With more than 800 miles of shoreline and 50,000 acres of clean water, Kerr Lake is beautiful. Between Kerr Lake’s 11 parks and recreational sites, Vance County offers a variety of lake services, from public boat launching to fishing to camping and picnicking. Although Kerr Lake is man-made, Catherine Hughes, wife of Satterwhite Point Marina’s owner Kevin Scott Hughes, said, “It’s a

relatively undiscovered lake.” She went on to say, “People who come out here have an appreciation for the scenic beauty.” Currently there is no admission fee to the lake on the weekdays. However, after Memorial Day there will be a daily fee of $6 per car. Seniors will be charged $4. According to Nancy Wilson, director of the Vance County Department of Tourism, boating related activities are popular on the lake.

Boats towing tubes, skiers and knee-boarders are frequently seen. “One can sail or motor boat for miles and miles and see nothing but Mother Nature,” Wilson said. Wilson has also noticed an increased interest in canoeing and kayaking last summer. Two marinas sit directly on the lake: Satterwhite Point Marina and Steele Creek Marina. Both provide boat docking, mooring, motor fuel and oil. However, Satterwhite Point Marina has a conve-

Satterwhite Point Marina also rents out two fully-furnished overnight cabins complete with boat docks that can hold up to eight occupants. Hughes warned that the cabins are booked three seasons out of the year: spring, summer and fall. This year she began receiving reservations in January. In addition to the the marina’s cabins there are more than 700 campsites around the lake that are open to the public. Seven out of the 11 parks have access to electricity and water at campsites and nine parks even have flushing toilets available. Eight of the parks have tent and trailer camping options as well as public picnic areas. According to the main office of Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, across from the entrance to Satterwhite Point, there is a variety of wildlife that can be seen while camping and the fishing is one of the best on the East Coast. If Vance County was without the lake, Wilson said, “We would be OK but we wouldn’t see the campers or the boaters or the fishermen.” The Vance County Department of Tourism has a website that details many of the attributes of Kerr Lake at kerrlake-nc.com. With

areas to swim, fish, camp and boat there is plenty to do at Kerr Lake. “So,” Wilson said with a smile, “why wouldn’t it be a place people would want to visit?”

Reciprocality: Vance County affects tourism, vice versa BY ALLIE OUTHOUSE DISPATCH INTERN

Vance County has a lot to offer visitors in the way of recreation. It boasts historic sites, Kerr Lake, nine shopping centers, 66 restaurants and plenty of activity places for the children. Because Vance County has so much to offer, Vance County Department of Tourism markets the area in printed ads and pamphlets as well as on TV and radio. Nancy Wilson, executive director and events promoter of the department, sends tourism pamphlets out across the country, especially to Maryland because they have both the capability and the desire to vacation in Vance County. “I got 279 responses from one ad, that’s not

including the emails,” Wilson said. Many tourists are scheduled business and leisure travelers and vacationers but Vance County attracts a lot of impulse visitors because of its location along Interstate 85. “They just come from

everywhere and we welcome all the visitors,” Wilson said. She said the county and all of its businesses

benefits from tourism. “Tourists generate new dollars that didn’t cost the county anything,” Wilson said.

According to Wilson, if someone outside the county spends a dollar inside the county, there are no additional costs attached to that dollar. However, county citizens who spend their money within the county are just recycling it through county coffers. Tourists dollars are what Wilson calls “disposable income.” According to the Hen-

derson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce, tourism generated $41.76 million in 2010, showing that it was up 7.08 percent from the previous year. Stuart Litvin, director of the Henderson-Vance County Economic Development Commission, said tourism is a positive impact. “More visitors means more need for business-

According to Litvin, tourism increases Vance County’s ability to attract retailers and businesses to this area, which in turn adds to the quality of life that Vance County promotes to even more attractive companies. Litvin explained that citizens can also promote tourism by discussing the highlights of Vance County where ever they go. “Because you never know who you’re talking to,” Litvin said. Car show, July 4 events biggest draws for tourists BY ALLIE OUTHOUSE DISPATCH INTERN

Out of all of the attractions that Vance County holds, the two largest are the Show, Shine, Shag & Drive in the fall and the Independence Day Weekend Celebration in July. These events are both successful, annual events hosted by the Vance County Department of Tourism. Nancy Wilson, director of the department, confirmed that both events will have live beach and Carolina shag dance music in addition to traditional oldies when they return this year. The Independence Day celebration, traditionally on a Saturday and this year falling on July 6, will last from 6:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at Sat-

terwhite Point on Kerr Lake. The event includes fireworks. Wilson pointed out that events such as these create spinoffs to help others. For example, non-profit vendors have been invited to the July Fourth celebration to give them a chance to make some money. Food vendors will also be attending. T-shirts, glow sticks and other items will be available for purchase. Although the event is free and open to the public, no alcohol will be allowed. Attendees are encouraged to bring something to sit on. Wilson said about 30,000 people attended last year’s Independence Day celebration.

Spectators take in the variety of cars along Garnett Street during Show, Shine, Shag & Dine.

The Show, Shine, Shag and Dine is a 1976 and older antique, classic and nostalgia car show taking place over three days. All the aspects are related to the time period between the 1950s and 1970s. “They just like to drive,” Wilson said.

“They get to see a new town, hang out and talk about cars.” From 1 p.m to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18,

participants will arrive at Satterwhite Point, eat southern-style barbecue and drive around town. According to Wilson,

participants will be coming in and out all day. Some of the drag racers will even arrive on Thursday. “Many of them are retired and look forward to seeing people they haven’t seen in 40 years,” explained Wilson. The following morning, registration begins at 7:30 a.m on Garnett Street in downtown Henderson. Only cars

from 1976 and older are allowed in the show area. Racers, collectors and vendors for car-related items and food will converge in the heart of downtown, capped by a judging in several categories. On Sunday, the 12th annual East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame and Reunion 2013 will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center. This free and open event provides the opportunity to meet drag race legends from 1950s through the 1970s. The induction ceremony begins at 12:30. Inductees include the Golden Commandos Racing Team (Plymouth Rac-

ing Division) and Blue Angels Hot Rod Club of Massillon, Ohio, a group formed in 1952, and championship winner Ray Price, owner of both Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and Ray Price Triumph in Raleigh. All have been invited to attend. Golden Commandos members include Carl Anderson, Warren Anderson, Eugene Carrico, John Dallafior, Evan Ericson, Donald Ernst, Jim Hall, Ray Kobe, Herman Mozer, Gene Meyers, Forrest Pitcock, Troy Simonsen and Walter Ulrich. Because the Dodge division was honored two years ago, an effort was made this to honor the

Kerr Lake Plymouth division. Blue Angels Hot Rod Club members include Harold “Smiitty” Smith, Dave Koffel, John Popovich, Glenn Mauger, Bill Hoover, Ralph Henson, William (Bill) Mauger and Gerald (Jerry) McAvienue. Back in the 1950s, this club gave people a safe place to race away from the streets. They also created a twin engine dragster which has been recreated and will be in town during the event. Posthumous awards will be awarded to Carrico, Dallafior, Henson, Hoover and Meyers. In addition more than 50 awards will be presented to participants. The master of ceremony

When it comes to downtown, Henderson is rich in history and hosts many fun events. “It’s small and but there are lots of interesting things to see and do,” said Nancy Wilson, executive director and events promoter of the Vance County Department of Tourism. Built in 1785 and officially established in 1841, Henderson is steeped with architecture and stories. Since 1837, businesses have sprung up from along what is now Garnett Street. Now Vance County provides a Heritage Trail Historical Walking/Driving Tour that displays 50 preserved and restored locals and each that has a story dating between the late 1700s and 1930s. One point on the trail is the oldest frame

After drying your feet off, come see what else Henderson has to offer church in the state: St. John’s Episcopal Church, built in 1772. Another location on the trail is the Confederate Cemetery, in which the graves are marked from Aug. 1, 1864, to April 15, 1865. A third point is the working five-story clocktower at the Henderson Fire Station, built in 1908. Forty-seven other architecturally and historically astounding sites are also viewable. Wilson described downtown Henderson as an interesting place to explore and easy to get around. Throughout the year Vance County holds a number of events in that area. John Barnes, president of the HendersonVance County Chamber

of Commerce, said the chamber hosts an event called “Meet Me in the Street” in downtown Henderson. It is held three times a year on Garnett Street. The road is closed off from traffic and a concert band series is held for the enjoyment of the community. Although each of the three events will have a different band performing, they will all primarily perform beach music. A dance area will be provided in front of the performance stage. Barnes said, “It’s just a way for families to come together for great fellowship, food and fun.” The second in the series is scheduled May 30, and the finale is Sept. 12. The first was held

April 26. “Every community has some tourist attractions,” Barnes said. “But what makes Henderson different is our people. Henderson has good people.” Barnes went on to say, “People are eager to help

a neighbor, that’s what attracted me to Henderson.” Another popular event that will take place in downtown Henderson area is the Show, Shine, Shag and Dine on Oct. 19. This event is hosted downtown by the Vance County Department of

Tourism because the entire theme is based on vintage history. Wilson said, “I may be prejudiced, but I love Henderson and my county.” Contact the writer at aouthouse@hendersondispatch. com.
