yachts features an array of pieces, including sensual bikinis, sexy whole pieces, glamourous

She most recently received the honour of being asked to design the gowns for the Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe Competition. “I create clothing that exhibit class, brilliance, beauty, elegance, sophistication, poise and sensuality. hat is it about a Pop Up Shop that makes the shopaholic in your stir? More than likely it’s the lure of a limited time offer, or a one of a kind garment that is probably only ever going to be available in that fabric in your size for just a few hours. Over the last few months, we’ve seen more and more Pop Up Shops happening around the country, but none so popular as those taking place at Meiling’s boutique in Woodbrook,Trinidad.

As the Team M crew gets more organised and start looking to make their flash sales a more regular happening, thrill seeker shoppers can look forward to more opportunities to experience the exhilaration of shopping on a time limit and fans of the brands can rest a little easier - there’ll be lots of this Pop Up action to go around.

Team M, the Meiling girls, the Ling girls - however you may know them, is a team of bright, young fashion designers, graphic designers and artists who’ve formed something of an unofficial collective within the halls of 6 Carlos.

Theirs is an informal arrangement – the membership is fluid, barring the core team of designers Zidelle, Sanian Lewis, Shannon Alonzo, Monique Rodriquez, and illustrator Shannon Kwong. An eclectic group with a variety of design capabilities and aesthetics, Team M is probably best known for their series of Pop Up Shops hosted at 6 Carlos over the last six months, an opportunity for fans new and old of each designer to shop, mingle and be exposed to the smorgasbord of clothing and accessories on offer from Team M and their mentor Meiling. The Pop Ups, for them, present an opportunity for growth and market research. It has also been an essential development tool for their individual brands; Zidelle, who works predominantly with leather, explains, ‘It’s given me a forum to experiment with different media; I get to try different things and see which products are more marketable. And you get to meet new markets that you’re not usually exposed to. Like I’ll get to meet another designer’s crowd that may not know my brand.’ It seems that rings true for most of the Team M members as accessory designer, Lewis interjects with her own outlook, ‘For me, it’s all those things as well. I like to learn from experience so going through the situations and allowing yourself to change based on what you’re experiencing is important. I’ve started to figure out my brand a little bit better through this.’ Each Pop Up Shop is themed, and the themes are becoming a more important and emphatic part of their strategy. The Easter Pop Hop Shop was probably the most strongly branded and marketed installment,

Makeup Kit Essentials by Pro Makeup Artist Sarah Benjamin Paul

Ladies, apart from your makeup routine of moisturizer, face primer, foundation and powder; concealer is a MUST. It hides all imperfections on the skin that cannot be covered by a foundation and gives life to tired eyes. To appear more youthful instantaneously, apply concealer to the skin right after you have applied your foundation and set it with a finishing powder. Concealers come in different types which mean it’s tricky to find the right match for your skin. There is the liquid concealer and cream based concealer with each having their strengths and weaknesses.

Coverage

Liquid concealers should be used for light to medium coverage whereas cream concealers ranges from medium to full. Even though the liquid concealer does not cover as much, it blends evenly into the skin without caking and works well with wrinkled skin reducing the appearance of fine lines. Cream concealers hide almost all imperfections but need to be blended well to avoid caking and can cause breakouts from clogging the pores.

1

Colour Choices

After you have decided which consistency is best suited for your skin you would have to choose the right colour based concealer. Colour Corrector Concealers are used for intense colour discolorations on the skin. Lavender, counteracts yellowness in the skin; Yellow, is great for purple tones like dark circles or acne scarring ; Green, neutralizes redness which includes diffusing redness from rosacea; Pink, neutralizes the blue tones on lighter/pale skin while Orange /Salmon, neutralizes blue/deep purple/gray tones on deeper skin tones.

Some of the best concealers are: 1. Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit 2. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer 3. MAC Pro Long Wear Concealer 4. Urban Decay 24/7 concealer pencil 5. Illamasqua Skin Base Lift

Makeup For The Many Shades Of Women: black | Up Paris by Mercedes Dianna Boodoo

French Makeup Consultant and black | Up Beauty Ambassador; Clothilde Lambadarios

T

his unique makeup was founded in Paris in 1999, specifically formulated for black and mixed beauties. The upscale beauty brand offers professional quality cosmetics to women with darker hues. In the past, traditional beauty brands have excluded women of colour from their product lines by catering exclusively to lighter complexions. Black | Up is revolutionising the industry by bridging the gap for women of colour. Similar to the darker skinned women in Europe, Caribbean women face a multitude of problems when using traditional beauty brands; the foundations and powders can appear “casper-ish” due to an improper match of the skin tone, the eye shadows and blushes are not noticeable when applied and a distinct problem faced by women in tropical climates, is the inability of makeup to withstand the heat. Black | Up seeks to address all of these concerns. Through precise research and product testing, they have formulated a brand that allows women the choice of foundations, powders and concealers with warmer hues. The lipsticks, cheek colours and eye shadows have stronger pigments which undoubtedly show up better on darker skin.

34 AUGUST 2014

“The Caribbean’s ethnic diversity have produced women with the same need for beauty brands of warmer tones”, a point noted by Clothilde Lambadarios, French Makeup Consultant and black | Up Beauty Ambassador at the black | Up workshop held on 21st May at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad. On her visit to demonstrate the power of the black | Up brand, she recognised that there are many more variations of skin tones than she expected all of which can find comfort by using this product. To test her theory, I became an experimental subject at the black | Up counter in Stechers Limited, Long Circular Mall. After using a beauty combination of the 8hr Correcting Primer, Full Coverage Foundation, Loose Powder, Concealer, Mascara, Eye shadow, Blush, Lipstick and Lip Lacquer; I must admit the transformation was met with great enthusiasm. The 8hr Correcting Primer is light and silky and does just what it says, it lasts for hours and keeps your makeup intact. The Full Coverage Foundation had a weightless texture. It was shocking as to how light it felt on the skin but gives a medium to high coverage. The Eye shadow, Blush, Lipstick and Lip Lacquer were all highly Caribbean-Runway.com

If you are looking for makeup that gives a powdery, velvet finish with a line specifically designed for warmer complexions then black | Up Paris should be the new addition to your makeup kit. I highly recommend trying the lipstick for a long lasting finish and the lip lacquer for a silky lip-gloss that adds intense colour and shine without the sticky factor. With a “cult following in the USA, South Africa and Europe, black | Up is the new kid on the block in the Caribbean set to take over. KITCHEN FLAIR With Chef Jason Peru

S

o here I am in the esteemed seat as feature culinary writer for the Caribbean Runway Magazine. Normally, I’m entrenched amidst the granite embedded stove tops of Fanatic Kitchen Studio or on set shooting my Culinary Cooking Show “Bmobile Bubble With Us”. Nevertheless, to share some of my gastronomic and tantalizing thoughts in a different forum such as printed media is always fulfilling for me and experiential for readers who share the same passion for food as I do. I always believed that food possessed a synonymous talent for converging with many facets of culture in Trinidad & Tobago. As an eclectic nation built on the foundation of harmonious ethnicities, we have and if I dare say so; simply one of the richest and most diverse food cultures in the world. Due to our rich heritage and cultural history, we are able to fuse the foods of our ancestral past and modernize it with new world trends whist still engaging in showcasing our local ingredients and unique flavor. Yes we are Trinbagonians! I’m elated to say this. When one travels, explores and becomes a global citizen, a sense of appreciation for what you have back home tailors your mind set and way of thinking. Renowned chef Jamie Oliver once said, “the way through a country and its culture is seen via the food of its markets”. How true is this statement? As we trek through these bustling souks that feed our nation, we see all the crops that define our people and its dishes. How beautiful is this? We have beautiful lush lands that produce wholesome and fruitful ingredients that help nourish our people, as well as bountiful seas, prolific farms and admirable food laborers who

toil everyday to strengthen our society. As a chef, I tip my hat to everyone who partakes in this process as I end up reaping the rewards of fabricating these victuals into delicious, healthy and attractive culinary delights.

Now as culinary innovators and pioneers, chefs must then be forward thinking. Why Not? Well I see the fashionistas thinking out the box, musicians are constantly transforming our music, and even our sportsmen are blazing new trails for us. Chefs have quickly assumed the role of developing new food concepts and amalgamating flavours with new ones ranging from different genres. Imagination and creativity is what makes us who we are and we take this challenge to heart when we showcase our indebt oral bounded creations. With the advent of the Food Network channel and the wide respect and involvement food has made onto our culture, we recognize it as the future of health and living sound life styles. What I do as a chef is not a “wuk” as local parlance will dictate, but rather a career that brings about sincere passion and happiness to all. As citizens of this beautiful nation, I beseech onto you; when next you go to the supermarket, or local vendor or vicinal food market, try to back-track the process of where your food came from. Look at the people who sell it and get in touch with their story and journey from “soil to boil.” Be mindful of what it takes to nourish a nation and the people who cook these meals in various locations across the country such as school feeding, restaurants, small family establishments and even in your own home. As I depart from my very emotional editorial, I wanted to share with you a favourite dish of mine utilizing mangoes. A tad bit fancy, but hey I’m a chef- I got to make it look sexy. To highlight the early reference to mangoes, I developed seared chicken and mango summer rolls with an agro-dolce sauce. Wrapped in hydrated rice skins, this is definitely a healthy alternative to frying and is stuffed with fresh vibrant vegetables. For dessert, try a mango panna cotta garnished with a fruit salsa and mint leaves. Hope you try it and enjoy.

Every year there is a mango festival held in Trinidad that showcases the hundreds of innovative ways in which this magnificent and versatile fruit is used; mango jams, jellies, chows, soaps and even writing paper. When in season, locals flock to neighbouring and road side trees to delve and enjoy these various species of mangoes we proudly produce here on this island. Mango and tropical fruits are indeed a challenge to grow and reap in some countries because of their climate and geographical location. We therefore have to make use of these marvelous ingredients we bore from the earth and concentrate on the sustainability of our local food. Being a “culinarian”, my travels lead me onto different adventures where I enjoy many local dishes and delicacies of that said country. I marvel to see how simplicity tends to make up the general concept of these dishes or treats as locals utilize what is in season and marry it well with whatever grows or grazes on it. Sounds a bit funny, but most dishes that we eat today all came out of necessity and using what was available to us. Rice, Dhal and Bhagi or Calaloo and Coo-Coo or even roasted bakes and other flour based breads were paired very well with cheap vegetables or even fish by-products. It is important to note these things as it defines and forms the premise of our ancestral food.

decorating so that they could make a career out of it one day.

Cake Artist Extraordinaire Michelle Sohan Produces Edible Art by Mercedes Dianna Boodoo Martha Stewart at Food Network’s Wine and Food Festival 2013

T

he strikingly beautiful and age defying Michelle Sohan has not only drunk from the elixir of life but has found a way to turn the girlish fancy of cake decorating into an art form; into a sustainable business. At the age of forty she confessed her dream to work in food production quickly faded due to a devastating neck and back injury she suffered in her twenties. That being the time of her life when all things seemed possible. The eager young professional leaving University hoped to make a great difference in the world of work while pursuing her Master’s degree in Food Technology.

The self-taught baker and cake decorator has taken on the challenge of creating specialty cakes; a niche market that beckoned in 2010. Since the advent of popular American TV shows, “Cake Boss” and “Ace of Cakes” the need for cakes with design, sculpture and artistic flair became the new fad in Trinidad and Tobago. Michelle wasted no time in meeting these demands. Her business skills and innate curiosity took over as she started to play with cake design. Disassembling trinkets and things to see how they fit together added to her training on how to make her cakes structurally sound. The continuous learning and development gave her the platform to take her career a step further into the international realm. From competing and winning at the National Capital Area Cake Show (2014) with Zane Beg of Norm and Zane, The Sweet Life LLC in Virginia USA to being published with Cake Central Magazine (one of the largest cake magazines in USA), Michelle is quickly becoming the first internationally recognised specialty cake artist out of Trinidad and Tobago.

Michelle Sohan and Zane Beg's winning cake at the National Capital Area Cake Show (2014) in Virginia, USA

In an uncomplicated story, living a life that had little or no hardships came the most challenging experience yet. Michelle’s injuries left her without the job she loved and sans hope. What will become of her career and how will she make money are some of the things that scampered through her mind. When all seemed lost, she decided to bake cakes for a charity event, never having to do anything in the kitchen before she just tried her hand at it. In the blink of an eye her new passion emerged. She smiled as she professed, “I had no idea of what I was doing, my sisters were the bakers in the family definitely not me, but people loved it. I started to bake cakes at home and sell to the faculty at the University of the West Indies. My mother gave me her stove with a tiny oven and that’s how it all began.” When she had enough resources to acquire a shop front in the conservative area of Lange Park, Chaguanas again she felt the gust of reality. “I thought I would open a cupcake shop but no one was ready for that so taking the advice of family and friends I turned it into a bakery. There was a need for a bakery in this area as it was not done before.” Needless to say, Michelle’s bakery named, “Bakery Treatz” took off and has been her backbone for the last ten years.

Her philosophy is simple, “treat customers as you would treat your family.” This business motto coupled with her passion and love for cakes, not to mention her seven day work week has made Michelle the best at what she does and has made her bakery a household name. What started as an accidental discovery had led to her fulfilling her highest potential. The cake artist who remains humble throughout all of her success, determined throughout her years of adversity and passion driven throughout her entire career has set new standards in the local cake industry and has revolutionised the way cake art is viewed.

DECOR

DIY Home Décor Project

Inexpensive Ways To Bring An Outdoor Feel Into Your Home Whether you have a small balcony, an expansive patio or modest porch, an outdoor living space has a desirable feeling about it. It evokes feelings of relaxation and calmness derived from the purity of nature. A well-designed space can even feel like a mini getaway after a long day at work.

Add Caribbean Inspired Looks To Your Home Without It Being Too Much

T

here is no need to over-do the paint colours on your wall to get that Caribbean feel. While we appreciate colour, we believe one must use it in moderation. Opt to add décor pieces to finish your look rather than a long term option such a painting your walls. It is easier, quicker and adds a touch of uniqueness.

W

hat if we took this same concept and brought the outdoors in? Creating a space that has an outdoor feel would seem almost natural in any Caribbean home.

Nothing says “Caribbean” like using local art and craft items to decorate your home. Make your room a luxurious tropical paradise by adding paintings and ornamental crafts to your space. Spruce up those white or neutral walls, tables and centre pieces. Invest in pieces that are hand made from local artists like the examples seen here. This gives a sense of national pride and much needed Caribbean influence in the right amounts.

When we think of outdoor living we think of bright and soothing colours, natural materials, lots of sunshine, lush green plants and organic shapes and textures. All of these elements can be infused into your home to create an everyday retreat for you and your family. Unlike porches and patios, an indoor room offers an escape from the heat and bugs, which I am sure, you will agree, is greatly appealing!

Use paintings to adorn your walls

An important factor to remember is that clutter is the antithesis of relaxation. Keep things light and simple. Do not over accessorise a coffee or console table. Balance and simplicity are key design principles that you want to achieve to make this look successful. The use of plants can set the tone for an inviting space as guests enter your home. It instantly adds colour, texture and can make all the difference in an otherwise simple space. Tropical greenery naturally brings the outdoors in, pun intended. To be even more creative there are many outdoor products that work

Use it as display pieces on wall stands Use Calabash pots as centre piece art

Textures and Natural Materials can be introduced in some of the simplest ways. Accent Pillows, accessories and even furniture come in several options that express this element perfectly. From seagrass placemats to hyacinth woven dining chairs textural elements such as these give a room depth, character and interest. Let there be light! This is a very important element. Let as much natural light as possible filter in. Select sheer and natural materials for long hemline drapery to achieve a delicate breezy and casual feel. Soothing colours inspired by the ocean, soft yellows and earthy greens are all ideal colour choices which never fail to disappoint. Take inspiration from your accessories. There are a variety of outdoor and ocean inspired accessories on the market today. From sea fan hurricane vases to star fish glass dishes available in fun and bright colour choices to add a whimsical touch to the home.

To re-create a more unique and creative look use glass lanterns to display beach finds like shells and driftwood. These make for stunning arrangements that exude an outdoor vibe. An added bonus is that they are versatile enough to be used in any room of the house should you decide you need a change. Of the five senses smell and sound are often overlooked in design. Scents are nostalgic for most of us. They may remind us of memories at the beach, a vacation or a favourite flower. Re-capture this element of the outdoors with scented candles. Moving away from the typical citronella candles you require outdoors, opt for a more elegant and natural scent that lingers throughout your room. Much like candles, water has a calming effect. The gentle trickling of water is indicative of another soothing element we experience outdoors; this can easily be transferred indoors with the addition of simple tabletop water features or more elaborate freestanding features. By fusing outdoor elements with indoor spaces, you can enjoy the serenity of nature without being exposed to the elements. With these tips you are one step closer to creating an outdoor retreat for you and your family to enjoy in the comfort of your home.

There is no better way to rejuvenate the mind than by reading novels. For your must have summer reading, we suggest these books below: Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn

“An irresistible summer thriller with a twisting plot worthy of Alfred Hitchcock…this delectable summer read will give you the creeps and keep you on edge until the last page.” – People Gone Girl has been critically acclaimed as Gillian Flynn’s breakthrough novel. And with each cliff-hanger chapter, it’s not hard to see why. The story follows Nick and Amy, a New York couple that relocates to Missouri after Nick is laid off from work. On the day of their fifth wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing and Nick becomes the prime suspect. But as the story unfolds it seems that Amy might not be the victim after all. Alternating between Nick’s present day account of Amy’s disappearance and Amy’s diary entries, the couple reveal tarnishing secrets about the other and how their outwardly perfect marriage is falling apart. And it’s the back and forth effect of this that makes the twists and turns of Gone Girl so engaging. The more Amy’s and Nick’s motives and morals are questioned, the more difficult it becomes to choose a side. The reader is unsure who’s telling the truth and there’s always the feeling that something terrible can happen at any given moment. But one thing is for sure…one of them is clearly a “psycho”, spinning a web of lies so expertly that everyone is fooled; detectives, lawyers, family, friends and the general public. When the truth is finally revealed, the “psycho” in question might not be who you think.

The Body Book - Cameron Diaz

The Body Book by Cameron Diaz is sure to be a staple as the world renowned actress opens up about her famous body and shares her formula for an allround healthier, stronger body that’s sure to last a lifetime, not just for bikini season. With The Body Book broken up into three parts: nutrition, fitness and the mind, Cameron delves into the importance of eating well; the best types of food that provide the most nutritional value and ways to go about replacing an unhealthy diet with a healthy one, the importance of exercise and how much more effective your body is when you strengthen it and the importance of positive thinking and it’s powerful connection to the body. Already #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List, The Body Book certainly is an insightful read as the advice is not just based on trends but actual scientific facts and told through Cameron’s personal experiences. It is not a fad diet book but a more organic, holistic book that can and will help you see your body and your mind as a truly amazing thing. Cameron comes across very genuine and the informal tone of the book makes you feel like she’s a friend giving great, fun, feel-good advice that soon becomes second nature. She encourages you to see how truly beautiful you are and you honestly feel like she just wants the best for you.

Claire of the Sea Light - Edwidge Danticat

Haitian born, bestselling novelist Edwidge Danticat weaves an enchanting story of Claire Lanme, a child born on the day of her mother’s death. Set in Haiti, Danticat paints a stunning picture of life in a haunting seaside town. Claire’s father, Nozias, struggles to cope with both his wife’s death and the responsibility of taking care of his new-born girl, leading him to debate whether or not to give his child up for a better life; a decision that is answered on Claire’s seventh birthday. But when Nozias decides to give her up, Claire unexpectedly runs away. The story is sombre and heart-breaking right from the start and you can easily empathize with Nozias and Claire. But it is the other villagers’ tragic stories and the way they connect to the father and daughter that really make you feel like you are reading something special. Each interlocking story takes you on a new eye-opening journey through this community of people and it’s the human connections and tragedies and triumphs they share that makes Claire of the Sea Light definitely worth reading. “A gorgeous novel that through death, explores what it means to be alive…” – Miami New Times by Kia-Marie Khelawan | Website: www.thebookbagger.com

Lifestyle that sparks imagination. For Verena, the glint that ignited the fire of Island Lotus came to her in a most unusual manner. It began as routine day of cleaning when she became trapped in her closet. In this moment, the feeling of being shut in conjured images of the ensnared “Sita” of the Hindu epic, The Ramayana, along with thoughts on life and death. Image in mind and the creative nerves alive, the History major initiated what would materialise as her debut film venture, her Island Lotus.

Getting To Know Actress

Verena soon realised however, that inspiration and an artistic script alone does not ensure success. She stated that, “the passion to create it was greater than the negative voices in my head” and proceeded onto the “scariest” thing she ever attempted. When it comes to configuring a film no one is an island, and affirms that, “you need a team to bring forth a good production” and she had a great team.

Verena Siblal by Sunita Maharaj

She believes that the independence she fostered working at Synergy TV, alongside the priceless network she acquired there, truly gave her a well-built foundation from which to take that leap. In fact, Jamal Edwards who was her “extra eye” on the production of Island Lotus used to be her camera man during her stint as a hostess. With production of Island Lotus close to completion and the music of Aaron and Helen Marquez enveloping the piece, Verena is abuzz with excitement and anxiety. She is excited for her work to be showcased but anxious about the critics. She fears that some may simply write her off as an actress and say “she should stick to selling fete tickets.”

D

ennis Waitley wrote, “You’ve got to have a dream, if you want to have a dream come true.” It would seem that those dreams are well on the way of coming true for Trinidadian model, TV personality, businesswoman and now budding actress Verena Siblal. Most of us remember Verena as a spunky hostess on Synergy TV from a few years aback. Today she is busy as co-founder of O2 Ticket, a first of its kind in Trinidad specialising in electronic tickets that has modernized the traditional ticketing system. Completely paperless, the entrepreneur is doing her fair share of helping the environment. Business aside, the juicy story here is Verena’s plunge into the local film industry. Despite the fact that Trinidad and Tobago has been a host location for a number of international films, Swiss Family Robinson (1960) and Dulha Mil Gaya (2010) come to mind, local writers, actors and producers face numerous obstacles along their journey.

In collaboration with Jamal Edwards, whom she met at Synergy TV she wrote, produced, directed and acted in Island Lotus. Although a full length script was initially planned, the financial backing was not there and the multi-talented Verena altered her course. According to her this film “emerged out of resourcefulness.” Sometimes, the best things come in small packages and Island Lotus appears destined to be part of that class.

It is precisely because of these obstacles that Verena’s debut onto the local film scene comes in the form of a short film. By short, she means all of 15 emotion packed minutes.

As with most creative works, the minds that produce them require a spot of inspiration. This may come in the form of a dream, a lover, an image, a sound, a smell or any other fixation

66 AUGUST 2014

Acting has long been a dream of hers and while she has done some work in the field, this film represents a reawakening of that vision. How many times do we as human beings look back on our lives and regret our failure to launch? Whether Verena goes on to win “Oscars” or plays a smaller part of this grand film industry, she will always have the satisfaction of knowing that she grabbed her dream by the horns and tamed that beast.

The film is a collage of themes, imagery and words of a time gone by. A time that cradles a unique part of Trinidad and Tobago’s history. Set during the indenture period, Island Lotus chronicles the lives and love of Sita and Ram (fitting use of symbolic names indeed), alongside the elements of racism, hope, religion and the legal system. By means of so many rich and complex ideas, a twist at the end and the intimate locations of the island, this short film promises to deliver a power-packed punch of intensity and awe.

Q4 Zara Hi Michelle, I have had so many short-lived rela tionships that I’m starting to feel as though I’m incapable of ever hav ing a lasting one. I think the problem is tha t we are bored with eac h other and we’re together just two month s now. Is there something I can do to keep ‘him’ interested?

A4 Hi Zara, not all men are the same but if you wan t to keep a man interested here are few do’s and don’ts. Never be clingy, nagging or dependent on a guy to ma ke you happy. There is not hing more radiant than a confident, happy person. For instance, you can find an activity that you both enjoy and spend quality time with each other. However, allow for personal time for both of you to pursue your own interests and hobbies. Have som e “me-time” to feel goo d about yourself and he will be more attracted to you. This little time awa y will be good for both of you too, as they say “absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

FITNESS

V

acation is here and that means you’ll be heading to the beach, ready to peel down into a sexy, body-baring swimsuit. To help you look and feel your best, here’s a workout designed to be done anywhere, burn a lot of calories and tone your entire body in just a short amount of time.

Here’s the plan. You’ll be doing a variation of High Intensity Interval Training using the exercises outlined below. This type of training is great because it raises your metabolism and heart rate immediately, which you want if you’re planning to burn fat. Also, the exercises have been chosen so you train your entire body in the workout, with focus on your tummy, butt and legs. It will be intense and challenging but squeeze this workout in 3 - 4 times a week and you won’t be squeezing into your swimsuit by the time you’re ready to hit the beach.
