First United Methodist Church

The ďŹ rst Methodist Episcopal Church erected in this immediate section was built in the year of 1816 on the site where the Henderson Institute was located. This church was known as Rock Spring Church. In 1854, a new church was erected under the discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South on the lot diagonally across the street from the Henry A. Dennis Building. In 1889, a new building was erected at the intersection of Church and Garnett Streets, next to the building known as the Zollicoffer Law OfďŹ ce. In 1929, a new building was completed across Church Street. The English Gothic building was designed by local architect Eric Flannagan, Sr. The stained glass windows depict scenes from the life of Christ. In 1956 the educational wing and chapel were added. The chapel was given in memory of Paul H. Rose. On November 17, 1940 a uniting service was held at The First Methodist Church merging the congregations of Christ Methodist Church (formerly First Methodist Protestant Church) and the First Methodist Church as a single congregation. The Methodist Protestant Church built its ďŹ rst church in Henderson in 1861 on Garnett Street. In 1898, a new church was built on the corner of Wyche and Breckenridege Streets. As a result of the merger of the Methodist Protestant and the Methodist Episcopal and the Methodist Episcopal, South branches in 1939, this church took the name of Christ Church. They remained in this location until the merger with First Methodist Episcopal, South in 1940. Source: 125 Years of Methodism in Henderson

125 JP Taylor Rd. Henderson Office Hours: 10am - 5pm Church: 438-6179 or 438-7373 Parsonage: 438-3988

The South Henderson Church of God began with a small group of people having prayer meeting on the front porch of the home of Mrs. Mary Leonard Woodlief. The Rev. W. C. Crowder and Charles Rodgers followed up these meetings with a Tent Revival on the corner of Mason Street and Old Epson Road on the lot owned by Winfred Parrish. When the Tent Revival was over, the service moved to the George and Vangilee Leonard residence on Pine Street. Rev. Austin Hewitt, District Overseer from Wake Forest, preached several Sunday afternoon services. Rev. John L. Stephens, the N.C. State Overseer, preached a sermon and organized the church officially in the Spring of 1937. There were 13 charter members including: Elizabeth Leonard Campbell, Geneva Francis, Victoria Leonard, Shaw Grissom, George Leonard, JS (Sam) Leonard, Lillian Leonard. Vangilee Leonard, Artelia Martin, Sarah Leonard Moorefield, Haywood Stokes, Mollie Stokes and Jacqueline Thomas. The people grew in number and the church was moved to the home of J.S. (Sam) Lillian Leonard on Lehman Street. In 1938, a church was built at the intersection of Skenes Avenue and Old Epson Road. In 1948, a church and parsonage was built at 925 Lehman Street. That site served the church well for some 45 years. A new parsonage was purchased in the early 80’s on Lakeview Drive. We have had many pastors over the years: Rev., Rev. J.C. (Jody) Leonard, Rev. On behalf of all of us who call ‘Holy Innocents our parish home, we invite you to visit and worship with us. You will find we are a congregation with a rich history and proud tradition providing outreach and support to our community, our Diocese and beyond. We would love for you and your family to become a part of our parish family and our rich history. The Church of the Holy Innocents was officially organized in 1842 on Easter Sunday. The church was named in honor of John and Sarah Eaton’s 13-year old son, John Rust Eaton, who died in a hunting accident. The death of John Eaton made children and youth the keystone of Holy Innocents’ heritage. Our worship space is rich in symbolism expressed in wood, stone, brass and beautiful stained glass windows. Worship is an important part of our ministry at ‘Holy Innocents. There are many other ways to become involved besides our worship services; through pastoral care, community outreach, fellowship, and educational opportunities. We have a strong and growing youth program. These are just a few of the opportunities to grow in the body of Christ’s church and as a church family. If you visit, please let us know who you are and how we can help you feel at home. We welcome the opportunity for you to become a part of our parish family.
