Festive fun in Helston The fun starts on Friday November 27 from 5pm. Why not come early to soak up the atmosphere while doing some late-night shopping or grabbing a bite to eat? Many of the town’s traders are staying open especially, and there will be a wide variety of craft and food stalls in the streets too. Santa will be in his Grotto, situated near the Museum, and a variety of live bands and buskers will fill the streets with music and song. The main event is the switch on of the illuminations. The best view will be on Coinagehall Street for the countdown and fireworks at 7.30pm. On Saturday November 28, for the first time in Helston, there will be a surge of Santas completing a one mile circuit of the town’s main streets. The event, organised in conjunction with, and all proceeds going to, Cornwall Hospice Care,

starts at 1pm and ends at the Monument on Coinagehall Street and looks set to be a huge success. Although a small event in location, there are big activities in store for all the family on Friday December 4 between 4.30pm and 6.30pm beside the Museum. See Santa in his Grotto and real reindeer in the street. There will also be Christmas craft in the Corn Exchange of the Guildhall with entertainment by live bands and singers. The finale this year is another first for Helston. More than 200 children from local primary schools will parade with their hand-made lanterns through the streets of Helston. They will be accompanied by Helston Town Band, Santa in his sleigh and those wearing pantomime costume from the Epworth Hall. From 5pm there will be another night of market stalls lining the streets. The parade starts at 7pm.

Helston Day Nursery celebrates 25 years TODDLERS and parents are set to celebrate the 25th anniversary of a nursery this weekend. Families of past, present and even future are invited to a party at Helston Day Nursery on Church Hill on Saturday. Among the entertainment will be lunchtime coffee and cakes and live music in the evening from local band Elementary Penguins. Nursery manager Clare Williams said: “We are really proud of what we have achieved over the last 25
years. I’ve worked here for the last 17 years and two other senior members of staff have also been here for 15 years, so we’re a long-standing business. We planned the anniversary event to meet up with parents from the past and present and welcome you to come along.” Tickets for the evening event on Saturday November 14 cost £5 and are available from the nursery or Helston Community College. Guests are invited to bring their own alcohol.

AN independent candidate standing in Helston’s Town Council elections is appealing to the public to vote. Dave Potter, of Church Street in Helston is seeking election as a councillor for the Helston West Ward following the resignation of Justine Hornsby earlier this year. He said: “Turnout has been extremely low in local elections in recent times, and I am asking people to make sure they exercise their right to vote. I am standing for the election because I believe in Helston and want to add to the development of the town and its facilities.” Other candidates seeking nomination in the poll on Thursday are Helston residents Danny Keay and Jo Morley. Votes can be registered at a polling station situated at The Old Cattle Market, Porthleven Road in Helston from 7am to 10pm.

Refurbished bar to offer sports action A HELSTON venue better known as a busy weekend haunt for revellers is hoping to attract a new clientele by relaunching with a new theme. Shooters Bar in Coinagehall Street has undergone a makeover and customers will also able to enjoy an array of sports action as the bar’s new TV screens will show Sky Sports and BT Sport. HinesSight Sight Mad Max post-apocalyptic world planned for Cornwall? WE are fortunate to live in a peaceful and crime-free country, or at least I assume that’s the case with news that the police are converting stations into modern low cost housing and getting rid of officers on the street. Last month Devon and Cornwall Police announced plans to close 13 stations and offices, including the police station in Helston. Last week it was provisionally announced that 1300 jobs were to be cut over the next five years. Cornwall could lose ALL of its Community Support Officers and a worst-case scenario will see staffing level drop from the 6,200 employed five years ago to just 3,900. Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer said: “It is clear that any cut of this magnitude would have a significant impact on the service we are able to provide to the public.” Compare that with a quote last month from the chief executive of the Police and Crime Commissioners when he said: “I am comfortable that the plans announced will have little impact on operational delivery.” In just three weeks we have escalated from “little”
to “significant” impact on services. I dread to think what word they will use by the time the cuts are completed in 2020. I suspect by then we will be living in a post-apocalyptic world where Mad Max will be driving down the main street firing a shotgun at vagrants. I wonder how many police officers have been cut from the security team accompanying the Prime Minister’s wife on her shopping trips to Harrods where she picks up apple sauce to go with David’s pork dinner. Three years ago Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell was forced to resign after the infamous ‘plebgate’ scandal after he was allegedly overhead calling one of the umpteen police officers protecting the prime minister a “pleb”. It was difficult for him to deny the allegation due to the number of police witnesses in the area, as one assumes staffing cut backs are not as vicious on Downing Street. I imagine any lunatic could walk into the Devon and Cornwall Police HQ, shout that they are all a bunch of p***s with no fear of facing charges as the only witness would be the office cat.

Cuts to everything not affecting them POLICE job losses are not the only budget cuts to public services that are affecting the day-to-day lives of the people in Cornwall. Leisure centres across the county aface closure when Cornwall Council's management contract with operator Tempus Leisure ends in 2017. The council has been testing the market to see if they can find private companies interested in running the centres and are also considering selling them off. If no buyers or alternative options found they could close, which was a prospect that almost became real for Falmouth’s Ships & Castles recently. Many public toilets have closed across the county, including in Helston’s town centre leaving visitors more pre-occupied with how to spend a penny than than preferably spending a pound in shops. Many of us will know someone that works in the public sector and will be famil-
iar how they claim to be overworked they are through cut backs and the reduction in staff numbers. The number of stress related sickness days recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust has grown by 50 per cent over the last four years, which is attributed to less people employed to carry out a workload that has not decreased. The maths are simple. Less staff + same workload = more stress. The average family will be over £1000 worse off every year when the government eventually force through their changes to the tax credit system. While all this is going on, I am paying more income tax than ever while watching people I care about suffer. Perhaps our MP’s with their expense accounts, large salaries and protected pensions are finding it hard to relate to us. I know I find it increasingly difficult to relate to them.

Classic ballet comes to Cornwall on first UK visit THE acclaimed Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet company will be heading to Hall For Cornwall this month on its first UK tour. THINK! campaign highlights deadly country roads FIGURES from the Department for Transport have revealed that country roads are the deadliest, with an average of three people dying on country roads every day last year. In total, 1,040 people were killed and 9,051 seriously injured on country roads in 2014, with a third (348) of fatalities occurring on a bend. The figures for the South West show that 125 people lost their lives in 2014 with a further 1,056 seriously injured on rural roads. Cornwall Road Casualty Reduction Group partners endorse this campaign and will continue to promote rural road safety issues as part of the ongoing education, enforcement and engineering programmes
being delivered throughout the year across the County. In spite of this, more than a fifth of road users in the South West (21%) admit to braking too late on bends and nearly half (45%) claimed to have swerved to avoid something in the road. The problem is most acute among young drivers, with a third confessing to braking too late before a bend and more than one in ten admitting to ‘taking the racing line’ by crossing into the opposite side of the road to take a turn faster. Young drivers are also the most likely age group to overtake on a bend without a clear road ahead. In response, THINK! has launched a new country roads campaign and has partnered with a farmer to turn potential road hazards into impossible-
to-ignore warning signs. ‘Helpful Hazards’ features animals and vehicles sprayed with signs prompting drivers to slow down, anticipate hazards and brake before the bend, not on it. British Touring Car champion James Cole is backing the THINK! campaign. He said: “I’m concerned that so many people
take the racing line on bends. It’s one thing to do that in a racetrack environment but quite another to do it with no knowledge of what is around the corner. Take more care, anticipate hazards, stay in control and give yourself more time to react by braking before the bend, not on it.”

Helston Football Club maintain winning start to pool league West Cornwall Pool League Division One HELSTON FC A continue to head the table and picked up their fourth successive win last week. They recorded a strong 7-2 win over White Hart B team while closest contenders Wendron CC A posted an excellent 8-1 win over Mullion FC A, Les Rundle, Ian Williams, Pete Williams, Dave Liddicoat and Shane McCartney all winning for Wendron. Helston RBL A travelled to the Lizard and after trailing 2-1 fought back to gain an impressive 6-3 win over the summer league champions. The Atlantic Inn A team were 3-0 down against Godolphin Club F but wins from Tony Woodhams, JPCollins and Dean Williams helped them to a 6-3 victory while Helston RBL B gained a 7-2 win over the Rodney Inn. Division Two LEADERS Godolphin Club E fell off the top perch when they were beaten by Helston RFC B team with Matt Tremayne, Steve Hosking, Ed Savage and Alan Thomas all won their singles matches This allowed Godolphin Club A to move into top spot with a 6-3 victory over the Paris Hotel A side.
Constantine SC had a third straight win with a 6-3 win over Helston Cricket Club and Helston RFC Cdefeated Potters Bar B by the same score. Division Three HELSTON RFC D trailed 2-1 and 3-2 against Helston RBL D but finished strongly to maintain their 100 per cent record. The biggest win in the division came from the Lion & Lamb B team who won 8-1 against the Paris Hotel B team, singles wins coming from Lestyn Head, Keith Jacka, Tom Greenaway, Treve Jacka and Keith Jacka. Mounts Bay were 4-1 down against the Bell Inn but won 5-4 and White Hart A edged out the Five Pilchards 5-4. Division Four QUEENS Arms B team defeated their A team 63, wins coming from Neil Barku, Dave Thomas, Callum Richards and Dave Eva and the Black Swan A team were also 6-3 winners over the Atlantic Inn B team. Potters Bar A put a stutter on the Black Swan B team's great start with a 5-4 victory and the Wheel Inn defeated Out of the Blue B by the same score.
Golfers enjoy late season sunshine LAST WEEK saw a large field play in a fun ‘California Scramble’ in warm sunshine and exceptional weather at Mullion Golf Club. Finishing top was the team of Bradley Keenan, Ashley Spinks, Jonathon Rowley, Jim McClung, scoring 57.2 Alex and Paul McHuw, John Ratcliffe and Damion Hallett came second with 61.3 points, just ahead of Glynn Summersall, Jon Kew, Wilf Hutchinson and Alan Nichols on 62.0 points
