As the whipping winds of March subside into the beauty of spring, Vance County tourism will begin to hit its blooming stage. It’s an annual rite, an area flush with many attractions that are year-round getting bolstered like many other regions in the state by spring and summer travelers. Kerr Lake is remains our showpiece, a center for water-related activities, but there’s so much more to our place on the map. History is prevalent in many areas of our community. The Hen-

derson Institute Historical Museum has memories of high school state champions, leaders of the community and a true connection to the surrounding black community. The downtown historic district is listed in the National Register of Historic Sites, and includes a self-guided walking tour. Driving through the county on a tour of historic sites is also possible. In fact, getting outside of the city just a mile or so can lead to one of the true links to the glorious past. The Raleigh Road Outdoor

Theatre originally opened as the Moon-Glo back in 1949. Showtime is still about dusk, and the theater awakened from a winter hibernation earlier this month with fresh releases, including the “Safe Haven” film based on North Carolina novelist Nicholas Sparks and filmed in Wilmington. Area churches and cemeteries dot our landscape. So do specialty stores not linked to any national chains. Whether it is a wood artisan and quilt maker, handmade see

For tourists, Kerr Lake frequently leads off the conversation THE DISPATCH STAFF

When it comes to tourism and Vance County, the conversation starts with Kerr Lake. It is the largest manmade lake east of the Mississippi River, built in the 1950s as a means of flood control for eastern North Carolina through the John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir. The byproduct of the environmental structure, which has more than 850 miles of shoreline fingering its way along the Virginia state line, is one of North Carolina’s largest parks

and tourist attractions. On the North Carolina side are 10 boat launch points, nine of which are in Vance County. Another is just over the county line in Warren. Within the seven state parks are more than 700 campsites. Picnic tables, fire pits, tent pads, modern rest rooms and hot showers are the norm, not the exception. Electric and water hookups are available. If fishing is the game, largemouth and striped bass await, as well as catfish and crappies. Fishing tournaments

and sailing competitions abound, starting in April and running through the fall. Personal watercraft are plentiful. Swimming areas are everywhere, including a designated spot. And throughout the lake area are plenty of help for the stay, with marinas stocked with equipment, fuel and the means for most repairs. Kerr Lake is a jewel, with shining water that ranks among the top three attractions visited annually by those going to state parks. Jockey’s see
