Danville Takes On Athenians

The Danville Football Warriors looked to notch their second straight win after an early season set back.
Coming together with a unified front is exactly what is needed to get back on course for a team that is hungry for, and will accept nothing less than, another trip to the big stage in November.
The Warriors traveled west to take on the Crawfordsville Athenians in a conference match up that always seems to add an element of focus to the game. This would be the last game to work out any remaining kinks before the team travels just a few miles north to Tri-West for the annual rivalry game with the Bruins, easily the most looked-forward-to game each season.
It took no time for the Warriors to establish control on the home team’s field early as they stopped Crawfordsville on defense, taking over after a failed fourth down conversion attempt by the hosts. Kayle Payne and the Danville offense wasted no time in capitalizing on the fourth down stop when Payne connected with Kent State-bound Tyler Dostin on a 56-yard touchdown pass. Warriors lead 7-0.
On the next possession, the Danville offense quickly got the ball back after an interception by BJ Wuest. They would quickly capitalize on a 3-yard scamper into the end zone by Kaden Manning.
The offense never slowed down from there as Matthew McGovern would get his turn at the ball and take it 19 yards to the house putting Danville up solidly in the second quarter, 21-0. Danville’s defense never eased up either and the Warriors won this one easily, 41-0.
Payne finished 12-17, 158 yards and touchdown. Matthew McGovern had a nice breakout game carrying the ball 8 times for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Danville is now 3-1 on the season and are already gearing up for their trip to take on the Bruins on Friday, September 17 at 7pm.
Hometown Talent Still Entertains, 25 Years Later
Levi Riggs will close out the Summer Sounds on the Square series for 2021 on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. on the court house square.
But Riggs was very much the entertainer 25 years ago, according to this article found in the pages of The Republican from 1996.
“Levi Riggs, Danville Middle School Grade 6, is back by popular demand; he will be giving an encore performance during the “Nothing but Country” musicial concert sponsored by the Danville Community High School Choral Department on Novemeber 2. Levi brought down the house at last year’s Grade 5 “Monster Mash” with his rendition of “Sold!”

Fast-talking is not all this young man can do well. He has participated in the summer 4-H program with his Jersey cows at both the county leveland in the Indiana State Fair. Geography and military history, Civil War and World War are subjects that have special interest to him. Levi is also interested in sports, particularly football and basketball.
Levi has sung solo and as a member of children’s choirs at church; he also plays the French horn in the Grade 6 Band at the Middle School.”
Local Business Promotes Live Music and Community Spirit
Steve Kisner, Don Steinmetz, Tracy McGhee, Levi Riggs and Allen Kiger are all Danville School graduates. Despite leading disparate lives they have another thing in common.
They had a dream to bring Live Music to Danville.
So far, they’ve succeeded in bringing Grammy-winning band, The Kentucky Headhunters, with special guest Cornfield Mafia, to Danville’s Ellis Park on August 7.
And on September 11, they brought to the same venue, Crush, a Bon Jovi Tribute Band, with Snakeskin Cowboy opening up. Another friend and Danville grad, Jeff Daugherty, sang the national anthem at both shows.
The fledgling promotoers gave back to the community by allowing Danville Rotary to sell 50/50 tickets at both concerts that raised $368 for Danville scholarship and allowed Boots & Bling to raise money last Saturday for a parent-funded Homecoming Dance.
Signts N Sounds advertised on local Radio WYRZ 98.9 FM and in The Republican Newspaper and used Sycamore Printing for all of its posters and flyers. that were distributed in seven counties that included eight cities. They were hung in 7 counties that included 8 cities.
All the event sponsors were local businesses. Local vendors were hired and Danville Police and Fire Departments were used for security and safety.

The members of Sighs N Sounds promotion contribute special talents to the business: Allen Kiger is the Creative Director/Producer/Writer. Tracy McGhee is Directory of Strategy & Marketing; Don Steinmetz is Business & Finance Manager; Levi Riggs, sucessful professional singe/ songwriter, is Business Advisor. Steve Kisner is in charge of Web Development.
These local boys are not only making good with their business, they are bringing a shared experience to the community where they grew up.
