it all.

READY FOR A LITTLE REINVENTION?

HENDRIX IS A COLLEGE THAT PLAYS BY ITS OWN RULES.

Not stuffy. Not stale or stuck in old ways of thinking. Because at Hendrix, we know the power of reinvention. We know it’s the secret to being ready for the future. And we know we’re the best place on the planet to show you how to master it.

1

WE EXIST TO ACTIVATE TOMORROW’S THINKERS, DOERS, & ACHIEVERS. That’s nothing new at Hendrix. It’s been our way since 1876. When your mind is open to the possibilities, you see the world differently. You’re primed to innovate, create, and most of all, REINVENT. Why does the power to reinvent matter? For starters, it’s the ultimate in entrepreneurial thinking — the surefire way to always, always be in demand. Reinvention equals relevance. If you’ve got it, you can do anything, anywhere. It means you’ve got the guts and the drive to not only change with the times but also to lead the way forward.

THIS IS OFFICIALLY A COLLEGE THAT CHANGES LIVES* (and we could be the one that changes yours). *Colleges That Change Lives by Loren Pope has been published since 1996 and profiles 40 of the best/most unique colleges in the United States. And we’ve been in it since day one. That’s a lot of life changing.

4

The Learning at Hendrix

ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE COLLEGES IN THE NATION* (wants to teach you a thing or two). *U.S. News & World Report recognizes us for what we’re doing to reimagine everything from curriculum to campus life to how we think about tech and use our spaces + a whole lot more. What drives us forward — YOU.

MEET YOUR PROFESSORS, EXPERTS, INTREPID GUIDES, MENTORS, CHAMPIONS, ALL-AROUND GREAT HUMAN BEINGS. THEY’RE ABOUT TO BECOME A MAJOR PART OF YOUR WORLD. When we make it onto lists like “best college” and “best value” and “best of the best” (which we do all the time), it’s because of our professors and what they can do for you in the classroom, out in the field, and beyond. Research how fracking impacts natural habitats in North Dakota alongside

Professors Moran and McClung — and then co-publish a scientific paper with them. Or retrace the march for Civil Rights with our Dean of Students through Birmingham and Selma, Alabama, and Memphis, Tennessee. Hendrix professors are here to guide you. Their job: help you discover just what you’re capable of becoming.

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN

to think in a zillion directions. That’s the power of liberal arts thinking. It gives you the knowledge and know-how to connect the dots, unearth insight, and unleash your brainpower. Here, you work closely with professors and advisors who push you to own your education. Take Ruanda McFerren ’11, an interdisciplinary major who combined an American Studies major with a minor in sociology. That ability to think outside the norm landed her a spot as Kansas City’s program manager where she

interacts with people from all over the city and many different backgrounds. Discover the connections that will propel you forward. That brings us to The Engaged Citizen (TEC). Our First-Year Academic Experience trains your brain to think across disciplines and brings together history, science, math, art, religion, sociology, engineering, and much more. It’s designed to make you think and rethink. This is next-level learning, a very Hendrix-y experience.

The Life at Hendrix

YOUR IDEA OF LIFE AT A SMALL COLLEGE. You’ve got to think big. A small campus gives you the room to do that. Hendrix is unapologetically Hendrix. Most of our traditions are rather untraditional. Some are outrageously silly. (Shirttails is our oldest tradition and freshman dorm dance off!) Others have a lot of heart (like Campus Kitty, our annual fundraiser for area nonprofits). We embrace our dining hall’s wacky theme days and queue up ASAP for the Sundaes on Thursdays tradition (oh, so many toppings). Point is, on our 175-acre campus, you live life big!

That’s Ancient Greek for “Unto the whole person,” the Hendrix motto.

Peaceful, bucolic, quiet. NOT ALWAYS! Not with the Ghost Roast, SoCo54, Finals Rave, The Red Brick Film Fest, concerts, and screen-out-on-the-brick-pit movie nights. THE “OFFICIAL-ISH” HENDRIX TO-DO LIST. 1. Crunch the pecan shells in front of MC Reynolds. Close your eyes. It sounds like snow. 2. Check out a bike at the library. (The Frida Kahlo is a fav!) 3. Take over a patio swing at Ellis. 4. People watch @ The Brick Pit. 5. Capture the elusive Disco Tray in the Hendrix Café. 6. Pet a campus cat (or two) for luck.

THE WAY YOU LEARN.

WE DID. If you’re prepared to reinvent — you’re prepared for anything/ everything. The world needs adaptable, responsive, nimble brains. Learning at Hendrix is designed to be a high-impact, hands-on, totally immersive experience. You go to the middle of the conversation, the problem, the project. We design programs (some happen right on campus and others take you around the globe) to get you the resumebuilding experience to stand out, 21st-century style.

23

The Experiences at Hendrix

YOU’RE GOING ON AN

ODYSSEY. We’re the pioneers of experiential learning. Fact is, we were doing it before pretty much anyone else. In 2005, we formulated a four-year map of above-and-beyond learning experiences. Pick experiences in Artistic Creativity, Global Awareness, Professional and Leadership Development, Service to the World, Undergraduate Research, or Special Projects. 100% of students do at least three hands-on Odyssey learning experiences. We dubbed it Odyssey because it’s epic.

1) FUNDING – To date we’ve awarded more than $4,000,000 in dedicated Odyssey funding. We’ll help you apply.

Odyssey is your journey your way. Here’s how we get you started:

24

2) SUPPORT – From some of the biggest brains around. Odyssey is your journey but we give you the expert guides to make it happen. 3) RESULTS – It’s real-world experience x 1000. This will transform your resume and give you plenty to talk about during interviews. You’re going to learn some mad skills — ideation, project management, research, problem-solving, even prototyping.

The Experiences at Hendrix

HATCH YOUR IDEA. MAKE YOUR PITCH. SCORE YOUR FUNDING. JOURNEY ON. Odyssey can be as big as you want to make it. We help you design internships, conduct research, serve others, solve problems, test theories, experience the world, make art, even hike national parks with a camera. Pursue your ideas. Find your purpose.

Tristan Norman traveled to Thailand to attend Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus’s ninth Social Business Day Summit. Tristan got inspired to use social entrepreneurship to reimagine climate resilience in the face of climate change.

Andrea Stitt and Kailyn Fish, Odyssey partners, spent a summer in Athens delving into modern Greek. They explored how modern speech differs from Ancient Greek.

Terri Tran studied Arabic, Tamazight (Berber language), computer science, and the effects of economic development on women in developing countries at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. This is her on an overnight in the Sahara Desert.

Kelly Gray turned her hometown of Langkawi, Malaysia into her Odyssey. She worked with Trash Hero Langkawi to tackle microplastics and trash in the ocean, met with the CEO of Coca-Cola Malaysia to talk recycling, and championed island clean up. Check out her bags of trash.

Keane Sammon worked for six weeks with the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds in Cape Town. His emphasis: the endangered African Penguin. He still made time to meet a cheetah.

ONE OF THE NATION’S TOP PRODUCERS OF FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS* MARGARET PITTMAN 1923 grad. Pioneering bacteriologist. Glass ceiling shatterer. Earned her global reputation before age 30. The first female to lead an NIH lab. The one to identify six types of H. influenzae, establish a link to meningitis in children, and develop an antiserum. Her research led the way to typhoid, cholera, and whooping cough vaccines. It wasn’t easy. She did it anyway. That’s Hendrix.

To be named a Fulbright Scholar, you have to be more than smart. Our graduates make the cut again and again. Fulbrighters go on to head governments, win Nobel Prizes, get named MacArthur Foundation Fellows, and score Pulitzer Prizes.

He also wears the hat of content creator and works with roughly 700 public schools in 48 states to help strengthen their brands through mobile apps, websites, and more. At Hendrix, he was a staff writer for The Profile, the student-run newspaper. He delivered live, play-by-play commentary for Warrior baseball games. And he served as Vice President of Student Senate. His resume doesn’t end there. Right now, he and his team use their research acumen to fuel original content

In his spare time, he oversees the Young Democrats of Arkansas’ social media accounts and develops the online presence of chapters across the state. Apptegy gives him the room to grow his love for politics and public policy into an ever-evolving career.

“It’s difficult doing what we do, but Hendrix prepared me for that kind of workload. I got used to doing a lot of high-level and high-quality work on a regular basis.” Apptegy founder and CEO Jeston George on liberal arts graduates: “They don’t just know things. They know how to learn.”

Hendrix grads/Apptegy employees include: Kelsi Stimack ’18, Joy Spence ’18, Barrett Goodwin ’17, My Nguyen ’16; Travis Howk ’17, Hunter Owen ’12, Greg Cameron-Cooper ’09, and Sydney Meyer ’17.
