err Lake Park Watch co-founder Frank Timberlake said visitors should come ready to enjoy the water this year. “Bring your coolers, drinks, food, folding chairs, swimsuits and towels, and for God’s sake don’t forget the sunscreen,” he said. Activities at the lake’s recreation sites include fishing, camping and hiking, but Timberlake said the water is the main attraction. “Kerr Lake is the draw,” he said. “The main thrust of everything is the water and the activities that can be done near the water.” The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation and

its partners operate seven recreation sites and two marinas on Kerr Lake, each containing at least one boating access ramp. Boaters have 24-hour access to Kerr Lake’s waters at four locations. The recreation area at Nutbush Bridge, located on Jack Wade Farm Lane, Henderson, has two 24-hour boat ramps operated by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission operates three 24-hour boating ramps, as well: one at the County Line camp area on County Line Park Road, Manson, another at Henderson Point on Reverend Henderson Road, Henderson, and Hibernia located on Hibernia Road,

Henderson. Other access sites offer boating ramps are not available after recreation site’s hours of operation: • Bullocksville located on Bullocksville Park Road, Manson; • Satterwhite Point on Satterwhite Point Road, Henderson; and • Kimball Point on Kimball Point Road, Manson. J.C. Cooper Campground at Satterwhite Point offers a boat ramp and courtesy dock for campers only. Boating services offer gas and repair along the lake, accompanied by retail stores and restaurants. Anyone looking for boat rental can find it at the Satterwhite and Steele Creek marinas. “We are really excited,” Satterwhite Point Marina manager Catherine Hughes said. “It’s great to see weather changing. We have gotten about 300 boats ready so far and will probably see more boats turn out for Memorial Day.” This year, Hughes

Mike Maynard hooks his boat up to leave from the Nutbush Bridge access boat ramp at Kerr Lake. Maynard visits the lake about once every two months and on this trip caught a handful of largemouth bass in the six hours he spent on the lake.

state parks, only six surpassed the million mark in visitors. Kerr Lake Recreation Area is a wildlife preserve. Visitors are prohibited from removing or injuring plant life or minerals unless it has been approved for scientific or educational purposes. Hunting, trapping,

shooting, molesting or feeding birds and animals are also prohibited — as much to protect humans as animals. “The lakes are a travel corridor for black bears,” Greg Bates, wildlife biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, said. “You’ll see large animals like black bears crossing through Warren and Vance counties because of the lakes.” To make sure visitors to Kerr Lake can enjoy the surroundings to the fullest, a number of organizations work together to enhance and protect the environment. Bryce Fleming, superintendent of North Carolina’s seven Kerr Lake recreation areas, said park staff have renovated two campsites to make them more useful to campers and to reduce erosion. Rangers carry out a variety of activities related to the environment. As a contribution to the natural resources database, staff have identified 763 species of plants and animals in and around the lake,

Fleming said, and conducts a bird count three times a year. “We’ve conducted more than 250 educational programs in the past year,” he said. The Roanoke River Basin Association actively enhances the lake facilities and protects the environment. “We have a wounded warrior launch site above the dam,” Gene Addesso, president of the association, said. The site was built to allow individuals with handicaps launch canoes or kayaks more easily. “In regard to preservation, we have opposed inter-basin transfers that can have a negative effect on the ecosystem,” Addesso said. “The hot issues include our opposition to uranium mining in south-side Virginia. That could be worse than the coal ash spill. With uranium, you don’t clean it up. You close up.” The association is one of several monitoring the response to a Feb. 2 coal ash spill from a Duke Energy basin into the Dan River. Based on samples taken from Kerr Lake

in early April, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency stated that contaminants found in the samples do not indicate the presence of coal ash and may be from another source. In recent years, Kerr Lake has been invaded by hydrilla, an aquatic plant that multiplies rapidly and can drive out native plants that are beneficial to the aquatic ecosystem. To deal with the problem, Fleming said, “We’ll be treating areas where hydrilla interferes with swimming areas, boat ramps and campsites.” Contact the writer at dirvine@ hendersondispatch.com.

Kerr Lake offers plenty for sailing enthusiasts By Danielle Hairston

ey points of Kerr Lake offer expansive bodies of water and prevailing winds perfect for a sailboat cruise or race around the shore. The County Line, Henderson Point and Kimball Point recreation areas have deep boat ramps for small boats, while marinas at Steele Creek and Satter white Point offer big boat docking. The Carolina Sailing Club uses Henderson Point recreation area to offer sailboat racing, training and crew opportunities for anyone that wishes to get involved, whether a boat owner or not. “They can visit the website,” Carolina Club equipment manager Tom Wille said. “There are names and contact information there. Then we can get a hold of them to see if we can

Its website is carolinasailingclub.org. Its most famous regatta — the Governor’s Cup — is in June. More than 65 sailboat owners from across the East Coast come to Henderson Point for a full day of racing.

Wille said the regatta is a highlight of the year. “I think because I am a competitor and my daughter is the crew, I really enjoy it,” Wille said. On the other side of Henderson, one can see big boats, too. Wille said he is a member of a club at Steele Creek Marina, too. The Steele Creek Yacht Club is a social organization that meets on the water or at the docks about two times each month from spring to fall.

Wille said the groups are different. Carolina Sailing Clubs primar y focuses is racing and training, while Steel Creek Yacht Club is a social organization. He said he uses both clubs for different occasions. “Racing at Henderson Point is a good thing to do with my daughter,” Wille said. “It’s a lot of fun, but when I go sailing on the big boat with my wife it’s a lot of fun, too.” Contact the writer at dhairston@ hendersondispatch.com

oaters and swimmers who find themselves in need of assistance on Kerr Lake have several ways to seek help. Maj. Chris Huebner, of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, said the agency responds to medical and other emergencies that happen on the lake. “If there is a missing person or boating accident on the water, we would be the preferred person to call,” he said. “But if it was a medical emergency on land that doesn’t involve a boating accident, it would be better to call 911.” Lake visitors must report boating accidents on public waters to the N.C.
