Tribute

From:Court House Grounds

To: "Grandma Pete"

Thelma S. Bodily Stephenson May 27, 1916-March 5, 2021

On May 27th 2016, Grandma Pete worked her last day at Court House Grounds. When I asked her why she was quitting she replied, “um… because I’m 100!” (...that was four years ago.)

In 1916 Woodrow Wilson was president, Olivia de Havilland was born, James James Whitcomb Riley died, Cadillac first used a “key” start the ignition in their cars, King George V was on the British throne and Grandma Pete was born. Her parents were school teachers and both of her grandfathers crossed the plains in covered wagons as little boys with the Mormon Pioneers.

Working side by side with Grandma for the first 18 years of our business exposed us to an ethic that could only be taught by a woman who had her children during the depression and raised them during the war. As a team, we loved, we learned, we fought, we laughed, we cried, but most all we worked. Over the years the business has faced every sort of personal and economic challenge, not to mention things like, September 11th, and a pandemic. As business partners, Bill, Tracy and Dawnna, could not have survived without each other’s hard work and sacrifices, and we certainly could not have succeeded without Grandma. We “owned” the joint, she “ran” it… These past 4 years of working without her, we have missed her presence in our shop, her talents in the kitchen, her steady influence, reliable skills, and her spirit in our daily lives. She was the ultimate “war buddy” and now with her passing her absences seems painfully and sadly final.

We miss you already,

Court House Grounds

Tracy Jones
