Recalibrating the Vikings Baskett favors up-tempo adjustment
No Hicks, but Warriors are still loaded with talent

W
ebb got its first taste of life as a defending state champion during summer competition. “There were games we won because of the letters on the front of our jersey,” said head coach Leo Brunelli. Brunelli said it was nice having that advantage, but he doesn’t expect the same treatment in this area. The letters on the jerseys are the same and Webb does return several players from a team that capped a magical 2012-2013 season with a win over Statesville in the Class 3-A state final. But the magic was made possible in large part by current UNC freshman Isaiah Hicks, whose lengthy list of accolades included being named a McDonald’s All-American and the 2013 N.C. Associated Press Player of the Year. “I’m a lot better coach with a McDonald’s All-American on the team, as most coaches are,” said Brunelli. Hicks left an indelible imprint on the program and another ACC talent is missing too. Bryan Smith, the team’s sixth man and senior leader alongside Hicks, walked on the N.C. State football team. “It was probably the easiest year of coaching I’ve had as far as discipline because they handled everything,” said Brunelli. Brunelli said senior

He’s one of potentially three senior starters back along with Stefan Cates and Mitron Terry. Terry, a lightning quick and athletic wing player, was not practicing with the team in the beginning stages of preseason practice, but Brunelli said a return to the team — as early as this week — was a possibility. Terry was named to the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association District 6 third team a season ago. “On the basketball court, I never question anything about him,” said Brunelli. “The kid’s a competitor. The kid’s a gamer. When there was a big play to be made in the state playoffs, he was always in the equation.” The other returning starter is junior point guard Devonte Williams, a diminutive playmaker with good vision and long-range shooting touch. Brunelli added that Cates, already a proven versatile scorer, is attacking the rim with regularity now.
Senior guard Tyler Thomas is also back after providing crucial depth for the Warriors in their postseason run. Senior Tobiah Lewis, a 5-foot-10, 235-pound bruiser of a football tailback, did the same. He and classmates Nykwanza Henderson and Beau Smith will come over from the football team. Brunelli said he’s had to cut players that would have made it in past seasons. The eighth-year Webb head coach added that seven or eight players will need to score double-digit points in order for the team to play “state championship-caliber Warrior basketball.” Nailing down the rotation and combinations is the next step. “That’s probably the best part of coaching,” said Brunelli. “Every year you have a different makeup of kids. We have to find a way to get the most out of this group like last year’s team.”

Forget rebuilding. Otis L yons wants to win now despite the J.F. Webb girls losing four of their top scorers. L yons replaces the retired Kenneth Rogers as Webb head coach after ser ving as his assistant coach for the last five years. “I’m the type of person that expects to win early,” said L yons, a Creedmoor native. “I’m not in the process of rebuilding.” L yons said he has a good nucleus of girls that came in with a good attitude. Webb may have lost four of its better scorers, but the best one is back. Senior guard Starr Jones averaged 11.3 points last season and earned a reputation for good defensive play. “She does ever ything for us,” said L yons. “She’ll be the catalyst of this team. She’s the leader.” Nakiyah Bullock made great strides as a freshman last season, especially near the end of the season as her performances helped lift

The “light at the end of the tunnel” for Baskett last season was the emergence of freshmen Kris Haywood, James Alexander and Jeffrey Jones. Haywood started at point guard and Alexander and Jones are post players. Haywood is taller and thicker and could slot into a small forward position with fellow all-conference honorable mention selection Tavin Moore, a senior, taking over at point guard. Baskett said Haywood is a leader and wants the ball in his hands with the game on the line. Haywood’s classmate Alexander is the leader in the post at 6 feet-3 inches. “I think he’s just an
untapped talent,” Baskett said of Alexander. “The sky is the limit for how good he could end up being.” Jones and Dontavious Richards are each about 6-feet-5. Richards and Haywood each play football and were expected to join the basketball team this week with the Vikings’ gridiron season now in the books. Baskett said how the Vikings perform defensively will be a key this season, adding that he sees some potential in the senior class outside of Moore. Northern coach Crews: We’re getting there

Bullock’s role is expanding. “We’re going to still ask her to score,” said L yons. “But we’re going to ask her to do a little bit more on the offensive end.” That means Bullock will get some “on-the-job training” at point guard. L yons, who wants to play at a fast pace, said freshman Anna Freuler may be the best shooter he’s seen in his time at Webb. “She has a great basketball IQ,” said L yons. “She’s definitely going to play a lot of minutes for us.” Webb has some height down low with sophomore returner Jasmine Sneed and Southern Vance transfer Alyssa Wilkins. Each player measures in at around 6-feet-1 and is expected to start. But no player is ensured a starting role. orthern Vance head coach Wilton Baskett said part of coaching is figuring out how to get the best use out of your talent. Baskett has some talent, but he still has some figuring out to do. The solution may be one that leaves Northern looking more like its crosstown rival when former Southern Vance head coach Mike Rotolo was leading the Runnin’ Raiders. “It’s not going to look like Northern Vance,” said Baskett. “I think we’re going to have to be the Runnin’ Vikings.” That means a switch out of Baskett’s patented 1-3-1 zone defense and flex offense. Baskett said the zone won’t work with what he deems a lack of size, adding that he may have four guards on the court at once. Northern has missed out on the state playoffs in each of the last three seasons and is coming off a 4-17 campaign. Gone from that squad is leading scorer Le’Darius Brandon, a graduated shooting guard. Baskett noted that he’s had two other four-win campaigns in his tenure at Northern. Each was followed the next season by a conference title. “Is that going to happen this year? I don’t know,” said Baskett. “But that’s my goal. I think we have one of the toughest basketball conferences in the state of North Carolina.” Baskett added that he thinks the race for a title in the 3-A Big Eight Conference, which features 2013 state champion J.F.

The lefty has proven to be a good ballhander and steady shooter from long distance in addition to being able to create his own shot. Middle school call-up Conner Br yant is charged with the task of replacing Reeves at point. “He’s smart,” Cooper said of Br yant. “He’s got a basketball mind, a future coach, just loves the game. Any time the gym is open, he’s in there getting shots up.” Cooper added Sal Brown could be a surprise contributor this season. He played both varsity and junior varsity last season. The Colts will tr y to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish in the ultra-competitive Carolina Christian Conference. “They have a ton of a potential,” Cooper said of his Colts. “They really could do some good things this year. So we’re excited. We’re anxious to get started.”
A blend of promising youth and experience has head coach Joseph Cooper excited about his Crossroads Christian boys team. The Colts have four seniors a season after having none at all. Holden Hedgepeth, Reid Sudheimer and Ben Paul are each back from last season and David Ellis transferred back to Crossroads from Franklin Academy. Hedgepeth averaged about 15 points last season and was second in scoring to freshman point guard Zach Reeves, who transferred to the prestigious Christ School program near Asheville. The Colts have one junior, four sophomores and three freshmen. The junior is Zack Norris, a 6-foot7 Wakefield High School transfer. “He’s really going to anchor our defense,” said Cooper. “He’s a shot blocker, rebounder. He’s got some post moves. He’s a little bit raw, but he’s going to continue to develop. Collective effort needed to replace star player By KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF
Crossroads Christian no longer has a player like Jessi Hayes who can completely take over a game. But second-year head coach Dana LaBerge is expecting a more balanced scoring effort to help the Colts continue the progression that began last season. “She was a tremendous player, scored 20 points a game for us,” LaBerge said of Hayes. “So what I told them is that we just have to have individuals step up. We need to have five have four more points a game, have four have five more points a game. Give a collective ef for t to get the points that she brought us.” Post player Caroline May is the only senior back and she is joined by three juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen. LaBerge said May will be the leader this season. “Her and Jessi were
right there together, constantly talking and encouraging girls,” LaBerge said of May last season. “So she’s a very vocal leader and she puts it into practice with her hustle and the way she plays on the court.” Jessi’s sister, Ashton Hayes, is expected to start at point guard after an impressive freshman campaign. LaBaerge said Ashton has steadily improved since the end of last season. “It was an adventure when she got in the game,” LaBerge said. “You never knew what was going to happen. By the end of the season, I couldn’t wait to get her in just because of her effort and defensively, she just buckles down.” Michaela Nicholas is back and competing for a starting job and Sullivan Smith, Jordan Campbell and Amber Peoples are each expected to play in the post.

coached from one season to the next and praised his upgraded jump shot along with his lock-down defense. “Last year, he was a little inconsistent and his minutes were inconsistent,” said Carrier. “This year, he’s really taken a leadership role and has really worked hard all summer and all fall.” Hunt, David Huf f and Jor dan Coghill are the only juniors. The rest are underclassmen and the Spartans won’t have a junior varsity team this season. Carrier said once the team gets more experienced, it could surprise some people as KVA makes the drop to Class 1-A of the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association. The Spar tans are one of two 1-A teams, alongside Halifax Academy, in the eight-team Eastern Plains league. “I think we have some pieces,” said Car rier. “We’re kind of small and we really need to play scrappy. The thing I like about this team is ever y day in practice, we see them get just a little bit better.”

Kerr-Vance lost 11 of 13 players off a team that finished 19-6 and tied for first in the Eastern Plains Independent Conference. “Luckily, the two players I have back are really good,” said KVA head coach Dave Carrier. Those two are lone senior Derrian Markham and junior R.J. Hunt, both guards. Hunt averaged 18 points last season and has drawn interest from Division I programs including Holy Cross, Wofford, Elon, and VCU. ing we can take that and continue it this season and get a little more success out of it.” Sophia Naradzay and Macy Lee John son are also returning and expected to see an increased role for the Spar tans, who should feature more depth this season with 10 players on the roster. KVA lost two senior captains from last season. “So far we’ve had really strong senior leadership from Rebecca Ross and Price Wester,” said Russell. “They’ve stepped up and they’re really working hard and doing a good job.”
The Spar tans played in a tough Easter n Plains Independent Conference last season that put three teams in the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association Class 2-A tourney. KVA, which drops to 1-A this season, was competitive with some of the better teams in 2-A a season ago. “These kids play hard,” said Russell. “They’re tough. Eagles aren’t short on athletes, shooters

arren County is missing one key piece from last season, but returning nearly everyone else from a team that finished third in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference before first-round elimination in the state playoffs. Daniel Hunter, the former 6-foot-8 center, leaves a big hole in the paint, but he’s the only starter head coach Wanda Thompson has to replace. Senior shooting guard Charlie Williams led the team in scoring with an average of 13.3 points. He’s back along with A.J. Alston, Justin Fitts and point guard Tyler Thompson. Jaylen Jones and Dennis Waddell are also back after earning some starts last season. Alston, a junior, averaged 7.5 points, 1.3 blocks and seven rebounds last season and the athletic for ward has bulked up, adding some muscle to his 6-foot-3 frame. “He’s ver y aggressive,” said Wanda Thompson. “He’s been working hard in the offseason. We have to keep him out of foul trouble and on the floor. His vertical is just unbelievable. He’s just a tremendous force.” Wanda’s son, Tyler, and Williams, form a potent backcourt force. Both players are quick with the ball and deadly shooters from downtown. “Tyler’s range is not at the 3-point line,” said Wanda Thompson. “He can go four or five feet behind the 3-point line. When you have to come out and guard somebody like that, that opens up the inside a whole lot more.” Then there’s Fitts, who can play any position on the floor. The 6-foot-3 senior became the Eagles’ most versatile scorer as a sophomore before missing much of his junior season with an injur y. “He sees the floor well,” Wanda Thompson said. “He distributes the ball well. We’re expecting big things from him. He’s a leader on the court.”

The concepts aren’t changing at Warren County, but the product is going to look a little different as the Eagles aim for their third consecutive state playoff berth. Warren County lost five seniors from last season and returns one starter, senior point guard Alexis French. Forward Sierra Hicks also started some games last season. talent,” said Eagles’ head coach Shannon Jones. “I don’t really know what to expect. I feel like we’re going to be successful. A team full of freshmen and sophomores that don’t have a lot of experience on this level, so you never know what you’re going to get.” Warren County got fourth place in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference last season before exiting in the first round of the playoffs. The Eagles are missing most of their post players from that team. Sierra Hicks, Destiny Hicks and Samarie Lynch are
among the players competing for time in the post. “I have different players so we’re going to change it up a little bit,” Jones said of style of play. “We’re still going to pretty much do the same thing. But it’s going to look different.” Jones said French has taken over as the team’s leader, but the Eagles’ head coach expects the scoring to be evenly distributed. “Everybody can score on this team,” she said. omething special could be brewing for the Southern Vance girls. Head coach Amy Simpson wasn’t explicit about the type of goals the team has set, but it’s obvious the Raiders’ expectations are high with a couple of big-time additions joining several returners. Senior point guard Breona Jones leads that group of returners. “I’ve been seeing a great deal of focus in practice,” said Simpson. “They’ve been encouraging each other, trying to pull each other up. You can just tell they kind of know they want to go get it this year. They know that this year is probably the best chance to go after it.” “It” could be a conference championship, a deep run in the state playoffs or even a state title. Is the talent there for all three? The Raiders, having dropped to the 2-A classification, won’t have to worry about Chapel Hill anymore. Chapel Hill finished 30-2 last season, dominating the 3-A Carolina Conference on their to an appearance in the state final. Most of the Tigers’ key performers are expected to be back. Jones suffered an injury against Chapel Hill in last season’s conference tournament championship, forcing her to miss Southern’s first round state playoff game against Eastern Guilford. The Raiders, who finished 20-7, lost the game 62-27. “Her ballhandling, her scoring, just being a leader on the team,” Simpson said of Jones’ importance. “I think she brings a lot to the team.” Jones averaged 15 points, five assists and five steals last season on her way to reaching 1,000 career points. She’s joined in the backcourt this season by freshman Carrington Matias. Matias was a starting point guard at Kerr-Vance as a seventh-grader and missed last season there because of an

The new Southern Vance head coach will have to wait until the Raider football team is finished in the state playoffs to get a better gauge on his team. The only returning basketball players are Ty-Traveon Roberts, Shawn Henderson, Qualik Shearin, and Jeremiah Williams. Each of the seniors plays a key role on the football squad. Greg Ackles, a 32-year-old New Jersey native, succeeds Torrey Nowell, who led the Southern program for one season. Ackles previously served as an assistant coach for the Lakeland High School varsity team in Suffolk, Va. in addition to serving as a junior

The Victor y Christian boys have won a conference championship in three of the last five seasons including a sweep of the regular season and league tourney title last season. Rev. Ricky Easter is the new head coach and hopes to continue that trend of success. “I’m expecting a good season,” said Easter, the Victor y Baptist Church pastor. “I would love to see another championship season, but if we don’t win the championship — whatever these guys do — I know they’ll work hard at it and be pleased.” Victor y lost one senior, go-to scorer Jeremy Florence, and two more players transferred to other schools. Christian Bowes and Waverly Saunders
are the returning seniors and Easter is looking to Bowes and Wesley Whitley, especially, for scoring. “I’m hoping those boys will step up,” said Easter. Sophomores Max Blackwell and Austin Abbott are expected to play in the post and Easter expects a balanced offensive attack. “I think we’re going to have some good strength on the inside and we’ve got a couple of good shooters on the outside,” said Easter. Easter added he’d like to see the program advance as well it has the past few years. Will it be enough for a run at back-to-back titles? “We’re wanting to push towards that again,” he said. Webb defender. injury. “I look at it as a blessing,” Simpson said of having two point guards. “Either one of them can bring the ball down the court. If one gets it, the other can be filling in on the wing.” Kiyanna Kearney, Mikayla Sellers, Rashyda Burwell, Brittany West, Brielle Barrow, Canaan Dale, Shiquasha Williams, Kijana Jones and Cordecia Southerland are each returning. A new face should bolster Southern’s post presence. Versatile senior Kechae Parker transferred from Northern Vance after averaging 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in her junior a season as a Viking. Simpson expects the scoring to be evenly spread and the tempo to be pushed. Roberts’ ability to finish at the rim made him one of the most exciting players in the area to watch last season as he averaged 14 points and seven rebounds. “He’s just a pure athlete,” said Ackles. “I can just say, ‘Hey, go get me 12 rebounds.’ I don’t have to coach him to do that. He can do that on his own. But just trying to clean up his offensive game a little bit and try to give him
some fundamentals on defense so he can raise his game up a little bit.” Ackles expects an upperclassmen-heavy team to run his fast-paced offense. “I definitely want to play fast,” said Ackles. “I want as many possessions as possible over the course of the game. I want to play just strong, solid defense and make teams work.” Henderson and Shearin will battle for the starting point guard job. Some players moving up from junior varsity are expected to make an impact, including Darius Kearney, who Ackles sees being a “sleeper” off the bench. Northern’s Bobbitt shooting for states

Nor thern Vance has some rebuilding to do after losing 11 seniors while second-year head coach Jack Long continues his efforts to make swimming a more popular sport with Southern Vance students. Nor thern and Southern no longer compete in the same conference. The Vikings are in the refurbished 3-A Big Eight Conference while the Raiders dropped down to the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference. There’s no more Cardinal Gibbons or Chapel Hill for Long and Southern to
compete against. But those strong programs have been replaced by Durham School of the Ar ts and N.C. School of Science and Math, joining longtime league power Roanoke Rapids. “They have people that are on teams and clubs and stuff like that,” Long said of the new Northern Carolina members. “Our kids are recreational swimmers. I’m trying to give them a chance to participate in a sport that you can do the rest of your life.” Long lost three seniors and has 17 total swimmers with a close-to-even mix of boys and girls.
Larger numbers than last season mean Southern should be able to be more competitive as a team by gaining more points in the relay races. Long is looking to returner Matthew Woodlief to lead the boys. “He’s looking at distance,” said Long. “He’s also looking to work on his butterfly. He’s a good-sized kid as far as height. He’s not real muscular. He’s a little wiry. I think the distance and the butterfly are going to be good events for him to expand his repertoire.” Nikki Henderson and Sarah Stanton are expected to be two of the girls’ top
per formers. Henderson was last a member of the team in 2011-12 while Stanton, still recovering from an injury, tries to get back to 100 percent. Madison Bobbitt and Clayton Harris are the only seniors at Northern and two of 24 swimmers with an even mix of boys and girls. “They both bring a whole lot of leadership,” said Northern head coach Natasha Rubin. “Madison brings not only leadership, but experience.” Bobbitt has qualified for the state regionals in each of her three seasons in the program. Rubin’s goal for Bobbitt,
who qualified in the 100 fly and 500 free for the 2013 regionals, is a berth in the state championships. Harris is in his second year with the Vikings’ program. “Clayton brings a lot of energy and he’s very positive,” said Rubin. “He can be a comedian when you need him to be and also a positive reinforcer when that we need.” Harris, Cody Parrish, Evan Lower y, and Ray Cheever each qualified for the regionals last season in different relays. Cheever, a junior, made it in the 100 backstroke following his school-record
performance in that event earlier in the season. Lowery just missed out on qualifying for the regionals in the 100 and 50 free. Rubin also expects Parrish to contend for a regional berth in the individual medley and for Stanton Parham to have a shot at a regional consideration breaststroke time.
