TRADITIONAL FOLK and gypsy-flavoured music from across the Balkans and Russia will be the theme at the Tolmen Centre this month. The Budapest Cafe Orchestra will perform in Constantine and promise to “take the audience on a journey from one pole to another, from a desperately tragic evocative heart-rending ancient Jewish melody to a dance from Romania or Russia.” The band, who describe themselves as the finest purveyors of Balkan music this side of a Lada scrap heap, consists of a violin and accordion player, a guitarist and bassist. Another needless road “improvement” causing driver anger and frustration

IN a continuing theme for this column, road planners have yet again left me confused with a poorly planned alteration to a road in Helston. The stretch of road alongside Truscott’s car dealership and opposite Meneage Street Surgery has seen a single yellow parking line replaced with parking bays; causing traffic delays and is highly inconvenient for motorists. When cars are parked in the new bays the road bottlenecks at the end nearest town preventing motorists being able to travel in both directions. Drivers approaching the direction of the Spar store must wait until no cars are approaching from the opposite direction before attempting to pass.

Being a busy route within the town, the alteration means motorists often have to wait for long periods for gaps to appear before they can begin the manoeuvre, and if a car transporter is delivering to one of the garages, it becomes utter chaos. The hazard is much worse around school run time; I sat in a line of traffic for five minutes during one day last week. Furthermore, the length of the bays coupled with the curvature of the road make it difficult for drivers to gauge when it is clear to proceed. These new ‘improvements’ may also have a detrimental effect to the long-standing issue at Cross Street, with drivers using the road as a rat-run to bypass the town centre. I found my-

self using Cross Street more recently to avoid the delays at the top of the town, which adds to a problem the council considered serious enough to implement a temporary traffic priority alteration last year. Although I have never investigated the qualifications or skill requirement to secure a job at the council’s traffic planning department, I am beginning to suspect they recruit from the nearest primary school reception class. Perhaps the council could have spent the money instead on making repairs to the replica of the lunar surface on Station Road, which seems determined to ruin my car suspenn Changes to Meneage Street causing frustration for motorists sion.

The Little Rocket Man Is Not Rocket Science I am so looking forward to the North Korean leader, Kim, meeting Donald Trump in a few months. I appreciate it is a serious issue, but can’t it still be fun? Or as David Brent, from the BBC comedy, The Office, said when raising money for Comic Relief: who says famine has to be depressing? And I agree. Trump called Kim, short and fat, and the Little Rocket Man. Whilst Kim called Trump, a psychopath, a loser and a lunatic. The children from Parc Eglos Primary School can learn a lot from these two madmen.

Well, as the end of the tax year is approaching, you can also learn a lot from Bumble Bee! I am going to give you three things to think about to reduce your tax bill. You only have a couple of weeks left to put into action. So don’t wait; act now!

Firstly, the best way to reduce your tax bill is to pay into your pension scheme. The lovely, cuddly Govern-

ment will gross up your payment by 25%. So £1,000 becomes £1,250 in your pension fund. Not bad! But you must talk to an independent financial advisor.

Secondly, what about an ISA? The amount you can invest in an ISA is £20,000 for the current tax year. You can invest in stocks or shares, and the income from the ISA is tax free. If you don’t use your annual ISA allowance then you lose it!

Lastly, there is something called an Annual Investment Allowance (or AIA) available for businesses. What is AIA? Any purchase of plant & machinery by a business can be expensed (for tax purposes) in the year of purchase. That is 100% of the cost of the purchase. Not bad! So, say you are a sole trader, and you need to buy a new van for the business, but you think that you will leave the purchase until April or May 2018. Don’t! Purchase it now.

If you purchase the van, worth say £20,000, in March, then you will save tax of £5,800 in the 2017/18 tax return. That can’t be sneezed at. It doesn’t have to be van. It can be computers, furniture and the like. But talk to an accountant (like me, I suppose) to ensure your purchase meets the AIA criteria. I hope Short And Fat Kim, The Loser, Lunatic Trump and The Wonderful Bumble Bee (hey, it is my article so I can choose the adjectives) have given you some food for thought. Mullion Cricket Club looking for a caterer Nothing says summer more than the sound of leather against willow and for many communities in Cornwall this is very much the case, every Saturday across the county people come together to enjoy a game of Cricket. At Mullion this is no different, the local community come out in force to support the cricketers and then take advantage of the excellent facilities the club offers. This may be a drink at the bar or, from late afternoon, a meal

within the club house. For several years, as part of the encouraging the community at Mullion CC, the club has provided in house catering. People come along to socialise and enjoy a delicious home cooked meal. On average 50 – 70 people will enjoy the facilities, many coming along whilst the game is being completed and then the players – including visitors – and their families come along. An opportunity has arisen this summer to become part of the Mullion Family and the

club are looking for a caterer to continue this much-loved community tradition. In return you will have a regular and busy flow of people to come along and enjoy your food. All profits made are for the caterer and not the club.
