Biomedicina [BIOMEDICINE] A series edited by Daniel E. Gomez Some 2400 years ago, Democritus suggested that living organisms were composed of atom clusters which decayed and were constantly replaced by new ones. Fields of study in biological sciences and medicine have changed through the years. Scientists have come to understand that living matter is divided into different organization levels, while the grounds to explain how organisms work, both in normal and pathological circumstances, have shifted from the macroscopic level to the microscopic and molecular levels. Recent developments in identification of molecular elements which determine cellular behavior have increasingly modified human understanding of the origins of diseases. This molecular revolution has led to a new shift in those fields of study. In many cases, this new scientific stage has been creating some confusion, since the language of genes appears to be almost abstract. This Biomedicine Series intends to show that such shift stands as a formidable opportunity for cognition, while it also aims at introducing significant tools for building unprecedented biological knowledge. Paperback | 15.5 x 22.5 cm

Introducci贸n a la oncolog铆a molecular [An Introduction to Molecular Oncology] Daniel E. Gomez Daniel F. Alonso isbn 987-9173-29-5 1998 | 208 p. | 320 g $ 23 | usd 6,14

New information as applied to disease diagnosis and treatment is growing rapidly, which makes it hard to stay updated. This books leads us through major topics in molecular biology and oncology, such as communication within and between cells, the role of tissue remodeling, oncogenes and tumor supressor genes, the basis for cell chemoresistance mechanisms and, last but not least, a selection of the latest perspectives on the issue. An essential book for students and professionals.

Current research on regenerative medicine seems to have the power to impact millions of lives all around the globe, becoming a new paradigm. However, the latest developments on this kind of therapy are moving forward slowly, as a result of both technical and scientific difficulties, as well as the lack of an internationally-accepted regulatory framework and the existence of ethical controversies. The need to establish international consensus committees involving scientists, philosophers, ethicists, lawyers, and representatives from different religions and populations is becoming increasingly evident. Most of the articles in this volume have been written by medical doctors and researchers from the Italian Hospital at Buenos Aires. Pablo Argibay is head of the Hospital’s Institute for Basic Sciences and Experimental Medicine.

Biotecnología [Biotechnology] María Antonia Muñoz de Malajovich Translation from Portuguese into Spanish and technical revision: Gabriela Levitus isbn 987-558-096-1 2006, 1st edition | 2007, 1st reprint | 400 p. | illus. | 620 g $ 40 | usd 10,68

This book aims at introducing readers to a fascinating open road in the sciences. Through her unique educational approach, the author leads us into one of the most promising fields in biology for the 21st Century, providing her comprehensive, dynamic vision. From the very beginning, she offers an accurate definition of the current paradigm in biotechnology: she describes it as “an activity based on multiple disciplines, which aims at creating useful products or solving problems through biological agents”. Based on this conceptual framework, the author helps us realize how much influence biotechnology has on the widest variety of fields in human activity. Not only does she delve into the foundations of this discipline, but she also goes into the details of its uses in manufacturing, agriculture, food production, environmental sciences, and energy.

Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad [SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY] A series edited by Pablo Kreimer This book series aims at contributing to develop a new field for social studies on science and technology in Latin America, covering different issues, theories, approaches, and possibilities for new inquiries. This contribution is based on two strategies that complement each other: publishing theoretical and empirical work by Latin American authors, on the one hand; and translating relevant work by researchers from industrialized nations, on the other. This editorial project seeks to serve as a tool for introducing new ideas, as well as discussing processes associated with scientific and technological knowledge production, use, and management, both in the current context and in history. Therefore, each topic is approached from different perspectives in its multiple social, political, historical, cultural, ideological, economic, and ethical dimensions. Paperback | 15 x 20 cm

Ensayos en campera [Essays in a Jacket] Jorge A. Sabato isbn 987-558-028-7 2004 | 216 p. | 280 g $ 24 | usd 6,41

This new edition of Ensayos en campera, first published in 1979, aims at recovering physicist Jorge Sabato’s innovative thinking and his firm beliefs. Sabato’s key concept –the socalled “triangle” of government, higher education, and business– was “a basic, almost primitive insight into the more complex institutional, economic and technological network of interconnections and co-evolution between micro and macro systems, which represent the infrastructural foundations for long-term growth in any society,” says Jorge Katz. Technology production in Argentina and the involvement of the government, the higher education system, and the business sector in a network that is necessary to build modern societies serve as coordinates for a number of somewhat ironic reflections from this essential Argentine researcher and thinker.

Producción y uso social de conocimientos Estudios de sociología de la ciencia y la tecnología en América Latina [Social Production and Use of Knowledge. Studies in Sociology of Science and Technology in Latin America] Pablo Kreimer et al. isbn 987-558-030-9 2004 | 212 p. | 420 g $ 32 | usd 8,54

Studies in sociology of science and technology are a key tool for knowledge production processes development in Latin America. This book examines a wide range of experiences in social production and use of knowledge, while it addresses the following questions: How and why is knowledge produced in Latin America? Why does such knowledge have almost no impact on the region’s economy? Which are the mechanisms that drive research and development initiatives in Latin America? And which are the mechanisms that deter the transformation of such knowledge into innovations? A critical analysis of these experiences provides some keys to understanding the current scenario, as well as the role for science and technology in recent socio-economic development processes.

La fabricación del conocimiento Un ensayo sobre el carácter constructivista y contextual de la ciencia Original title: Manufacture of Knowledge. An Essay on the Constructivist and Contextual Nature of Science Karin Knorr Cetina Translated into Spanish by María Isabel Stratta isbn 987-558-050-3 2005 | 368 p. | 480 g $ 39 | usd 10,41

This book by Karin Knorr Cetina is already a classic, even though it was written only some 25 years ago. Indeed, the sociology of scientific knowledge is quite a young discipline. At the same time, paradoxical though it may sound, this is a relatively unknown classic, especially among Spanish-speaking readers, as it had only been published in English and German so far. From the depths of scientific research labs, its author poses questions on a wide array of issues which go beyond scientists’ workplaces, urging us to reflect on the nature of knowledge, its links with culture, the relationship between epistemology and culture and, most importantly, on the social production of knowledge.

El Leviathan y la bomba de vacío Hobbes, Boyle y la vida experimental Original title: Leviathan and the Air-Pump. Hobbes, Boyle, and the Experimental Life Steven Shapin Simon Schaffer Translated into Spanish by Alfonso Buch isbn 987-558-059-7 2005 | 512 p. | illus. | 640 g $ 40 | usd 10,68

Social studies of science and technology are quite recent as a discipline, especially in Spanish-speaking countries. The author’s thesis and the contents of this book make it an essential part of such emerging field of study. This comprehensive work contains a wide scope of interesting elements for experts in a whole range of social sciences. Indeed, it should concern sociologists and science historians as a classic in their field. It should concern political scientists and philosophers as a study that delves into the origins of their discipline from an unusual perspective, exploring the relationship between Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan and the naturalism debate in the 17th Century. And it should also concern epistemologists and philosophers of science as it addresses some fundamental issues in their area of studies, such as the discovery vs. construction debate.

Forma y función de un sujeto moderno Bernardo Houssay y la fisiología argentina (1900-1943) [Form and Function of a Modern Subject. Bernardo Houssay and Physiology in Argentina (1900-1943)] Alfonso Buch isbn 987-558-095-3 2006 | 496 p. | 640 g $ 42 | usd 11,21

The topics discussed in this book are Argentina, its physicians and researchers, as well as scientific knowledge and social conflict, mainly revolving around Dr. Bernardo Houssay, who was awarded a Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1947. Dr. Houssay’s career and background justify the rather ambitious title of this book, as this Argentine scientist was, in a way, a paradigm of what we have come to call modernity. In his figure we can observe some essential symbolic structures which usually lie at the foundation of the scientist’s role and, therefore, account for something more than a haphazard combination of personal circumstances.

“O inventamos o erramos” La ciencia como idea-fuerza en América Latina [“Either We Invent or We Err”. Science as an IdeaForce in Latin America] Hebe Vessuri isbn 978-987-558-124-1 2007 | 400 p. | 520 g $ 41 | usd 10,95

Nowadays, knowledge issues are dealt with in a wide scope of contexts, ranging from the specialized discourse of scientific policy and higher education to the more general scenario of globalization and competitiveness. Since knowledge has been declared to be a key feature for the present and the future of our society, it is not surprising that it has increasingly become a politically charged notion, with a wide range of agendas at stake. Governments in developed and developing nations have come to realize that citizen commitment is vital to ensure that science and technology meet people’s needs.

This book includes several articles for reference on the new sociology of technology, while it aims at raising two issues: how to break fossilized commonsense notions on technology as a “neutral” and “autonomous” system that results from the lineal processes of the “applied sciences”; and how to describe technology’s role in social, cultural, political, and economic processes. Everyone, from lay readers to scientists, economists, sociologists, anthropologists, and historians, will find in Actos, actores y artefactos new theoretical and methodological approaches to the links between technology and society.

Los científicos Entre poder y saber Original title: Les Scientifiques. Entre Pouvoir et savoir Jean-Jacques Salomon Translated from French into Spanish by Leila Gándara isbn 978-987-558-158-6 2008 | 520 p. | 640 g $ 70 | usd 18,69

This book is among the first studies to portray the history of “science as a profession”, in Max Weber’s words. It discusses different stages in the formation of a collective space designed for creating knowledge and interacting with society, in a sometimes deliberate fashion. One of the main issues in Salomon’s work is historical change in the relationship between science and technology as social products and power resources.

Cambiar el orden Replicación e inducción en la práctica científica Original title: Changing Order. Replication and Induction in Scientific Practice Harry Collins Translated into Spanish by Alfonso Buch isbn 978-987-558-182-1 2009 | 288 p. | illus. | 380 g $ 52 | usd 13,88

This book, which was first published in 1992, has already become a classic work on sociology of science. Contrary to an externalist vision of science, Harry Collins’ study explores how scientists behave in their research practices, how they try to replicate experiments, how they draw conclusions from their lab work, and how they frame their public debate based on those practices, experiments, and conclusions. The author examines these issues in three different cases, namely: tea-laser building, detection of gravitational radiation, and experiments in paranormal phenomena. However, analysis of these case studies does not focus exclusively on “technical” issues. Instead, throughout the book Collins outlines his vision on science, knowledge, and their social dimensions in special. Indeed, this “maintenance of order” does not concern science alone, but it is also sought by society.

La enfermedad de Chagas en la Argentina Investigación científica, problemas sociales y políticas sanitarias [Chagas Disease in Argentina. Scientific Research, Social Issues, and Health Policies] Juan Pablo Zabala isbn 978-987-558-195-1 2010 | 360 p. | illus. | 460 g $ 65 | usd 17,35

A hundred years after it was first discovered, Chagas disease still affects some three million people in Argentina. A symbol of poverty and social inequality, it has posed a challenge for scientific researchers and health policy-makers since the early 20th Century. This book describes the development of the disease in Argentina, providing details about all researchers, physicians, scientists, agencies, and public policies involved, while keeping track of conceptions and strategies implemented throughout the 20th Century. As a result, readers can learn the history of the disease in Argentina, while taking part in a national debate about the complex relationship between scientific research and government intervention in social conflict.

Ciencia expandida Naturaleza común y saber profano [Expanded Science. Common Nature and Amateur Knowledge] Antonio Lafuente Alonso Andoni Foreword by Langdom Winner isbn 978-987-558-212-5 2010 | 240 p. | 300 g $ 55 | usd 14,68

According to Langdom Winner, this book explores the many ways knowledge resources can be expanded, nurtured, and enhanced through an interconnection among a number of inquiring minds from different disciplines and places in today’s world. The authors (physicist and science historian Antonio Lafuente, and philosopher Andoni Alonso) describe and celebrate these new research communities and their vitality, while they also elaborate on how these communities work. As they clearly show, these communities’ ultimate source lies in groups of people with major issues in mind who have managed to effectively join and expand their capacities beyond the often bridled boundaries of conventional research.

De los quipus a los satélites Historia de la tecnología en la Argentina [From Khipus to Satellites. A History of Technology in Argentina] Tomás Buch Carlos E. Solivérez The pressing need for a history of technology in Argentina is widely justified, as we know almost nothing about it. Our rich historiography tradition has so far restricted science and technology issues to a few simple, uninformed fact descriptions. In Argentina, there are no histories of major science and technology institutions, but just a few analyses of technological development processes, mostly from an economic perspective. CONVERGENCIA. Entre memoria y sociedad [CONVERGENCES. BEWTEEN MEMORY AND SOCIETY] A series edited by Noemí Girbal-Blacha As implied in its title, this series embraces pluralism, ideological openness, and a willingness to include the whole spectrum of Humanities and Social Sciences, which feeds it and aims to define its unique character. Its main goal is to make a contribution in our attempt to construct and reconstruct memory, seeking to understand heterogeneity, consistency, continuity, and discontinuity in social phenomena, while recovering a critical outlook on historical processes to reconsider them under the light of contemporary events. Paperback | 15.5 x 22.5 cm

It is necessary to understand that there is a strong link among environment, society, and nature, even if we consider them as three different categories. Indeed, if environment is defined as a consequence of the nature-society relationship, it becomes vital to explore and analyze its social construction process from a Social Science perspective.

Contrarrevolución en la Argentina 1900-1932 La Liga Patriótica Argentina Original title: Counterrevolution in Argentina. 1900-1932. The Argentine Patriotic League Sandra McGee Deutsch Translated into Spanish by Mario Ranaletti isbn 987-558-014-7 2003 | 272 p. | 380 g $ 29 | usd 7,74

This book introduces a case study on the counterrevolutionary movement in Argentina, where said political trend has remained vital since the 1920s. The author focuses on the Argentine Patriotic League, Argentina’s first counterrevolutionary organization, which was created in 1919 and became one of the most powerful political movements in the country during that period. She examines the local forces and ideological currents that nurtured it, the circumstances under which it took shape, the profile of its members, and the activities it undertook, as well as the League’s social, political, and economic worldviews.

In the first part of this book, the author examines the “criminality issue” and its many features in Argentina until the 1940s. She focuses on the urban underworld and its main players, on controversies over Italian immigration, and on medical and legal assessment of Italian immigrants. In the second part of the book, she explores some initiatives aimed at addressing the population “quality” and “quantity” issues from the inside. This work intends to bridge the gap between “gringos” and Indians, two of the groups that were most seriously marginalized by power elites in Argentina over the discussed period.

isbn 987-558-031-7 2004 | 214 p. | 320 g $ 23 | usd 6,14

This extraordinary study deals with a complex issue –the history of the so-called “Gran Argentina”, an entity which was intended to comprise the former territories of the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata. The author’s analysis is nurtured by a wide range of perspectives, from diplomatic history to legal, intellectual, and cultural approaches. He focuses on the construction of Argentina’s national imaginary on the basis of territorial definition and boundary demarcation, while he also examines the intellectual origins of nationalism in Argentina through the works of diplomat Vicente Quesada (1830-1913). In his major contribution to the study of this process in Argentina, the author proves that there is a hidden division between territorial and “revisionist” nationalism, which has had an impact on the way both have spread and been later adopted by their intellectual heirs, mainly in Argentina’s liberal tradition.

Industria, finanzas e instituciones en la Argentina La experiencia del Banco Nacional de Desarrollo. 1967-1976 [Manufacturing, Finances, and Institutions in Argentina. The National Development Bank of Argentina. 1967-1976] Marcelo Rougier isbn 987-558-027-9 2004 | 352 p. | 500 g $ 29 | usd 7,74

This study explores the history of the National Development Bank of Argentina, a government-run institution which was created to fund the manufacturing industry in the 1960s and 70s. The author addresses such economic history issue as the performance of a government agency which used to act as an instrument of industrial policy. While the book reveals a clear tendency towards microhistory, it will still enable readers to reflect on general models and initiatives for development and industrialization, governmentcorporate relationships, and the link between macroeconomics and microeconomics.

Despite its relevance, early 20th Century Latin American right has received little scholarly attention. If we were to read a list of the published work on Latin America for that century, we would be led to believe that Leftist ideas and revolutionary change have prevailed in this region for the last hundred years. However, Latin American countries have been more often ruled by the Right. Extreme conservative and rightwing movements, even when they are not in power, have consistently managed to remain important. In Las derechas, Sandra McGee Deutsch helps to cover this academic gap through a comparative study of the right in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile from 1890 to 1939.

The so-called “Conquest of the Desert” in Argentina was not so much a military campaign as the creation of a framework to describe relationships between Argentina as a nation and its native peoples. This “desert’s” invention has actually shaped the idea that it was all empty land, therefore deleting from national history any trace of the independent peoples that inhabited those areas before said campaign, in the late 19th Century. What happened to Mapuche and Tehuelche communities after such oppression? How can we follow the steps of surviving families and communities after they were deprived of their lands, confined, divided, and deported?

There is still little knowledge about colonization processes through the Northwestern border of the Chaco province in the late-nineteenth and earlytwentieth centuries. This book explores disciplining and assimilation attempts introduced by religious missions in native communities of the area, including a reconstruction of inter-ethnical relationships, land settlement and expropriation processes, and the main features of production. The scenario is an infant Nation-State, where the provinces of Salta and Jujuy endow the borders of Chaco with a specific economic role. The history of this region’s incorporation is analyzed under the light of both national-level projects and local-level processes. The border is approached as a subject that can be historicized, describing its singularities and the relationships it established with the nation as whole.

This book examines land possession and privatization, as well as the creation of a land market in the Pampas region while capitalism was developing in the area. The author focuses on the Chascomús, Ranchos, and Monte districts, which were especially attractive to land settlers in 1779, when frontier expansion was launched, until 1880, when the so-called “Conquest of the Desert” military campaign came to an end. This local approach has enabled the author to identify each of the methods implemented to assign public lands to private hands, such as donations, auctions, sales, emphyteusis, and a kind of lease known as moderada composición.

This volume gathers articles by an interdisciplinary team of geographers and historians seeking to account for the processes that have turned the Argentine provinces of Mendoza and San Juan into one of the first “regional economies” in the country, which is now known as Argentina’s Wine Region. The examined period is plenty of transformations towards a new economic, social, and territorial configuration, driven by the overwhelming force of capitalism, which would help integrate the region into the national realm, establishing links between its economic activity and the domestic market, while breaking a long-standing tradition of shared interests with Chile.

In the early 1990s, historian Javier Balsa interviewed traditional farmers from the province of Buenos Aires to study the impact of the Great Depression on agriculture in the Pampas. However, as he moved on with his survey, something else caught his attention: there was a growing distance between descriptions of everyday life in the farms of the 1920s and 30s, and the evidence he observed in his interviewees and their families while he was conducting his research. These differences involved not only their economic resources, but also their lifestyle, which had been deeply affected. It was in those occasions that he became interested in describing transformations undergone by farmers in the Pampas from the 1930s to the early 1990s, which has given birth to this book.

Debates on the different methods for land possession, such as ownership, leasing, and sharecropping, became increasingly significant in late-19th Century Argentina. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of agricultural policies, their foundational discourse, and their impact on land possession and ownership in the province of Buenos Aires through case studies and a comparative approach that enables the author to account for heterogeneous social production structures and to describe the special relationship among land possession methods, farming activities, and prevailing types of land exploitation. A study of the Benito Juárez, Gonzales Chaves, Bolívar, and Pergamino districts sheds light on patterns and discontinuities in the agricultural policies of the period.

Mario Lattuada isbn 987-558-075-9 2006 | 272 p. | 400 g $ 34 | usd 9,08

Through an approach that combines contributions from collective action, corporatism, and social movement theories, the author describes the main changes in Argentina’s economic, institutional, and political scenarios in the 1990s, while analyzing their impact on the agricultural sector and its social structure. He also delves into the transformations undergone by these social agents and the associations they participate in, whether economic or political. An attempt to strengthen the new social regime governing capital accumulation has driven the agricultural sector to take a paradoxical turn: technological upgrading has gathered pace, while agricultural output and exports have doubled, but at the same time social and economic farming structures have become more concentrated.

This book explores the process of national state formation in Argentina through the lens of the special relationship between the government and each of the ten territorial states that later comprised the country. Framed by a conservative order, these territorial states’ creation is closely linked with the national state, which implemented a sort of controlled republicanism that the author describes as “republicanismo tutelado”. Political rights restriction and coercion in the exercise of power stand out as the most visible signs of survival of Juan Bautista Alberdi’s “possible Republic”, which remained alive until the Peronist period, when most national territories were integrated into the country’s political structure as actual provinces.

In the late-19th Century, different sectors began demanding from Argentina’s government a specialized school system and an agricultural curriculum in rural primary schools. This book intends to explore those public policies which resulted in the creation of an agricultural school system in the Pampas region, addressing the relationship between government, education, and rural society from 1897 to 1955, when the country reached a turning point in terms of the national and popular Peronist experience. The author seeks to show an interaction between education history and socio-economic history of rural areas, which might lead to a richer, more complex examination of the subject, offering some new core issues to discuss.

This book describes the intellectual and political careers of a group of reformist, leftwing academics during the interwar period in Argentina. Led by Argentine philosopher Alejandro Korn, Dominican philologist Pedro Henríquez Ureña, and Argentine lawyer and politician Alfredo Palacios, these Latin American thinkers participated in student struggles for University Reform in 1918, while they also drove a great number of initiatives for university management and cultural events in the 1920s and 30s. In addition, the author provides a detailed account of their intellectual relationships with students and other reformist colleagues.

This volume addresses agricultural policy in the administrations of Brazilian President Getulio Vargas (1930-1945, 1951-1954) and Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón (1946-1955), who aimed at including farm workers in the capitalist development projects each of them sought to implement. For a deeper insight into both administrations, the author discusses correspondence exchanged between rural workers and each of the Presidents, a communication channel that served as a “hot line” of sorts, through which those workers managed to make their voices heard, opposing landowners as their political enemies.

In Cuestión social y políticas sociales en la Argentina, the author discusses the historical process that led to the formation of a social proto-state in Córdoba between 1900 and 1930, i.e., the complex and flexible path that led from solidarity at the civil-society level to widespread solidarity at the institutional level. Likewise, the author also inquiries into the multiple dimensions of social issues, the conception of social issues which underlies different decisions on regulation and investment, and the government’s material and institutional intervention through public spending and changes in tax structures, as well as provincial and local legislation and welfare programs.

This volume results from the author’s insightful research on relationships between farming unions, landowner associations, the government, and other social agents from the agricultural sector in the Pampas region. It covers the period that ranged from a military intervention in the province of Santa Fe to quell farmer demonstrations and rioting in 1928 through the passage of harsh labor legislation during President Peron’s first term in office. The author effectively recovers local history, workers’ memories, and unionist experience through accurate historical research, offering a novel view on interventionist-welfare state origins and development in Argentina through its relationship with rural workers.

One of the key dimensions of contemporary societies is education, understood as a system of practices and institutions with specific learning goals. Presentday Nation-states feature almost no institution as far-reaching and extended as their education systems. In Argentina, it involves over 40,000 schools and universities, which employ more than 700,000 teachers, assistants, officials, and other workers, and serve almost 10 million students. However, resources allocated to this massive social effort are not enough to meet the needs of modern life.

Most public and nonprofit organizations usually implement strategic management processes. In theory, strategic management is deceptively simple: it involves reviewing and analyzing present and past circumstances, forecasting the future, steering the organization in a given direction, and introducing measures to fulfill its mission. But in practice, it usually turns out to be a complex endeavor requiring an approach that enables stakeholders to recognize and assess external factors, while adapting and enhancing organizational resources and capacities to successfully achieve their goals.

These questions focus on the challenges involved in literature and language teaching, which are discussed by language didactics and faced by teachers themselves in their everyday work, when planning a course or drafting a program.

Compared to other countries in Latin America, Argentina’s managed to remain a democratic society for most of the 20th Century, when mobility was the rule rather than the exception. Since 1912, when the government passed the socalled Saenz Peña Law, which granted universal male suffrage, democratic institutions were in place for short periods, while republican institutionality barely endured democratization processes in the political arena. Shifts in society had their own impact on the terms of political coexistence, resulting in as traumatic an experience as a military regime in the mid-1970s and early-1980s. This book aims to explore development parallels and contradictions between society and politics, democracy and republic, in a context of economic and cultural change.

This book focuses on the economic, social, cultural, and political features of major historical processes in the Western world from a social history perspective, as defined by Eric Hobsbawm. The author discusses some of the key stages in the history of Western societies, such as the formation of feudalism through some remaining features of the Ancient World, the development of the bourgeoisie, the transition to capitalism, the bourgeois revolutions, the rise and fall of the bourgeois world, the emergence of socialism and the “Third World”, the birth of Neoliberalism, the fall of the Soviet Union, and the latest social developments in the contemporary world.

Current geography is indeed an heir of the past, but it also focuses on space organization and resource valuation as required by contemporary societies. The world is changing under our eyes, as landscapes and territories undergo daily transformations, while old states die and new ones are born. In this book, political science is considered as a cognitive activity that seeks to build a social system framework for politics, which should contribute to empirical and theoretical research on political events. The realm of politics stands as a specific dimension of social life, involving production and reproduction of the ways and means of domination (i.e, government structures), as well as the ways and means of power that enable members of society to build and connect those structures. Therefore, politics cannot be studied and understood in scientific terms unless its specific nature as a dimension of social life is recognized.

Thousands of children and teenagers attend school on a daily basis for nine months a year in Argentina. In spite of the fact that this sounds so familiar, school education is quite recent in Argentine history. This book provides some meaningful insights into the making of modern-day school, inquiring into our present, and thinking up alternatives for the future. With no preset course, we can ask ourselves what education is and what it ought to be, a key question for pedagogy as an activity that takes place in the present, but whose impact can only be seen in the future. Hence, discussing what education is should be as important as asking ourselves about its meaning. Who are our students? Who are we as teachers? What can we pass on to younger people? What do we see as valid culture for the 21st Century? What kind of relationships do we establish with younger people? Which are the tensions that cut across different pedagogic devices nowadays?

In this book, the author suggests that mutual tension and feedback between the equal –whether partners or competitors– and the unequal –whether dominator or dominated– should be explored to find the etiology of violence, its main engine. Although this is a shared structure for every system where status signals continue to inflect current expansion of the citizenship contract, gender relations are here considered a paradigmatic scenario for said structure. Throughout the “long history of patriarchy”, as the author calls it, these relations make up the core of all violence.

In this book, feminist theory and multiculturalism intertwine to explore the advantages and disadvantages of a multicultural perspective for women. María Luisa Femenías seeks to provide an outlook on the different shapes that feminism and women’s rights claims have taken in Latin America, from the dismantling of ethnic/class solidarity bonds that drives “black” women exclusion to a critical review of the role women played in revolutionary struggle through the 1970s.

The articles collected in this volume result from anthropological research conducted in Brazil, Spain, and Argentina about children and childhood, but they do not belong in the realm of so-called ethnography or anthropology of childhood. Rather, they focus on the great number of legal-bureaucratic devices designed for intervention on a demographic group that can be subject to guardianship, judicial control, illegal appropriation, and adoption. Through an insight into the multiple devices at work in contexts of great inequality to “protect”, “guarantee”, and/or “restore” children’s rights, these essays seek to discuss different intervention methods, which do not boil down to unilateral action by courts and governments on passive subjects, while they should neither be subject to opposing doctrines.

While it does not embrace either of those extreme positions, this series does recognize that there are philosophical assumptions and implications in science, while philosophical reflection on science is essential for a better understanding of scientific phenomena. Including recent studies as well as classic works so far unavailable to Spanishspeaking readers, this series seeks to spread the ideas that have emerged from an intertwining of those disciplines, which epitomize C.P. Snow’s “two cultures”, thus helping to bridge the gaps between them. Paperback | 15 x 23 cm

This book gathers most of the papers presented at “I Encuentro Internacional ‘Perspectivas actuales de la metateoría estructuralista’”, an academic meeting organized by a small group of Spanish-speaking philosophers who sought to discuss methodological and epistemological issues in science from a structuralist perspective. This event, which took place in México in 1998, was the first to be held on the topic among Spanish speakers at an international level.

This book contains the first translation into Spanish of two unpublished works by Isaac Newton: “De gravitatione et æquipondio fluidorum” and “De ære et ætere”. The former has been translated almost entirely and it features extensive annotations and comments, while the latter has been fully translated and it introduces two short essays about its contents. Both pieces show some surprising features facing a traditional interpretation of Newton’s Principia, but they also exhibit plausible evidence about the origins and development of some fundamental concepts in Newtonian physics. This volume also gathers a number of essays by Laura Benítez and José A. Robles, authors, translators, and experts on the subject, which highlight Newton’s connection with Descartes, on the one hand, and Berkeley, on the other.

This book is the first in-depth study of philosophy of science development in the United States during the Cold War. It reveals how anti-communism shaped university curricula, philosophical research, and political persecution of prominent scholars by the fbi over that period.

Una arquitectónica para la ciencia El programa estructuralista Original title: An Architectonic for Science. The Structuralist Program Wolfgang Balzer C. Ulises Moulines Joseph D. Sneed Translated into Spanish by Pablo Lorenzano

This book is about the structure of knowledge. By “knowledge” we mean “reasoned, true belief”. This entails that knowledge consist of things like propositions or statements. By “structure” we mean simply the way in which the truth values, or probability values, of statements are interdependent. Our account of the structure of knowledge, however, requires something more than statements and logical relations among them. Indeed, we may appear to give so much attention to these other elements that the propositional nature of knowledge is ignored. We find these other elements essential to exhibiting the complexity of the structural features we find in common examples of knowledge. Our attention to these features and the somewhat elaborate technical apparatus we employ to describe them should not, however, obscure our essentially conservative and conventional views about the nature of knowledge.

José Murilo de Carvalho

These articles, previously published in American journal Telos, result from a series of debates held to discuss the current rise of populism, which has been worrying analysts around the world after the collapse of the ussr, and which is no longer restricted to those peripheral nations where it first emerged, since it has also developed in hypermodern societies.

Translated from Portuguese into Spanish by Ada Solari isbn 987-9173-10-4 1997 | 220 p. | 260 g $ 20 | usd 5,34

This innovative work on Latin American political and intellectual history probes into a battle for popular imagery waged by three opposing conceptions of Republican order. The arena is Brazil in the late-19th Century, when a new Republic was emerging, and the contenders are Liberals, Jacobins, and Positivists. Brazilian historian José Murilo de Carvalho suggests that, when this struggle for “souls” goes beyond the realm of elites, symbols, allegories, and myths become the weapons of choice.

Zygmunt Bauman discusses the role of intellectuals in the modern world, connecting it with the nature of modernism and postmodernism in cultural analysis. Indeed, intellectuals no longer “legislate” on the opinions of other members of society, competing with rival principles and beliefs. In this thought-provoking essay, Bauman focuses on how intellectuals have become “interpreters” of different points of view, and on the implications this process has had in terms of contemporary cultural analysis.

After rejecting economics, anthropology, and political science, which “over the last thirty years or so have gone to incredible lengths in order to forget the State”, the author resorts to the history of political institutions (especially the best German writings in the field), and to constitutional law, focusing mainly on those writers who are sociologically or historically informed, and whose concern with juridical analysis aids their grasp of larger political structures.

First published in 1979, this paper by Brazilian sociologist Gabriel Cohn offers a deep, thought-provoking interpretation of Max Weber’s social theory. The author provides an account of the trends, writers, and inspirations that would later resonate in the German sociologist’s work, and he discusses Weber’s conceptual framework, focusing on methodology writings and asserting that there are no discrepancies between those writings and Weber’s empirical analyses. Indeed, according to the author, Weber’s work has always been self-consistent.

Along the same lines that have shaped American intellectual history for more than a decade, these study reveals the dynamics of the new paths that have been opened by the so-called “linguistic turn”, which has brought about self-reflection on historical analysis of language. The articles by Stanley Fish, Dominick LaCapra, Richard Rorty, and Paul Rabinow, gathered in this book to complete the author’s work, shed further light on the issue.

This is not a book on cultural sociology in the us, nor does it intend to represent state-ofthe-art American sociology. Rather, the collected articles (by Craig Cathoun, José Casanova, Paul Dimaggio, Marc Steinberg, and Loïc Wacquant) seek to introduce Spanish-speaking readers with a sample of the work obtained when sociological thought involves a cultural dimension.

Available for the first time in Spanish, Political Romanticism is a powerful, insightful, and thought-provoking volume. Schmitt’s criticism and interpretation of Romanticism have led him to suggest that the romantic person’s focus lies only on his own self, ironic and ingenuous, yet light and inconsistent. Therefore, in the historical relationship between Liberalism and this basic feature of Romanticism, which also characterizes the bourgeois world that proclaimed said movement, the role of the romantic intellectual has been to cast an ironic look on the bourgeois order from an aesthetic perspective that always fails to commit to any substantive political position.

The framework for the articles collected in this volume is contemporary intellectual history, a discipline that has increasingly pushed the limits to give rise to a flourishing number of discourse modules and to broaden its own intellectual horizons. The authors draw upon different lines of thought, but they all converge, whether they consider those lines as subjects of study, or they adopt them as methodological approaches.

Vidas beligerantes Dos mujeres argentinas, dos protestas y la búsqueda de reconocimiento Original title: Contentious Lives. Two Argentine Women, Two Protests, and the Quest for Recognition Javier Auyero Translated into Spanish by Claudia Gilman isbn 987-558-026-0 2004 | 304 p. | illus. | 360 g $ 27 | usd 7,21

Nana and Laura are two young women leading different lives in God-forsaken areas of Argentina, who do not belong to any political party, organization, or union. Javier Auyero connects them to focus on their roles in two uprisings that took place in Argentina in the 1990s (a twoday protest in the northwestern city of Santiago del Estero and a six-day road blockade in the southern oil towns of Cutralco and Plaza Huincul), while he also focuses on the roles of the protests in their lives. While Nana was an activist in the former, the latter turned a teacher like Laura into a spokesperson of the so-called picketeers. The author joins two major concerns in anthropology of practice and sociological study of protests: an examination of social phenomena from an “agentic” perspective and an analysis of social struggle that focuses on self-understanding among the contending actors.

La política en las calles Entre el voto y la movilización. Buenos Aires, 1862-1880 [Politics on the Streets. Buenos Aires, 18621880: Voting Rights and Demonstrations] Hilda Sabato isbn 987-558-039-2 2004 | 304 p. | 340 g $ 25 | usd 6,67

According to the author, this book is an inquiry “into the relationship between the few that rule and the many who are ruled, into the political conflict and links between them at a given moment and in a given place: the city of Buenos Aires during the period known as National Organization (18621880)”. Hilda Sabato’s work, praised by critics since it was first published in 1998, covers a clearly-defined place and period, which allows her to examine different forms of political action and representation, relations between ruling elites and their popular followers, political parties and the role of electoral machinery, street demonstrations, and the public sphere as a space of mediation between civil society and the state.

Since the publication of Argentine writer Gastón Gori’s early work in the 1950s, European immigration to the central area of the province of Santa Fe, resulting in the agricultural revolution that transformed Argentina, has been the subject of prolific historical literature. This book revolves around the Caribbean region, and its protagonists are Caribbean poets, writers, and intellectuals. So far, modern historiography has failed to adopt the Caribbean as a subject of study, since it has mainly focused on the emergence of “nations” and independent states rather than multiple cultural exchanges, which remain largely unknown. Indeed, the Caribbean is an archipelago with no clear-cut borders or frontiers, whether geographical, political, or linguistic. It is the area where the European conquest of the Americas started. In addition, it has experienced America’s superpower policy since the late-19th Century. The author examines the early years of Caribbean writers Pedro Henríquez Ureña, José Martí, Fernando Ortiz, Ramiro Guerra y Sánchez, and Antonio S. Pedreira in this historical context of exile and diasporas.

Over the last two decades, intellectual history has seen a series of crucial redefinitions which have distinguished it from the old “history of ideas” tradition. Thus, it has managed to define new subjects of study and new approaches to those subjects, which, in turn, has transformed it into one of the most dynamic and productive human disciplines today. Indeed, its impact will soon reach beyond the realm of history itself. Quentin Skinner is regarded as one of the founders of the “Cambridge School”, best known for having started this transformation process. The articles gathered in this book serve as a key resource for a better understanding of the leading lines of thought in intellectual history nowadays, as well as a closer approach to the deepest implications of the transformations they have introduced.

Original title: Art Worlds

Rocco Carbone isbn 978-987-558-121-0 2007 | 512 p. | 600 g $ 43 | usd 11,48

This book offers a deep analysis of Roberto Arlt’s novel, Los siete locos, and the 1920s in Argentina, mostly swimming against the tide of concepts that have been coined and widely used by specialized critics. Additionally, the author includes in his study the aesthetic category of the grotesque, which enables him to discuss both Arlt’s novel and its times. Indeed, this category also enables him to draw the lines for a “third area” in Argentine literature in the 1920s, one which is not covered by the Boedo and Florida groups, seemingly the dominant literary forces of such culturally effervescent period. The literary works that make up this alternative corpus concern both social and aesthetic issues, thus creating the “real” avant-garde literature of the period, due to its radical, daring attempts at both political and aesthetic intervention in society.

The main idea in this book by noted American sociologist Howard S. Becker is that works of art are produced by cooperation, as most human practices. Therefore, art is a result of collective action. This cooperation may be either ephemeral or stable, i.e., carried out through previously established patterns and rules. At any rate, the work of art that we see, read, or listen to becomes real and enduring through cooperation. Becker defines art worlds are those interconnected networks for cooperation, and he follows no traditional artistic hierarchies when he studies those networks, as he draws comparisons between works from different backgrounds and degrees of prestige.

The aim of any discipline ought to be two things: to be clear and to be non-obvious. Real knowledge ought to be communicable. It should be possible to say it so that it can be understood. And there should be something to say, something that makes a difference once you know it, something you didn’t already know before.

This volume gathers all the available, readable material that has been preserved from the nine issues of this publication, which represented a highly radical group in the Argentine socialist movement, at the crossroads between feminism and anarchist communism. In addition, this book features an ed note by María del Carmen Feijóo and an introduction by Maxine Molyneux.

José Ingenieros and Leopoldo Lugones

This volume compiles a collection of newspaper articles with true historical value mostly unavailable in public libraries nowadays. This material provides an outline on the profile of a large share of the Buenos Aires political-intellectual circles in the late-19th Century. La Montaña, periódico socialista revolucionario was first published in that province on April 1, 1897, and it was discontinued on September 15, 1897.

A noteworthy piece in the history of Argentine thought, this book narrates the author’s failure in his attempt to support Governor Justo José de Urquiza’s crusade to defeat Commander Juan Manuel de Rosas. It was late 1852, and Sarmiento found himself at a singular point in his political and intellectual career, where he realized that he was increasingly at odds with Governor Urquiza’s proposals for a new order, which he deemed too similar to the regime they had just managed to overthrow.

From an intellectual history perspective, and based on the theory that ideas and representations are insufficient but necessary to describe historical events, Marcelo Padoan’s preliminary study draws on the discursive dimension of Yrigoyenism to shed light on the constitution of its own political identity. Thus, the author provides an outlook of the transformation from late19th Century political style into a new set of styles and values driven by Hipólito Yrigoyen, which have redefined the nature of Radicalism, conceiving of it as a movement identified with the whole nation, while they have also endowed the movement’s leader with some apostolic and messianic features.

At the turn of the 19th Century, Paul Groussac played an essential role in the development of an intellectual realm in Argentina through his work as a writer, journalist, historian, polemicist, and director of the country’s National Library. This book gathers some short essays, newspaper articles, lectures, obituaries, brochures, bibliography bulletins, travel notes, and other writings that serve as evidence for the wide variety of issues and genres he approached throughout his career as a public figure. At the same time, these pieces comprise a multiple repertory that places Groussac’s discourse within a specificity framework, while it also enables readers to take stock of the shared issues of concern in the intellectual atmosphere that surrounded him.

Between April and September, 1933, Argentine poet, writer, and journalist Raúl González Tuñón edited a magazine called Contra. La revista de los francotiradores. It was a highly innovative publishing experience, since there had been no previous attempts at launching a collective aesthetic-political program seeking to link the political vanguard with an aesthetic avant-garde. Reading the articles published in Contra magazine over those crucial times for ideological debate means discovering the arena where avant-garde artists from Argentina and Latin America joined social scientists and reformists to discuss aesthetic responses to the issues raised by political intervention. In their public statements, testimonies, poems, short-stories, and narratives, which resorted to experimental literary forms, these artists managed to renew the topics that had been exhausted by social art.

Juan Agustín García (18621923) was a lawyer, judge, university professor, and writer who lived in Buenos Aires and left a unique legacy. A witness to the rapid transformations that took place in Argentina at the turn of the 19th Century, he portrayed them (in his excellent prose) from a disenchanted, yet intelligent and insightful perspective, with a hint of irony and false naiveté. His portrayals took different shapes, from essays, historical novels and plays to university courses and newspaper articles. As he was not really given to undertaking long, systematic efforts, his works are scattered in a number of drafts and notes that have been later compiled into books. Just a few exceptions stand out as complete pieces, including La ciudad indiana (1900), his most renowned work, which provides a picture of social life in the colonial period, in the quest for long-term keys that may contribute to a better understanding of Argentine history. 54 | la ideología argentina

Alejandro Blanco isbn 987-558-099-6 2006 | 376 pp. | 560 g $ 40 | usd 10,68

Gino Germani was a member of that new generation of sociologists who gave rise to a broad turnaround in Latin American social science in mid-20th Century. He actually had a strategic role in that process, as he edited one of the main book series on social sciences over those years, while he also created the first Sociology Department in Argentina’s higher education system. Thus, in his effort to turn around that discipline, he transformed its intellectual and organizational culture. At the theoretical level, he produced one of the most creative syntheses in social theory, combining empirical contributions from the American tradition with the “one big theory” approach from the European tradition. However, his project for modern social science is still stereotypically portrayed as either a simple introduction of modern methods and techniques for social research, or an intellectual shift towards an alternative academic genre that departs from traditional essays.

Crisis magazine was first published in Buenos Aires in May 1973, and it was discontinued in March 1976, after the military coup in Argentina. For a period of forty months, it was issued on a monthly basis. This anthology provides a selection of its main topics and positions. It has been divided into three sections: “Historical Readings” (featuring interviews, testimonies, and reports for historiography review), “Communication and Culture: Redefining Symbolic Hierarchies” (featuring essays, research papers, and articles on cultural production conditions), and “Models and Portrayals” (featuring interviews with and biographical sketches of some significant figures for the political-cultural intervention sought by the magazine).

Expedition narratives portray an experience of the border that may cover the whole 19th Century and before. This collection gathers a specific number of samples from such vast genre: those narratives that describe expeditions in the military campaign aimed at conquering the Patagonia region in 1879. As this book shows, the so-called Conquest of the Desert was not only part of a war, but it was also part of a broader nation-building plan which involved distributing the excluded, granting land to major landowners, and setting the borders of the Pampas. Pursuing a territorial dream, Argentina sought to project itself towards the world and the future.

In the 1960s, a whole generation of Latin American youth got involved in politics through a heroic vision of political activism which coexisted with new cultural standards coming from Europe and the us. This paper addresses the impact of those ideas and those global cultural practices on political identity formation at the local level, especially on the 1968 Uruguayan student movement and its debate on “revolutionary paths” and the conditions for revolutionary struggle.

How is an industrial landscape created? This book tells the story of the Riachuelo (Matanza River) as an urban landscape through material as diverse as its subject of study. The author discusses canalization projects; debates on port issues; immigrant settlement processes; the impact of surrounding slaughterhouses, metal factories, and power plants; transportation along and across the stream; and the Riachuelo as portrayed in literary works, architecture, and paintings. Indeed, art has condensed the meaning of this landscape in that corner of the river that bohemian artists used to call rive gauche, which has now turned into a typical postcard picture representing Buenos Aires.

Housing projects developed during President Perón’s first term in office and social programs introduced by the Eva Perón Foundation still linger in Argentina’s memory as symbols of government-driven social welfare. This book explores how those pictures, created by Peronism, have managed to remain in our minds, preserving their political strength. In addition, it addresses the representation of public works in architecture, public housing, and urban spaces in an effort to understand how such symbolic universe has been built and promoted.

This study challenges the traditional view of Buenos Aires in the mid-19th Century as a small city, almost a quaint village that only served as the stage for the dramatic events of the May Revolution. For the first time, the capital city of Argentina in that period is shown as a complex urban geometrical structure whose presence is noticed both in the revolutionary elite’s discourse and in the sophisticated urban management processes adopted under President Rivadavia’s administration, which shape a picture of Buenos Aires based on the typical late Enlightenment model for architecture: a regular city.

The most ambitious goal of this book is to explain how social theory of modernity is connected with the construction and experience of the modern metropolis. Drawing on a wide array of contrasting dimensions in urban experience, David Frisby discusses the city as an observed, detected, interpreted, compared, designed, dissolved, and rationalized subject. Thus, he examines Benjamin’s account of the flaneur, the detective’s representation and vision of the city in archive material from the legendary Pinkerton National Detective Agency; Simmel’s interpretation of Berlin; Werner Sombart’s contrasting views of cultural Vienna and Americanized Berlin; Otto Wagner’s design work for a New Vienna and Martin Wagner’s plans for a New Berlin; and the points of contact between Expressionism and social theory in their outlook on cities.

Is it possible to draw a picture of the 20th Century and our times without cars? Ever since it started to roll around Europe in the late-19th Century, the automobile has traveled the world, it has conquered most cities, and it has become an essential part of our daily lives. This book examines the rise of automobility as a key element in the emergence of kinetic modernity between 1900 and 1940. The automobile has had an enormous impact on industrial work organization, as well as social and urban life patterns. As a powerful epitome of the 20th Century, it has made a defining contribution to strengthening the widespread scientific and technological revolution still in course. It is for those reasons that the car has inflamed the imagination of 20th Century society.

Le Corbusier had a long, fruitful, and sometimes rough relationship with Argentina. Although this great architect is the main character here, this book is not a biography. Rather than narrating his experience or describing his disciples’ careers in Argentina, this volume focuses on a number of projects, works, and actions which have been determined by a sort of network created among them. Thus, La red austral can be read as a tale of spies, since all characters know each other, but they will never know everything about each other.

This book introduces an insightful study on the history of Inventionism as a radical engine for architecture and industrial design in a territory where it was not originally born: Chile in the 1950s and 60s. For the first time, the author explores the influence of Argentine interventionist art on the School of Architecture at Valparaíso and on Gui Bonsiepe’s Design Group, two experiences that coexisted in the late 60s and early 70s.

This volume compiles two previously unavailable works by Bernardo Canal Feijóo (Santiago del Estero, 1897 - Buenos Aires, 1982): On Argentina’s Mediterranean Structure (1948) and Theory of the Argentine City (1951). What makes a difference in these works is that the author manages to adopt an off-center position facing master narratives of national culture. It is from this position that he reaches a clear understanding of historical and cultural reasons for an imbalanced development of Argentine territory towards coastal areas, as he explains the need to do so in the early years of national formation.

This book seeks to introduce the principles, processes, and elements that are present in sound perception from an acoustic science perspective. It has been designed as part of a broader program on acoustics for musicians and researchers. The subject of study for traditional psychoacoustics is the relationship between acoustic input signals and resulting sounds, but it never sheds light on the processes that lead to such results. On the other hand, neurobiology and the physiology of perception are especially interested in the transduction processes that serve as interface between acoustic signals and associated mental representations. In this case, the authors have mostly adopted the first approach, even though physiological features are described when deemed necessary.

This book explores virtual environment education, research, and production perspectives in the framework of the huge interactive possibilities available for IT users nowadays, focusing on sound and audiovisual applications. It spawns from research conducted by the author and her team under a project that aims at creating a research and learning system for organizational virtual environments. Such project simultaneously addresses three issues: higher education research, learning, and production in virtual environments; interactive features in dynamic hypermedia systems; and relationships among actors in a context-aware hypermedia system.

This book discusses the current state of the art in sound and music spatiality. Given the extensive nature of the issue and its many ramifications in several disciplines –such as acoustics, psychoacoustics, audio perception, audio technology, sound art, and music– it has been essential to establish a set of approaches that would ensure full, systematic coverage. Therefore, the book is divided into three sets of chapters. Firstly, it features a number of articles dealing with spatial audition. Secondly, it presents a series of chapters addressing technologies for simulation and implementation of spatial sound. And last, it introduces a set of writings that discuss spatiality in sound and music production, considering music creation, evaluation, and analysis from aesthetic and technical viewpoints.

The impact of yeast on human life dates back to the earliest years of our species. Due to its special ability to carry out fermentation, yeast was haphazardly used in the Ancient World to produce alcoholic drinks and bread. Later, more sophisticated techniques were developed for the same purposes. Today, it is also used to improve quality, taste, texture, appearance, and stability in perishable food production. Indeed, yeast never ceases to astound us in its potential to offer new food products with outstanding properties. The aim of this book is to reveal new opportunities arising from the use of yeast in food science and technology.

What are we talking about when we talk about biotechnology in Argentina? The answer is that we mostly talk about molecular biology, rather than products, engineering, markets, product development, patents, stock, or equity. Technology has an increasingly strong impact on society as a whole. Some technological developments, such as IT, reach our own lives and homes immediately, catching everyone’s attention, but few notice that there are also breakthroughs taking place in the so-called “life sciences”. When we talk about biotechnology, we must refer to bioproducts and bioprocesses in general, such as isolation, fermentation, animal and plant cell cultures, gene testing, and enzyme immunoassays. Biotechnology is actually giving rise to new industries, products, plants, animals, biomaterials, and disciplines.

This book seeks to introduce the principles of human nutrition and metabolism for a better understanding of those processes which involve nutrients in the human diet. It is intended for food science and technology students and professionals. It presents an innovative analysis of bioenergetic principles, as well as the metabolic/nutritional role of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. The authors thoroughly address such processes as digestion, absorption, and assimilation, enabling readers to understand which factors influence nutritional quality.

Elizabeth Lewkowicz (ed.) The ever-increasing need to use innovative, clean processes in the manufacturing industry and the rising demand for new products has led to growing development of biocatalysts and enzyme technology to complement or replace traditional industrial processes in an effort to foster sustainability. White biotechnology encompasses the use of natural biocatalysts, such as cells and enzymes, to protect the environment through biotechnological industrial processes. Current strategies to find new, eco-friendly chemoenzymatic approaches and to use state-of-the-art molecular biology and protein engineering applications play a major role in the quest for more effective biocatalysts. The articles in this book have been written by academic experts on the issue, who describe the essential steps for biocatalyst development, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of biocatalysis research.

An Essay Concerning Civil Government is one of the two treatises where John Locke (1632-1704) discusses government power and subject counterpower. Published in 1690, after Locke’s return from his retirement in the Netherlands, this work, which took him over 10 years to finish, will take readers to the turbulent times of Stuart England, when Parliament was at war with the King, the struggle between Whigs and Tories was at its height, the Exclusion Crisis had led to the Glorious Revolution, the Poor Laws and the Settlement Act had been enacted, and Puritans were leaving for New England, their promised land in the Americas.

A lot has been said about John Rawls. Above all, he is said to have revitalized the study of normative political philosophy, which, in Isaiah Berlin’s words, was moribund after five decades of lethal analytic meta-ethics, diluted in pseudo-issues on substantive questions regarding the just society and the good society, lost in a linguistic spiral. This revival, which has brought back ancient vitality into the academic world, has also triggered a boom of readings, readers, and lecturers, enriching public debate through an inexhaustible stock of arguments, conjectures, and refutations. Is it possible to say something that has not already been said? The authors and editor seem to think it is: contemporary though he was, John Rawls’ work has been and will always be a timeless classic. Indeed, the title of this volume reflects such conviction: there is Rawlsian philosophy post Rawls.

The articles gathered in this volume are Norberto Bobbio’s main pieces on Italian fascism. They were written between 1964 and 1975, but it was not until the 1990s that their author decided to include them in two different publications. They clearly reveal Bobbio’s analytic approach, which aims at reconstructing the concept of “fascism” on the basis of the oppositions it is involved in within a political theory framework, while it also provides an historical study of the process that led to the emergence of fascism as a political regime, i.e., its actual institutional embodiment. In addition, some of his writings also show a picture of life and ideas during two decades of Italian fascism, as seen through the eyes of a contemporary.

Quentin Skinner examines Thomas Hobbes’ poignant intervention strategies in his strong defense of royal authority for an ideological debate that surrounds the English Civil War (1642-1649), as belligerent as the actual battles in the military arena. The author’s analysis revolves around a controversy between two rival theories about the nature of liberty: one which, in Pettit’s traditional conception, defines freedom as the “absence of relations of domination” and draws an opposition between liberi homines and slaves; and one which, initially shaped under Hobbes’ mechanistic patterns and later reshaped under liberal thought, defines liberty as Isaiah Berlin’s “absence of interference”. Cogent and accessible, this book by Professor Skinner reveals a complex interlocutionary situation which includes such previously disparate pieces as The Elements of Law, De cive, Leviathan, and Behemoth.

Implementing this project has involved greatly modulating concepts and approaches regarding the performing body, which has been conceived of as the main scenario for vocality and its origin, a major territory for this roadmap to drama and performer training. The author explores Western vocal styles and their connection with power relations and technology development, while she addresses some prevailing notions in contemporary drama, and she discusses the opinions of highly influential artists and scholars on late 20th Century drama. These contributions are combined with some present trends of thought in an attempt to ask new questions and shed some different light on old ones.

This book provides an introduction to both John Maynard Keynes’ General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money and Post Keynesian thought, while it offers an in-depth analysis of major differences between Keynesianism and Marxist theory. It also discusses current interpretation of Keynes’ ideas as shown in handbooks and undergraduate courses on macroeconomics.

This book gathers 12 short stories which have been carefully selected from over 500 small pocket-sized volumes that comprised a popular fiction series called La Novela Semanal, published in Buenos Aires from 1917 to 1927. The selected stories reveal a wide array of issues and genres, such as immigration, life in Patagonian lands, science fiction narrative, historical novel, and romance fiction.

Curious readers may walk into these pages uninvited if they intend to rethink our times through their density, their paths and narratives. New readings are suggested on the basis of cultural patterns, openly introducing different issues, crossings, redefinitions, and points of contact. Thus, readers will be left without chronologies, logics, or safety nets, facing an appealing night map of questions. This is the road we have chosen to introduce some critical reflections on politicalness and communication in Latin America’s symbolic territories.

The theory of dependence has become a major intellectual and political movement in the last five decades. Its basic categories and principles remain alive in a high number of critical essays nowadays. However, there is widespread consensus on the fact that dependence thought has entered an “impasse”. This book comprises three sections. Section number one discusses theoretical issues, focusing mainly on writings by Ruy Mauro Marini and Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Section number two addresses the connection between currency exchange rates and underdeveloped economies. And section number three analyzes agricultural income on the basis of Argentina’s soy and grain industries.

¿Qué fue del buen samaritano? Naciones ricas, políticas pobres Original title: Bad Samaritans Ha-Joon Chang Translated into Spanish by Jordi Vidal Published jointly by unq-AEDA ISBN 978-987-558-179-1 | 2009 | 296 p. | paperback | 15 x 21.5 cm | 420 g $ 70 | usd 18,69

In this book, renowned Korean economist Ha-Joon Chang explains how some institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization, governed by the world’s wealthiest countries, are actually being “bad samaritans”, dictating a route of neoliberalism and liberalization to the world’s poorer nations, while in fact those powerful nations themselves have reached economic success and development on the basis of protectionist strategies and mixed-economy theories. How can these bad samaritans be discouraged from inflicting this kind of harm on poorer nations, whatever their intentions? What else should they do? This rigorous, cogent, accessible study provides some answers through a combination of history, current world analysis, some forecasts, and suggestions for change.

Now the journal’s second series, edited by Carlos Hugo Fidel, has sought to preserve the same purpose as the first one, i.e., to introduce a comprehensive discussion on current issues in social science, holding an interdisciplinary perspective that fosters critical thinking through healthy debate and confrontation among different approaches and positions for the sake of social science development.

Noé Jitrik One of Argentina’s foremost literary critics, his writings are peaceful, shy, and ironic, while they also catch the eye of the reader.

Luis Felipe Noé One of Argentina’s greatest 20th-Century visual artists, his paintings are violent, overwhelming, caustic, while they overflow their canvass and disturb the eye of the beholder.

En el nombre de Noé [In the Name of Noé] Noé Jitrik Luis Felipe Noé isbn 978-987-558-166-1 2009 | 88 p. | color illus. | 530 g | paperback | 26 x 26 cm $ 100 | usd 26,70

The texts and illustrations comprised in this book are the result of a friendly, random fact: Noé Jitrik and Luis Felipe Noé share three letters, which at the same time joins them and makes them different (as in the former they make up a first name, and in the latter, a last name). When they realized that fact, it led them to a new venture: Noé Jitrik would write something inspired in that name, while Luis Felipe Noé would in turn paint a series inspired by those writings. The result was an exhibition, which later turned into a book gathering their imaginations, a book that can be read and observed, a book that expresses both the original idea and the authors’ creative, delirious freedom.
