Hendricks County’s Hindu Temple

www.baps.org/Global-Network/North-America/Indianapolis.aspx
By Krishna Lathish
According to Business Insider, there are a grand total of 2,892 religious institutions in Indianapolis; however, across the U.S., there are only 450 Hindu temples in total. Lucky for Hendricks County residents, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir in Avon is close to home, open to visitors of all denominations who want to learn more about Hinduism.
The BAPS Temple in Avon, Indiana was opened in 2005; Jayesh Kabaria has been with the temple since its birth and believes he’s reaped the benefits.
“I consider myself a volunteer. I’ve been looking after youth activities and all sorts of satsang (assembly) activities,” said Kabaria. “It’s made me a better person, because it helped me lose my egos, control my angers […] When I go there, I listen to the discourses and then understand what I need to do for myself.”
So what makes the temple different from a church, mosque, or synagogue? Some aspects, like assembly, may sound familiar, while others like aarti, the daily lamp ceremony, are unique to the mandir.
“Prior to COVID, all services happened once a week every Sunday. Usually, we have 2 aartis, one in the morning and one at night, and we have a thaal, which means offering food to God, 3 times as well, ” said Kabaria. “We also have Mahapuja once a month and Abhishek (liquid offering to the Gods). Mahapuja is every Punam (full moon).”
With Hindu temples so few and far between, the BAPS temple attracts devotees from all over Hendricks County and beyond.
“We were around 300-350 people who would gather for services, on a regular weekly basis. When we have a festival, it’s a different story; 1,000 to 1,800 people. It all depends on what festival we’re talking about, but regularly, around 350,” said Kabaria. “People drive 2 and a half hours to come to temple every Sunday. […] I would say that, in around a 100 mile radius, a lot of people come here. If you look at our metropolitan area, there’s only 2 temples: one Hindu temple and the other one’s our BAPS temple.”
But like all places of worship, the BAPS temple has had to adjust to the constrictions of COVID. Now, they’ve shifted most of their services to virtual meetings.
“We went to virtual sabhas every week. Technically, we closed, but never closed, because all the services were online We have 4 different virtual sabhas – 3 different sabhas are in English, and 1 is in Gujrati, which is predominantly the followers that we have. ” said Kabaria. “Since March, we always have been doing sabhas. All the celebrations that we have are also being done virtually as well.”
In any case, Kabaria assures that the temple’s doors, whether virtual or otherwise, are open to anyone who wants to stop by.
“The BAPS mandir has been open to all,” said Kabaria. “We make sure that the environment is helpful for everybody. If any community wants to come, they can come and visit us.”
