The HJLD is the regional branch of the National Junior Lawyers Division. We represent all student members of the Law Society enrolled through the SRA, trainees and Solicitors with up to five years’ active PQE who live, study or work in Hertfordshire. Our aim is to promote both professional and personal growth within the legal field through social and professional events and seminars. We shall keep you informed of important matters that concern junior lawyers, arrange CPD sessions that are either free or at reduced rates, and organise inclusive social events throughout the year. We will strive to make your voice heard and support the National JLD who works directly with the Law Society.

Hertfordshire is set to mark the anniversary of the Magna Carta A copy of the original Magna Carta is currently appearing in St Albans for the first time, to celebrate its 800th anniversary. An exhibition about the Magna Carta can be viewed at the Museum of St Albans. The Junior Lawyers’ Division is involved with the anniversary of the Magna Carta at the National Level and there are due to be events planned over the next 2 years, leading up to the actually anniversary date in 2015. Your outgoing National Rep, Laura Mathew is one of 4 Junior Lawyers who have been invited to join the Magna Carta Sub-Committee which also includes: Master of the Rolls (Chairman), Nick Fluck, Lucy ScottMoncrieff, Peter Farr (Secretary), Lord Clarke, Lord Goldsmith & Lord Neuberger. What is the Magna Carta? Magna Carta is the Latin for Great Charter. On 19 June 1215 at Runnymede, King John signed the Magna Carta. It was the first formal document stating that a King was subject to the law and not above it. This meant people couldn't be arrested, imprisoned of have their possessions taken away except by the judgement of his equals and/or the law of the land. This laid the way for trial by jury.

@HertsJLD

The Magna Carta limited royal authority for the first time, establishing the principle that the people of England, at this stage represented by the Barons, could limit the power of a King.

CPD Event: 24th October UCL Current Legal Problems Lectures “Frenzied Law Making: Over criminalization by numbers” 1 Free CPD The New Labour government was accused of frenzied law making, creating a criminal offence for every day spent in office. The current government, responding to these concerns, has introduced a “gateway” mechanism to halt the tide of criminalisation. New research suggests that the accusations levelled against the last government badly underestimated the reality: criminal offences were – and despite the gateway mechanism, are still – created at a far greater rate than one a day. But what does this actually mean, and what should we do about it?.

The now infamous James Bond boat party took place on 29th June. We were delighted to be hosting it together with South Essex Junior Lawyers and together with our sponsors; Puresearch, 36 Bedford Row, Debenhams Ottaway and Wesleyan for Lawyers. A great time was had by all and we partied late into the night with a well stocked bar and a packed dance floor. Everyone looked amazing and really went the extra mile with the theme. We were even lucky with the weather! This was an event that will definitely need to be repeated; as several members of the committee had wanted to say all along... Next time "we're going to need a bigger boat".
