Help! I got into some poison ivy on a camping trip and it itches like crazy? Is there anything natural that can help?
The rash from poison ivy can be so uncomfortable, but there are things that can help. Urushiol, an oily residue from poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac plants, is what is responsible for the rash and itch. First, be sure you have fully cleansed the urushiol from your skin and clothes. Use a poison ivy soap to ensure your skin has no residue left. Be sure to wash all the clothing that could have the oil on it, using regular detergent, but using the highest temperature possible for the fabric. To help with the itch of the rash, use a topical spray with jewel weed, which can help stop the rash from worsening and reduce redness, itching and swelling. Other herbs that help topically include Grindelia flower, which blocks the enzymes that cause inflammation, helping to dry up the rash, and witch hazel, an astringent that helps clam and cool irritated skin, relieving pain and inflammation. As a bonus, an herbal spray can also help relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of insect bites and stings.
