Local MP praises the work of heart charity A LOCAL MP has visited members of a heart valve disease charity to view a medical procedure. Derek Thomas MP joined Heart Valve Voice to view a successful transcatheter aortic valve implantation performed on an 81-year-old man who had experienced breathlessness and chest pain. The method replaces a diseased aortic valve of the heart through the blood vessels as opposed to open heart surgery. It is particularly suitable for some older patients who could be considered as too high risk for surgery. He said: “The opportunity to witness the procedure has helped me to fully grasp the incredible impact the procedure has for the patient. It is clear that patients’ outcomes are greatly improved and people are up and about much more quickly compared to more conventional proce-

dures.” Heart Valve Voice is a group of experts in the field of heart valve disease including cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, GPs, cardiac patient societies and patients. Formed in 2013, the charity aims to address the under-diagnosis and under-treatment of people with heart valve disease in the UK by raising awareness and understanding of the disease. Heart Valve Voice Chairman, Chris Young, explained how the procedure can help return patients to a good quality of life. He said: “Not only does access to treatment vary greatly across the country, but the UK lags well behind major European countries in treating the disease. We need to diagnose and treat more patients with heart valve disease now, otherwise we could be facing an epidemic in the foreseeable future.”

Welcome to Cornwall The high street should be the IT WAS announced last week that up to 20 Syrian refugees, mostly children, are preparing to leave their makeshift camps in the Middle East and head for Cornwall. The families will be vetted before arrival and will live in private rented accommodation paid by central government and not by Cornwall Council. I sincerely hope that they are made to feel at home in our county, a place I am proud to live in even though I am not technically ‘local’ having moved here in my teens. Although not born in Cornwall, I do feel that by employing more than 40 local people through this publication partially makes up for my lack of Cornish roots. I’m sure these families will grow to offer much to the region as predominantly ordinary

people who once owned homes in their own communities and worked hard before becoming victims of a cataclysmic civil and international war. I would imagine they will be eternally grateful for the opportunity to rebuild their lives without being under constant threat of being bombed, beaten and persecuted. Some people may not be supportive about this news, yet maybe it’s worth remembering that these are innocent children left with nothing. I’m aware of my good fortune to have won the life lottery to be born within a civilized society and look forward to welcoming these people to our community.

I remember the Competition Commission once considering blocking new stores if the same company already had an outlet less than 10 minutes’ drive away from the proposed site. In 2009, our then MP, Andrew George, said such a rule would “help local authorities who wish to counteract the impact of the market dominance of very large supermarkets”. He reiterated the importance of town centres by adding:

“I hope that it will also act to help protect the viability of our market town centres”. Today, businesses in our towns find it increasingly difficult to compete with large out-oftown shopping centres and supermarkets so it was with dismay that I saw a Helston supermarket has opened a mobile phone shop within its premises. The new shop is an addition to the existing pharmacy, locksmiths and opticians - all competing with local businesses in the town centre. The supermarket also has a large selection of home hardware, gifts, cards, toys and DVDs to

choose from - again in direct competition with local stores. I’m not one to stand in the way of progress nor feel that we should be afraid of competition, yet feel it is vital that as consumers we try to ensure our towns should not just survive, but thrive. The high street should be at the heart of every local community. A place where people come together while providing essential services and creating jobs. Buying from independent retailers boosts the local economy and supports local people while helping to keep our community unique.

What’s on - Where to go Victorian photographic exhibition and workshop coming to Cornish Studies Library THE ARCHIVES and Cornish Studies Service recently celebrated a very successful Victorian Photographic Extravaganza and will be offering a rare chance to take part in a Victorian photographic workshop this week. Participants in the ‘ArTchive: Victorian Portraits’ workshop will have the opportunity to use the Victorian wet collodion photographic technique to create an image on glass. Chloe Philips, Archives and Cornish Studies Service Learning Lead Officer, said: “Victorian photography is really interesting and over 150 people recently attended the Victorian Photographic Extravaganza we hosted on Saturday 5 March, as part of Redruth’s St Piran’s Day celebrations. Many of the visitors had their portrait taken in the Victorian photo studio, inspired by the many photos on display at the Cornish Studies Library.” The workshop takes place from 10.15am - 4pm on Friday at the Cornish Studies Library in Redruth and will be led by artist Nicky Thompson. E-Type found under a hedge sells for £58,000 at auction A 1963 Jaguar E-Type found under a hedge in the village of Bisley in Surrey sold for £58,000 at COYS Spring Classics auction in London. Chris Routledge, CEO of international auctioneers COYS, said: “We were encouraged by strong results achieved across the board and the number of registered bidders joining us and bidding in the room – it’s always good to see the market is as active as ever.” He added: “The derelict E-Type attracted attention from all four corners of the world and bidders in a packed auction room and via telephone fought fiercely for it on Tuesday night. It ended up going to an English collector and Beatles enthusiast who plans to slowly restore it to its former glory.” The E-Type showed just 44,870miles on the clock and still had the last tax disc on the windscreen which expired in November 1969. The car’s first owner in May

1963 was none other than Ivor Arbiter, who owned Drum City and Sound City in London and was the designer of the ‘drop – T’ logo for The Beatles. It changed owners a couple of times between 1965 and 1967, when it moved to its last owner Frank Riches, who raced it extensively at Oulton Park, Brands Hatch and Blackbushe between 1967 and 1969. Frank burnt out the clutch and instead of getting it fixed he put the car into storage in a lock up until the 1980s, he then moved it to his garden where is remained under a tarpaulin until the present vendor rescued it in 2015. Other important cars auctioned included a veteran 1901 Delin 4HP Voiturette eligible for the London to Brighton Run (sold for £64,520), a 1984 Lamborghini Countach 5000 S (£253,800), a 2010 Aspira F620 (£86,920) and a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 190SL (£81,320).
