The top two met in 10A but it was one-way traffic, with Aldenham recording a club record 450-5. Basil Letts 130 from 66 balls (13x4s, 8x6s) was surpassed by Chris Munroe, whose 150 from 81 balls (7x4s & 13x6s) included five 6s in one over! In reply, Bayford & Hertford II could only muster 202-9.

For a ‘Club of the Day Award’ how about Hoddesdon? Their four teams today all bowled first and in total took 40 wickets while conceding 582 runs at an average of 14.55 runs per wicket (and conceding an average run rate of 3.63 per over). In reply, those four teams lost only five wickets while amassing 590 runs at an average of 118 runs per wicket, at an average of 6.65 runs per over. Some sort of record?

Finally, congrats to Old Owens in Division One, Rickmansworth and Tewin in 6A, Old Camdenians in 7A and Leverstock Green in 9A, who became the first teams to be promoted, after today’s results.

Week 16. 18 August Straightforward wins for the top four in the Premier meant we already knew who would compete in the play-offs. Totteridge M, N Mymms, Potters Bar and Welwyn GC. You had to look further down for stories and the best two were individual performances. The outstanding bowling effort was delivered by Harpenden skipper Ben Frazer. In the battle of the bottom two teams, he ensured that his side’s 247-7 (Ben Clements 111*) was totally out of reach to Letchworth, single-handedly reducing them to 27-5. Harpenden’s win by 124 runs confirmed Letchworth’s relegation. The top batting effort, in terms of share of his side’s total, came from Hertford’s James Leather. Coming in when Mymms had reduced them to 6 for 3, he virtually monopolised the scoring and was last man out, having contributed 90 of the 146 total. The best game of the day was WGC’s victory at Stortford. In pursuit of the home team’s 242, Welwyn were indebted to Matthew Grant’s 41* off 25 balls. But that’s only half the story. Facing the last over, he needed to score 18 runs to give his side the win, and promptly hit two sixes off the first three balls. A two and a dot meant four required off the final delivery. He went for broke – another six! In the Championship, Leverstock Green defeated Ampthill by 11 runs. Nothing unusual there but the match had 48 wides and the Leverstock total of 218 included 48 extras! The top score off the bat was just 42! Here’s a first, with maybe a hint of how this review could appear in future. In 10B Parkfield II scored 200-8 and beat Bentley Heath II by one run. To see how close it was at the end, you can watch a short video on YouTube! www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh8hXF8vzKA&feature=youtu.be There was possibly another first at Waltham Cross in 5A. A streaker! The club shares its new and very grand pavilion with Cheshunt Rugby Club and the match against Watford Town II was played to the accompaniment of the rugby lads enjoying their pre-season BBQ. All very orderly at first but as the drink flowed and the music grew louder, the ‘games’ became more boisterous. During a drinks break in the 2nd innings, one of the rugby squad, a small chap, must have won a sizeable bet for his rapid streak through the bemused cricketers.
