Helston turns out for Freedom Parade Helston was brought to a standstill as Sailors and Airman from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose paraded through the ancient Cornish town. The Annual Freedom of Helston Parade brought children and adults cheering enthusiastically onto the streets where Culdrose Sailors were exercising their right to parade through the Borough of Helston since 1958 with “Swords drawn, Bayonets fixed, Bands playing and Colours flying”. Leading this year’s parade was 771 Naval Air

Squadron ahead of HMS Seahawk’s Volunteer Band and a ceremonial Guard of Honour of personnel from across the West Cornwall Base. Town Mayor Councillor Michael Thomas who was very impressed by the smart appearance and bearing of everyone said, “RNAS Culdrose has been an established feature of our town for over 50 years; Mayors have stood here and thanked you for your commitment and service and today I have the honour and privilege to be the 19th Town Mayor to thank you”

A leading Cornwall-based business and sales development consultancy has just opened new offices in Helston, refurbishing an unused building on the town’s high street in the process. Tara Trethowan Consultancy opened the doors of its new high street offices at 12 Wendron Street at the beginning of June, having taken over the lease in May and spending time revamping the property to give it a brand new look. Company founder Tara commented: “I wasn’t expecting to have a highstreet office quite so soon, but the opportunity arose and it was too good to miss, so I jumped at it. It’s also much more convenient for my clients, and gives my business great visibility, as people are now popping in just to find out more about us!� Since launching in 2013 Tara’s business has gone from strength to strength, employing its first member of staff in 2014, taking on two additional recruits in 2015 and introducing an extended range of services through employee skills development and collaboration with other local businesses. Proud moment for Warrant Officers at Culdrose A group of Warrant Officers from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose were celebrating after receiving their Warrant Officer Parchments from the Head of the Fleet Air Arm. At a small ceremony in the Warrant Officers and Senior Rates Mess, Rear Admiral Keith Blount OBE - ACNS, (Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Aviation and Carriers), presented the four senior sailors with their certificates, which recognises their achievements of reaching Warrant Officer Class 1. The four, WO 1 Matt Lawless - Merlin Force Support, WO 1 Ian Morcom - Merlin Force HQ, WO 1 Tony Porter - Senior Maintenance Rating on 824 Naval Air Squadron and WO 1 Tony

Staples - WO Planning, Air Traffic Control, are all currently serving at Culdrose in some of the air station's senior WO 1 positions. A Warrant Officer (WO) is a member of the highest group of non-commissioned ranks holding the Queen's Warrant Parchment, which is signed by the Secretary of State for Defence. Also receiving awards from the Admiral were two other seniors’ rates. Petty Officer Mark Jones of 849 Naval Air Squadron Normandy Flight who picked up his Long Service and Good Conduct (LSGC) medal for 15 years service and Chief Petty Officer Simon Mallaby who was receiving a clasp to his LSGC medal for an additional 15 years.

Council tenants across Cornwall asked to update their details in readiness for Universal Credit and online services All 10,300 Cornwall Council tenants will soon receive a census questionnaire to update their household details in preparation for the change to Housing Benefit and the introduction of new online services. The census, named ‘Everyone Matters’ will be sent out from 15 June and will require all households to let the housing service

know what help they need to be ready for changes ahead. Universal Credit, the single monthly payment for people in or out of work which is being introduced by the Government, merges together some benefits and tax credits. Universal Credit will replace: Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance; Incomerelated Employment and Support

Allowance; Working Tax Credit; Child Tax Credit; Income Support; and Housing Benefit. Tenants will be asked to update their personal details, indicate if they have access to the internet and inform Cornwall Housing of what help they need to prepare for the introduction of Universal Credit. All affected claimants will be

gradually moved onto Universal Credit by the Department for Work and Pensions over the next few years. However, most people over 60 will not be moved onto the new benefit. Cornwall Housing is also looking to develop more online services so that tenants can undertake simple transactions at any time of day or night.

Cornwall Trading Standards is sending out two warnings to residents this week following an increasing number of reports over the last month of dodgy tradesmen offering home maintenance and gardening work, and intelligence about pushy salesmen. The recent reports suggest that vehicles purporting to be from the Council are offering to re-surface driveways with left over tarmac. Leanne McLean, Lead Officer for Doorstep Crime said, “Our message couldn’t be simpler. Do

not buy anything from anyone on your doorstep. Genuine traders do not need to go door-to-door touting for work. Anyone knocking on your door offering you something, no matter how good it sounds, is more than likely up to no good. Cornwall Council or their contractors would never allow staff to offer left over tarmac to residents. Anyone stating otherwise is clearly not a genuine trader.” The other warning relates to home mobility sellers with recent intelligence suggesting that large national firms are using aggres-

sive sales tactics to sell mobility items such as reclining chairs to residents. Customers are bamboozled into agreeing to purchase items at hugely inflated prices and are not being allowed to cancel their contacts. Leanne McLean, Lead Officer for Doorstep Crime said, “These companies prey on the vulnerable, often spending hours in their homes persuading them that they need mobility equipment at inflated prices. The companies appear legitimate in every way and are

often not reported to us as victims often believe they are acting within the law. They are not. Free Sunflower for Beady Eyed Children Trevena Cross Nurseries in Breage, near Helston, has launched an animal hunt at the garden centre this summer to help keep little ones entertained on a fun filled shopping trip. Dotted around the centre are a whole host of different animals and birds just waiting to be spotted by beady little eyes. And it’s not just fun we’re offering. Every child that spots a total of TEN (or more) animals or birds will be rewarded with their very own dwarf sunflower plant to take home and grow in their garden! Not strictly alive, the animals/birds are part of a collection of very lifelike animal ornaments for the garden, created by Vivid Arts. Trevena Cross has sold a range of their smaller ornaments for a long time, but more recently has introduced a much larger range, including some really striking, quite imposing creatures. Spread amongst the vast array of plants at the centre, it offers young children a great game of hide and seek – they just need to do all the seeking!

The Helston and The Lizard Fundraising Group have already raised a fantastic £3,500 for the charity since they formed late last year! These funds will go towards the local Marie Curie nursing service, a service where Marie Curie Nurses work right across Cornwall in people’s homes who are living with a terminal

illness, so that people can get most of the time that they have left. As well as hands-on care, they provide vital emotional support to the whole family. Ceri Crowther Marie Curie Community Fundraiser says ‘We are so grateful for all the hard work that this group have already done and will continue to do in Helston and The Lizard. Every day of your life matters – from first to last, and this group will really make a difference to help terminally ill people in Cornwall’. The group would welcome new members. Charming craft shop celebrates anniversary Next week Helston based gift shop Iesha’s Attic will be celebrating an important milestone as they celebrate a very successful first year of trading. A well known proverb reads, “From small beginnings come great things� and this fantastic little business began in a cold and drafty garage which could not have been more humble. As soon as the bad weather came in the hunt for something warmer, dryer, less draughty and with more light became quite pertinent and after a lot of hard work the Attic moved into a pretty little shop in Meneage st, Helston It started out selling primarily unique handmade jewellery, but as word got out crafters dropped in with their own beautiful makes, and the Attic was soon filled with treasures. They stock everything from stationary, clocks, cards, quillows, trinket boxes,

home wares, books by a Helston author and tons more from a dedicated team of local crafters. Everything on sale in the shop has been hand made in beautiful south west Cornwall by small businesses similar to Iesha’s. On Saturday 13th June I attended the Helston Community Hospital's Memorial Day. I was glad to meet members of the League of Friends and members of staff. Rightly, we are proud of our community hospital and the role it plays in ensuring people can be cared for close to home, where possible. Maintaining this theme, the integration of health and social care is a priority for me and I met with the Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group on Friday and Dr Francis Old on Saturday. Dr Old takes a leadership role within the KCCG and has developed some new work with his colleagues to reduce unplanned hospital admissions for patients in the South Kerrier locality. This work is supported by the Prime Minister's Challenge Fund. I also went to the Breage Summer Fete and was pleased to demonstrate my appalling May Day Pole-dancing ability. I feel it is important to stress that it has been 34 years since I took part in such activities. Watching the Zorbs at the closing stages of Mawgan Feast was equally fun. The highlight in Westminster has to be the comprehensive support the Government received from MP's for the EU Referendum Bill. Over 75% of MP's voted in favour of an in/out referendum on UK membership of the EU. The question on the Ballot papers will be, 'Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union?'. However, if we rely on politicians and the media for information as to the benefits, or otherwise, of our membership, I am sure confusion will reign. To counter this I asked the Speaker's Representative of the Electoral Commission to consider commissioning a lay-persons guide, including costs, of UK membership of the EU. Hopefully, this will be seen as a practical step to informing the debate around the in/out referendum. Many of you will be aware of the years I spent as Development Manager of the Mustard Seed Charity. The most enjoyable aspect of that work was the opportunity to support people with learning disabilities to be more independent. We celebrated Learning Disability Week in Parliament and it was great that some people were able to travel from West Cornwall to London to impress upon MP's the challenges they face and what we can do to help.

Revellers play to packed houses with comedy plays Not one, but 3 nights of comedy were performed by the Ruan Revellers on 10th – 12th June to packed houses at the Ruan Minor Village Hall. The show was made up of two one-act plays, “The Dear Departed� and “All Right on the Night�, and, to complete the quartet, there were two comic sketches written and performed by the cast. The Revellers couldn’t resist a ‘Poldark’ connection in one of their sketches, while the other had a dig at Health & safety legislation. They all had lots of fun, and, judging by the response on all three nights, so

did the audience. The Ruan Revellers continue to build on its success over the last two years, skilfully directed by Angela Agutter, assisted by Wendy Elliott. They have now staged a pantomime, a Noel Coward oneact piece, a puppet Nativity play and two choral events. The cast and wider group vary in age from the young to not so young with the oldest actor being over 80 years of age. The Culdrose Military Wives Choir will host a celebration to show appreciation of the work of the Armed Forces in Falmouth on Saturday 27th June. To be held on Armed Forces Day, the ladies choir invites the civilian and military communities to come together in a free concert at the Princess Pavilion, Falmouth. In addition to the choir's performance on the bandstand, military charities and youth groups will have stalls in the grounds, and there will be family games on the lawn. Helston Football Club beat Rodney to hang on to top spot Helston FC A hang on to top spot but had to win a deciding frame to defeat the Rodney Inn 5-4 in division 1 of the West Cornwall Summer Pool League last week. Lizard FC remain unbeaten and have a game in hand, they defeated Helston RFC A 7-2 and the Lion & Lamb defeated Godolphin Club B 6-3 thanks to singles wins from Steve Hunt, Jon Debnam, Phil Watkins and Tim Oliver. Constantine SC kept their good start going with a 6-3 win over the Bell.

Godolphin Club A are division 2 leaders after a 7-2 win over the Seven Stars last week while the Boathouse edged out the Potters Bar 5-4, singles wins coming fromJames Pawlyn, Tom Askew and Will Pawlyn. Helston RFC C won 7-2 against Helston FC E and Helston FC C came back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Helston RBL D 5-4.

Mullion Golf Festival Week Last week saw golfers turn out in their droves to be part of the Mullion Golf Week Festival. Highlights of the week included the Dennis Bray Seniors Open Competition which attracted golfers from both Cornwall and Devon who enjoyed a brilliant sunny day with a challenging wind which most found difficult.
