ANNUAL REPORT Summer 2017 (Reporting Data from 2015-16 School Year)

MOVING UP AT HEMPFIELD SCHOOL DISTRICT As part of our district’s Comprehensive Plan, as well as the goals of our Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, Hempfield School District is continually developing and improving systems and processes that enhance the quality of communication between school personnel and families. The goal is to promote effective school-to-home partnerships. An area where we identified a need for stronger communications was in our transition processes, including incoming kindergarten students and the transitions from elementary school to middle school, and from middle school to high school. Recognizing the importance of providing children with a successful transition from early childhood centers and home settings to the kindergarten classroom, we introduced our Kindergarten Toolkit in August 2016. This e-newsletter was sent to incoming kindergarten parents/guardians using the email addresses provided during the kindergarten registration process. The email specifically outlines six resources, including links to essential sources that help new families navigate our school district,

such as the school calendar, mobile app, and Kindergarten Handbook. We also developed fun, new materials for the Kindergarten Toolkit to help kindergarteners manage the mixed emotions involved in their very first day of school. Our I Am Going to Kindergarten! e-book explains, in large photos and grade-level appropriate text, what students can anticipate experiencing at school. A YouTube video provides “Advice from the Class of 2028,” our experts in kindergarten who were more than happy to share their knowledge of the grade level with incoming kindergarteners. Based on the positive feedback received on our Kindergarten Toolkit, our Communications Office is now working collaboratively with school principals, school counselors, and district administration to develop materials and resources that will help parents/guardians and students transition from grade 6 to 7 and grade 8 to 9. Moving from a known, comfortable environment to one that is different and unfamiliar can be

stressful. Our goal is to help parents and students acquire knowledge about various steps in the transition process, which ultimately supports our district’s vision of personal growth, achievement, and success for every student. A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT The end of school year pace is always a bit frenetic, and it can be difficult to remain focused on what we are trying to accomplish. It is at these times that I frequently remind myself why I do what I do, to keep my head and heart connected and in sync. I am very proud of the work being done at Hempfield by so many committed, caring, professionals and by what our students aspire to do and become and how they demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity. With each passing year there appears to be even more volatility in the political environment surrounding public education and much uncertainty with respect to things like the state budget and how it will impact school funding.

Dr. Adams celebrates with the staff and faculty members who retired during the 2016-17 school year.

Early on in my tenure as superintendent, we set out to establish and have maintained the attitude that we must stay focused on the things we can control as a school system. I believe that we need to accentuate the positive things that happen for kids in our schools, and we work hard throughout the year to reflect on our successes, celebrating the things we do well in our work with students, and committing to a course of continuous improvement knowing that there is always opportunity for growth. This is why you will note that our Annual Report includes both quantitative and qualitative data. Our mission is to provide safe environments and responsive programs that inspire all students to become lifelong learners and contributing citizens in a global society. Achievement of this mission cannot be measured in numbers, or data, alone. Inspiring students is a result of robust academic, artistic, athletic, and altruistic activities. It is a result of new technologies that enhance classroom learning and level the playing field for all students across our district. It is a result of rigorous and relevant curriculum connected to a 21st century world by dynamic teachers in the classroom. And, it is a result of the care and concern demonstrated for students by employees, be it an aide, teacher, principal, secretary, custodian, or other staff member. I am here to serve children in the Hempfield community, and I believe that the people who comprise our school district share this same purpose of service to students. If each student leads an enriched life while here, and leaves prepared to succeed upon graduation, we are doing our jobs. Have a great summer! Christopher S. Adams, Ed.D.

2015-2016 PSSA & KEYSTONE ASSESSMENTS Pennsylvania’s education regulations, also known as Pennsylvania School Code, require rigorous academic standards and assessments to enable the improvement of student achievement and to provide parents and communities a measure by which school performance can be determined. Specifically, the Pennsylvania School Code requires the state to develop assessments that determine student proficiency in three academic areas - English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Technology. All 500 public school districts in Pennsylvania must participate in grade level assessments, known as the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA), as well as Keystone Exams, which are administered upon specific course completion. PSSA ELA: Grades 3-8 Math: Grades 3-8

Keystone Literature Algebra 1

Science: Grades 4 & 8

Biology

Pennsylvania’s academic standards, known as the PA Core Standards, were revised and adopted in March 2014. The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) continues to remind school communities that the 2014-15 school year marked year one of what will be a multi-year transition. A thorough transition to the new standards requires time to develop new curriculum, train teachers, and provide resources to support the new curriculum. With time, and as student and teacher familiarity with the new PA Core Standards grows, student performance should steadily improve. When we analyzed our 2016 scores, we assessed our overall percentage of proficient/advanced students in 2015-16 versus the 2014-15 average. In some cases, we’ve made gains in our scores. In some cases, we were off by a few percentage points. When comparing Hempfield School District averages to state averages based on percentage of proficient and advanced, our district fared well. Standardized tests provide valuable information related to student achievement and growth. Several months after students take the state assessments, individual student reports are sent to the school district and a copy is provided to parents. The results can help us identify student strengths and focus on areas where additional growth is needed. The data also provide valuable information to the school district, which is used for program planning and improvement purposes. For example, district grade level results in a specific subject area may help us target refinements needed within specific units of study. We continue to look at state assessments over a number of years to assess important trends. PSSA and Keystone testing has been highlighted and criticized for a variety of reasons. While we understand the concerns, we would like to help minimize the idea that standardized tests are the end all, be all measurement of how much or how well a student is learning. At Hempfield, we believe that if our curriculum and instruction is tightly aligned to the state standards, our students will be well-prepared for the state assessments. Also, it is important to note that we use multiple data sources to evaluate the effectiveness of teachers, our schools, and our district. This includes diagnostic tests, district common assessments, PVAAS growth data, graduation rate, promotion rate, attendance rate, Advanced Placement, PSAT, and SAT scores. VISIT OUR WEBSITE TO REVIEW POLICIES AND PROCEDURES RELATED TO PSSA AND KEYSTONE TESTING. www.hempfieldsd.org/assessments

Operating from a growth mindset, we recognize that PSSA and Keystone data allow us to acknowledge and celebrate successes when achievement and growth are evident, while also providing us the opportunity to explore and address areas of deficiency.

OUR 1:1 PERSPECTIVE FROM THE CLASSROOM From the Teacher

Ms. Erin Stewart Music Teacher, Centerville Middle School & Landisville Middle School Adjusting to a new technological system always has its growing pains, but with the addition of iPads for more students this year, the benefits overshadow the struggles. This year I have seen students engaged in their work both in and out of the classroom more than ever before. Students are able to access documents and apps on their iPads at all times. It is also apparent that the students value the ability to do this since they frequently send questions and comments to me on Schoology. Another valuable thing about the iPads is the students’ ability to access music apps that increase their learning. They have access to Garageband, where they can create and play music, MusicTutor where they can learn how to read notes on the staff, and IWriteMusic where they can practice traditional composition. Students are taking ownership of their learning and seem to be making gains that they haven’t before.

Olivia Heim and Ms. Erin Stewart discuss how iPads have transformed teaching and learning from their perspective.

This year I was able to create a project where students created music and recorded music collaboratively. They then listened to their recordings and evaluated each performance. This project allowed me to efficiently and effectively address all of the National Music Standards in a short period of time. One of the final things that has made the iPads valuable is the fact that there are no more lost papers. Students can access and save all their documents on the iPad and submit them to Schoology. I am thankful for the district’s 1:1 iPad program because it has helped me be a better teacher and has helped my students learn. The iPads are preparing our students for their future - a future that surely will be defined by the use of technology.

From the Student

Olivia Heim Seventh Grade Student at Centerville Middle School As a seventh grader in the Hempfield School District, I think the iPad is a great contribution to middle school on a daily basis. There are numerous perks to having an iPad for class. For example, the option of typing assignments makes learning easier. You can simply pull up GoogleDocs and type whatever you need. In the past, it took extra steps for the teachers to take out the MacBook cart for a student to type. Often, a PDF document on Schoology is my saving grace when I lose a paper for class. Teachers use the iPads to their advantage by coming up with creative assignments that utilize the iPads. I use my iPad in almost every class. Another reason I like using an iPad in class is the fact that I can take a picture of the assignment board. Every day when I arrive in math class, I quickly snap a picture of the night’s homework, as does most everyone else. The iPads have provided me with a new perspective on learning. It prepares us for the future, which will no doubt rely on technology. The program has certainly benefitted my school, and we are very grateful for the technological advancement, which makes our lives easier. SUPERINTENDENT BUSINESS ADVISORY COUNSEL (SBAC) LAUNCHES Superintendent Dr. Chris Adams confidently advocates that the local business community reaps tangible benefits when the Hempfield School District is successful in our quest to fulfill the district mission of providing safe environments and responsive programs that inspire all students to become lifelong learners and contributing citizens in a global society. This is one reason why he committed to forming a Superintendent’s Business Advisory Council (SBAC) this school year. As a district-level organization, a primary aim of SBAC is to explore how the school and business communities might work together more closely to achieve respective aims.

Library & Media, and the Art Gallery. At the Technology and Engineering Education level, this includes desktop publishing, photography, electronics technology, materials and processes, stage design, drafting and design, manufacturing technology, and power technology. Our Library & Media Program showcased the one-button studio, student collaboration spaces, and how our specialists are working with students to develop information literacy skills. Finally, in our Art Gallery, SBAC members were able to view completed projects representing the artistic voices of students in the areas of fine metals, hot glass, clay, fibers, drawing, sculpting, painting, and printmaking.

We were able to highlight firsthand some of the integrated, experience-based instructional program that prepares our students for 21st century learning and careers by touring three areas of the high school – Technology Education,

SBAC members collectively discussed the need to help students and parents/guardians realize that there is a diversity of post-secondary opportunities today that can result in students being able to make a successful living, without pursuing a

four-year college degree. While technology holds a huge place in many businesses, it cannot accomplish everything in a business. Therefore, we need to appreciate that there continues to be work that can only be done with the hands. Further, there is a still a very real need for skilled manual and technical laborers, and well-paying, gold-collar opportunities exist locally. Our hope is that SBAC partnerships will help Hempfield students develop a greater awareness of the myriad career opportunities available to them right here in our community. This, in turn, may help us keep local “talent” from leaving the area after graduation, thus ensuring that our business community will be well-served by Hempfield graduates. We are thankful for our Business Advisory Council members who have agreed to serve in this capacity.
