Boxes full of festive treats have set off from Cornwall to various destinations across the Globe today. Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose is following a tradition carried out 100 years ago in WW1 and sending care packages to deployed personnel to let them know that they are being thought of at Christmastime. Culdrose based Sailors, Engineers and Aircrew currently serving on operations in the Gulf, the South Atlantic and helping the fight against Ebola in Sierra Leone will all receive parcels from the Helston based Air Station. Chief Petty Officer Michael McMahon and a team from the Logistics and Manning Departments have been making up the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Care Boxesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that will be delivered in time for Christmas via the British Forces Postal Office. Chief Petty Officer McMahon said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The parcels will be sent everywhere that we have people deployed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; across the Globe whether they are serving on land or at on ships sea. We will have 266 personnel deployed overseas this Christmas and we hope that every single person will receive something from us.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Culdrose Welfare Committee funded the parcels, and we have

worked closely with Nikki Walker from Helston Tesco to purchase the goods. Nikki was really helpful in getting us the best deals possible â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we have got a lot of 3 for 2 deals!â&#x20AC;? Deployed personnel were asked what they would like to receive and so boxes contain a variety of goodies including Mince Pies, Christmas Puddings, packets of Custard and Christmas Crackers. A surprising treat from winter, boxes of ice lollipops, were added following a special request from those who served in Afghanistan last year. Chief Petty Officer McMahon added: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are expecting that the ice pops will go down very well. I did quite a lot of research into what personnel would like. All those who have been deployed overseas in hot climates said that ice pops were a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;God sendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;? Captain Mark Garratt, Commanding Officer of Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose made his own personal contribution by hand-signing Christmas cards to go in each of the boxes. He said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sending gifts to those serving overseas is not a new initiative â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we know that the Royal Family sent gift tins to British soldiers fighting in the trenches 100 years ago. However, it is still very important today that serving

personnel know we are thinking of them during the festive period. We currently have Sailors from RNAS Culdrose deployed across the world from the Gulf area, to West Africa and the South Atlantic. Serving away from friends and family at Christmastime is hard, but often necessary and it is really important to us that our deployed personnel know that they are in our thoughts.â&#x20AC;? Local school children, part of the HMS Heroes group have also made a contribution to the boxes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; homemade fudge. Petty Officer Dave Robson, from 824 Naval Air Squadron and the HMS Heroes representative at Helston Community College said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our special little group from Helston Community College decided they wanted to make something nice for those Culdrose personnel who will unfortunately not be with their families at Christmas due to service commitments. Utilising the resources of the College Home Economics department and funds made from previous cookie sales; five year 8 children, with a little help from a baby sister in year 6 from Wendron Primary School, made a huge batch of delicious Cornish fudge to send as a little, sweet reminder of home.â&#x20AC;?

Cornwall is awarded more than £900,000 from the Government’s Transformational Challenge Award Cornwall has been awarded just under £1 million of Government funding to develop an exciting project which will see the Council and the voluntary and community sector working together to improve the lives of local people. Cornwall has been awarded £935,000 as part of the Government’s Transformation Challenge Award scheme which is designed to encourage places that have ambitious plans to work in partnership across the public sector and with the voluntary and community sector or the private sector to redesign services. Welcoming news of the announcement the Leader of Cornwall Council John Pollard said “The Transformation Challenge Award will play a key role in helping to improve the lives of people in Cornwall, with the voluntary and community sector playing an increasingly important part in the delivery of Council services, as we have stated in our new Council Strategy. This could range from ensuring that people with complex needs receive a package of support through a single contact, or aiming to resolve simple enquiries at the first point of contact. “The aim is to create and co-design services that match people’s individual circumstances and lifestyles rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach. It will also help to build

capacity within communities so that they can take more control over, and run services, and get more involved in the decisions that affect them.” “I am delighted the Government has recognised the strength of Cornwall’s bid and look forward to working with the voluntary and community organisations to develop this project” said Paul Masters, the Council’s Corporate Director for Communities and Organisational Development. “The aim of the project is to drive better value and efficiency from public money by improving the overall understanding of commissioned services and contracts, specifically focussing on those delivered by the VCSE sector. We will be working with the voluntary and community sector to better understand the needs of local people and co design services with users”. Mark Richardson, the Chief Executive of Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum said “This gives charities and social enterprises a strong opportunity to influence the redesign of services paid for by the Council and delivered by the voluntary sector. If we get this right, we can protect and help those most in need, stop more people escalating into crisis situations and provide better support which is more joined up and easier to access.”

Initial sketch designs for town centre improvements will be on public display at Olivers Furniture Shop, 9-11 Coinagehall Street on Friday 5th December 8.00 am to 6.30 pm and Saturday 6th December 8.00 am to 13.00 pm. This will provide the first opportunity to view and comment on the initial designs for key areas which local people and businesses would like to improve, based on the results of a public consultation carried out by the Town Council. The exciting designs produced by Meiloci, a Truro-based landscape architecture practice with Helston connections, have been influenced by a successful ‘walkabout’ design workshop held on 7 November, which was attended by 26 stakeholders representing public, business, community and educational interests within the community. The drop-in sessions will be really informal, and anybody with an interest is encouraged to call in to view the designs, make verbal or written comments, and have discussions with the design team

over a drink (sorry, only non-alcoholic) and biscuits. Ballot papers will be available to enable people to indicate their preferences for the project options. Following the production of concept designs Meiloci will also be estimating budget costs and assessing the project options against a range of criteria, including commercial impact, deliverability, and value for money. These assessments, along with the public ballot results will be used to make informed decisions about immediate priorities for spending the s. 106 public realm funding as well as longer term aspirations. There will be further opportunities for local residents, businesses and groups to contribute to the design process before the Public

Summer fundraiser exceeds expectations Helston ladies, Ali James and Heather Triggs, visited the Royal Cornwall Hospital last week to handover a fantastic donation of more than £6,000 towards cancer care. Ali and Heather have personal experience of breast cancer and got together with a dual purpose of fundraising and awarenessraising, both keen to encourage women to have regular checks and take up invitations for breast screening. During the summer they organised an afternoon ‘Fun Day, Sunday’ with cream teas, a raffle and other outdoor activities in Heather’s garden. Together with match-funding from Marks and Spencer and Lloyds Bank, the event raised a terrific £6520 which has been split between the Headland Unit, Mermaid and Sunrise Centres at the hospital.

Ali said, “We’d like the donation to go to the little things that will help to make breast cancer treatment easier for patients and staff, wherever there is a need. The event was so well supported and we want to thank everyone who came and contributed so generously to make it such a success.” As well as voluntary donations for the cream teas far exceeding expectations, there were also more than

forty raffle prizes, with everything kindly donated by local businesses. Ali and Heather are keen to continue their support and whilst handing over their donation from their summer event they also brought in a contribution to the Christmas Fayre which takes place on 4th December in the H a e m a t o lo g y / O n c o lo g y Clinic at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

a chorister with A Cappella until his untimely death in May this year. His wife, Joyce Edwards, will be singing some solos at the concert of Christmas Music. Joyce, started a Memorial Fund to provide defibrillators in Porthleven and now MEF have just ordered their third one which will be situated near the harbour. Two more defibrillators are needed to cover the village. TUESDAY 9TH DECEMBER The Mullion Handbell Ringers are giving a concert in St. Mellanus Church, Mullion at 6pm. There will be refreshments afterwards, and any donations will be given to the church funds. The church does have wheelchair access. THURSDAY 11TH DECEMBER Helston Friends of the Earth Eco Fair 9.00am - 2.00pm at The Guildhall, Helston. I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves on Friday night at the Helston Christmas Lights Switch-On. Thousands of people poured into town to experience the event. It was busier than Flora Day! The wind calmed down and the skies remained clear to provide perfect weather conditions. Traders, coffee shops and food outlets have spoken of busy sales throughout the evening and the pubs were packed too. There was a good mix of local craft stalls as well as charity stalls and fun rides for the kids. Santa's Grotto by the Museum was hugely popular. Charlotte, Maria and their elves were rushed off their feet all evening and the real reindeer by the cannon in Church Street were well received too. There's lots of people I'd like to thank for their involvement in the event. In no particular order, and apologies if I forget anyone! Amanda Boxer and a large team of volunteers who helped set up and pack away the gazebos. Amanda also worked tirelessly with me and Mark Upton to help plan the layout of the stalls and allocate pitches to the visiting traders. Derek, Ian, JP and Bob for constructing and painting the wider and higher centre stage, and RGB Porthleven for generously donating materials for us to extend the size of the stage. M.D.G. Mobile Disco for providing the PA system on the stage. Helston Town Band, The Culdrose Military Wives Choir and Samba Celtica for entertainment on the stage, and Mark Upton for compering prior to switch-on. Borlase & Co Solicitors for sponsoring the fantastic fireworks display, also Bobby and Eva for letting off the fireworks, not forgetting Tristan who climbed to the top of the Monument to ignite the first

rocket. Nitoe Security for manning the road closures, also the Police and Fire Brigade for their attendance during the evening. Bob, Tim and Wilf for putting up the small Christmas trees and brackets on the shopfronts, and Allye and Greg for painstakingly attaching the light sets to the trees. Culdrose for loaning crowd control barriers and big foot cones, and Harlequin Design for donating signage. Scott and Fred for collecting through the evening by Lloyds Bank. Donations can still be dropped into me at J C Williams Furnishers, 10 Meneage Street, Helston TR13 8AB and will be gratefully received. Lots of businesses around the town donate free electric to power the lights. We were hampered by poor weather last year so several traders and fun rides etc understandably didn't attend at the last minute but we've got lots planned to make the 12th an enjoyable family evening so make a note in your diaries and we hope to see you all again soon! Dutch Navy get a warm welcome at Culdrose The skies around Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose will be home to a new buzz over the coming weeks as Dutch Navy helicopters begin training from the West Cornwall Air Station. Three NH 90 Maritime helicopters from 7 (NL) Squadron of the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) along with 60 aircrew and engineers have arrived at RNAS Culdrose for a three week training period working with Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST) at Devonport. It will also offer a chance for the Dutch to hone their maritime skills alongside the Fleet Air Arm's Merlin Mk2s that call RNAS Culdrose home. "It's an absolutely brilliant area to train in," said Lieutenant Pieter Agema, a support officer attached to 7 (NL) Sqn from their De Kooy Air Base near Den

Helder in Holland. "We've been coming here every six months for a good many years now and we always get a very warm welcome from our British hosts. We are here primarily to train our aircrew for frontline service with the Fleet. Culdrose has always proved to be an excellent base for everything we need to do and offers a happy environment to do it in.” The Dutch are also taking this opportunity to assess some of the new equipment carried onboard their NH 90 helicopters. Not only will they be training up a number of Observers and Aircrewmen to manage the systems, they are looking to utilise the unique training that FOST provides. By co-incidence there are three RNLN ships training at Devonport alongside other NATO vessels and

they see the benefits of working with multiple platforms in complex scenarios. Lieutenant Pieter Agema continues, "Working together with the Royal Navy and hunting real submarines is a great bonus for us and our training, you can't get this kind of training anywhere else in Europe, but you can here." And it's not all work for the sailors and airman from Holland. Many of them have been coming for years and have fallen in love with the charms of this particular corner of the South West. "Cornwall is fantastic. It's a real privilege to be here. It's a beautiful place for walking along the coastal paths and biking in the summer when the weather's really nice and in the winter when it's not, it's still beautiful," said Pieter.

Landewednack Student wins ingredient competition

Children from Landewednack School and the adjoining Little Lizards Childrens Centre enjoyed a day in the kitchen recently when chefs from Chartwells Catering visited the school for a day of cooking fun. Chartwells are the company who provide the school meals cooked each day on site by Landewednack school cook Helen Matthews. They ran a competition last term for every school they cater for to come up with a special tasty ingredient to add to their cookie mixture. Matthew Bray from Landewednack was crowned

the winner with his "Chocanutta" cookie being voted as the best and tastiest. In return the school was awarded a day of cooking and cookery demonstrations provided by Chartwells Food Development Chef Paul Smith. Headteacher at the school Louise Jones congratulated Matthew on producing his delicious cookie and thanked Chartwells for the fantastic day they provided for all of the children in the school and the nursery.

The Culdrose Lynx U11 football team were in action on Sunday 30th November when they travelled to Carharrick for their next league encounter. The Lynx started the game the stronger side and never faltered throughout the match. They opened the scoring midway through the first half with a superbly taken goal from Nathan Holmes and despite having the majority of the possession that is how the score remained at the half time break.

The opening minutes of the second half saw the Lynx extend their lead with a well taken strike from Jake Hunkin. Though the home team managed to pull a goal back the Lynx proved to be to strong and went onto to score three more goals, another from Jake, James Salter and Kieran Ludkin. Sealing the three points and a well deserved victory.

Rural charities urged to Graham’s Garage apply for Community Transport Minibus Fund MoT Testing - Class IV & VII Unit 1B, Treskewes Ind. Est. St Keverne, Helston, TR12 6PE

Hundreds of community transport organisations across the country are now being invited to apply to a new £25 million fund to provide them with new minibuses. The Department for Transport has now published full criteria for applying for the fund (www.gov.uk/government/publications/community- transport-minibusfund) and organisations across England can begin to prepare their applications. Community groups have until 15 January 2015 to apply, with early bids being welcomed. Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin said: “Local voluntary transport providers give so much to their local area and our community minibus fund will help support their work further. This large fund will secure hundreds of minibuses

and we are offering a long application time to give everyone a chance to apply. “I encourage community transport organisations across England to begin preparing their applications now so we can receive as many as possible. “The online application process will be available on the Department for Transport’s website from Monday 1 December 2014. The community transport minibus fund is focused on existing voluntary and third sector organisations that already have a permit to run not-for-profit services of benefit to the local community. “Smaller operators and those who help out in rural areas will be favoured in the scheme. Each bidder will need to undertake that the vehicle will be used only for voluntary services and will not be used to compete for bus service contracts.

Landlords rated highly by tenants Despite the bad reputation often thrust upon landlords, new research has found that they are actually rated far more highly amongst tenants than expected. A poll of UK adults conducted by Saga Home Insurance found that 77 per cent of tenants rated their current landlord as ‘good’ or ‘excellent,’ with a mere 8 per cent claiming that their landlord was poor. Whilst 56 per cent of ten-

ants said that their landlord could do more to help them, 55 per cent of landlords understand the importance of a quick response to any tenant enquires. 32 per cent of landlords possess a 24 hour emergency cover that tenants can call on. The research also sought to find out the most common complaints experienced by landlords and tenants. 23 per cent of tenants were most likely to complain about hard to reach landlords, whilst 21

per cent would be dissatisfied with poor quality tradesmen used for repairs. In contrast, landlords were found to be most likely to complain about outstanding rent payments (37 per cent) or damage to the property (32 per cent). 20 per cent of landlords would be annoyed by tenants vacating the property with little or no notice. Head of home insurance at Saga, Sue Green, said: ‘In the age of housing shortages and escalating rents, landlords

have been getting some bad headlines, but the research shows the extent to which this portrayal is unfair. The vast majority of landlords are conscientious and ethical, although tenants do believe more can be done.’ She continued: ‘Anyone who is a landlord should consider whether there might be more that they could do to make things easier for their tenants, which will be beneficial to all involved.’

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR A PERFECT TURKEY ROAST THIS CHRISTMAS To ensure your turkey is completely cooked, insert a clean skewer into the thickest part of the thigh. Leave for at least 1 minute, if the juices run clear the turkey is cooked, if they run pinkish, return to the oven and cook for a little longer. Allow to rest (which makes the meat easier to carve), lightly covered with foil in a warm place for at least 20-30 minutes before carving and serving. Alternatively, test with a temperature probe, which must be 72 degrees C or above in the thickest part of the breast for 2 mins.
