Downtown Danville Takes a Creative Path

The Downtown Danville Partnership is adding an artistic flair to the Historic Court House Square area with a new program, Creative Community Pathways.
The first project was a mural by Julie Vornholt on the exterior wall of the Homegrown Salon, 52 N. Indiana.
The next project is another mural, which is underway this week, on the south-facing brick wall of 76 South Jefferson. The 12’x 8’ postcard mural is the creation of Katie Pourcho, art teacher at North Elementary, and 2020 Indiana Teacher of the Year.
The design is inspired by the “Greetings From” tourism postcards that were popular for decades. Within the letters are local landmarks. It’s hoped the mural will become a popular “photo op” for visitors and residents alike.
Also in the works are smaller works of “street art” at various locations around the square, designed and executed by Mary McCartney-Jones, one of the artists at the Gallery on the Square. The murals, and the smaller works of art will be paid for and maintained by the Downtown Danville Partnership.

Katie Pourcho’s design for the latest downtown mural.
The mission of the Downtown Danville Partnership is to develop, promote, and sustain Danville’s historic courthouse square as Hendricks County’s gathering place and its retail, civic, entertainment, and government center.

A rewarding volunteer program at Hendricks County Senior Services is looking for volunteers for SHIP, the State Health Insurance Program.
This program is a free health insurance counseling service for people with Medicare. This is provided by the Indiana Sate Department of insurance and funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
“Our SHIP counselors provide free impartial information to assist consumers in making decisions regarding their Medicare choices and questions” states Deanne Sanders-Below, coordinator of In-Home Services atHendricks County Senior Services. “Ship is not affiliated with any insurance company or agency and does not sell insurance. They are staffed by a crew of volunteer counselors who have completed intensive training to offer objective assistance in complete confidence,” states Below.
SHIP is driven by volunteers who are committed to helping people with Medicare determine the best healthcare choices for their individual situations and to be good consumers of Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, Part D Drug Coverage, Long Term Care Financing andLow-Income Assistance Programs.
To become a SHIP counselor, you must complete a 30- hour training, either virtually or in-person; complete volunteer shadowing, additional training in the spring and fall and have a desire to help Medicare Beneficiaries in your community.
If you are interested in an important and rewarding volunteer opportunity, please contact Deanne Sanders-Below at 317-910- 5367 or the State’s SHIP office at 1-800-452-4800. You can also visit www. medicare.in.gov and click the “Become a SHIP Volunteer” link for more information.
