Salt of the Earth book sales over £18,600 The message is simple, give a book for Christmas and support this wonderful charity! In only four weeks over 900 copies of SALT OF THE EARTH by DAVID & JAN PENPRASE have been sold! The new book on the fishermen and people of the port of Newlyn is not only a unique archive, but is in support of the Fishermen’s Mission. This heavyweight 160 page A4 book contains a collection of nearly 400 monochrome portraits and biographies of people within this thriving village. After hearing about David and Jan’s successful Harbour to Harbour books on Porthleven, they were asked by Julian Waring of The Fishermen’s Mission, to do the

project .Working from two net lofts over the summer and working totally on a voluntary basis has enabled all of the book’s retail price of £20 to go directly in aid of The Fishermen’s Mission.

The Lizard Lifeboat Station hosts annual Christmas Carolaire Christmas really got under this year when The Lizard Lifeboat Station hosted their annual Christmas Carolaire on the evening of Friday 5th December. Visitors were welcomed to the station and treated to an evening of festive carol singing accompanied by Helston Town Band and the children from Landewednack School Choir. A Christmas raffle and seasonal refreshments including mulled wine and mince pies were served throughout the evening by members of the fund raising team. Now in its third year the event was hailed as another success with many visitors saying that it is an evening that really starts the Christmas festivities in The Lizard village and local community. Grateful thanks and appreciation go to the Rev Deirdre Mackrill and the Rev Steve Swann who compared the evening aboard RNLB â&#x20AC;&#x153;Roseâ&#x20AC;?, Helston

town Band, Travis Perkins Helston who kindly donated a generator and outside lighting, the children from Landewednack School Choir, James and Donna Glosby from The Top House Inn, Westcountry Fruit Ltd, Zoar Garage and everyone who donated refreshments and raffle prizes.

Helston store wins regional award for outstanding customer service The Spar in Helston has been named the South West region’s best CollectPlus store in the brand’s quarterly awards programme, which recognises excellent customer satisfaction and service levels over the period July to September 2014. We are approaching the end of the year, and as always Christmas gets earlier and earlier. Shops have their Christmas decorations up, Helston has its Christmas lights on and as always there is the John Lewis TV advert. This year John Lewis has Monty The Penguin. What did Monty get for Christmas? Well, a lover. I am not sure it is appropriate to buy someone a lover. Am I being a bit of a prude? But surely this is sex trafficking or at the very least prostitution. Surely Mr Lewis must be aware that sex slavery is illegal! And what about last year? “The Bear And The Hare”. The hare bought the bear an alarm clock because he was always oversleeping. Who has an alarm clock these days? Most people these days use their mobile phone. I know I do. Keep up with the times John! And in 2012 there was the snowman, and yet again Mr Lewis could not help himself. What did the snowman get for Christmas? A lover again! It seems that Mr Lewis has a one-track mind. Why am I talking about the John Lewis adverts? It is important if you own a business to understand that you are a marketing executive. Do not think of marketing as something you do when you find the time at the end of the day or when you have a few pounds to spare. It must be core to your business. It is what you do! The challenge is to get a return on investment for each pound spent. It is easy to waste your money like Mr Lewis. Now, let’s have a think about what would be a more effective marketing campaign for the average, small to medium sized business. There are a few basic rules to remember that will make a huge difference in your marketing investment. There rules are the same whether you are advertising in the Helston Advertiser, on your website or on TV. The message is to market your business but do it effectively and strategically. The first mistake that Mr Lewis has made is there was no “Call To Action”. You need to ask the reader to do something. Now, marketing is not about

making a sale. It is about beginning a conversation with your audience. You want them to contact you, talk to you, visit your shop, go to your website, anything. And that is what I have done with my latest marketing campaign: the Bumble Bee Payroll Bureau. The “Call To Action” is to “contact me today for a free, no obligation consultation”. I want to begin a conversation. So far so good! John has nothing. Next, tell the reader how you can help them, what can you do for them? What problem can you solve for them? With me, I can make your life easier by doing your payroll for you, and it does not cost a lot – from £20 a month your payroll headaches will disappear. What problem is Mr Lewis solving? I don’t know. And lastly, be different! Stand out. Well, Mr Lewis does clearly achieve this objective. But using salacious, inappropriate, X-rated content to stand out is not really my style as a chartered accountant. I have used the personal touch, with me smiling away, looking friendly and approachable. I am differentiating myself from the boring, traditional accountancy firms. Remember the Bernard Matthews TV adverts? Mr Matthews knew how to make a classy, effective advert. Weren’t his adverts “bootiful”? I can only dream of emulating the genius that was Mr Matthews. Now, you must think seriously about your marketing. What are you doing? Do you have a “Call To Action”? Do you tell the reader how you can solve a problem for them? Are you different? Forget penguins, bears, hares and snowman! Leave that to the one-track minded Mr Lewis. Talk to the Helston Advertiser! Think about your marketing strategy! We are all marketing experts now. Awesome Jazz coming to The Godolphin Club A very special evening of sensational jazz has been jointly organised by Cornwall’s very own Jazz legend, by Mr Johnny Austin and huge jazz fan, Mr Alf Merritt. Following last Christmas’ sell out performance they are delighted to once again bring to Helston two world class multi-instrumentalists for an awesome evening of Jazz. Amy Roberts and Richard Exall, who are both frontline members of The Big Chris Barber Band, will appear with The David Ferris Trio for a pre Christmas evening of breath taking Jazz at Helston’s Godolphin Club on Monday December 22nd. Amy and Richard have recently returned to the UK from an exhausting nine week European Tour which has taken them to Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Lichtenstein. They have played to packed audiences in some of Europe’s most amazing venues including The Essen Philharmonie and The Bremen Glocke. “We visited some beautiful places and played in some amazing venues. The tour was incredibly tiring but I am pleased to be back in the UK in my own bed. Nine weeks is a very long time living out of a suit case in a seemingly endless succession of hotels. Really looking forward to returning home to Cornwall for this concert and to spending Christmas at home”.

Amy, a former member of the Helston School Jazz Orchestra, is delighted to be invited back to Helston and hopes that the present HSJO students will both enjoy the evening and also raise some much needed funds. This event showcases five of the UK’s top young Jazz musicians all but one of whom has deep Cornish roots. Four of these musicians first met, and were inspired by Mr Austin, as members of The Helston School Jazz Orchestra! (HSJO). Mr Austin reflected ‘It is wonderful to see former HSJO students being so successful as professional musicians in the very tough world of music. We are really pleased to welcome them back to Cornwall and look forward to a very special concert which will also have some surprise guests!’ After leaving Helston 6th Form Amy, from Penzance, has twice won the ‘Rising Star’ section of The British Jazz Awards. She is classically trained and graduated with a First Class Hon Degree from The Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, and currently tours with Europe’s foremost Jazz band, The Big Chris Barber Band. Amy is joined in the front line by the hugely talented musician, Richard Exall, who just happens to be Chris Barber’s lead saxophonist and for tonight will be an honorary Cornishman. For this concert Amy and Richard will be accompanied by The David Ferris Trio to play a selection of favourites from a wide range of Jazz styles with impressive arrangements interspersed with exciting individual solos. The Trio is hugely talented, all former members of HSJO and a credit to the Music Department at Helston School. It is led by the gifted David Ferris on piano, his accomplished brother Richard on Bass and the brilliant Robbie Brokenshire on drums. David is currently studying Jazz at The Birmingham Conservatoire and Richard is studying at Bath University. It promises to be a tremendous, not to be missed, Jazz occasion and also an opportunity for HSJO students to both enjoy the music and also to raise some funds for the Orchestra. WeeklyRecipe Slow cooker chicken casserole INGREDIENTS 4 carrots 1 large onion 4 garlic cloves 2 large potatoes, diced 1 handful chopped fresh parsley, rosemary and thyme 4 chicken thighs 4 bay leaves salt and pepper to taste 40g pearl barley 20g split peas 20g marrow fat peas 600ml (1 pt) chicken stock

I work with some very successful people helping them to be even more successful and to achieve the goals they never realised were possible. On the outside they are successful but they come to me because they know they are not fulfilling their full potential. They are holding themselves back, in the same way that we can all get in our own way and prevent ourselves from doing the things we would love to do. What would you like to achieve in 2015 to fill your true potential? A New Year is also a reminder that time marches on. Another year gone, they seem to go quicker each year! 18 months ago I lost my father quite suddenly and that was a huge reminder for me that life is too short not to be happy. Too short not to go for our dreams, too short not to let go of our fears and step up to the plate and create the life we want.

- What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail? - What do I want? - What else? - How do I want to live the rest of my life? - What do I want to create in my life? - What shall be my ultimate legacy? What is the first small step you could do towards that? Fear is what tends to hold us back. Fear of failing. Fear of success. Whatever it is, fear is always a prediction of a future which looks scary so we stay where we are. The funny thing is, it is us who has made that prediction up. Nothing can predict the future, not even our own thinking! What would you do if you could act decisively with or without fear? Snowing me, snowing you The Institute of Advanced Motorists’ chief examiner, Peter Rodger is offering weekly motoring tips to riders and drivers. This week he is advising drivers about travelling in snow. While there is no snow forecast at the moment for most of Britain, the unpredictability of our weather means it could come at any time. • If you have to travel in bad weather plan your journey thoroughly. Think about where you are going and what it will be like all the way along the journey. If you can, avoid travelling on less-used roads or coun-

try lanes as these are less likely to be gritted. • Before setting off, clear all your windows and mirrors fully. Clear off snow piled on the roof of your car and the bonnet too, as it can fall and blow on to the windscreen. Don’t leave anything obscured. • Start your car gently from stationary and avoid high revs. If road conditions are extremely icy and you drive a manual car you should move off in a higher gear rather than first gear. You should stay in a higher gear to avoid wheel spin. • It’s important you get your

Never drive too fast that you risk losing control, and don’t drive so slowly that you risk losing momentum for getting up a slope. • At the very least double your stopping distance from the vehicle in front of you – ideally lengthen it much more than this. This will give you more time to slow down without relying on your brakes. • Make sure you slow down sufficiently before reaching a bend so you have enough time to react to any hazards that appear as you go round it – and

so you do not skid as well. You should have finished slowing down before you start to turn the steering wheel. • If you break down or have to pull over on a motorway or dual carriageway, you should leave your vehicle and stand to the safe side of it, but not in front of it, when waiting for help.
