Work begins on new housing development CONSTRUCTION has begun on 32 new homes at a development site in Mullion. Parish Council Chairman John Lang had the honour of cutting the first turf at the site that is situated to the rear of Redannack Estate. Social landlord Coastline Housing has secured more than £500,000 of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to develop the properties, a mix of traditional houses and bungalows, 19 properties for affordable rent will be offered locally and three homes for part-buy, part-rent, to help local people get a foot on the property ladder. Ten other properties will be offered for sale on the open market. Sara Hodges, Development Manager at Coastline Housing, said: “We’ve been extremely lucky to secure funding for some much-needed affordable housing for the village of Mullion at this moment in time and we’re delighted that work has started on site.” Mr Lang added: “Mullion Parish Council is pleased to have worked with the developer and Coastline Housing to achieve such a scheme which will be of significant benefit to our community

Free sports day for people Voters reminded to with learning disabilities ensure that they are registered PEOPLE with learning disabilities can enjoy a day of free sports activities in Truro as part of a programme to promote healthy activity and the use of the city’s parks. The Big Park Day will offer a range of activities including easy cricket, football, art workshops, music therapy, archery, boules and table tennis. The event takes place in Boscawen Park between 10.30 am and 3pm on May 20, and all anybody willing to participate needs to do is bring a picnic blanket and a packed lunch. Adrian Quest, Health Promotion Liaison for Learning Disabilities said: “The Big Park Day is about helping people with learning disabilities to get active and also to promote a healthy lifestyle and get the most out of Cornwall’s parks and open spaces. “This is shaping up to be a great event. We have

lots of different activities to encourage as many people as possible, whatever their ability or experience, to come along and participate.” Councillor Jim McKenna, Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for Adult Care, said: “Big Park Day is a great initiative and I am grateful that so many individuals and organisations Big Park Day is about helping people with learning disabilities to get active and also to promote a healthy lifestyle and get the most out of Cornwall’s parks and open spaces.

VOTERS are being reminded that time is running out to register to vote for the EU Referendum. The number of registered voters increased by nearly 18,000 in time for the Police and Crime Commissioner elections but there are still around 14,000 people in Cornwall who have not returned their application forms, despite numerous reminders from the Council’s elections team. The intense publicity around the EU Referendum has led to a flurry of applications to the Council’s elections service over the past few weeks from people wanting to register to vote. However, while some of the applications are from people who have not yet registered to vote, nine out of ten applications received over the past few weeks have been from people who are already on the electoral register. This has led to an enormous increase in the workload of the elections staff who have to write to each one of these duplicate applicants to let them know they do not need to apply again. Denise Holwill, the Council’s Electoral Services Manager said: “While we want to make sure that as many people as possible register to vote so they can

have their say, we don’t want people who are already on the electoral register to apply again. “We know that some people think they need to specifically register to vote in the EU Referendum. “If you are a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen and registered to vote in local government and/or parliamentary elections you will be able to vote in the Referendum. If you received a polling card or a postal vote form for the Police and Crime Commissioner elections, then you are already on the electoral register and do not need to do anything else unless you have recently changed address.” If you want to vote in the EU Referendum, you need to register to vote by Tuesday June 7. If you have not yet registered to vote, then you can apply online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. You can also use this website to check whether you are on the electoral register, update your name, address or other details or arrange to vote in person or by post. Popular TV series turned into musical

A THEATRE company has turned a popular TV prison drama into a musical which will be performed at the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth. Bad Girls the Musical is based on the popular award-winning TV series and is set in the fictional HMP Larkhall. The story follows the new idealistic Wing Governor Helen Stewart and her battles with the entrenched old guard of Officer Jim Fenner and his sidekick Sylvia Hollamby. The musical also highlights the love sto-

ry that develops between Helen and charismatic inmate Nikki Wade. A tragic death on the wing leads to an angry protest from the women and forces Helen and Nikki to their opposite sides of the bars. But when it’s clear that Helen stands to lose her job over Jim Fenner’s misdeeds, the race is on for the women to nail Jim once and for all. Flora Day manners New Cornwall police

I HAVE read plenty of criticism of the seemingly selfish woman who was caught on video barging her way through the band on Flora Day. The clip, which can be found on YouTube under “The Midday Dance - #FloraDay16 Live Broadcast”, is 19 minutes in and shows a steward ask a woman to step back onto the pavement as the band approached. For unknown reasons, she takes exception to the request and charges up Meneage Street, colliding with and shoving two members of the band. As there may be genuine reasons for her impatience or she may have special needs, I won’t be adding to the negative coverage as it would be irresponsible to do so when not in possession of all the facts. However, it does highlight the impatience of some people on Flora Day which for me fall

into two categories. The first group is those who can’t wait for the dances to pass and insist on walking alongside while obscuring other people’s view. The second is people who have found their position to watch the dance and protect their space as if they have paid thousands of pounds for it. I have been shoved away by sharp elbows several

times when trying to squeeze through a gap, when I have no intention of ‘stealing a place.’ Even when I explain I just wish to pass and get behind them, they continue to act dumb, tut or shove me away. It is either bad manners or most likely reader feedback if they recognise me!

chief to be investigated THE new Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner began her new role last week at the same time that the police began an investigation into expenses allegations focusing on her previous role. Alison Hernandez worked as an election agent for Tory MP Kevin Foster last year and is facing questions over her involvement in submitting expenses. The Conservative party has admitted failing to declare a total of £38,000 of general election expenses

for accommodation costs during its 2015 election campaign blaming an “administrative error”. Ms Hernandez says she is confident she will be cleared of alleged false accounting in relation to the matter. I cannot believe that she has the arrogance to take the position when this cloud hangs over her. She should at least step aside while the matter is investigated. The police have enough of a problem with public trust without having the big boss suspected of wrong-doing.

Unfortunately, it is not always down to guilt but perception, and gaining the confidence of the public. Even if cleared, the reality is that some people will assume that a cover-up has taken place, and someone in her position needs to be above suspicion. My feeling is that serving police officers do not deserve to face the inevitable backlash with perceived corruption, double standards and a resulting loss of faith in the justice system.

Have a fun day for local good cause

FUN will be the name of the game for a fundraising event at Helston Rugby Club next weekend. Event organisers Helston-based DnD Taxis are raising money for The Andrew Oliver Big Heart Fund, which provides 24-hour access defibrillators in and around Helston.

The Fun Day will include a wide range of stalls and activities for all the family including craft stalls, fun rides, bouncy castles, tombola, silent auction, raffles, face painting and entertainment provided by Proper Job Disco. Visitors will also have the opportunity to throw sponges at the taxi drivers in the

stocks. The event will held from 12pm to 5pm on Sunday May 29. Entrance is free.

The Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Growth Hub, a new support initiative for businesses, is one of the first projects from the new Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Growth Programme. HELSTON football club are reaping the rewards of investing in their youth set-up with several teams collecting league titles and appearing in cup finals. The latest to achieve success is the Helston U16 Blues, managed by Charlie Young and Steve Allen, who have completed a magnificent season by winning a treble of the league and two cups. They have won the Cornwall Football Association U16 Luke Cup, Kernow League U16 Premiership and League Cup titles. For their age group they have replicated Bodmin Town’s achievements in the South West Peninsula League. Helston AFC chairman Paul Hendy said: “The club is extremely proud of achievements of all of its 15 youth teams this season.
