Community effort leaves Helston clean and tidy The gutters have been emptied, the stonework pressure washed, the verges, streets and alleyways cleared of litter, weeds and undergrowth. Helston is clean, tidy and ready to welcome visitors! Organised and led by Helston Business Improvement Partnership (HBIP) the spring clean was carried out by a combined community team of business owners, local residents, Culdrose staff and members of Helston Life and Light Church. Together they collected 420 rubble sacks of refuse around six to eight tonnes during annual Town Tidy Week. “We got rid of a phenomenal amount of rubbish,

about twice as much as last year,” said HBIP Aesthetics Group member, Brian Curtis of Harlequin Design. “We had an average of 20 people a day, from children to pensioners, for the whole seven days. We are particularly grateful to Helston Life and Light Church and a team of young men from Culdrose who collected 90 sacks of rubbish between them in four hours.” Brian explained that this year work was concentrated on the routes visitors are most likely to take from the car parks to the town centre and cleaning the gutters of shops and businesses in the town centre. Two HBIP members got licenses to use a cherry picker for the gut-

ter cleaning job, which Brian said created an astonishing proportion of the total amount of rubbish removed. All those who joined the Town Tidy effort were provided with brooms, sacks, gloves and Hi-viz jackets donated by Seacore Fugro in Falmouth. Shirley Moralee, Development Officer for HBIP said: “Town Tidy Week has been a resounding success. The Helston community, particularly the business community, takes pride in its town and wants visitors to have a good impression from the moment they arrive. Helston is a unique and special place, we all benefit if the town looks its best.”

Ship portraits, sailor’s valentines, scrimshaw carvings and finely detailed model boats are just a few of the maritime antiques which surface in Cornwall due to it’s close association with the sea. ‘Many of the nautical treasures we come across, have a wonderful history attached to them’ says valuer Richard Hamm, Richard will also be available for home visits on his regular trips to this area, and is able to offer advice on restoration, probate and insurance valuations. Long serving Chief Aircrewman puts in the hours A Royal Navy Chief Aircrewman serving on Operations has clocked up a significant milestone in his flying career. Chief Petty Officer Jeffery “Ronnie” Barker serving with 814 Naval Air Squadron (The Flying Tigers) in the Gulf region is celebrating after recording 3000 flying hours in his Log book, whilst away from his home base of Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose. Equivalent to 125 days in the air! CPO “Ronnie” Barker joined the Royal Navy in October 1987 as ‘Seaman (Radar) Barker’, before transferring to the Fleet Air Arm in June 1990, commencing Flying Training on the Sea King HAS Mk 6 at 706 NAS at Culdrose. His first Front Line Service was on 819NAS based at HMS

gannet at RNAS Prestwick in Scotland followed by the first of two frontline tours with 820NAS once again back in the West Country. During his time on 820 NAS he was involved in Operation Grapple in the former Yugoslavia in 1992, Operation Palliser off the West coast of Africa in Sierra Leone and Operation Barwood, which provided much needed Humanitarian relief to the Flood victims of Mozambique in 2000. In 1998 “Ronnie” became a Qualified Aircrewmen Instructor and went on to gain his “A2 Instructor category” in early 2003, immediately prior to his conversion from the Sea King to Merlin Mk 1. He has served as an instructor on several occasions with both 810NAS and

824NAS. In more recent times “Ronnie” has served on 829 02 Flight, onboard HMS Monmouth where he was privileged enough to complete a full nine month global tour in 2007. Promoted to CPO in 2008, he has been employed on 829NAS HQ and in the role of Ops at Merlin Force HQ. He joined 814NAS in Sept 2012 and is expected to join Naval Flying Standards Flight at the end of 2014. “I have had an extremely varied and fulfilling career as a Pinger”, said CACMN Ronnie. “I’m very proud that in this day and age, it is comparatively rare for an Antisubmarine Warfare Aircrewman to pass this milestone. It has been a significant achievement in my life”.

Helston College Students show off their creative flair designing window display You do not often see a dragon in an Estate Agents window but that is exactly what will catch your eye if you pass Olivers Estate Agents at the top of Meneage Street in Helston for the next two weeks. The window decoration was commissioned by Olivers Estate

Agents and designed and produced by Helston Community College’s Year 12 BTEC National Certificate students to celebrate Flora Day. The students initially came up with a number of ideas, and then the team unanimously selected the one they liked best. The extremely eye catching

design is made up from a number of layers beginning with the brightly coloured Hal-an-tow dragon drawn on the window with painted scenes from Flora Day hanging behind. The students have really enjoyed having a ‘real’ project where they get to work creatively with their local community,

and producing something which they are extremely proud of. Sharon, Donna and Steve of Olivers Estate Agents said ‘we were delighted to be able to support the art department of the local secondary school and sixth form; and were overwhelmed with the results.’

The 51 Jazz Club of Cornwall offers Traditional and New Orleans style jazz every Sunday from 1pm to 3.30pm at the Smugglers Inn St Erth Praze (on the Helston side of Hayle). The pattern is usually a well-known British touring jazz band once a fortnight and good local band on the Sundays in-between. The touring bands invited to play at the club are mostly chosen from those bands regularly featured at all the usual Jazz festivals around the country. The “Smugglers” has hosted jazz for over forty years and is a well-known and popular venue for bands touring the West Country perhaps also playing at Bude and Plymouth Jazz Clubs on their way to or from the far South West. These bands will often have hailed from London, Manchester, and Birmingham sometimes even from Europe, particularly Denmark and Sweden. The timing at the Smugglers has been a success over the years allowing people the opportunity of a good Sunday roast lunch whilst at the same time enjoying the jazz atmosphere. Cornwall gardeners have a spring in their step Along with the rest of the horticultural industry, Trevena Cross Nurseries near Helston is embracing the enthusiasm of gardeners trying to make the most of the more traditional spring season we are enjoying this year. 450g fresh asparagus 850ml chicken stock

50g margarine 4 tablespoons plain flour 125ml single cream 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

METHOD 1. Trim the coarse ends of the asparagus and cut asparagus into 2.5cm pieces. In a medium frying pan over medium high heat, saute the asparagus in 250ml stock for about 7 minutes or until tender. 2. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan over medium high heat, melt the margarine and

remove from heat. Add the flour and stir well until smooth. Gradually add the remaining stock. Return the saucepan to the heat and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened. 3. Add the single cream, salt, pepper and cooked asparagus with liquid. Stir well and heat thoroughly. Serve hot and enjoy!

Back in County Division 1 for the first time since 2005 Helston produced a fantastic win by 2 runs against visitors Wadebridge. The fixture list had been kind to Helston giving them two home games to start although last weeks fixture was rained off. Helston lost the toss and were invited to bat under heavy cloud cover. Spirits had dropped a little when prolific batsman Chris Martin had a late call to work and was unable to play. Helston grafted well with skipper Dan Jenkin getting 32 but they kept losing wickets to poor shot selection and with 7 wickets down with barely 100 on the board they were not

looking particularily well placed. However the sun came out and Ben Rule 80 no, a winter signing from Camborne, was joined by Aussie Jordan Fulton 34. The pair then set about the bowling and with some fine shots helped the team to 197 for 8. Wadebridge put up a spirited reply but with two wickets each for Peter Boyd, Tom Sturgess and Dan Jenkin Helston were able to win a wonderfully close encounter by 2 runs. Silverstone to stage the world’s biggest ever F1 parade The world’s biggest ever parade of Formula One cars will be staged at this summer’s award-winning Silverstone Classic (25-27 July). The glittering cavalcade – to be led by motor sport legend Sir Stirling Moss OBE – is being organised to celebrate 50 grands prix at Silverstone. The Northamptonshire venue first hosted the British Grand Prix in 1948 and this year’s event will be its 50th, having shared the honour of putting on Britiain’s blue riband event with both Aintree and Brands Hatch in the early years. With three massive grids (for FIA Masters Historic Formula One plus Historic Grand Prix Cars Association Pre ’66 and Pre ’61 Grand Prix cars) featuring more than 100 iconic F1 cars from past generations, the Silverstone Classic already

showcases more grand prix history than any other event in the world. While these competitors will be at the heart of the special parade which will be on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit during the lunch break on Sunday, others with F1 cars not racing at the Classic will also be encouraged to participate in the historic occasion. “With three exciting and evocative races on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon starring more than seven decades of the world’s greatest grand prix cars, the Silverstone Classic is always a massive attraction for all F1 fans – but this year will be even more special,” vowed Nick Wigely, Event Director. “We really wanted to mark Silverstone’s 50th Grand Prix in terrific style and this fabulous parade will do just that – even more so as Sir Stirling

Moss will be adding his magic to proceedings. Obviously I’d like to thank Stirling for agreeing to head the parade and those at Masters and the HGPCA for their enthusiastic support. We now want to hear from others with F1 cars who are keen to participate not just in setting a new world record but also in being part of something really special.” Moss, 84, is one of Britain’s best-loved motor sport personalities. He is widely regarded as ‘the greatest driver never to win the World Championship’ though he enjoyed many F1 victories for Cooper, Lotus, Maserati, Mercedes and Vanwall. “The Silverstone Classic really is a great event and it will be an absolute honour to lead this parade of Grand Prix cars,” said Sir Stirling. “This is the global home of motor racing after all – I recall meeting

Her Majesty here and so many other dignitaries and guests over the years, not to mention my memories of the circuit itself and the Grands Prix I contested. “Silverstone is a wonderful place with a rich history; in my day it really was a fast and challenging circuit with some extremely demanding corners. During my career I believe I raced 108 cars so I had a pretty good innings and seeing some of those that’ll be involved in the Silverstone Classic brings back a lot of great memories for me. I’m really looking forward to being a part of it all in July.” The ever-growing Silverstone Classic is now seen as the foremost international festival for such ontrack celebrations. In 2011 a special parade of 767 E-types marked the iconic sportscar’s 50th birthday with an official

Guinness World Record. This was followed 12 months later by a world record parade of 60 fabulous Ferrari F40s to celebrate 25 years since the launch of the world’s very first 200mph production supercar. Last year the spotlight was switched to the golden anniversary of the evergreen Porsche 911 with an amazing phalanx of more than 1200 past and present 911s taking to the circuit. While Sunday’s F1 showcase is sure to capture many imaginations, it won’t be the action-packed Silverstone Classic’s only major parade in 2014. Extra space makes extra profit Adding extra space is the most effective way in which landlords can increase the value of their rental properties, according to Nationwide. Extensions and loft conversions can increase the value of a home by up to 20 per cent, whilst less drastic changes such as an extra bedroom or bathroom increase the property’s worth by 10 and 5 per cent respectively. The buy-to-let lender reviewed house prices before and after improvements were made and it was

noted that increasing floor space by 10 per cent adds 5 per cent value to a property, showing the importance of extra space. Any improvement costs are fully deductible against any capital gains tax due on the chargeable gain when the rental property is sold by investors, thus adding further incentive to expand a property in order to increase yield. Nationwide’s chief economist, Robert Gardner, said: ‘We re-examined the factors that affect the value of homes, and the potential to

add value. Having more useable space is generally thought to be consistent with better quality accommodation and people are prepared to pay for it. A 10% increase in floor space, other things being equal, adds 5% to the price of a typical house, whilst adding space equivalent to the size of a typical double bedroom to a two bedroom house can add around 11% to the value. A second bathroom also remains a favourite amongst homeowners and our research shows that creating an additional bath-

room can add 5% to the value of the average house. Homeowners that add a loft conversion or extension incorporating a double bedroom and a bathroom can add about 20% to the value of a three bedroom, one bathroom house.’ ‘Households appear happy to pay for more space and our analysis suggests that, providing the room is useable, adding an extra bedroom can be a good way to increase the value of a property.’
