Curb Appeal Made Easy

P

This gorgeous country home features urethane columns, millwork and shutters by Fypon®.

Protecting and dressing up your home’s exterior has gotten a lot easier and more affordable thanks to new technology in home building products. Years ago you were limited to mostly exterior wood products, which had relatively short life spans and required plenty of maintenance. Today you’ll find innovative, durable, efficient and stylish exterior products made synthetics products that come with great warranties and are constructed to withstand the elements. Products like polymer slate and shake roofing tiles, fiberglass doors, vinyl and fiberglass windows, urethane millwork and fiber-cement siding are great examples of products designed for low-maintenance and lasting beauty. When it comes to choosing windows, homeowners are not only looking for energy efficiency (fiberglass and vinyl offer maximum efficiency and low maintenance), but they also want as many window options as they can find like custom glass and custom configurations and sizes. People want to set their home apart from their neighbors, so they’re accenting their windows with accessories like grilles, blinds, shades or decorative panels between glass and decorative hardware to coordinate their home’s interior design. Since windows and doors are seen and enjoyed from both inside and outside your home, it is worth the time to choose your windows

While all areas of a home’s exterior are subject to abuse from severe weather and harmful ultraviolet rays, your roof and facade are easily subjected to the elements. Products like polymer roofing tiles, steel shingles, concrete tile and composite slate are all good environmental choices and are guaranteed to last for decades. Choose your siding carefully to ensure it complements your home’s architectural style. Composite siding is a favorite because it mimics the look of real wood and stucco (of course some manufacturers are better at it than others). Additional green options include faux wood, stucco, stone, brick, vinyl siding and Western Red Cedar. Remember, doing the research up front to find the highest quality products for your budget will result in long-term savings and lasting curb appeal.

Commandments of Home Design By Christine Cooney

From space-saving designs to the latest in luxury accents these design tips are made with you and your dream home in mind

1 1 2 3 4 5

DISCOVER WHAT INSPIRES YOU

The decorative accents you select for your home should be functional and inspirational. When looking for these special items, don’t select something that you truly don’t like just because it suits your room or budget. If you can’t afford to purchase the items that you really want right now, then be patient and wait until you have the money to spend. Leaving your walls bare or rooms sparse for a little while will be worth the wait to create the perfect room.. HAVE A WELL THOUGHT OUT PLAN Be sure that you have a well thought out plan before you start designing any room. Put together a list of “must haves” and “would like to have” items so you will stay focused with your project. In the end you will have designed a functional and enjoyable room. DON’T SKIMP ON QUALITY PRODUCTS That old saying “you get what you pay for” couldn’t be truer when it comes to products for your home. With so many discount retailers available, you need to be a smart shopper. Just because it looks good, doesn’t mean it is a quality product. Buy brands that you know and trust, especially when it comes to appliances. You may pay a little more initially, but you’ll have a product that will last a long time. COLOR YOUR HOME BEAUTIFUL Color is everywhere, which is why it is one of the most important decorating decisions you’ll make in your home. Inside your home, selecting a color scheme not only is a reflection of your personality, but it will help you achieve a successful décor.

We no longer need to restrict ourselves to a particular design style. Today’s design is all about bringing together a variety of elements and colors that inspire you. Maybe you’re traditional, but are inspired by a sleek-lined contemporary faucet for your kitchen or master bath. Don’t be afraid to mix-and- match different styles to create a custom look that you’ll enjoy.

While the main focus when decorating a room is the floor and four walls, it’s important not to forget your ceiling, which can add dimension and character to your home. Thanks to new materials such as faux wood, urethane millwork and PVC trim, which are eco-friendly, affordable and versatile, you can dress up any room by adding faux beams and decorative moulding. For a more dramatic design try a dropped, coffered or tray ceiling. For a touch of elegance try a ceiling medallion with a chandelier. Insulation is Key Element to Your Home’s Efficiency

E

By Christine Cooney Energy efficient homes are composed of a network of elements working together to reduce the overall amount of energy consumption. A key ingredient to making your home more energy efficient is insulation. It keeps your home warm in the winter, cool in the summer and prevents air from escaping through your walls, floors, ceilings, foundation and ductwork to ensure maximum efficiency and comfort. You can greatly increase the energy efficiency and comfort of your new home by installing insulation with an R-value higher than the minimum requirements. But to truly enjoy the benefits of insulation, it must be installed correctly. Compressing it or leaving gaps through which air can flow can cut insulation’s effectiveness by as much as 50 percent. When insulating your attic, it’s important not to clog the attic vents under the eaves. Keep air circulating freely above the insulation by installing baffles, which is typically a piece of fiberglass batt placed several inches away from the vent. For fire safety, keep insulation clear of heat producing devices such as doorbell transformers and recessed lights, flues or vents from furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces and exhaust fans. Home insulation tends to be most effective in terms of cost savings in climates that have a wide range of annual average temperatures like the Northeast. In other words, you’ll see the most savings if you live somewhere with cold winters and hot summers as opposed to a climate with a minimal difference between average winter and summer temperatures.

Thermal insulation is specially designed to trap heat inside your house and makes the best option if you live in an area that has long, cold winters. In terms of

Her Dream Home

Designing and building an energy-efficient home that conforms to all the considerations and codes faced by homebuilders can be challenging, however any house style can be made to require relatively minimal amounts of energy to heat and cool, and be comfortable and healthy. By purchasing a green or ENERGY STAR® approved house plan (view the only exclusive collection of ENERGY STAR® designs) you can be assured that your home will be energy efficient and that your builder will have the tools and specific products to construct your home properly. Even though there are many different design options available, they all have several things in common – a high R-value, tightly sealed thermal envelope, controlled ventilation and lower than usual heating, cooling and electric bills.

Keep in mind that combining quality home insulation with energy efficient air conditioners and heaters is the best way to optimize your energy savings.

18

insulation materials, foam insulation and fiberglass insulation are among the most common, but you can also choose eco-friendly products made from recycled paper, plastics and natural oils.

Some home designs are more expensive to build than others, but none of them need to be extremely expensive to construct. Recent improvements in building products and construction techniques allow most modern energy saving ideas to be seamlessly integrated into any type of house design without sacrificing comfort, health or aesthetics.
