Family butchers and fundraiser team up for charity Local family butchers Scorse Foods has recently teamed up with the very pro-active charity fundraiser Naila Henry to raise money Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospice South West which offers support, care and help to for families whose children are living with life-limiting or lifethreatening conditions. Scorse Foods had collection boxes in the shop and also raised money through donations made by their very generous staff, many of whom decided

to make a donation rather than sending Christmas cards to each other last year. Naila is additionally carrying on her own fundraising that is aid of the Hospice which is also known as Little Harbour as well as through various events including a black tie and cocktail dress event at the Falmouth Hotel on Friday 20th March with raffle prizes to include a Miniâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;Cooper weekend experience, personal yoga session and weekend stay with breakfast at

the Falmouth Hotel. She will also be running the London Marathon this year, something she has made history doing before as has a medical condition herself and was the first person on the active transplant list to have run the marathon. She has had a failed transplant since then and this year will be the first person known to have run the marathon as failed transplant receiver.

Former Oliver’s employee joins Carpet Connection Carpet Connection, Helston’s specialist flooring shop, has kicked off the New Year by welcoming a new member of staff to the team. Jeremy Richards has joined the company as Senior Sales Advisor. Jeremy’s move to Carpet Connection follows over twenty years’ service at Oliver & Son furniture store in Coinagehall Street which closed its doors for the final time just before Christmas. During his time there, Jeremy was heavily involved with the flooring side of the business making him the ideal candidate for his new role. Interesting Taxation and Business Advice By Brendan Thomas BSc ACA Gandhi Stole Chicken Nuggets (With Chilli Sauce) At Flambards! I read recently on the Internet about a UK charity that had a lot of money stolen from it. When I say a lot I mean over £100,000. That is a lot in anyone’s vocabulary. And I am sure there are many charities that have had money stolen. It will not be an isolated incident. Indeed, I believe charities are more prone to fraud and theft then commercial businesses. Why do I make such an outrageous and egregious assertion? Well, there are a number of reasons, and the first revolves around people being just so lovely. The boss of the aforementioned charity said about the Treasurer (who was the thief!) that she was just the most wonderful, friendly and funny person. She could not have been more helpful. And the killer blow came when the head of the charity said, “she became my best friend.” People who volunteer or work at charities tend to be nice people. Fact! Now, believe me, just because someone is “nice” does not mean they don’t have the capability to steal. As I have written before, given the opportunity anyone has the capacity to steal, even Mahatma Gandhi. “No!” I hear you cry, “Not Gandhi”. But yes I exclaim, even Gandhi. He would have justified his criminal behaviour in some way or another. “I am a modern day Robin Hood”…or “I did it for the greater good” Yeah, yeah Mahatma, you can make all the excuses in the World, but theft is still theft! Indeed, take me at Flambards many years ago when I was a 15 year-old kid. I worked in the takeaway restaurant. At the end of the day we all used to help ourselves to a “free” burger. Was this not theft? Where does it end? It starts with a burger, moves to fries, and we end up with chicken nuggets with chilli sauce being stolen.

If Mahatma worked at Flambards, I am sure he would have joined us in helping himself to some chicken nuggets with chilli sauce dripping from them. He wouldn’t have been able to resist. And who knows, (not) knowing Gandhi, I am sure he would have had some fries as well! And I would not put it pass Mother Theresa helping herself too if she worked with us. “By feeding myself, I am feeding all the poor and disadvantaged in the World”, she would exclaim, as she wiped the chilli sauce from the side of her mouth. Who are you kidding, Mother Theresa? Now, my point is that we are ALL capable of theft and fraud given the situation, given the opportunity, even Mahatma and Mother Theresa. No one is immune! The second reason charities are vulnerable to fraud, is that because they are a charity and receive donations from the public, they

believe it is their duty to conduct the finance department in an amateurish manner and on the cheap. They believe it is honourable to not “waste” money on those bean counters, those number crunchers. The money must be directed towards the frontline. You hear this argument all of the time. But it is a fallacious and misconceived argument. All that happens is that checks and balances are not put in place, controls are flimsy, and then money is stolen. And when it happens, the Trustees feign shock and horror. How did this happen? Why us? But if you leave money lying around, people will steal it (given enough time). Not they may, they WILL steal it. So please do not cry on my shoulder after the event, do something to minimize or prevent a significant fraud now! How? Checks and balances! For example, have two bank accounts: a current account and a savings account. Both accounts have separate authorised signatories. Payments to suppliers are made from the current account, up to £100 one signatory, and over £100 two signatories. And have two completely different signatories for the savings account. Now, to steal substantial money would now require 4 people to collaborate – this is very, very unlikely! If you want proper governance, ensure you have a chartered accountant as one of your Trustees: a bean counter, a bookkeeper, a number cruncher. If you do, you will significantly increase your chances of avoiding that material fraud. So, if Mahatma Gandhi or Mother Theresa volunteers to work at your charity, do not fall in this most dangerous of traps and think they are just the most wonderfully nice people in the World and would never steal any money (or chicken nuggets). If you do, Gandhi or Mother Theresa will make you look like a fool, as they laugh at your naivety and wipe the chilli sauce from their face! Now, I must make it very clear, I am not accusing ALL charities of incompetence and neglect. I am just saying there are a sizeable number that are not taking seriously the risk of fraud and theft. They are trusting Gandhi and Mother Theresa. Don’t! Give yourself a pinch and think chicken nuggets with chilli sauce. 50 years on people continue to ignore seat belt laws at their peril, warns the IAM The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is warning that despite 50 years of seat belt laws, far too many drivers and passengers are still putting themselves and others in great danger by not wearing seat belts. The first seat belt law came into force in January 1965, which saw all new cars in the UK required to have seat belt anchorage points on the outer front seats – and paved the way for far-reaching compulsory seat belt wearing laws in the decades after. Statistics from the Department of Transport show that of the 232 car occupants killed in 2013

(for which seatbelt data was recorded), 45 were not wearing a seat belt – a shocking 19%, or nearly one-fifth. According to Safer Roads, 2,000 people a year are saved by wearing seat belts. They say in the event of an accident if unrestrained, you will hit the windscreen, or the front seat in the case of a rear seat passenger at a force of 30 to 60 times your own body weight. The effectiveness of seat belts as a life saving device is without question. Research has found that for drivers seat belts are 50% effective at preventing fatal injuries, 45% effective at preventing seri-

ous injuries and 25% effective at preventing minor injuries. It also found for front seat passengers, seat belts are 45% effective at preventing fatal or serious injuries, and 20% effective at preventing minor injuries. Quite apart from safety factors, drivers caught without a seat belt face on-the-spot fines of £100 and three penalty points. If prosecuted, the maximum fine is £500. Back in 1965 all new cars sold were required to have seat belt anchorage points for the front outer seats. In 1967 the law was changed so all new cars were required to have seat belts fitted. In 1968, seat belts were required

to be retro-fitted to all cars sold from 1965. The biggest development in seat belt development came in 1983 when it became compulsory for front seat occupants to wear one. In 1989 it became compulsory for all children under 14 to wear a seat belt in the rear, and finally in 1991 it was required that all rear seat occupants wear a seat belt. After the 1983 law was passed, there was an immediate 25% reduction in driver fatalities and a 29% reduction in fatal injuries among front seat passengers. Despite that, the 2013 statistics show there is still a section of the driving population that con-

Kevin Delaney, IAM head of road safety, said: “The biggest problem is complacency. “Quite simply people feel it will never happen to them. They think if they are driving locally and at a low speed they will be OK. Statistics show that many accidents not only take place at low speeds but also within a few miles of home – so people are mistaken if they think that makes them safer.” Although putting on a seat belt is habitual to many car occupants today, evidence from the DfT’s THINK! campaign has found that

people are less likely to belt up on short or familiar journeys. Kevin added: “The trouble is if people are not wearing a seat belt and find themselves heading towards an accident, it is far too late to do anything about it.” He called for continued campaigning by government, police and road safety bodies to ensure the issue of wearing seatbelts remains a priority message. “We need to keep spreading the message particularly on rear seat belt use. And if people don’t take heed of it, they will end up as a Department of Transport accident statistic.”

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that white was the most popular colour for new cars registered in the UK in 2014 for the second year running. Of the 2,476,435 new cars registered in 2014, 22.2% were white – representing the highest proportion of white cars

registered in any year since records began in 1996. The colour’s recordbreaking popularity follows a strong upturn in the uptake of white cars, over the past decade. In 2010, white cars accounted for just under 10% of new car registrations, making it the sixth most popular car colour, with black and silver cars the best-selling. In 2005,

less than 1% of the UK’s new car buyers chose white. In 2014, black cars took second place followed by grey, taking 19% and 14% of the market respectively. Silver – the second most popular colour in 2010 with almost a quarter of registrations – has now slipped to sixth place, accounting for 13% of the total new car market.
