atie Noonan first caught Australia’s ear with her ethereal lead vocals in the band George, when their debut album Polyserena topped the charts in 2002. Since then, she has forged a genre-defying career as one of the country’s most respected performers, and this year helms the Queensland Music Festival (July 7-30) as artistic director. Brisbane-born and raised, Katie decided to leave the city behind when she had children. “I wanted my kids to have a bit more freedom to run around … I wanted to move somewhere beautiful and in touch with nature but not too remote,” she says. During a gig in the small town of Eumundi with her band The Captains, Katie fell for the Sunshine Coast, and her family of four have lived there since. “There’s a great sense of community, a lot of us have chosen to move here from somewhere else,” Katie says. “It’s still connected, but disconnected enough to have that escape from the busy hubbub of the world.” Katie shares some of the places that make her proud to call the Sunshine Coast home.
