With the condition of the U.S. economy over the last few years, many companies have downsized leaving many highly qualified people unemployed. A growing trend for that segment of the population is in starting their own businesses. The Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center offers assistance for such small business start-ups as well as existing small businesses. The small business center was created to provide the small businesses of the community with a focal point for training, education, counseling and referral. It addresses the continuing need for updated information, refinement of management skills and the improvement of profit advantage in risk-taking. Special attention is given to the critical areas of capital formation and prevention of business failures. The small business center program offerings and services include the following: • Seminars and short courses designed to provide small business owners, managers and employees with updated information on various business topics. • Counseling services to new and existing small businesses provided by small

Small Business Administration offers resources to educate small business The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Affordable Care Act or ACA) will be enacted in roll-out phases over the course of 2013 and 2014. To learn what the law means for your small business, the U. S. Small Business Administration has broken things down on their website by category and employer size. Depending on whether you are self-employed, an employer with fewer than 25 employees, an employer with fewer than 50 employees, or an employer with 50 or more employees, different provisions of the Affordable Care Act may apply to you. The information found in these articles will help small businesses learn about the key provisions of the Affordable Care Act based on the size of

their business. Various areas addressed there are, key provisions, a glossary of key terms, a timeline of roll-out phases, the full text of the act and its regulations and a link for statespecific information. Regulations and guidance are used to implement many of the Affordable Care Act provisions that address both private and public health insurance. Many of these can be found at healthcare.gov. The Internal Revenue Service is responsible for tax provisions of the Affordable Care Act that will be implemented during the next several years. You can find a list of provisions now in effect, with periodic updates, from the IRS. Every state will have an Af-

fordable Insurance Exchange, or marketplace, beginning in January 2014. States have the option of running their own marketplace, partnering with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to partially run the marketplace, or opting for a marketplace run by the agency. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have chosen to establish their own marketplace and, seven additional states have opted to partner with the federal government to establish a marketplace. To view all state-based marketplace websites, visit healthcare.gov/marketplace/about/ state-marketplace/index.html. To view the various articles on the administration’s website, go to sba.gov/healthcare#.
