Danville Girls Team Crush Crawfordsville
By David Winters
The Danville Girls had just one game since the previous publication of The Republican and it was a road trip to Crawfordsville on November 27 to take on the 3-4 Athenians, in a Sagamore Conference match up. The Warriors would seek to avenge their loss to rival Tri-West just 8 days prior.
This game was never in doubt as Danville jumped out to a first quarter lead of 18-6. The dominance continued in what was a half of great team play and ball distribution. No player finished with more than six points in the first half, with Haley Ancelet and Cameryn Rector each hitting that mark, and the Warriors took a 29-13 lead into the halftime locker room. The team would put the offensive engine on cruise control in the second half and won this one going away, 54-30, to improve their record to four wins and three losses on the season. Leading Danville in scoring was Ancelet with 16 points while Isabelle Wooten continued her board dominance and hauled in a team-high 18 rebounds. Next up for the Warriors is a home game against Indianapolis Crispus Attucks on December 4 and another home game on December 7 against Greencastle.

The Lyons are 4-0 to begin the 2021-22 ABA season and ranked as high as they have ever been in their four-year franchise history. They won the ABA’s North Central Region in the 2020- 21 season and competed in
the ABA Final Eight in St. Louis. The ABA is comprised of nearly 200 teams across North America and Japan.
This season, the ABA moved the Lyons to the Midwest Region, where they compete against teams from Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. Outside of region play, the team’s schedule also includes ABA foes from Ohio.
The Jazz, who are based in Nashville Tenn., boast an identical 4-0 record. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams. A rematch is scheduled for Feb. 26 in Nashville.
“This is a huge game for us,” said Tyrone Brown, who shares ownership of the team with his wife, Deborah. “The Jazz are a very good team, so we need the Lyons Den to be full of fans and roaring loudly.”
While the Lyons are comprised of players from across the nation, two Hendricks County athletes shine on the team.
Danville Community High School alumnus Dillon Ware leads the team in scoring with 115 points and in shots blocked with 8 in four games. Ware is in his second season with the team.
Brownsburg High School graduate Kendric Lee, who was a 2020-21 ABA All-Star, leads the team with 34 assists. Lee is in his fourth season with the Lyons.

New Look For 2021 Christmas on the Square at Danville

With the removal of the old community Christmas tree at the northeast corner of the court house yard, the decision was made to have a new tree planted at a new location, on the southeast corner of the yard. To create a holiday scene, a grouping of seven other trees of different sizes joined the new conifer.

One of Santa’s helpers carefully place a star atop the new community Christmas tree. A measure was added so that families can take a picture each year to document how the tree, and the family, had grown.

Danville Councilman David Winters dedicated the new tree at the beginning of the event.

Families took advantage of the display for photographs that just might end up as Christmas cards.

The chances of getting a photo with a gingerbread man and and a dee? Pretty good, at Christmas on the Square.

An auxiliary Santa with alternate means of transportation stood by in case of a sluggish sleigh situation.

These girls brought their own sparkle to Christmas on the Square.

Trackless Train rides were one of the free activities for all ages at Christmas on the Square 2021.

At 6 o’clock, the moment had arrived. Santa and his helper flipped the big switch to light up the sanopy of lights and signal another holiday season in Danville.
