There may be some debate on which school has the best team entering the season, but the most complete player isn’t in question. That distinction goes to J.F. Webb junior Abbey Smith, who is expected to join the short list of TriCounty products to play collegiate soccer. A look at five things to watch in soccer:

• Head coach: Brandi Breinig, second season. • Leaders: Sarah Stanton, Tanya Zuniga (midfielder), Mary Key Medoza (goalkeeper), Nikki Henderson (midfielder), Brianna Escobar (midfielder), Cristal Sandoval (freshman forward). • Notes: graduated two players. • Coach Breinig: “We’re hoping that we can hold our own this year and win a few games.”

CROSSROADS CHRISTIAN

• Head coach: Joshua Bogle, third season. • Leaders: Caroline May (senior forward), Ali Arnold (senior center back), Madison Moyer (eighth-grader). • Makeup: May, Arnold only upperclassmen... graduated several players. • Coach Bogle: “I think we’ll be really competitive. If the girls decide to step up and want it, I don’t see why they can’t walk away with at least a winning season.”

Numbers down, hopes high Delbridge returns to old stomping ground

Turnouts haven’t been great for tennis. How schools are dealing with a numbers shortage is one of three things to watch:

NUMBERS GAME

Near the end of preseason, J.F. Webb and Warren County tied for the most players on a roster with eight. A lack of numbers h i n d e r e d K e r r - Va n c e last season. Early on, the Spartans were expecting six this season. But despite having only four in its season opener, KVA pulled out a 5-4 win at Warren County. Nor ther n had the strongest team in the area last season, but lost several players to graduation. Jef f Ar thurs, the team’s former head coach, is now the school’s athletic director and a familiar face has taken his place.

‘COACH FOR HIRE’

Ar thurs jokingly told Hilda Delbridge she was a “coach for hire.” Delbridge, the former Vance Senior High girls coach, accepted the position less than a week before the star t of the season. The Vikings were in a tough spot before a previously hesitant Delbridge stepped in. The Vance County

coaching veteran had never coached a high school boys team before. “They said, ‘Coach Delbridge, we want a team. We want to play. We’re glad you’re here,’” Delbridge said of a meeting with the cur r ent Nor thern players. “And then we got on the court.” The Vikings and Warriors have their work cut out for them, as usual, in a tough conference.

DATES WITH THE CHAMPS

No matter the name of the conference, there’s a great chance Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill are going to control it. The 3-A Carolina Conference morphs into the Big Eight this season and reigning state champion Gibbons is the frontrunner for the inaugural title. The Crusaders finished unbeaten last season, losing only one set in the 3-A dual team playoffs. They also boast UNC recruit Robert Kelly, the reigning 3-A singles champion. Darden’s goals aren’t necessarily results-oriented. “I hope they can enjoy it,” said Darden. “I hope they like coming to practice. I hope they like tennis when it’s over with in April. If they say they got a little better, and they enjoyed playing — I’m good.”

Down in 2-A, Southern and Warren County’s Nor thern Carolina Conference welcomes a pair of strong programs in Durham School of the Ar ts and N.C. School of Science and Math. NCSSM has appeared in three of the last four 1-A dual team state finals. The Unicorns claimed a title in 2008. KVA competes in N.C. Independent School Athletic Association Class 1-A

on the state level, but has to contend with reigning 2-A champion St. David’s in the Easter n Plains Independent Conference. Rocky Mount Academy also made the 2-A semifinals. Rebuilding is in store for the softball teams at Nor ther n Vance, J.F. Webb and Warren County. That won’t be the case at Southern Vance, where the Raiders are loaded with talent and experience. A look at five things to watch in softball:

The top of Souther n’s batting order should again be painful for opposing pitchers to counteract. Kiyanna Kearney, Rashyda Bur well, Brittany West, Megan Hight — It’s hard to imagine a more potent four-pack than that in the region. Mikayla Sellers and West Bladen transfer Kristen Dickerson join Kear ney, Bur well and Hight in the ultra-talented senior class. “This year, there’s high expectations for them of course,” said Southern head coach Leann Harrell. “We do know that this is a talented team, but they have to prove themselves each and every game.” Per haps no player has more to prove than the new starting pitcher, sophomore Brittany West.

‘HERE COMES CAROLINA’

Of course, West isn’t a novice. She was a standout freshman infielder and backup pitcher last season. West also made the transition to pitcher for her Johnston County Clippers summer showcase team and verbally committed to North Carolina in the fall. “I’m all in,” said West, who was recr uited to UNC as a pitcher. “I’ve talked to the coaches and we have a pretty

I’m all in and they’re all in I guess.” Even with an experienced group of seniors, Har rell is counting on West to take a leadership r ole. She’ll also shoulder the bulk of the pitches with no clear-cut backup established. “I think she definitely can handle the pressure,” said Harrell. “We’re just going pitch by pitch.”

QUADRUPLE TROUBLE

Pitching depth won’t be a problem at Warren County. The Eagles should also continue to lead the league in siblings. T wins Kassie and Kelsie Clar y are the team’s only seniors. Samantha and Kelly Nor wood, also twins, are back as sophomores. Kassie Clar y and Kelly Nor wood will each see time on the mound, as will freshman Brittany Pitzing. “We have three pretty good, consistent pitchers,” said Warren County head coach Shannon Jones. War ren County has been a consistent state playoff team for the last several seasons. Mak-

ing the postseason will again be the goal for the young Eagles in the revamped 2-A Nor thern Carolina Conference.

CONFERENCE SHAKEDOWN

The Vikings are going the co-coaching route. Keyachtta Hawkins and Annie Machamer lead Nor ther n along with assistant Meredith Thompson, who is helping the pitchers. The V ikings’ No. 1 pitcher was still up for grabs in the early stages of the season, although freshman Megan Andr ews has showed promise. She’ll also play in the infield. “Anything you give her, she goes har d,” Machamer said of Andrews. Katie McAllister also figures in as a utility player and freshman third baseman Kayleigh Spencer has shown poise at the plate. “She’s only a freshman and we’ve seen so much improvement from her,” Machamer said of Spencer. Machamer and Hawkins are hoping for improvement throughout the squad as the Vikings build for the future.

The NCC features South Granville, which lost in the 2-A state final last season. The Vikings also lost some players, but retur n an all-state second baseman and catcher. The subtraction of Souther n should open up the competition in the refurbished 3-A Big Eight Conference. The Raiders finished second to Orange last season in the 3-A Carolina league. The Panthers and Cardinal Gibbons each return all-state pitchers.
