The Many Holidays of November By: Brandon Cox November is a month full of holidays. Some of them, like Hanukkah, Islamic New Year, or Remembrance Day, or insanely popular. Some holidays... are not. I'm going to let you know about some of my favourite, smaller holidays that not everybody knows about. Food is important. Food is what keeps the body going throughout the day and what better food is there than the sandwich? That's right, Sandwich Day is a thing, and it occurs on November 3rd! Legend has it that John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was playing cribbage one day when he was struck with a deadly case of hunger! The 18th century aristocrat ordered his valet to bring him his lunchmeat, but folded betwixt two pieces of bread to prevent the grease from making the cards in his game slippery! Others at his cribbage game found the idea quite handy, and began to order the "Sandwich" meal. Before you know it, the sandwich became a popular food item and a staple part of many a person's menu!

On the 13th of November, 1998, World Kindness Day was introduced to the world as a part of the World Kindness Movement. From Canada, to Japan, to Nigeria to many different countries all around the world, people come together and celebrate the human spirit. Just being nice to someone isn't that crazy, but you're welcome to make the holiday as crazy as possible! Sing and dance in a giant flash mob in the middle of the UC! Run up to a stranger and thank them for being a wonderful human being! Volunteer at a homeless shelter! Whatever you do, have fun with it and remember that being kind to one another is never a bad thing.

In the fall of 1973, the Yom Kippur War (sometimes called the Ramadan War or t he October War) was led by Arabian states (headed by Egypt and Syria) against Israel from October 6th to October 25th. In response to this, World Hello Day was created on November 21st. The objective of this holiday was to go out, meet new people, and say hello to ten different individual during the day. World Hello Day encourages peaceful communication to join the world together, instead of the armed conflict which keeps us apart. So, on November 21st, celebrate the 40th annual World Hello Day by greeting 10 individuals with a friendly "Hello"!

Be it Sandwich Day, World Kindness Day, or World Hello Day, or one of the larger holidays, celebrate November with enthusiasm and have a great month!

NOVEMBER a month of hot chocolate, the first sign of snow, cold temperatures and… moustaches? Movember is not just a competition between beard and moustache growers. An official charity, Movember is meant to have a lasting impact on men’s health. For the month of November, many men (and women!) grow facial hair all around the world. The main reason for this unruly state is to create awareness about prostate and testicular cancer in men, as well as other mental challenges they face. Vital funds are then raised in order to combat these problems. Directed by the Movember Foundation, the program focuses on living with and beyond cancer and mental illness, educating the world, and researching in order to have a positive impression on the face of men’s health throughout the world. HOW IT ALL GOES DOWN: For the 30 days of November, men are encouraged to join in and grow a moustache. After registering on Movember.com these men, termed “Mo Bros”, start the month completely clean shaven. Within days, these men must grow and groom their wild mos. Through friends and family, who donate to their efforts (it’s a lot of work keeping a crazy moustache under control!), these men become mobile publications, acting as walking and talking billboards in order to heighten awareness and promote more conversation about men’s health issues. Beginning in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has become a movement around the world. Movember has inspired more than 3 million people, across 21 countries, to take part in its activities. In 2012, over 1.1 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas joined the movement and raised approximately $146.6 million in Canadian dollars. From Moscow to Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town to Alaska, Movember is a celebratory time of the year – celebratory because of what we, as average citizens, can achieve simply by growing a moustache. Marathon of Sport: a day of fun competition for Special Olympics Canada The University of Guelph’s Human Kinetics Student Association is working with Motionball Canada, a national, non-profit organization, on an upcoming event called Marathon of Sport. Motionball Canada has dedicated over a decade towards raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics Canada. Currently, Special Olympics Canada has enriched the lives of more than 34, 000 children, youth and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in 17 various summer and winter sports throughout the year. On Saturday, November 16th from 2:00 – 5:00pm at the Gryphon Field House, over 100 students will participate in numerous sports and activities, such as soccer, relay races, spirit competitions and Kin Ball. Each group of 7 students will partner up with a Special Olympics athlete from the local community to compete in these activities. Students will receive a free t-shirt and the opportunity to win prizes and medals. The cost is $5 per person plus any additional fundraising the student pursues. All proceeds go to the Special Olympics Canada Foundation and Special Olympics Ontario. The goal of Marathon of Sport is not only for university students to donate to this amazing cause. It is also an opportunity for students to interact and compete with inspiring athletes and learn more about how meaningful Special Olympics Canada is to the community and the University of Guelph. If you are interested in participating in this event, or would like to learn more on how you can get involved with Special Olympics Canada, contact the HKSA at hksa@uoguelph.ca. The HKSA would like to thank Interhall Council for their support throughout the development of this event.

Antioxidants: What’s the real deal? Written by: Joy Mackay Antioxidants at a Glance Walking through the grocery store, you’ve probably seen labels boasting about antioxidants and their spectacular properties. Have you ever wondered what actually makes up antioxidants and why they’re apparently so good for you? Antioxidants are found in many different types of foods and have earned a reputation for having numerous healthy benefits. It has been claimed that antioxidants reduce the chances of cancer and act as a ‘fountain of youth,’ which keeps you looking younger longer. The U.S. National Library of Medicine defines antioxidants as: “Substances that may protect your cells against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food, or by environmental exposures like tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals can damage cells, and may play a role in heart disease, cancer, and other diseases” (www.nlm.nih.gov). Still confused? Dietitians have explained antioxidants in simpler terms: “Think of your body as a car. It can rust when metal in the car reacts with oxygen. If you cover it with a protective coating, it doesn’t rust as quickly. For the body, antioxidants are that protective coating. They protect your body’s cells from damage caused by pollutants, smoke, unhealthy diets and the normal aging process” (www.dietitians.ca). Antioxidant Rich Foods Here are some examples of antioxidants and some foods you can find them in: 

Beta-carotene: Orange foods (sweet potatoes, carrots, apricots etc.) some leafy green vegetables (spinach, kale etc.)

Lutein: Green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale etc.) *Lutein is associated with healthy eyes, so eat up!*

Lycopene: tomatoes, watermelon, guava, papaya etc.

Selenium: Rice, wheat, brazil nuts *Selenium is a mineral, not an antioxidant- but is a component of antioxidant enzymes*

Vitamin A: Liver, sweet potatoes, carrots, milk, mozzarella cheese

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): Many fruits and vegetables, cereals, beef, poultry, fish

Vitamin E: Almonds, wheat germ oil, soy bean oil, corn oil, mangos, nuts, broccoli etc. (www.cancer.gov) Overall, there are many nutritious foods that contain antioxidants!

Take Home Message: Antioxidants have many benefits in the body and fight on our body’s behalf to keep us healthy. It is important to get a variety of antioxidants in your diet because different antioxidants have different functions. Using Canada’s Food Guide as a guideline for healthy eating can help ensure you get a variety of nutritious and antioxidant rich foods every day! Happy eating!

Lest We Forget By: Brandon Cox

Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day, is observed on the 11 hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (also known as 11:00am on November 11th). It was created to remember the members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty. It is celebrated primarily in the Commonwealth countries (such as Australia, Canada, India, and South Africa), but the date has similar meanings in many nonCommonwealth countries such as Germany or Japan. th

The First World War, which formally began on the 28th of July, 1914, and ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on the 28th of June, 1919. On November 7, 1919, King George V of England formally declared a day November 11 th as a day of remembrance. Remembrance Day ceremonies are typically observed through the sounding of the "Last Post", followed by a period of silence. The "Last Post" call was used by the British Army camps, signalling the end of duty for an officer upon returning from their tour of the camp and its quarters. Every country, even every province, has a different way of paying their respects. In every Canadian territory and province except for Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday. In Canada, Remembrance day is stated to be a date in "remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace". At the National War Memorial in Ottawa, the Governor General of Canada presides over the official Remembrance ceremonies, including gun salutes, the national anthem, and the playing of military musical pieces. "In Flanders Fields" is a war poem written during the First World War by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae on May 3, 1915. The poem is famous, being the most popular and most quoted poem from the war. In Flanders Fields popularized the red poppy, a flower which grew over the graves of fallen soldiers in Flanders. It has been published numerous times, and has even been transcribed into choral songs. The red poppy has become a symbol of remembrance, and on November 11 th many people wear a form of artificial red poppy on their clothing to symbolize their remembrance. Remembrance Day is an important date on the Canadian calendar. It signifies not just our past members of the armed forces, but our present members and those of the future. It is a way of remembering what many have given up so that we can have what we have today. So, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we honour our national day of remebrance.

Remembrance Day In Flanders Fields

11 NOVEMBER

Poem by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, 3 May 1915 In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it tight If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

lest we forget.

Take a Day to Yourself Reward Yourself Getting overwhelmed with mid-terms and staying in your room for long numerous hours? Only time you get out is when you want to eat? Well how about taking some time off from studying and rewarding yourself to a trip to the mall. Grab some of your friends from your floor or even friends from your residence building or classes. Also hitting the mall by you is also not a very bad idea. Sometimes you need to be alone too, to give some relaxation time to yourself. Reward yourself by purchasing a new sweater or even the weather essentials such as a hat or mittens as those are a must! By going out to the mall, not only are you giving yourself some time to yourself, you are also giving yourself a great a study break. This is a great study break; as it gives you chance to get some fresh air which is also very important to active studying. Taking a trip also to Stone Road Mall gives you some physical activity as you are going to be sitting down couple of hours to study; you are able to walk around the mall to look around. You do not have to buy anything but going out and getting some fresh air is necessary. It is about balancing studying as well giving time to stay active. However you might also need to put a time frame on how long you can go as studying is very important and sticking to a certain routine. Do not however go a couple of hours before, or the night before. Use that extra time to study for course material. Going out to Stone Road Mall will also give you a chance to experience GUELPH’s mall which is only a five minute bus route. Bus 50 express leaves you right outside the mall, as it drops you back to the University Centre. Go out and spend time on yourself. Give yourself a break.

WHY NOT GO TO GRYPHS!? In first year, it is a tradition to go to all the places on campus, as first year is all about getting to know your campus as well as trying different food from various different places on campus. Gryphs is located on top of Ice-Rank, and is open all the time for students. This is a traditional place as a Guelph Gryphon will go to try great Guelph’s speciality foods. It’s an amazing place to get the best burgers on campus! Gryphs is a great place to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, as well as catch up with your friends. The best part is that, the food there is amazing and always leaves students with a positive experience that tends to bring students back all the time. It’s ranked number 2 in favourite places to eat for first years. It provides great quality food for students. The best part of Gryphs is that it accepts a meal card which uses your flex dollars. It’s also a great place to watch the latest sport games as there are several TV screens around the restaurant. As it is located above the ice, you can always catch an intramural hockey as well as see the Guelph Storm practise! Go out and try something new on the menu, as it is on campus!

What is fun? School? Fun? Most people tend not to associate the two… BUT they can! School its self can be fun if you want it to be and if you are interested in it. Time management can also make things a bit more fun when you actually have the time. You won’t be stressing over the paper that is due at midnight and you can have fun with your friends instead. Not only those things though, there is always the life outside of your classes that you have which can make a huge difference to the experience that you have at university. Having fun with your friends could include a night out with your floor or tower and even just your other friends. Something like East Side Mario’s on stone road, or The Works downtown. There are tones of places on and off campus to have fun with your friends and to catch up after the midterms you just wrote where you might not have seen each other in a while. This is the perfect place to catch up and grab a bite to eat. So many places also accept your student card as payment for your meal! You can find all the places that accept your meal card on the hospitality website under dining facilities and click off campus dining.

EXPLORE We have all heard about going out with your friend for a fun night out, however there is always the choice to have a day out to explore the town a little bit more. In my first year I didn’t go exploring at all. I learned about down town and the things around the university and that was it. I found that I missed out on a lot of things because I was too scared or just too lazy to venture to the other side of town with my friends. There is more to Guelph than what you see around the university.

This is your challenge: Find a group of friends, find the following places, and then discover them. • The farmers Market (Held Every Weekend). • Find the Emergency Pole in the Arboretum. • Sleeman Center (and why not stay for a hockey game). • Glow in the Dark Mini Golf. • The Nutty Chocolateir.

Not only do you familiarize yourself with the town you also learn About our bus system and how to get around. Worst comes to worst, you cab back to your residence after having a great day with your friends

Whats in the movies? -Dom and Sara Thor: The Dark World : November 8th 2013 Category: Action Summary: Thor returns for the hammer blasting second installment of this high action Marvel film. Played by Chris Hemsworth, Thor returns for yet again another epic battle with the earth swallowing Loki (Thor’s brother). With the threat of “your world will be extinguished” Thor must face his inner demons to complete the challenges presented. Our Reviews: Domenic- I am personally a bit sick of the comic book/Marvel movie scene that is dominating the movie industry. I enjoyed them a lot as a youth but they are all getting a bit repetitive. I know I might be massacred for not appreciating the cinematic beauty of this movie. I have personally not seen the first so I guess I am not the one to judge. Sara- I am definitely not over these movies. I have loved Thor since before there were movies and I’m not going to stop any time soon. With that in mind OMGGGG THIS MOVIE LOOKS SO AMAZING! By the trailer it’s looking like Thor and Loki are going to be besties again which I’m totally okay with. BROTP!!! I’m really really excited to see this movie. And I’m making Dom come with me. YOLOSWAG.

Although I do have very high hopes for this film I will have to be the judge for myself. I am truly excited! Sara- I’ve never read this book before, but it sounds really good. It looks like this movie is going to be super adorable, but also sad at the same time.

Go see it to find out if “The Girl on Fire” survives the wrath of Pan-Am. Our Reviews: Domenic- Her I go on a fangirl tangent. I am absolutely in love with the Hunger Games. As of reading the series multiple times I am quite excited to see the next addition to the trilogy. Even though I know the plot line I am still very excited to see how the director does this movie and if it does this amazing book justice. Sara- I’m so excited to see this movie!!! I absolutely love the Hunger Games so much. It took me less than two days to read the series and I’m so excited to see this movie too because the first one was amazing. Also Peeta looks like a baby puppy sitting in the rain and it’s so precious. I’m also excited to see what Finnick looks like because for some reason when I read the books I pictured him looking like Mermaid Man. But apparently he’s not old. I don’t know where I came up with that idea but I’m excited to see what he actually looks like.

Frozen : November 29th, 2013 Category: Family Movie! Summary: This new addition to the Disney movie family is sure to be a crowd pleaser. On the way Anna and Kristoff meet up with cheery snowman, Olaf*. This family holiday movie is sure to make anyones heart melt. “Some people are worth melting for.”

Our Reviews: Domenic- Disney movies have always been some of my favorites. I am very excited to see this film. Disney movies always make me feel like a kid again and I love that magical feeling you get when you watch a Disney masterpiece. I am very excited to see this movie when I return home for the holidays. Date night with Mom! Sara- EEEEEEEEEEE!!!! I DON’T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I WAS THIS EXCITED TO SEE ANYTHING. It looks so freaking cute I think I’m going to die. I don’t know what it is about Kristoff but I love him already. He’s just so adorable like a giant teddy bear. I just want to find him and give him a big squish hug and braid flowers into his hair. This movie actually looks so adorable I’m so excited for all the new songs I can listen to on repeat! And on top of that the way that Elsa does the thing with the snow is actually really cool looking. Like when she gets the ice crystals going on. I’m super excited for this movie.

Our Reviews: Domenic: As The Hobbit being one of the first books over 200 pages that I read as a child! When I found out that they were making this novel into a movie I became very excited! I really enjoyed the first film and I hope this one meets up with the last. Sara: I read The Hobbit when I was 5 years old and since then it has been one of my favorite books of all time. AND LEGOLAS IS IN THIS MOVIE WHICH IS THE BEST THING IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. I have always known that Legolas was perfect but every time I see him he just gets more and more perfect. I have had a mega crush on Legolas since I was 6 and the fact that he’s absolutely beautiful doesn’t help. He’s actually perfect I’m 900% sure. Also Smaug is in this one which is going to be super awesome because Smaug is the coolest cat. OMG I JUST REALLY WANT TO WATCH THIS MOVIE RIGHT NOW #DYING.
