Setting cylinder 1 to ignition TDC

Make sure that the following prerequisites are met: Turning device is installed. (For more information see: Installing the turning device on the flywheel housing, page 81.)

1

Turn crankshaft with the turning device counterclockwise. TDC marking on the flywheel and flywheel housing 1 align.

Cylinder 1 is in ignition TDC position.

The valve clearance of cylinder 1 is ready to be checked.

Setting cylinder 2 to 6 to ignition TDC

Turn crankshaft with the turning device counterclockwise. Check if the cylinder rocker arm can be moved by hand. (For more information see: Setting table, page 85.)

The cylinder rocker arm can be moved by hand.

Cylinder is in ignition TDC position.

The valve clearance of the cylinder is ready to be checked.

Checking and setting the valve clearance for the inlet valve and outlet valve

Make sure that the following prerequisites are met: The engine is in the maintenance position. (For more information see: 5.2.1 Bringing the engine into maintenance position, page 54.)

The cylinder head covers are removed. (For more information see: Removing the cylinder head cover, page 79.)

The cylinder to be checked is at ignition TDC. (For more information see: Setting cylinder 1 to ignition TDC, page 86.) (For more information see: Setting cylinder 2 to 6 to ignition TDC, page 86.)

Settings for valve clearance: (For more information see: 1.2.2 Valve clearance, page 21.)

Check the valve clearance.

If the valve clearance does not correspond to the settings: Release the lock nut 3 on the adjusting screw 5 of the tappet 6

Correct the setting by turning the adjusting screw 5

Hold onto the adjusting screw 5
