ABOUT BILLION KIDS CODE

BillionKidsCode HerComputing's flagship initiative, is on a mission to break down barriers in tech & computing through gamification and cross curricular learning. We’ve launched a board game for ages 10+ to make technology a space where everyone feels welcomed regardless of their field of study or background The board game Who Wants to Be a Billionaire, is designed, developed, and illustrated by Tanish and Riya Tyagi. It's an educational board game where players explore the world of tech & computing to discover 100+ concepts & careers as they build a billion dollar startup. The game is Kickstarter funded and has been played across numerous meets and tournaments in schools, libraries, & homes.

HerComputing is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing participation of girls & underrepresented students in computing. According to the National Science Foundation, the ratio of boys to girls in technology & computing fields is three to one, and African Americans and Hispanics make up less than 15%. In May 2019, Tanish Tyagi founded HerComputing to effect change. He believes that an early exposure to computer science and technology provides a foundation for continued interest In the last three plus years, HerComputing has hosted coding camps, hackathons, large scale community projects, and provided fun computer science curricula to educators and students globally.

HerComputing's annual week long Coding Camp, hosted in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, has consistently been the highest rated of all our events. 100% of the students said they'll recommend HerComputing to a friend and 94% said the projects and Gimkit tournaments to review concepts were fun! 63% of our students and 75% of our instructors were girls.

"Our annual coding camp held four years in a row has been the highest rated event and 100% students said they will recommend HerComputing to a friend!" 08

KEY INITIATIVE: CODING CAMPS

During the 5 Day long coding camps, we have taught Game Development, Web Development, Machine Learning, Robotics & Java Programming, and Competitive Programming. Most of the curricula and class videos from the four coding camps has been made available to educators and students outside of our camp via free downloads and YouTube. Our first prototype of the board game was created on a piece of paper while riding a train in the summer of 2019. Three years and eight prototypes later—developing, illustrating, testing & iterating, the board game was finally launched in May 2022. Our board game meets have been the second most attended events and had highly engaged students from all fields of study and background Using the QR Code available on the board game box, players can access resources on 100+ tech & computing concepts and careers (also used in the game). We have established partnership with schools, libraries, and CS Teachers Association to distribute board games and free resources to educators and students globally Computing & Billion

KEY INITIATIVE: BOARD GAME

In partnership with Valley Settlement House and a team of 15 volunteers, we refurbished computer lab at the after school program and introduced students to web development. We also developed and launched a web platform that enables inclusive recognition for youth and adults who're creating social impact through extraordinary service.

Platform for Millburn township is live: https://millburntwpcommunityservice com Through the platform, local government at township and county levels can receive nominations from residents, review the nominations and select winners via Admin functionality, and publish winners to the public for recognition through the click of a button. The app can also be used by nonprofits and school districts to improve community engagement and inspire social change. support projects, specially Eagle Scout projects, in a multitude of ways including providing volunteers, sponsorship, and CS curriculum."

Curricula and content: add more gamification and interesting projects to courses. Take Educator feedback on open source curricula to capture adoption, utilization, & satisfaction

WHAT CAN BE DONE BETTER

Using data from student feedback forms, parents and volunteers feedback, and social media analytics, we gained insights on what we did well and must continue doing, and what we can improve. The following sections capture our findings: Digital engagement: website for HerComputing had the most visits at crica 21000, followed by website of BillionKidsCode at 8200, and download of Free Resource at 300+. Continue with call to action messaging on websites and search engine optimization Board game meets: these have been very well received across ages and background of students. Having an experienced gamer serve as coach for each game table has worked well for student experience. Need to continue training more volunteer coaches

Customer (student)-centric: seeking their inputs before, during, and after each class with the goal to ensure students stay on track and are having fun interesting projects, Gmikit tournaments for review of concepts, others. Having students submit the feedback form in real time five minutes before the end of session has resulted in 80% take rate Global attendance with virtual events: since 2020, we've been able to significantly extend our reach for students through 20+ FB groups, resulting in attendees from multiple countries and time zones

REFLECTIONS: WHAT WENT WELL

Her Computing & Billion Kids Code Impact Report '22

Social Media: do not spread thin with too many social media platforms. Between Instagram, FB, Tiktok, Twitter, LinkedIn, Nextdoor, YouTube; need to pick 2 and build content & partnerships accordingly. Also, need to post consistently with interesting content to build the audience Marketing: start advertising for events sooner. Create a 2 pager for strategy Logistics: We had to cancel events twice due to unavailability of space at the last minute. Appoint a Director of Logistics

CLOSING

We want to increase our outreach globally through social media. Two areas we want to focus on are: parent awareness for tech & computing fields and getting students excited about it.

We aim to distribute 200 300 board games to schools and libraries through partnerships with global nonprofits as as well as through direct outreach. Additionally we'll host board game meets and educator training. We also plan to make the game available via Amazon.com.

Her Computing & Billion Kids Code Impact Report '22

We want to empower other students and educators to host 5 Day coding camps and/or workshops within their community.

EXPANDING OUR CODING CAMP INITIATIVE 02

Working on HerComputing and BillionKidsCode for the last three plus years has been a transformational experience for me. I get to work with my brilliant and compassionate sister, Riya, and an equally talented team of volunteers and advisors. While they are the reason for all we have been able to accomplish, what keeps me in the game are the amazing students I teach and learn from. I always look forward to hosting the events and working with them. I'm excited about the work we will do together in the coming year!
