THOMAS G. “TOM” SAUER

76, of Plainfield and formerly of Terre Haute, passed away at his residence on the evening of July 26, 2021 surrounded by his beloved wife and two daughters.

Tom was born in Indianapolis on January 24, 1945 to the late Robert and Mary Sauer. He grew up in St. Mark Parish and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in the class of 1963. Tom went on the University of Notre Dame where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Following his education at Notre Dame, Tom was drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War era. After his honorable discharge, Tom went on to attend Indiana University where he earned his master’s degree and then his Doctorate in Comparative Literature.. Tom was a recipient of the Fulbright Scholar Award giving him opportunity to travel abroad as a student to Austria and Germany; and produced his appreciation for the German language and European culture.

It was during his time at IU that he met the love of his life, Kathleen Prevo. Tom and Kathy met playing co-ed volleyball on Sunday afternoons in an old gym on campus. Their courtship transitioned to marriage on a snowy, 10-degree day on January 10, 1981 in St. Mark Catholic Church.

Tom’s career as a college professor began at the University of Virginia as a German professor. He then began working for Indiana State University in 1990 as an English Professor and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Tom retired from Indiana State University on June 30, 2010 as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Tom was fluent in German and was an avid reader and teacher of Shakespeare.

Even after his retirement, Tom was dedicated to expanding his knowledge. He was active in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Indiana State University (OLLI), a program designed for those age 50 and “better” who wish to pursue lifelong learning. He also enjoyed travelling with Kathy during retirement, often revisiting his favorite European locations. Tom had fond memories of travelling to the Outer Banks in North Carolina with Kathy and their girls through their childhood and into their adulthood where he often relaxed on the beach with a book. Tom delighted in taking Kathy on Sunday mornings to the British National Theatre Live in Indianapolis. They would often stop for a craft beer at one of their favorite spots in Fountain Square.

When not traveling or learning, Tom could be found in his yard or fixing something around his home. With a jovial spirit and familiar laugh, he made friends nearly everywhere he went, and was continually optimistic, even through the final days of his life.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Kathleen “Kathy” (Prevo) Sauer; his two daughters and their husbands, Laura (Matthew) Kohus and Karen (Joe) Costanzo; his grandchildren, William, Henry, and Katie Kohus and Michael Costanzo; his brothers, Robert “Bob” (Joyce) Sauer and William “Bill” Sauer; his sister-in-law, Claudia Prevo; and a host of friends, colleagues, and extended family members.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters-inlaw, Beverly Sauer and Kathy Sauer.

Tom’s Life Celebration® took place Monday, August 2, in the O’Riley Funeral Home, Indianapolis. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, August 3, in St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, Indianapolis.

MORRIS EUGENE MCCLURE, M.D.

known as “Jake” since childhood or “Doc” to many of his friends, passed away peacefully July 28, 2021 at Cumberland Trace, with three daughters of his six children by his side.

He was born on October 8, 1926 the fourth child of Mary Mentra Winters McClure and Cover Sullivan McClure.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life of 74 years, his wife Betty Rose (Roeder) McClure (d. June 17, 2020), brothers Cover “Mick” George McClure, Robert “Bob” William Mc- Clure, and sister Phyllis Ann McClure (who died shortly after birth).

He attended High School in Decatur, Ind. where he met Betty. They married on May 26,1946. He was drafted in 1945 during his senior year of high school moving to Palm Springs, Calif. for training with the US Navy. Trained as an electronics technician he was stationed in Great Lakes, Mich. for the duration of WWII. After his release from active duty Jake attended Indiana University Ft. Wayne and Bloomington to pursue a medical degree. He graduated from IU School of Medicine in 1955 followed by a one year internship in general practice in Lima, Ohio and one year of medical practice in Columbus Grove, Ohio.

He opened a general practice in 1957 in Union City, Ind. Moving to Plainfield, in 1968, he took a job at Chrysler Motors Corporation and then Eli Lilly as a staff physician. He worked as an ER physician for Hendricks County Hospital before moving to Myrtle Beach, S.C. in 1982. He worked in the HSA Costal Carolina Hospital ER, Loris SC as its director before establishing a private practice in North Myrtle Beach, SC.

Retiring in 1995, he moved to Sebring, Fla. Betty and Jake moved back to Plainfield, in 2017 to be closer to their children, residing at Cumberland Trace Assisted Living.

From an early age Jake was interested in music. He was accomplished with the coronet, trumpet, flugelhorn, valve trombone and upright bass. Over his lifespan, no matter where he lived, he would find a band or people to play with. He was in several different Big Bands, Dixieland Jazz Bands and improvisational Jazz groups. He wanted to pass this on to his six children, so as soon as they were able they all learned to play some kind of musical instrument. His children have now passed on the love of music to many of his grandchildren.

Jake also loved the game of golf, so much so, his wife Betty took it up as to not be a “golf” widow. Much to his chagrin she became a “little” better at the game than he accomplishing three hole in ones during her life. Another love of Jake’s was fishing. He would put together his tackle box, pick up his rod and reel and go off to drop a line in the water for hours on end. He had many skills from welding, wiring, electronics, engine repair and woodworking.

His most important quality was the compassion and care he showed to his patients. He would make house calls sometimes allowing his children to tag along. For those less fortunate or those having hard financial times he would often barter his services and would accept payment with chicken eggs, babysitting or other means.

His life will continue through his six children Thomas Mc- Clure (Jayne), Timothy McClure,M.D. (Kathie), Dennis Mc- Clure,M.D. (Anna), Elizabeth Bowen, Barbara McClure-Allen (Steve), and Theresa Ford (Gary), his 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Following cremation a private Celebration of Life for both Jake and Betty will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family ask that you pay forward to those in need, be it a person, animal, or charity. Hampton Gentry Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.

ANTHONY “TONY” COVEY

78, of Maumelle, Akansas, passed away July 29, 2021.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Smitherman Covey to whom he married on January 6, 1963; sons- and daughtersin-law, Bruce & Sara Covey of Cartersville, Georga and Jason & Kimberly Covey of Gainesville, Georgia; grandson, Tucker Covey; siblings, Janice McCormick, Hillard Covey, Clayton Covey, Joe Covey, Mary Gilbert, Lenita Niquette, Thomas Covey, Randy Covey and Kenneth Covey, several nieces and nephews also survive.

In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Covey will be cremated, and a private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Maumelle Animal Services.

ROBERT EARL LYNN

73, of Plainfield, passed away on July 29, 2021.

He was born on January 1, 1948 in Muncie, Ind. to the late Roy M. Lynn and Betty Jane Corey Lynn. Robert graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1966, Ball State University in 1970 and earned his Master’s in Education in 1972.

He was employed by Plainfield Public Schools, where he was a devoted teacher for 39 years at Plainfield High School. While teaching the sciences, he also coached cross country, track and ladies basketball.

Robert was a member of the Danville Christian Church where he served as an elder, youth director and adult Sunday school teacher. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed hiking, biking, landscaping and many other outdoor activities.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Roy M. Lynn and Betty Jane Corey Lynn.

He is survived by his sister, Jo Ellen Lynn White; brother, Dr. Donald R. (Mary) Lynn; nieces, Amanda Smith and Nikki Dukes; nephews, Corey White and Rev. Bryce Lynn; 8 great nieces and nephews.

Robert was a loving, caring brother and uncle and will be missed.

A Celebration of Life took place August 3, in Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield. Burial followed in Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

VIRGINIA EDWARDS

100, passed away on August 1, 2021.

She was born in Kentucky on September 3, 1920 to the late Malum Stonewall Jackson and Stella Barnette. Virginia was a loving wife, mother and a dedicated homemaker. She enjoyed mowing the lawn, keeping a clean home and gardening.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Edwards; sons, Herbert and Larry Edwards; several brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be Thursday, August 5, at noon, in Center Valley Cemetery.

Survivors include a brother, Bob Barnette; sisters, Betty Buchannon and Kathy Light; grandchild, Lori Edwards.

NANCY L. DUNCAN

78, of Plainfield, passed away on July 31, 2021, peacefully, at her home, surrounded by family.

She was born on July 25, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Leon and Doris Gabriel Ford. She married Shelby Duncan on January 13, 1979.

She was a waitress/hostess at the Golden Phoenix Restaurant for many years before her retirement.

Nancy was a gracious kind-hearted person that always put others before herself.

She enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking; babysitting her grandchildren and the thing that was most important to her was loving her family and spending time with them.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Shelby; children, Debbie Gentry (Jon), Becky Mumaw (Claude), Teresa Schindler (Johnny), Cindy Craig (Rich), Angie Vance (David), Timmy Janney; stepchildren, Bill Duncan and John Duncan; grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Amber, Heather, Matthew, Brittany, Chris, Jessica, Sky, Levi, Kristin, Joshua, Anthony, Andrew, Ronnie, Dillon, Ashley, Chelsey and Derrick; brothers, Mike and Jeff Ford; aunt, Sandy Goodyear Clark and 34 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Bobby Janney; brothers, Dave Ford, Tom Ford, Lee Ford, Joe Ford and sister, Carol Blakely.

DORISAN IRENE TINDAL

90 of Danville, peacefully passed away in her home on July 28, 2021.

Dorisan was born on December 23, 1930 to Ray and Inez Dillman. On April 25, 1953, she married the love of her life, Joseph Tindal, after waiting on him to return home from faithfully serving his country.

When she was younger, she loved skating up a storm at the roller rink and fishing. She was a talented crocheter and enjoyed reading, keeping up with current events with magazines, watching Little House on the Prairie and Shrek, and having iced tea with her friend, Joyce. She was a loving homemaker who adored her family and celebrating the holidays with them.

In addition to her parents, Dorisan is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Joseph Tindal, and her brothers, Bill, Harold, and Chuck Dillman.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandy Young, Katherine Butrum, and Jody Illg; her grandchildren, Brandy Wesley, Heather Means, Jesse Young, Eli Young, Isaiah Illg, Tansie McClure, and Caleb Butrum; her five great-grandchildren; and her brother, Vernon Dillman.

ELIZABETH E. BURKEEN

80, of Clayton, passed away on July 30, 2021.

She was born in Tiline, Ky. on June 26, 1941 to the late Elmer and Nora Kayse. Elizabeth held various jobs over the years but working at the Indianapolis 500 Museum was her favorite. She was a loving mother and a dedicated homemaker.

Elizabeth was a member of the Cornerstone City Church. She enjoyed shopping, looking at jewelry, listening to music, watching QVC and SBC. Elizabeth was an animal lover, especially her dog, Jack.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Guess; siblings, Ellis, J.L. and Doc Kayse, Jean Quagliese and Else Boals.

Funeral services are pending with entombment at West Ridge Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandy (Ray) Drennan; son, Mike (Alice) Burkeen; brother, Paul (Judy) Kayse; grandchild, Phil (Teresa) Drennan; great-grandchildren, Eli, Evan and Landon Drennan; brother in law, Robert Boals.

RICK A. HARVEY

57, of Clayton, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, July 15, 2021. Graveside services for Rick took place Friday, July 30, in Fairfield Cemetery, Newman, Illinois, where he was laid to rest with his family.

Rick was born in Indianapolis, graduated from Cascade High School, and was a self-employed Recycler for many years. He was also a former member of the Clayton Masonic Lodge.

Rick was instrumental in the local food pantry, which provided food for the needy as well as programs for the homeless in Indianapolis. His concern for those less fortunate speaks volumes for his caring nature.

Survivors include his two sons, Rick Gilliam of Indianapolis, Alan Harvey of Albemarle, North Carolina, and many friends that cared about him.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Noel and Wanda Harvey.

DIANNE P. CLARK

61, of Brownsburg, passed away on July 22, 2021.

Dianne was born in Indianapolis, on November 3, 1959 to Richard Lee and Clara Bell (Goad) Bee. She loved animals, gardening, and flowers, a passion she got to apply to her career delivering flowers for Gillespie Florists.

She was a member of The American Legion and The Eagles, and she was a former secretary for the motorcycling organizations, ABATE and The Legion Riders.

Dianne is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Clara Bee.

She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Stadler; her grandchildren, Clara Stadler and Leo Stadler; and her siblings, Richard Bee Jr., Sandi Cramer, Tina Marie Williams, and Sherry Augenstein.

HOWARD GLENN MARTIN

86, of Brownsburg, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Howard was born June 9, 1935 in Portland, Tennessee the son of the late Ira and Ollie Mae Martin. He retired from data processing after working for Allison and EDS.

Howard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janice Martin; son, John (Andrea) Martin; sister, Jean Eden; and 4 grandchildren: Timothy and Sylvia Martin and Ryan and Haven Rivard.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, William, James, George, Robert, Richard and Martha Martin.

Services for Howard took place Monday, August 2, at Family Funeral Care, Indianapolis. Burial folloed at Brownsburg Cemetery with Military Honors.

HARRIETTE E. WARD

94, of Clayton, passed away July 27, 2021. Funeral Services for Harriette were Monday, August 2, in the Clayton Christian Church. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in Clayton Cemetery. Because of the untimely passing of her daughter, Victoria Jo “Vicki” Ward less than 24 hours following Harriette’s passing, these services were held jointly. (See Victoria E. Harriet was born in Indianapolis, the daughter of the late Walter V. and Gertrude E. (Balay) Spurlock. She was a graduate of Monrovia High School with the class of 1945.

Harriette was much more than a homemaker, although she so enjoyed taking care of her family. She was an active member of the Clayton Christian Church, having served as a Sunday School Teacher for more than 60 years. Her Christian servitude led her to be involved with the local Girl Scouts, having shared that with her daughter, Vicki, as well as Hendricks County Meals on Wheels for 40 years, and the food pantry feeding the needy through the Mill Creek Support Center. Harriette also taught the WRE for eight years.

Survivors include her daughter, Teresa (David) Danner, of Zionsville; son, Mark (Deanna) Ward of Plainfield; grandchildren, Elizabeth Creakbaum, Wendy Foster; brother, David Spurlock of Coatesville, and a sister, Ethel Spurlock of Monrovia.

VICTORIA JO WARD

71, of Clayton, passed away July 28, 2021. Funeral services for “Vicki” were Monday, August 2, in the Clayton Christian Church. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Clayton Cemetery. Because of the untimely passing of her mother, Harriette E. Vicki was born in Dallas, Texas, to the late Charles E. and Harriette E. (Spurlock) Ward. She was a graduate of Cascade High School with the class of 1967. Vicki later received a BA Degree in Business from Indiana University. She had been an account manager for multiple insurance companies for many years. She served in that capacity from Dallas, Texas, to Washington, D.C., and finally, Indianapolis, when she returned home.

Vicki was a member of the Clayton Christian Church. She was an avid reader, gardener, and was a wonderful cook. Vicki was active, along with her mother, Harriette, with the Hendricks County Meals on Wheels, the food pantry feeding the needy through the Mill Creek Support Center, as well as serving on the Liberty Township Election Board, helping with polling the local elections.

WILLIAM W. CARTER JR.

88, Brownsburg, passed away July 27, 2021.

He had been a district manager and retired from Graybar Electric in 1987 after 30 years. He attended Bluefield College and West Virginia University and received his Master’s degree from Pacific Western University.

He served in the US Army from 1955-57.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite.

William’s wife, Elizabeth Carter, preceded him in death in 2020.

Survivors include his daughter Diana Hernandez (husband Ernesto); grandchildren Alex Carter VanPelt (husband Justin), Kristin Hernandez and Aimee Hernandez.

Services were Monday, August 2, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Entombment with military honors followed at West Ridge Park Cemetery. Arrangements: Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg.

JAY K. HARBISON

75, of Plainfield passed away on July 30, 2021 in his home. He was born on February 7, 1946 in Crawfordsville, Indiana to the late Chester and E. Maxine Murray Harbison. He married Linda Cushman on August 17, 1969, and she survives.

He was an US Army Veteran serving in Vietnam where he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.

Jay was an IT manager for the State of Indiana for 35 years, retiring in 2012.

Jay was a member of the Plainfield United Methodist Church, the Amo Conservation Bird Dog Club and the Danville Conservation Club. Jay was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, skeet, and shooting precision air pistols and rifles.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Harbison, sons, Matt Harbison (Andrea) and Dave Harbison (Thy), and a sister Mischa Harbison (Robert). Also four grandchildren; Reese, Gage, Gerald, and Jessa.

PAMELA S. ABBOTT

age 77, of Clayton, passed away on July 24, 2021 in Plainfield Healthcare Center.

She was born on April 19, 1944 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the Late Carl I. and Pauline

Parker Burns. She married Ronald Abbott; he preceded her in death.She graduated from Clayton High School in 1962.

Pam was a homemaker. Survivors include her children, Shawna Tutterow (Steve), Greg Abbott; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, James Burns.

GARY K. WATSON, JR.

age 50, of Jamestown, Indiana, passed from this life on Tuesday July 20, 2021, at his residence.

He was born on Sunday September 13, 1970, to Gary K. and Pamela A. (Stein) Watson. Gary worked for 25 years in the maintenance department for Danville Parks Department. Gary was an avid pool player.

Gary is survived by his father, Gary Watson Sr. of Danville, a brother Jeffrey (Liza) Watson of Danville, a sister Tammy (David) Dooley of Danville, he is also survived by his nieces, Rylee and Averi Watson, Nikki (John) Angi, and nephews, Jacob (Mollee) Dooley and Andrew Dooley and one great niece, Stella Angi.

He was preceded in death by his mother Pamela A. Watson on March 29, 2021.

A Celebration of his life took place Sunday August 1, 2021 at Hendricks County American Legion Post # 118, Danville.

GREGORY JAY WALKER

63, of Plainfield, passed away Friday, July 23, 2021, at IU/West in Avon.

Born May 3rd, 1958, in Lebanon, Indiana he was the son of Alfred E. Walker and Grace A. (Blair) Walker.

He graduated from Avon High School with the class of 1976. Greg lived a full life; he was a loving man. He lived the last few years with his mother, Grace, taking care of her every need, all while maintaining a full time job, and caring for all the things around the house.

He was a lover of nature, sports, music (he played guitar and trumpet), and most of all family. Greg was an avid Colts fan, he loved going to Indy car races, fishing with his best friend Bob, gun collecting, traveling, hiking, and bike riding (including most recently his motorcycle). Greg had many pets over the years and recently lost his dog, Chloe, that he loved so very much.

Greg was a CNC Machinist for many years and most recently worked for Innovative Casting Technologies.

Survivors include his mother, Grace Walker of Plainfield; his children, Brandy (Tiffany) O’Reilly of Columbia City, Ind., Joshua Walker of Plainfield, Jordan Walker of Camby, and Jacob Walker of Plainfield; his brothers, Ted Walker of Apache Junction, Ariz. and Ron (Jackie) Walker of Plainfield; his sister Susan (Bruce) Gregory of Terre Haute; his four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and his best friend of 39 years, Bob Dye of Speedway.

He was preceded in death by his Father.

A gathering of family and friends took place Tuesday, August 3, at Center Community Church, Plainfield.

LISA DAWN FITE

57, of Monrovia, passed away July 28, 2021.

She was born on May 25, 1964 in Indianapolis to the late Virgil and Amey (Hodge) Grindean. Lisa married Bill Fite on June 8, 1985 in Indianapolis.

A 1982 graduate of Monrovia High School, Lisa went on to receive her Master’s degree in nursing from IU in Indianapolis. She worked at IU Health for 32 years retiring in 2020 as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Lisa was a member of the Grace Assembly of God Church in Whiteland.

CATHERINE E. RAYBALL

58, Avon, passed away July 27, 2021.

She was a graduate of Cardinal Ritter High School and received an Associate Degree from Vincennes University. She had been the owner and President of Allied Boiler and Welding.

A former avid horse lover, she participated in barrel racing and other equestrian activities. She had been the president and secretary of the Je-To Lake Association and was active in the restoration of the lake.

Her parents William and Barbara Rayball and a son Daniel Rayball preceded her in death.

She is survived by her longtime companion, Larry Seidensticker and sons, Douglas and Kevin Seidensticker.

Visitation took place Saturday, July 31 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg. Private interment at St. Malachy Cemetery will be held at a later date.
