Cornwall’s Mini Winter Olympics A group of local school children have re-created all the fun and drama of the Winter Olympics, including the death defying the skeleton bob, during their half term holiday. Unfortunately, unlike at the real Winter Olympics, there was no snow available in Cornwall, so they had to substitute, using scooters instead of skis and a mud slide as a ski ramp. The children spent the day competing as different countries in ice hockey (uni-hoc), biathlon (archery and scootering), snow boarding (mountain boarding) and the skeleton bob (water/mud slide). Everyone had a great time and future potential Olympic winners were inspired to try the real thing, “It was really fun,

active and competitive and I discovered new winter sports which I would really like to have a go at.” Another slight difference to the Sochi games was that all achieved medals and certificates for achievement. The Winter Olympics day was organised by Tempus Leisure as part of their children’s holiday activity programme, which is open to children between 5-14 years of age. Mountain biking and mountain boarding were also on the menu, along with indoor archery and swimming fun sessions. Royal Navy’s top man The visits Cornish air base Beauty Retreat Making his first visit to Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose since becoming First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas KCB DSC ADC DL met air base personnel and saw how things had changed since his Sea King Flying days, when serving with 814 Naval Air Squadron. Admiral Sir George came to Culdrose to share with personnel his vision for a future Fleet Air Arm and the opportunities which HMS Queen Elizabeth, the new carrier will offer. Speaking to trainees who are currently working toward graduating onto frontline squadrons, he set out some of the gripping times ahead they can look forward to, with new Aircraft, Ships and Submarines entering the Royal Navy in next few years. “We are all on journey which has seen a large investment into the Royal Navy,” he said. “There is a long way to go and we are on target with the Queen Elizabeth Carrier programme which will be officially launched by Her Majesty the Queen this July in Scotland. Many of you are destined to serve on her and there are exciting times ahead.” The First Sea Lord visited 820 Naval Air Squadron (NAS), who are set to be the first Merlin squadron to embark on the New Carriers and saw for himself the Merlin MK 2, which entered frontline service with the 820 this year. They are set to be a key feature of HMS Queen Elizabeth’s ‘Carrier Air Group’ (CAG); comprising of ‘Junglie’, and ‘Crowsnest’ Airborne Command and Control Merlin’s alongside the Lighten-

ing II, the Joint Strike Fighter, Jets. Petty Officer Aircrewman Diccon Griffith of 820 briefed the Admiral on his role as an Anti-Submarine Warfare Aircrewman and invited him to see how the new operating systems worked from his seat on Merlin MK 2. “First Sea Lord was interested in my role and how I tracked submarines and the many improvements that have been built into the Mk 2,” said Diccon. “He was impressed by the complex mission system that makes this aircraft one of the most capable ASW platforms on the planet” Being no stranger to Culdrose and Naval Aviation, the First Sea Lord qualified as a Pilot in 1982 before joining HMS Rothesay where he flew the small single engine Wasp helicopter, then Sea

During his visit of the Cornish Naval Air Station the Admiral was shown around some of the support departments on the Base as well lunching with some of the personnel in the Ocean Food Court which provides catering facilities for staff at Culdrose. Rounding off his tour of facilities at RNAS Culdrose, Admiral Zambellas chatted with serving naval personnel and civilian workers from across the Base and assured them of a bright future ahead, and that the Royal Navy’s Aircraft Carrier programme was set to deliver a full spectrum of military options for the next 50 years.

Cornwall Council is one of most successful authorities in England for meeting first choice of secondary schools applications Cornwall Council is one of the most successful authorities in England for meeting the first choice of schools for secondary school pupils. 98.9% of pupils in Cornwall will go to their first choice of secondary school this September. Cornwall Council’s performance has consistently been one of the best in the country. Last year 99% of pupils in Cornwall went to their first choice of secondary school – making the authority one of the top performing local authorities in this area. Congratulating the Council’s admissions staff for their hard work and commitment, Andrew Wallis, the

Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said “Our staff work extremely hard to ensure that school places are allocated in a fair and transparent way and these impressive figures show that the vast majority of parents in Cornwall have been able to get their children into the schools of their choice”. The Council received a total of 5,068 on time applications for secondary schools places this year. Of the 4,939 applications which were for schools in Cornwall, 4,885 (99%) received their first choice. 129 on time applications were received for out of county schools, of which 113 (87% ) received their first choice of schools. This means

that 4,998 children in Cornwall (98.9%) were allocated a place at their first choice of school. 33 children were allocated a place at their second choice of schools, with 7 receiving a place at their third choice. The remaining 30 children were allocated a place at their nearest school with room. All children who applied on time have been allocated a place at a school for September. Any parent who has not been allocated a place at their first choice school has a legal right of appeal to an independent appeals panel. This panel is completely independent of Government, local authorities or schools’ own governing bodies.

Henlys welcomes new manager

Helston bar and restaurant Henlys on the corner of Church and Coinagehall Street has recently welcomed a new manager as they look to consolidate their positon within the town and also make exciting changes in some areas. Kathy St Quintin moved to Cornwall last year, joining family that live locally to Helston as she made a new start in the area. There are strong ties to the local hospitality trade with her sister and brother in law running the Ship Inn in Mawgan. Kathy herself has been in the industry for over 20 years, most recently as Regional Manager for a national contract catering company, working alongside local business man, Chris Dawson running The Range Coffee Shops, nationally. But the lure of the beautiful Cornish region proved too strong and when the opportunity arose to be manager of Henlys, it was the perfect fit for both parties. Henlys is already hugely popular locally and has a very good reputation with Kathy saying, “The main business does not need to be changed. We have a great team and

a great customer base so other than the introduction of some new beer lines I have no plans to change the bar itself “ She added, “With regards to the restaurant, we are looking to freshen up and relaunch the menu. The restaurant space itself is a really super space which can be used for private functions.”

Helston Theatre Company are currently rehearsing for their next show, a double bill featuring the one act comedy, Alternative Accommodation, and a song and dance section, Musical Memories. The show is a tribute to George Shutter, a treasured member of the group who passed away earlier this year. A donation from every ticket sold will be given to Macmillan Cancer Care in memory of George. George Shutter first joined the group over 40 years ago as Musical Director for the first Meneage Arts Pantomime, and accompanied the many Gilbert and Sullivan operettas

that followed. From then on George became indispensible from playing the piano at rehearsals and in the orchestra, conducting the shows, and even taking to the stage as the Pianist in Showboat, a role which was specially extended for him. George was also heavily involved in a variety of musical projects in Helston, as well as playing for Helston Methodist Church Drama Group, Duchy Singers and Miracle Theatre Company. George was also the chosen accompanist for opera singer, Angela Thomas who, along with Anthony Richards, will perform as a guest soloist in Musical Memories. The show will

also feature solo performances by Helston Theatre Company members including Gillian Geer and Gillian Rosewarne. Musical Memories features songs from Gilbert and Sullivan, Joseph, Oliver!, King and I, Oklahoma and many more. Alternative Accommodation & Musical Memories runs 28th-29th March at the Epworth Hall. “Fresh 2014” Dance Showcase at Mullion School Mullion School’s annual Dance Showcase, called Fresh 2014, produced and directed by Ms Tee J Randall, has just finished playing to a very full and appreciative audience, with nearly 70 children being involved from all year groups. The event showcased the work of the Year 10 and 11 GCSE Dance students, as well as the Year 9 Dance Leaders group, the Year 7 and 8 Dance group, the Alpha Freefall group and a quartet of 3rd year degree students from Falmouth University. The Year 11 GCSE Dancers – Leia Barrett-Grainger, Jess Putt, Ellie Humby, Georgia Campbell, Lauren Skewes, Sammi Sugrue and Ellie Roberts brought their highly imaginative choreography to the event, with dances based around the movement of clocks, the daily commute to work, the Charleston, Tectonic plates, Newspapers, the stress of exams, a toy hoop, hypnotism and interlocking Russian dolls

(Matryoshka). The Year 9 Dance Leaders performed a routine called “C’mon..get happy”, based around a park bench in which the unadulterated happiness of one performer began to gradually permeate through the other performers. The Alpha Freefall boys dance group performed a very fast and action packed routine called ‘Pursuit’ and the Lower School Dance group performed an enchanting ensemble piece using chairs to the familiar song, ‘Do Re Mi’. Four Falmouth university 3rd year degree students performed a dance called ‘Elements’ which they had composed in order to exemplify possible development routes for the future.

Tee J Randall commented: “It was wonderful to see all of the students performing their pieces with such energy and commitment to detail. Many many hours of hard work goes into the creation of the work and the I was delighted that the audience rewarded those efforts so enthusiastically. Well done to everyone who took part.” Dance is particularly strong at Mullion School and was one of the foundation blocks for it becoming a Specialist School in the Performing Arts of Dance, Drama and Music. Last year, Ms Randall had a 100% pass rate at GCSE Dance, a stunning achievement.

The pattern is usually a well-known British touring jazz band once a fortnight and good local band on the Sundays in-between. The touring bands invited to play at the club are mostly chosen from those bands regularly featured at all the usual Jazz festivals around the country. The “Smugglers” has hosted jazz for over forty years and is a well-known and popular venue for bands touring the West Country perhaps also playing at Bude and Plymouth Jazz Clubs on their way to or from the far South West. These bands will often have hailed from London, Manchester, and Birmingham sometimes even from Europe, particularly Denmark and Sweden. The timing at the Smugglers has been a success over the years allowing people the opportunity of a good Sunday roast lunch whilst at the same time enjoying the jazz atmosphere. The February meeting of the Porthleven OCS took the form of a talk entitled “The Mystery Soldier of St Erth” given by Cedric Appleby. The intriguing title expanded to become the story of Cedric's detective work in finding details of the man Sapper B Wroe of the Canadian forces, whose name appeared on a war memorial at St Erth, dying in 1918. There was no trace in either the Canadian or British military records of anyone of that name dying in that year. We were told that a search of the Cornishman Newspaper for 1918 produced “Michael Albert Rowe of Trannack, St Erth who died in the military hospital in Montreal”. This mis-spelling of his name was only the first of a series of stumbling blocks and false leads that almost threw Cedric off the trail of Sapper Rowe. He was helped in his search by Major Bob Harrison, the Canadian National War Museum and the National Library of Canada. Further research revealed that he was a local boy, son of a Trannack farming family and

known familiarly as “Bertie”. Originally a drapers assistant, he emigrated to America in 1906. At some stage in the first world war he must have crossed into Canada and volunteered for the forces. However, while training, before seeing active service, he caught pneumonia (probably the “Spanish Flu”) and died at the age of 31 in Ottawa. However, once again, unanswered questions remain, why was he not buried where he died, in Ottawa? Instead, he is listed buried, over 100 miles away, in Montreal. Cedric went to Montreal, looking for his grave. In the cemetery there were 32 Rowes. Finally after searching the plots on 3 separate occasions he located a flat stone slab on which the name of “Micheal Rowe” was engraved. Once again he could not escape erratic spelling! Before launching into his search for the Mystery Soldier,Cedric explained why the St Erth War Memorial was erected in 1917.. a year before the end of hostilities.....but that is material for quite another story... Cedric then widened the subject to include the impact and

seriousness of the “Spanish Flu” pandemic and also described the treatment of soldiers wounded on the battlefields and their repatriation. The talk finished with a mention of various Cornish people who emigrated to Canada and became famous there, the Redruth born Architect Michael Teague responsible for the impressive CityHall Building in Victoria,Vancouver Island, as well as Altarnun born Robert Whale, landscape and portrait painter. Cornwall also received visits from Canadian artists such as the well known Emily Carr, who attended a painting school in St Ives, and loved to paint outdoors in the woods around Tregenna Castle. We were shown photographs of examples of their work. We were very grateful to Cedric Appleby for giving us a very interesting afternoon. Porthleven OCS will next meet on Tues 25th March at 2.30pm at the Public hall when the speaker will be Mrs Elaine Tangye, MD of the much travelled Cornwall Male Voice Choir.

Goodbye to this column, hello to exciting new future for Advertiser You may (or may not) have noticed the Hines Sight column has been missing for a few weeks. This is not through laziness I hastily add, yet for two reasons which I hope you agree are justifiable. The first is because my hands have been full working on the big project for the News & Advertiser, the launch of our new website www.helstonadvertiser.co.uk. Our brand new site launches this week and will provide our loyal advertisers with an even wider reach than they currently enjoy from appearing in 10,000 weekly copies. The website is also designed with our readers in mind, creating a speedy way to place a classified ad, send us your event to be listed or search previous editions. After being quoted several thousands of pounds for a website, I took the decision to design my own. Knowing very little about

design, I have spent the last six months sat up each night until the early hours, learning computer programming, coding and design. Not only has this route saved me a small fortune, it also means I can start to work even closer with other local businesses and with their websites too. I’d be keen to know your views on the site and if you think it needs any changes. Additionally I am working hard on several hugely exciting ideas for the future growth of the Advertiser, both short term and longer term with expansion internally and externally deep in the planning stages. The second reason for my absence is that after serious contemplation and with a heavy heart, I have decided not to continue this column in its current format. 14 years ago, at the tender age of 25, I looked at the Helston Free Gazette, where I was working at the time and considered that it was

possible the people and businesses of the area could be better served with a local advertiser that offered more readable content. After weighing up the risks of leaving a steady job and with 2 young mouths to feed, I decided to launch this paper, in the firm belief it was needed by the town. I felt that readers may enjoy a few news items, colourful property adverts, free classified ads, and a motor section and other readable items of interest from the recipe and gardening column to property news and sports. Yet, I still was not 100% convinced that it would be enough on its own. What I needed was something to make you want to pick it up, something that made the paper talked about, something controversial. And so, Hines Sight was born. A regular column spouting my opinions, which quickly became like Marmite. You either loved it, or

hated it. Whichever camp you fell into, it helped ensure the paper was being read each week. Not that I would compare myself in the slightest to either example, the late Michael Winners ostentatious column in the Sunday Times was one of the most disliked columns in the press, yet it was the one most readers eagerly turned to first. Katie Hopkins, the newspaper columnist and former reality show contestant creates rage across the country with her controversial remarks, yet she is one of the most listened to people in the country. So, as many of you cunning readers recognised long ago, Hines Sight was created for your entertainment, and I sincerely hope you enjoyed the ride. Nowadays, I have become less antagonised by the rights and wrongs of this world and feel it’s time to give others a chance to have a voice. Therefore, for the foreseeable

future, I would like to offer this space as a ‘Readers Corner’ to the people of Helston (and surrounding) to give you the opportunity to maybe get something off your chest, promote an event or voice your concerns. You could submit just a few words, or a few hundred, the choice is yours. You are welcome to send in any comments you would like to make, that local people may be interested in reading. Ford maintains vigorous 2014 sales pace with boosted NEW sales, share and market lead SHOWROOM OPENING Ford is accelerating sales momentum in 2014, with the latest results for February confirming a stretched market lead and increased total vehicle sales and share. This puts Ford in prime position heading into March, when sales increase significantly due to the registration plate change. Ford Fiesta was the number one best seller in February, notching up 4,415 registrations, up from 3,655 in 2013. Ford is extending its lead in retail car sales with increases for February and for the year to date compared with 2013. In February Ford retail car sales share grew significantly to 15.3 per cent, a 1.6 percentage point increase over February 2013. UK commercial vehicle sales, at 13,677, were up 16.1 per cent for the month, compared with February 2013. Ford CV sales

were 2,783 and for the year to date Ford CV sales were 7,851, 10.4 per cent up from 2013, while share was up 1.5 percentage points at 23.2 per cent. Ford medium commercials, headed by the industry-leading Ford Transit and Ford Transit Custom, were 2,475, and for the year to date sales were up from 5,764 to 6,939 and Ford’s share of MCV sales was 32.0 per cent, up from 31.3 per cent for the same period in 2013. Ford Fiesta Van, Ford Transit Custom and Ford Transit were all leaders in their respective segments in February. The sales success of its car and CV ranges saw Ford total vehicle registrations for the year to date grow 7.6 per cent, compared with the same period in 2013, with sales at 39,442 and share up 0.1 of a percentage point at 15.3 per cent.

In the keenly competitive net fleet sector, Ford cars and CVs continue to make significant progress, with net fleet car share for the year to date up 3.7 percentage points to 13.6 per cent, compared with the same period in 2013. Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain chairman and managing director, said: "Ford’s fast sales start to 2014 is solidly based on growth in the more profitable retail and net fleet sectors and is a result of our continued investment in exciting products and industryleading technologies, delivered through the strongest dealer network in the UK. “More retail and fleet buyers choose Ford over any other vehicle brand and we are building on this with a range of new products planned for this year, including new Transit, new Focus and new Mondeo."

New ambulance promises to be the industry’s most advanced yet Iveco and Cartwright have teamed up to launch a new accident & emergency (A&E) ambulance, which is being made available for trials with NHS Ambulance Trusts and private ambulance operators across the UK and Ireland. The body has been designed and developed within Cartwright’s 38-acre manufacturing site in Altrincham, Cheshire, using materials proven in aerospace and motorsport environments, combined with cutting edge metallurgy and the company’s 62 years of experience in vehicle body design. Cartwright says the body is unique in the marketplace for being easily transferable onto a second chassis, of any make, during a projected 15 year minimum service life. The launch vehicle is based on an Iveco Daily 50C17 chassis, which is popular with blue light operators throughout Europe. Key features include its truck-style chassis frame which guarantees structural rigidity, fatigue resistance and long-

term durability, combined with an impressive turning circle and a chassis offering maximum bodybuilding flexibility. Wes Linton, Blue Light Development Engineer at Cartwright Group, says: “We’ve invested significant resources into advancing the construction techniques and materials used in ambulance body design.” Martin Flach, Product Director at Iveco, explains: “From an early stage we knew Cartwright was working on something very special and we were keen to support them. Selecting the Daily chassis for the launch highlights its suitability for ambulance operations; it’s also a model many blue light fleets already operate.” The bodywork comprises a unique combination of high strength fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) laminates, high density structural foam core, special plastics manufactured by VEKA and high strength aluminium extrusions. The FRP laminate offers 90 per cent of the tensile strength of carbon fibre but at

a cost acceptable within price driven arenas. Body joints are fully bonded; avoiding the localised stress raisers of welded, bolted or rivet joints by spreading the joint surface over the full contact area. The fully bonded assembly process extends inside the body, with the internal lockers manufactured from fully bonded VEKA pvc for exceptional strength to weight performance. Full inner skins and lockers are made from the same VEKA pvc to ensure the whole interior is designed for ease of cleaning and infection control. Internal fittings and fixings such as defibrillator brackets, carry chair brackets and Oxygen cylinder brackets are mounted using bonded fixings. Prior to today’s launch, Cartwright says it undertook the largest prototype testing regime ever undertaken for an ambulance body in the UK. Rather than over-engineer one test body to survive all crash tests, it invested in multiple crash test bodies, each designed to provide the strength required to survive

each directional crash test once. This allowed for substantial weight and material savings and ensures a finished product with zero internal panel reinforcing. Key to the body’s modular nature is Cartwright’s decision to mount the lightweight body structure onto a reinforced substructure to provide a strong, rigid mounting point for battery lockers, step wells, steps and tail-lift. Unlike existing ambulance bodies in the UK, this allows fleets the option to remount the body onto a different chassis and wheelbase in the future – ensuring the base vehicle can be replaced after approximately seven or eight years in service, in line with current industry standards. The cab of the Daily is mounted with a new aerodynamic kit developed by Cartwright, combining a cab air deflector with aerodynamic wings to push air over the light bar and around the body sides. This helps to maximise fuel efficiency during the periods of hard acceleration common

with A&E ambulances, whilst adding minimal weight to the vehicle. Linton adds: “Ambulance electrical systems are worked extremely hard with constant parasitic communications loads combined with regular high current requirements for the tail-lift. For this new body, we have developed what we are confident is the most advanced electrical system of its type in the blue-light sector.” This sees a DC-DC step-up charger providing 100A continuous charge current capacity to feed the split-charge system. The split-charge system is monitored and controlled using the actual battery bank state-of-charge, operating to charge the individual banks at predefined precedence and within adjustable thresholds to ensure the battery banks are

kept at their maximum charge. The electrical control system has been designed from the outset to utilise CAN signals where possible and integrate directly with telematics systems. Utilising twin CAN networks the Intellitec iPLC based control system has direct control over all aspects of base vehicle interfaces, battery management and charge control, systems control and event logging. The demonstrator model is powered by a 3.0 litre FPT Industrial diesel engine which is capable of producing up to 170 hp between 3,000 and 3,500 rev/min, combined with a maximum output of 400 Nm of torque between 1,250 and 2,600 rev/min. This ensures sufficient power to meet the rapid response times demanded in the blue light sector.
