Council OKs Traffic Study
Whither goes the traffic in Danville? How many vehicles are reaching their destination and how many are passing through? The answer may be forthcoming with the approval for an origin-destination traffic study by the Danville Town Council at the December 1, 2021 meeting.
The proposal was brought by Will Lacey, Assistant Town Manager and member of the Traffic Committee and be undertaken by Traffic Engineering, Inc.
The study would cost $8,850 and would be used to determine the ultimate destination of traffic entering Danville from each direction. The study would answer questions such as the percentage of traffic entering Danville from the east is through traffic whose destination is west (or north or south) of the town. The information would be used in rating the effectiveness of roadway improvements and the corresponding level of relief to downtown traffic.
Banning Engineering would provide limited professional services during the study for an additional $3,750.
Lacy reminded the Council that D.R. Horton had agreed to furnish up to $50,000 part of the agreement for the development of the Miles farm at the west edge of town. The study is expected to take 3-4 weeks.
In other business, DPW Superintendent Andy Pitcher receive approval on an expenditure request of $12,389.76 for three Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons at three crosswalk locations requested by the Danville School Corporation. The request was for the Town’s portion; the total cost will be split between the Town and the School Corporation.

Danville Represents in Hoopfest 2021

Brady Ruggles slams home 2 of his 42 points.

This past weekend brought to Danville an annual tradition, Hoopfest, where teams from near and far convene on Danville, Indiana for several games from 7th grade all the way up to the Varsity squads for both boys and girls.
The varsity girls played just one game on Friday as they took on the Indianapolis Crispus Attucks Tigers, who brought with them a very respectable record of 7-3. Considering the Tigers record, it was expected that this would be a tough game for the Lady Warriors to secure. However, the hosts had a different idea this night.
Danville jumped out to a 22-13 first quarter lead, setting an early pace that would continue throughout the game. The Tigers never really made a serious run at the Warriors, who won this one easily by the final score of 59-38.
Isabelle Wooten continued her breakout season by scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, adding yet another double-double to her resume. Kooper Stone finished with 12 points.
Next up for the girls’ team is a home game against Greencastle on December 7.
The big story line for the weekend for Danville would happen when the boys’ varsity team kicked off its season against Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter. The big question coming into this season is whether Coach Brian Barber would be able to put together a winning formula for a squad that lost a top player to graduation in Kobe Ward, had a talented player transfer out and then welcomed a transfer from Avon into the program. It is tough to argue against that a clear bright spot heading into this season is Senior stand out Brady Ruggles, who is entering his second season with Danville after transferring from Illinois just before the start of the 2020-2021 season. We should know soon if his high level of play will be enough to carry the team into the post-season.
The game against the Raiders started out with deep concern when the team failed to launch offensively and trailed Ritter 18-9 after the first quarter. While the second quarter brought more offensive success, Danville was still outscored by three points and trailed at half-time by a score of 37-25.
Saying that the second half was better than the first is quite the understatement. Specifically, the third quarter proved to be the turning point in the game with Danville outscoring Ritter 25-8. More specifically, Ruggles decided that he was going to put this team on his back down the stretch with a ‘not on my court’ mentality toward the visitors. His laser light focus and determination led him to a 42 point night, which included shooting success of more than 60% (14-23) from the floor and hitting 11 of 12 free throws. His 42 points was just one from the school record set by Nick Scott at 43.
Ruggles, when asked how he felt about hitting that mark, didn’t take all of the credit. “It’s definitely a good feeling seeing work payoff and winning our first game,” placing emphasis on the team instead of on himself. “It felt great being back on the court with the guys…we’re planning on cutting some nets down this year,” Ruggles said making clear they intend on playing well into March.
As in all team sports, it will take more than one person to bring long-term success. However, if this first game is any indication, it is clear that a leader is emerging, and opponents should be on notice.
Danville ended up holding off a Ritter run down the stretch and winning 68-58. Ruggles finished with 42 points and 9 rebounds. Brayton McMahon added 9 points.
The boys’ basketball team also played on Saturday and easily defeated Eminence by a final score of 74-31. Ruggles led the team in scoring that game also with 27 points. Freshman Jace Scrafton add 14 points and Sophomore Caden Collins contributed 13 points.
Next up for Danville boys is a trip to Southmont on December 10.
Indiana Lyons Keepin’ Unbeaten Season
