Veteran aviator retires after 41 year flying career A former Royal Navy pilot, serving as a civilian contractor at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose has retired from flying after an illustrious career spanning over 41 years. Mr John Adams, currently employed by Ascent Flight Training, is a pilot on 750 Naval Air Squadron who support the training of Royal Naval Observers. He started flying with the Royal Navy in 1973 and for the majority of his early career flew helicopters including the Wasp, Wessex and Sea King Mk 4. He served on exchange with the Royal New Zealand Air Force flying the Wasp and previously on 750 NAS flying the Jetstream T2 trainer and T3 communications transport aircraft. During his flying career

since the early 1970s, John has accrued an impressive 10,200 flying hours on fifteen types of aircraft represented in his logbook. Although he retired from the Royal Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1996, he has flown as a civilian con-

tractor in support of the Royal Navy almost exclusively ever since. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time flying for the Military and shall be very sad to leave,” said John. Continued on page 22

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s Junior Life Skills receive accreditation Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s Junior Life Skills programme has received accreditation from LASER Alliance, the body which promotes practical safety education. The Junior Life skills events run for a few days each and are held annually at nine centres around Cornwall. Representatives from the fire service, Police and the voluntary sector deliver personal and safety education messages to Year 5 children (9/10 year olds), and seek to encourage risk awareness and good citizenship through active participation in a range of scenarios including: • First aid • drugs awareness • crime issues • fire safety • personal safety • electrical safety • road safety • environmental issues and the benefits of recycling.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager Steve Halstead said: “I am delighted for the team that our Junior Life skills programme has received recognition from the LASER Alliance. We believe that our events provide children with valuable safety education and make a difference in keeping them safe. It’s pleasing that an external independent body agree with us.” Events are promoted under the brand of the Safer Cornwall Partnership and coordinated by Flashpoint Lifeskills Centre, part of Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s Prevention team. The content and location of the events is decided referring to risk based evidence and the priority towns which have been identified. When not organising these events, Flashpoint delivers courses in risk awareness for children and vulnerable people at their centre in Bodmin which complement the annual Junior Lifeskills events.

Public and businesses invited to help shape the way Cornwall deals with flooding Communities, business and members of the public are being invited to help shape the way Cornwall deals with the problem of flooding in the future. As part of its role as a lead Local Flood Authority the Council is required to produce a Local Flood Risk Management Strategy to improve Cornwall’s preparedness and resilience in the event of flooding and manage the risks involved. The draft strategy is being published this week and members of the public have until 31 July 2014 to give their views on the proposals. “Flooding is a real risk faced by residents and businesses across Cornwall” said Edwina Hannaford, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Heritage and Planning. “While it is not possible to prevent all flood-

ing, residents, businesses and the relevant authorities can work together as a community to try and reduce the risk and minimise the potential damage that flooding can cause.“ The Local Flood Risk Management Strategy provides an overview of the flood risk issues in Cornwall and the potential sources of flooding. The strategy sets how the Council and partner authorities propose to work together to manage local flood risk from a variety of sources including surface water, groundwater, sewers, rivers, coastal and tidal flooding. It considers the pressures that are likely to influence future flood risk in Cornwall and sets out a series of themes to help manage these risks. “Following last winter’s storms, flooding is very much at the forefront of people’s minds” said

Edwina Hannaford. “We have been working on our flood strategy for some time and now, more than ever, it’s important that we address the issues but also recognise the limitations and constraints.” “We are keen to hear the views of businesses, community groups and residents, and to work with them to minimise the risks and damage caused by flooding. Prospective MP welcomes Government Housing Minister to West Cornwall Derek Thomas, the p r o s p e c t i v e Conservative MP for West Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly, welcomed Housing Minister, Kris Hopkins MP to a meeting of local community groups concerned with plans for large housing developments in west Cornwall. There was a good representation from across the constituency including residents from Porthleven, Helston, Breage, and Goldsithney. Kris Hopkins listened intently as members of the audience made their case for Government help to address local concern

about proposals to build large housing estates in small rural villages. Their concern for the future of their community and the negative impact on the natural environment was evident. Mr. Hopkins MP said: “Derek was right to raise this issue with me and I am glad to have the opportunity to meet so many local residents. It is important that local communities receive the help available to prepare their neighbourhood plan. They can then be confident of getting the right housing in the right place for the right people.” Derek Thomas said: “I

asked the Housing Minister to meet with these community groups because I completely get their concern and they need our help. Kris Hopkins gave some good advice and encouraged us to help Cornwall Council identify what housing is needed in our local communities. Audience Generosity raises a grand sum for Macmillan When musical stalwart George Shutter passed away earlier this year, Helston Theatre Company decided they wanted to do something to honour their treasured friend and Musical Director. Paul Blaber, the company's chairman, came up with a solution - an evening of entertainment with a One Act Play, Alternative Accommodation by Pam Valentine, followed by a Song and Dance selection entitled Musical Memories. Guest soloists Angela Thomas and Anthony Richards also entertained audiences as part of Musical Memories. Children from Landewednack School at The Lizard had a day they will never forget on Wednesday 18th June when they travelled to Taunton School to represent the far south west area in the "South West Tag to Twickenham Rugby Finals". The magnificent setting and beautiful building of Taunton school welcomed the children whose success in recent local tournaments earnt them their place in the area finals along with Trewirgie School in Redruth. Council welcomes funding to help disadvantaged three and four year olds in Cornwall News that Cornwall has been awarded £342,734 to help disadvantaged three and four year olds has been welcomed by Andrew Wallis, the Council’s Lead Member for Children and Young People. The funding is part of the Government’s Early Years Pupil Premium which is designed to help prevent children from low income families from falling behind before they start school. Sex may be a hot topic for young people, but discussing safe sex isn’t always high on the agenda. A new film starring comedian Kernow King has been produced in Cornwall to encourage conversations between young people aged over 15, and Relationships and Sexual Health Education (RSE) teachers. The film, which was launched at Cornwall College Camborne’s Union Building on 25 June, uses humour to get young people talking and provides important sexual health information in a humorous way. Produced by Cornwall Council’s Health Promotion Service, RCHT’s Sexual Health Services and Cornwall College, in partnership with Cornish film company Motion Film, the 20minute film is part of a new sexual health interactive resource – the first of its kind to be produced in England – which will be used in schools and further education colleges across Cornwall. ‘The Motion Farm and I were delighted to be able to make this light-hearted film, with a serious message,’ said the film’s leading man Ed Rowe, AKA Kernow King. ‘We didn't want to scare young people about sexual health, but look to bring it to the forefront of their thoughts when the time is right. It's also important for people to know that there is plenty of support available to them if they need it, and it's not terrifying!’ Cornwall’s Director of Public Health, Felicity Owen, said the film had been produced in direct response to calls from young people for more information about sexual health. ‘When they were asked for their views on sex education and support services, it became clear that there was very little

Relationships and Sexual Education available to them,’ she said. ‘They had fears and barriers to accessing what they saw as painful and intrusive sexual health testing services and wanted a current, informative and fun approach to RSE. The film has been developed by sexual health experts, FE tutors and young people in response to this request.’ Welcoming the development of the new interactive resource Andrew Wallis, Cornwall Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, added, ‘This new resource will make a real difference to our young people. Not only will it help them to be healthier, it will also encourage them to have the kind of conversations that really matter.’ As well as leading man Kernow King, the film also features students from Cornwall College, with a professional actress playing the love interest. Nat Mitchell, Student Liaison Officer and Marketing Coordinator from Cornwall College, said, ‘It has been a great pleasure to work with the Health Promotion Service, Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, and Kernow King to produce a fit-for-purpose, connected and fun sexual health resource for the young people of Cornwall. Our students were a credit to themselves and worked professionally with the production crew.’ Some of the filming took place at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust Sexual Health Hub. ‘This was a great opportunity for us at the Hub to provide young people with important, relevant information about sexual health in a fun way and dispel any myths or concerns they may have about attending our clinics,’ said Kathryn Eccleston, Interim Lead for Sexual Health.

‘The Hub at Truro is open to everyone. We have dropin sessions during the week where people can just come in or appointments are available. It is a confidential service and we are able to send results by text message. For those who can’t get to the Truro centre, we also hold clinics in community hospitals around the county. In Cornwall, the message is getting through, with the latest figures showing cases of Chlamydia for 15–24year-olds falling 15 per cent last year. Cornwall’s average rate of teenage pregnancy (under 18) fell from 30.6 per 1,000 women in March 2012 to 26.2 per 1,000 women in March 2013. Grace Charles, Student Liaison Officer from Cornwall College, has already used the new resource to discuss the importance of relationships, respect, individual choice and self-esteem with students. ‘The resource is a fantastic ice-breaker, relieving students from feeling that they can’t talk about safe sex,’ she said. ‘No more embarrassment, instead it enables students to confidently engage in open, nonjudgemental discussion with their peers and professionals.’ Schools, colleges and youth organisations across Cornwall will start using the resource over the coming year. Agencies work together to improve living standards for migrant workers New guidance notes and a caravan checklist aimed at the owners of accommodation provided for migrant workers have been put together by a multi-agency group including Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Devon and Cornwall Police migrant worker team, Cornwall Council, the Home Office Immigration department, The Gangmasters Licensing Authority and the Health and Safety Executive. The new guidance, which includes a list of caravan checks to be conducted regularly; a suggested tenancy agreement and a poster for tenants giving pictorial safety advice, will be personally delivered by representatives from each of the agencies. PCSO Bev Faull of Devon and Cornwall Police said:

“Following multi-agency visits to premises in Cornwall where caravans are provided for migrant workers who work on the farms, we realised there was a short fall in legislation covering the standards and use of such caravans. All the agencies noticed that there was room for improvement regarding maintaining sites and living conditions and it was felt that a joint approach to solving these issues would be the best way forward so we have worked together to provide written guidance so that the owners of the accommodation could be made aware of their obligations in the standards required as well as giving the tenants information about their rights and the standards that they could expect. So far we have identified 27

places where such caravan accommodation is provided and we will be visiting all of them to deliver the new guidance and to talk through any issues. We have also found some sites with good standards and we wanted to build on these good examples.” One good accommodation provider is Steve Berryman at Paul’s Green Farm, Townsend who says: “It’s a good scheme which safeguards tenants and ourselves, improving safety standards.” All agencies involved will be delivering in person the caravans packs to the sites over the coming weeks, so expect a visit or contact PCSO 30268 Bev Faull on 07525 408028 if you don’t receive a pack or you think you would like to receive a pack.

INGREDIENTS

2 sheets shop-bought shortcrust pastry 250g Gruyere cheese, grated 500g sliced leeks (white and light green parts only) 6 plum tomatoes, sliced 4 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese sea salt and black pepper to taste

METHOD 1. Place both pastry sheets on baking trays lined with baking parchment. Sprinkle each with half of the Gruyere cheese, leaving 2.5cm around the edges. Arrange leeks over the cheese, then top with the tomato slices. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Top with remaining Gruyere cheese. Fold edges over filling. 2. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-22

minutes or until the pastry is a light golden brown. Allow to rest for about 10 minutes or more before slicing. Serve warm. Parmesan cheese Parmesan cheese is not truly vegetarian, as it contains animal rennet. To make this dish 100% vegetarian, omit the cheese or find a suitable vegetarian substitute made without animal rennet. Cornwall honours the armed forces Pool near Camborne hosted its biggest event in years when serving and veteran military personnel descended on the historic mining town for Cornwall Armed Forces Day 2014. In a celebration of the Armed Forces across Cornwall, past, present and the future came together at Heartlands Mining Heritage centre to raise public awareness of the contribution the Military has in the past and continues to give to the Nation. It was also an opportunity for the community as a whole to show its appreciation for the commitment the services have given over the years. Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose was represented by a cross section of the Squadrons and Units that train and operate from the Fleet Air Arm’s West Cornwall Base. Taking time out from the rigors of planning for future exercises and deployments, interactive and hands–on exhibits were readily accessible to all. “We are always pleased to be able take the opportunity to show the public what we do”, said Chief Petty Officer Aircraft Handler John "Soups" Campbell. “Armed Forces day is a wonderful chance for the public to see what we do and chat with the men and women of the Fleet Air Arm at Culdrose.” At Cornwall Armed Forces Day this year, three Operational Service Medals (OSMs) for service in

Afghanistan were presented to Airmen currently stationed at RAF St Mawgan near Newquay. From RNAS Culdrose, Leading Airman Aircraft Handler Shaun Howells who lives in Helston received his Long Service and Good Conduct (LS&GC) medal from the guest of honour for the Day, Rear Admiral Sir Robert Woodard, KCVO, DL. Shaun was supported by his proud wife Danielle and their children Imogen and Ollie. The Navy's LS&GC medal is presented to Naval Service personnel who having completed over 15 years reckonable service and on their Commanding Officer’s recommendation, are deemed worthy of the award and has shown the highest standards of the Service. The fine and sunny weather brought out the crowds who were treated to a spectacular display of Flags and Standards from the British Legion, Cadets and other veteran organisations on parade. "Today is a day of commemoration and celebration. We remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and those who are here celebrating with you all", said Rear Admiral Woodard in his speech to the parade. "It's a day when the public can think about and support the armed forces of this country. It's very pleasing to see so many young people here today representing the Cadet Forces and the Culdrose Volunteer Band who are the cherry on the icing on the cake."

Veteran aviator retires after 41 year flying career Continued from front page “I feel privileged to have worked with some fantastic people and shall miss the unique challenges of Naval Aviation.” The Commanding Officer of 750 Naval Air Squadron, Lieutenant Commander Craig Whitson-Fay said: “Although John retired from the Navy 18 years ago he still typifies all the characteristics of a Fleet Air Arm Officer; a consummate professional with a ‘can do’ attitude and the ability to maintain a sense of humour when it all goes wrong. John will be missed by all of us on the Squadron but he can rest assured that his legacy will live on in the countless number of Fleet Air Arm Officers that he has trained and influenced over the years.” Upon landing on from his last Flight in a new King-Air 350ER ‘Avenger’ of 750 NAS, John was greeted and congratulated by Captain Mark Garratt the Commanding Officer of RNAS Culdrose. Many other well wishers from the Navy’s Cornish Air Station turned up to give John a rousing send off. 750 NAS has been the home of Observer training for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm continuously for over 60 years. The training is now managed commercially by Ascent Flight Training, augmented by Royal Navy staff Instructors. A course of four Observer students joins approximately every ten weeks, remaining with the Squadron for sixteen weeks before joining an Operational Conversion Unit to train to Operate Maritime Patrol Helicopters such as Merlin Mk 2, Sea King Mk 5 & 7 or Wildcat.

Child Labour Is Great…For You! Are you a small business owner and have children? Have you ever thought of using your children in your business to lower your tax bill? If not, you’re missing out on a great opportunity. Child labour, that is your child’s labour, sweat and hard work, is not to be ignored. We’ve all heard about child labour in the Third World, working 18 hour-days with poor lighting and chained to the floor. I hope you are glad to hear that I am not going to recommend this. I am recommending though that you employ your child and pay them. But before I talk about how it can be a tax advantage, let’s first of all talk about how it will be beneficial for your child. Work is tough these days, and experience is everything. I believe children should learn the work ethic and the value of money – and learn early! So by exploiting (sorry, employing) your child you are in fact setting them up for life. My Mum forced me to do it. When I was teenager I worked on “Jim’s Fruit & Veg” stall at the Helston Market. And I had to work at my Mum’s wine bar, Fig’s, taking out rubbish and the like. No work, no food was my Mum’s motto. Only joking. But what is true is that my Mum never claimed the cost of my hard labour on her tax returns. What a wasted tax saving opportunity from my Mum! Now, your child’s wage is an allowable expense for your business. You reduce your profits and therefore pay less tax. If you merely give your child a new computer worth £500 then you are paying from after tax profits – you have to make up to (if you are a basic rate taxpayer) £705 in revenue from your customers to pay £500 in cash. By paying a salary to your child and your child buys the computer

themselves then it costs you (or your business) just £500 – you save £205. And your child is getting great work experience. It is a win-win. So don’t just give that X-Box to your child, or a new bike, those Nike shoes or even pocket money – make your child work for it! And you save money in tax. But it must be a commercial wage. You cannot pay your child £30,000 a year to do some filing two hours a week. The HMRC will be all over you. As always, seek professional advice! Lastly, there are rules to employing children, even your own children. Red tape and bureaucratic obstacles like they must be over 13 and can only work 2 hours a day on a school day – go to Cornwall Council’s webpage “Guidance on Employment of School Age Children” and check out the rules. It’ll give you all the information you need. So you see, child labour can be great: both for you and your child! And it needn’t stop there. Do you have elderly parents who you support through their retirement? Well, no more! Get them off the settee in to your office and working for their money – and you reduce your tax liability! You justify it, same as with your child, that it is good for them – keeping active is good for the mind and all that – better than Sudoku! Who can argue? Recruitment of an independent member representing Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to the Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Panel A community spirited person who lives in Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly and wants to influence policing and community safety issues is being given the chance to join the Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Panel. Recruitment is underway for an independent member for the Panel which is part of the policing arrangements for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Plymouth City Council is the host council for the Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Panel which is made up of representatives from all councils in the area.

The Panel maintains a 'check and balance' on the performance of the directly elected Police and Crime Commissioner. The aim of the Police and Crime Commissioner is to cut crime, set local police and crime objectives, engage with the public and hold the Chief Constable to account. Unbelievable! Sturgess takes 5 for 9 as Helston skittle Troon for 28 Cricket Helston's return to County Division 1 meant that many of the old local derby's would once again be able to take place and no contest was more eagerly awaited than the visit of the "old enemy" Troon to Beacon Park. Not only has there been a rich history fine contests between the two clubs but a number of players have had a "foot in both camps". The total annihilation of the visitors by a rampant Helston team could not have been imagined and took only 75 minutes! The main damage was done by youngster Tommy Sturgess who started his career at Helston but for the past few seasons has played at Troon. He opened the bowling ad returned the remarkable figures of 6 overs 5 for 9. He was ably assisted by Jordan Fulton 3 for 19 and Tom Retallack who bowled 3 balls and

took 2 wickets! Former Helston player Tom Mitchell was the only Troon player not to get out. Helston never hang around when they are batting and it took the only 19 balls for them to pass their target with former Troon player Dan Jenkin striking 20no. A fantastic 10 wicket win for Helston. Mullion were at home to Hayle and produced a fine 26 run victory. Batting first they posted 147 with Jim Pearson 66no and Dan Johnson 30. The visitors were all out for 121 with Dan Johnson having the superb figures of 3 for 7 and Jack Casley 3 for 34. Porthleven lost at Perranporth. The 50th anniversary of Surtees’ 1964 F1 title was marked with a special run up the hill in his Ferrari 158 in tandem with Raikkonen’s 2007 title-winning F2007 that the Finn drove right behind him. machine – formerly raced by seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher – while Damon Hill was reunited with the Williams FW18-Renault in which he claimed the 1996 title. British MotoGP aces Bradley Smith and Scott Redding jetted in overnight from the Dutch TT at Assen to entertain fans of two-wheeled motor sport. Smith rode an ex-Kenny Roberts Yamaha YZR 500 while Redding – last year’s Moto2 runner-up – was on a Honda NSR 500 raced in period by two-time 500cc world champion Freddie Spencer. POOR PERFORMANCES on the pitch by England even seemed to infect used car buyers with the summertime blues, car information experts CAP have revealed. CAP crunched the numbers on consumer visits to its car valuation and motoring costs website during England’s short-lived campaign. They wanted to see if England’s endeavours had any more impact on people’s plans to spend money than they did on Italy, Uruguay or Costa Rica’s chances of going through. The results surprised even CAP’s analysts, when car valuation requests at cap.co.uk slumped by almost 60% during England’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay – and didn’t recover for over 24 hours. In contrast, the goalless – and some might say pointless – match with Costa Rica had no discernible impact at all on searches for used car prices. CAP’s Mike Hind explains: “We did the analysis partly for a bit of fun but also because used car dealers often complain that big international sporting events tend to bring a reduction in trade. “A poor showing in international

sport has also been shown historically to put a dent in the losing country’s stock market in the immediate aftermath. We wondered whether there was going to be any clear impact in our own part of the economy. “Of course there were a lot more people glued to the first and second matches than looking at car values on the internet but the real surprise came on the morning after England v Uruguay. Fewer than half as many people as normal seemed to have any appetite for looking up car prices and motoring cost details. “We had to smile when we saw no change at all in website activity during or after the Costa Rica game. It was clear by then that normal life had resumed. “What surprised us most of all was that we saw exactly the same reduction from Scottish users of our site. We expected to see business as usual among the Scots – maybe even a small rise – when England’s World Cup hopes were dashed. But even motorists north of the border didn’t return in their usual numbers until the Monday morning.”
