4-H QueenContestants

In 1966 4-H Fair Queen candidates modeled afternoon dress. Pictured left to right: Back row: Janey Baynes, Miss Washington Township; Donna Garner, Miss Brown Township; Ann Linton, Miss Middle Township; Janice Sharp, Miss Union Township; Front row: Debbie Goodwin, Miss Center; Carol Wyeth, Miss Eel River Township.
As we’ve done for 61 years, this issue of The Republican introduces the candidates for the Hendricks County 4-H Fair.
The contest was added in 1960. Orginally, elimination contests took place in each of the 12 townships. The winner was Suzanna Glover, 16-year-old with five years in 4-H and representing Center Township.

In 1960, Suzie Glover was the first Hendricks County 4-H Fair Queen
In 1966, a bathing suit division was added. As the attitudes toward women evolved, the swimsuit portion also went by thewayside, and the “afternoon wear” modeling was changed to “business attire.”
In 1970, the township contests were eliminated, and first and second runner-up and Miss Congeneality added.
In 1995, the Carol Hitch Memorial Award was added as a tribute to the late Carol (Kincaid) Hitch, who was instrumental in conducting the Queen Contest for 25 years, and is presented by the Queen Committee to the contestant who shows the most improvement and helpfulness to other contestants during the series of workshops.
Today, the Queen’s Court consists of the Runner-up, three unranked Court members, and Miss Congeneality.
The Queen and her court are busy during the Fair at a variety of events, and presenting awards to winning 4-H Club members, and act as ambassadors for the 4-H Fair the rest of the year. The 2021 Hendricks County 4-H Queen will become eligible to be our county’s representative at the State Fair Queen contest later this year.
Photos of the 2021 4-H Fair Queen candidates are found on page 8 of this issue. The contest takes place on Satuday, July 10.
