The Henry County Intergovernmental Retreat…A Great Idea Inviting all of the members of the County Commission, the Mayor and Council Members of all of the cities in the county, and the members of all of the County Authorities, to a two day offsite retreat on an annual basis was a great idea. The elected and appointed officials could get to know each other better, and together, could, with the help of a professional facilitator, work to identify challenges and opportunities for Henry County – and strategies to address them. Turning Your Hobby Into Your Business by Cheryl Greenerl, Program Coordinator, UGA SBDC at Clayton State University

Every month, I speak to several people who want to turn their hobby into a business. Whether it’s baking, scrapbooking, or collecting antique toys, they do it because they love it. After all, having passion for what you do is a key element needed to run a successful small business. But the love of your craft alone, is not enough to convert that pastime into a profitable enterprise; you must know how to run a business. Here are 6 things that will help you to succeed: 1. First, you need to write a comprehensive business plan to serve as your roadmap for implementing and growing your business. You’ll probably have to revise it along the way but you need something to guide you as you move from hobbyist to entrepreneur. 2. You must be able to show that your hobby is marketable. Just because you, your family, and a few close friends like what you make, doesn’t mean that there is a demand for it. It’s essential to demonstrate that enough people will buy what you’re selling at your price in order to make a profit. Otherwise, you may find that all you have is an out of control hobby that leaves you broke and frustrated. 3. Another key step is to research the competition. Ensure that there are

enough customers to sustain an additional player in the market. Then, find a way to stand out from the crowd. Show your customers what makes you different from everyone else. 4. Find reliable suppliers and negotiate the best price possible. This is key to controlling your costs and maintaining a steady source of materials. 5. Deliver a quality product and provide excellent customer service. Happy customers will tell other people about your company and send them your way. 6. Since this is now your business, treat it accordingly. Be prepared to work long hours in order to grow your business. Stay on top of emerging trends and consumer demand. Research the industry; learn about sales and marketing. Finally, don’t overlook the latest techniques and processes for creating your product or delivering your service. For assistance in growing your business, contact the UGA Small Business Development Center at Clayton State University (SBDC) at morrow@georgiasbdc.org or call 678 466-5100.

Leadership Henry Graduates Class of 2016-2017 The Leadership Henry Class of 2016-2017 graduated during a ceremony in May held at Eagle’s Brooke Country Club in Locust Grove. The 28 class members completed a ten month leadership training program that provided participants with an understanding of our county’s history, diversity, government, economy, education, human services and healthcare. Each month, they visited sites throughout the community, met with local and state leaders, and developed their own leadership skills. Participants were also involved in addressing the needs of the community through a legacy project chosen by the class. This year’s legacy project was the addition of handicap accessible restrooms at HOPE Park located inside Big Springs Park in McDonough. They also participated in beautification projects at the park. During the graduation ceremony, members of the Leadership Henry board of directors presented the class with plaques and engraved portfolios. Attend-

ees enjoyed a video with memories of their class year, created by SCB-TV, a sponsor of the program. Henry County Chamber of Commerce President David Gill challenged the class to take the leadership skills gained during the program year and to utilize them in service to the community. Several awards were also given out during the evening. The Edward S. Bridges Community Spirit Award is bestowed on a Leadership Henry alumnus who exhibits a spirit of service to Henry County. Leadership Henry Board Chair J. D. Hardin presented the 2017 award to Scott Whitmire. “Scott Whitmire is being recognized as much for his leadership as he is for his selfless giving,” shared Hardin. “Look up the word volunteer in the dictionary and there you will find Scott’s image. His contributions to Leadership Henry will stand for years to come, and the example left by his service can be used as a standard for those wanting to serve no matter where it is.” Emeritus board member Joyce Rodgers presented the Joyce Rodgers Heart of Henry Award.

This honor is selected by the current class and bestowed upon a class member that they feel displays the highest leadership skills. The Class of 2006 created the award as a way to honor Board Emerita Joyce Rodgers for her consistent support, dedication, and leadership skills. In addition to the honoree being named in front of the class at graduation, the person chosen for this honor will serve a one-year term on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Mrs. Rodgers presented the 2017 award to class member Scott Mahone. “Scott Mahone’s ability to relate with all fellow class members while demonstrating a passion for leading through helping endeared him to those with whom he spent the last ten months,” describes Hardin. “Scott will now take these leadership skills with him to serve a one-year term on the Henry County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors.” Congratulations to all of the Leadership Henry award winners and graduates.

Service Leadership (Message from the Chair, Don Dunlap)

As we look forward to celebrating our country’s independence, we reflect on the spirit of our nation’s founders, and their love for their fellow-man and their respective communities. We seek to develop that spirit of selfless giving in the participants in our program as well. This year’s Youth Leadership Henry class was offered several opportunities to volunteer with a variety of local non-profit organizations, and they really enjoyed being able to apply what they had learned about service-leadership

to activities to benefit their local community. Our Board of Directors is planning to expand this even more this year, allowing many opportunities for these amazing high school sophomores to volunteer. If you belong to one of the great nonprofit organizations here in our community, and you would like the opportunity to work with a few of this year’s class on one of your projects/events, drop us a line at youthleadership@leadershiphenry.com and let’s explore the possibilities! The dates of this year’s class are below, so you’ll have an idea of both the time frame of the class, and the dates they are already committed to class events. Speaking of dates, we are currently accepting applications for our Class of 2018! If you know a rising High School sophomore who has a love for their community and a spirit of servant leadership, encourage them to apply at youthleadershiphenry.com. The application deadline is August 23rd, but early

applications are encouraged to ensure they complete all facets of the process in time. Interested applicants should check their calendar to ensure their availability at the mandatory class meetings: Reception & Orientation • Tuesday, September 26, 2017 (6:30 p.m.) Monthly Programs • Saturday, October 7, 2017 – Teambuilding Day • Saturday, November 4, 2017 – Public Safety Day • Saturday, December 2, 2017 – Education Day • Saturday, January 20, 2018 – Hospital Day • Thursday, February 15, 2018 – State Government Day • Saturday, March 10, 2018 – Class Service Project
