WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS We were recently asked about infant baptism due to the statement that we inherit Adam’s sin at birth, ie, we are born in a state of sin. If this were true, then Christ would have been born as a sinner, for he was flesh just as we are. But we are told that Christ had no sin (Hebrews 4: 15). Babies and little children do not have the capacity to fully know right from wrong. Perhaps we should read Ezekiel Chapter 18. Here are verses 19-24 for your consideration. Yet you say, why should the son not bear the guilt of the father? Because the son has done what is lawful and right, and has kept all My statutes and observed them, he shall surely live. The soul who sins shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. But if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has com mitted, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; be cause of the righteousness which he had done, he shall live. “Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die”? says the Lord God, “Not that he should turn from his ways and live”. “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All the righteousness he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithful ness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die”. Because of Adam’s sin, God said he had come from dust, and to dust he would return (Genesis 3: 19). Thus physical death came to all men. Because of Adam’s sin, God said ‘behold the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil” Genesis 3:22. Thus, even without specific commands, there are moral laws that man is aware of. When he breaks these laws, he sins. Long before Law was given to Moses, the Bible tells us “then the Lord God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually”. Genesis 6: 5. Humans were guilty of sin.

Sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:1-2) .... but this is because of our individual sins ..... not because we inherit someone else’s sin. Living or dying because of our sin is not referring to physical death, but it is spiritual death .... separation from God. If we die in this state, we will be separated from God forever.
