Danville Team Scores Homecoming Victory Against Southmont

By David Winters
Riding high off of a sweet victory on the road against their rivals, Danville returned home to the friendly confines of Warrior Stadium to take on the 5-0 Southmont Mounties.
After an exciting afternoon of parading through the streets, participants and many parade viewers made their way to the high school to settle in on a beautiful, perfect-for-football September evening, to see if the Warriors could cap off the night with another victory.
Danville set the tone early with a near flawless display of offensive excellence. Senior quarterback Kale Payne quickly showed why he was one of the quarterbacks to watch in 3A at the start of the season. He finished the Warrior’s first possession with a 27-yard toss to running back Andrew Poppa. Caleb Harvey added the extra point, giving Danville the early 7-0 lead.
Southmont, on their first offensive possession, gave a glimpse of why they were able to start 5-0 on the season. They marched down the field, rather easily, until the Warrior defense collected their thoughts and came up with the right formula to stop the Mounties, albeit on their own 8-yard line.
Starting deep in their own territory, Payne connected deep for a big gainer, only to have a holding penalty negate the pick up. Not to worry, however, as Payne connected with Brayton McMahon for 43 yards to move the ball into Southmont territory. The offense would stall just a little as they were looking at a fourth down decision. As has been the case all season, when faced with a fourth down in their opponent’s territory, Coach Comer decided to go for it. They needed five yards to keep the drive alive so Payne promptly tossed it to Poppa for a 7-yard pick up and a first down. Shortly after, Payne connected with Senior Braxton Fulwider for 22 yards and the score. Harvey added the extra point and Danvill led 14-0 before the end of the first quarter.
The Warrior defense would continue to stifle the Mounties offense for the rest of the first half. Payne and Tyler Doston would connect before halftime on an 11- yard pass into the end zone, giving Danville the 21-0 halftime lead.
Southmont would not fare much better in the second half as Danville continued to control both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Matthew McGovern would get into the scoring column with a 9-yard rushing touchdown giving the Warriors a 28-0 lead, after the Harvey PAT. Danville would score two more times when the defense returned a 65-yard fumble recovery for the score and then back-up quarterback Trey Thompson connected with Teke Tanksley for 25-yards and the score.
Danville continues their march to what they hope to be a successful post-season winning this Homecoming game easily by the final score of 43-0.
Payne finished 15-21 for 191 yards and 3 touchdowns. McGovern had a big night rushing 7 times for 76 yards and a touchdown.
The Warriors are now 5-1 on the season and travel up north to take on the Frankfurt Hotdogs on October 1 at 7pm.

Homecoming Floats, Ahoy!

From freshmen to seniors, the class floats showed grade A creativity.

Danville’s Public Works Department showed off some of their vehicles and equipment in the parade.

And in the end, the fun you make is equal to the candy you take home. After the crowd descended, there was little left for the street sweeper to pick up.

The band provided the beat for the parade that followed

The parade was a warm-up for the cheerleaders who cheered the Warriors to a victory.

Will Lacey passed out candy while a Parks & Recreation truck carried a band of merry bubble blowers.

With so many vehicles in the parade, it was comforting to have York Towing take part, in case of emergency.

The appearance of the fire truck signalled the end of the parade.
