SAFE WATERLINES
IF YOU DON’T TEST HOW DO YOU KNOW?
There are many risks associated with biofilm formation and contaminated water, in the context of dental unit waterlines the best way to determine if your water is SAFE is to complete a water dip slide test.
Dentisan have a very effective testing water dip slide test by where the result is ready within 72 hours! It uses a clear red dot spot system: 1 or more you’re good to go 2 or more than a shock treatment needs to be performed as this is an indication of biofilm formation.
Written in the ADA Guidelines for Infection Control Third Edition (page 14 section 2. Waterlines and water quality) are the guidance around waterline compliance and what CFU/ml needs to be followed for patient water supply: The number of bacteria in water used as a coolant/irrigant for non-surgical dental procedures should be less than 500 CFU/mL, since this is a widely used international limit for safe drinking water.9
When treating immunocompromised patients, it is recommended that water from dental unit waterlines contain less than 200 CFU/mL. Bacterial levels can be tested using commercially available test strips or through commercial microbiology laboratories.

The Dentisan dip slides can be used to test the dental chair water supply, the input water quality to the building and even the patient water drinking fountain. After all, wouldn’t you want to ensure safe water throughout the whole work place?
