Letter from Helston Flora Day Association Flora Day is fast approaching with the usual tremendous enthusiasm and support for Helston’s Ancient Festival. Although it will take place on a Friday this year, we still anticipate a large crowd to visit Helston and enjoy the unique event. We are pleased that Cornwall Council have promised to attend to the road surfaces in the town, but the Stewards of the Dance would still remind the participants in the Dances and the viewing public to be aware that there may still be some uneven surfaces under foot. This year the Stewards have decided to trial a variation for the Childrens Dance at Lismore. Following a proposal from the Stewards, Mr. M. Jay has agreed that the dancers may enter the property by the small gate in Cross Street and then proceed immediately around to the driveway

of the house, to exit onto Cross Street again without going into the Gardens. As a consequence of this alteration the second band will remain in the procession in Church Street and will not stop on the bend for the dancers to pass. The second band will however remain outside the Monument and follow the dancers up Coinagehall Street. Access to the Lismore gardens will be restricted to spectators for the Midday Dance. Entry into Properties and Gardens on the route of the Dances is a great privilege to us and we would remind the public that it is by courtesy of the owners who retain the right to close their gates/doors if they so wish. We ask you to respect their properties. As ever, the Stewards are delighted that the Helston Town Band Continued on Page 4

We thank them for encouraging so many young musicians to join with the older members, so that in years to come we will still have a full complement of players. We would ask the public to support the band by giving generously to the collectors who will be following the dances. The cost of buying instruments and supporting our Band is ever increasing. The route of the Midday dance will be as last year, commencing at the Guildhall and proceeding on the road into Meneage Street. The Midday Dance will enter Lismore Gardens as usual. The Council have requested that property owners take down any greenery from their buildings before 8.30 a.m. on May 9th so that the collection teams can remove it from the streets. Any greenery left out after that time may not be collected. We would point out that there are road closures and parking restrictions in force on Flora Day. These take effect from early in the morning and we request that cars are not parked in the streets overnight on the 7th May as they may cause an obstruction early in the morning of Flora Day. We welcome you to Helston to enjoy our unique and ever popular spring festival on Friday May 8th.

Litle Lizards learn about beach safety from RNLI Lifeguards Youngsters from the Little Lizards Childrens Center which adjoins Landewednack School at The Lizard enjoyed a visit from the RNLI Beach Lifeguards on Monday 20th April. Mike and Alex, who both work for the RNLI on our local beaches, showed the children some of the equipment and resources they would use in the water when rescuing someone in trouble. The children listened attentively and were eager to tell Mike and Alex how they themselves stay safe at the beach. The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit and they all want to be lifeguards when they grow up!

On a windy Wednesday 22nd April, pupils from Garras, Cury, Sithney, Mullion and Landewednack primary schools arrived at Mullion School for a Key stage 2 Mini Red Tennis competition. The competition was a round robin with a Davis cup style format with each school having 4 players on their team and the matches consisted of three 'rubbers' two singles and a doubles. This meant the final result of each match would be either 3-0 or 2-1 either way. There were some fantastic matches in both the Year 3/4 competition and the Year 5/6 competition. The final results for the Year 5/6 competition came down to the head to head result where Landewednack narrowly beat Garras to the title with Cury in 3rd place. The winners of the Year 3/4 competition would go on to represent the Mullion Cluster at

the Peninsula Partnership round of the School Games. Once again this was a close competition where it came down to a difference of rubbers won and rubbers lost with Garras pipping Mullion to retain the title they won last year and Cury again in 3rd place. Cluster PE Assistant Jake Lane oversaw the competition "Full credit to every child that took part in tricky conditions today, there was still a good level of tennis on display today and hopefully the children all enjoyed themselves despite the wind. Thank you to Mullion School for hosting us and to the Primary staff for sticking it out so the children could be a part of the day." The next cluster competition is TAGfest tag rugby for Key Stages 1 and 2 on Friday 1st May. Fingers crossed for a sunny day!

Reach Your Full Potential The Ultimate Illusion I want you to read this whilst listening for a feeling within. Not to find out something you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know or re-inforce what you think you know. Read for a feeling, an experience not for intellectual understanding. It is that feeling within, an insight, a change in heart, can teach you something far more valuable than intellectual thought. There was once a drunk man scrambling under a lamppost in the middle of the night. A policeman comes along and and asks what he is doing. The drunk man looks up at the policeman and tells him he has lost his keys. The policeman says he will help him look and asks him where he dropped them. The drunk man points to the other side of the road and says â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;over thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Confused, the policeman asks â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;So why are you looking here?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The man replies â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Because the light is better here!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Our thinking does the same thing. It looks for emotional well-being, peace of mind and happiness in the wrong place. Our thinking genuinely believes that our emotional well-being is dependent on things outside of us. For example â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m OK ifâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m OK whenâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. We then work really, really hard to make those things happen. This is looking outside of ourselves for emotional well-being. The truth is itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s within us already. We were born with it. All the greatest spiritual teachings over the millennia say the same thing, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;look withinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. We often donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do this because we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like what we see, but that is who we think we are, not who we really are. We can easily see when friends are caught in their thinking about themselves which is not true, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see when we do the same thing. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too convincing to trust that it canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be real.

We are born a diamond, perfect and unique. Then things happen in life. We start to think our well-being is dependant on what parents or teachers or friends think of us. We start to think our well-being is dependant on our behaviour or what we do. It is like horse manure gets thrown at the diamond. And sometimes it sticks. And before we know it, all we see is a pile of horse manure. And we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like what we see. We are worried what people might think of us. We work really hard to polish the pile of horse manure, to give it a shine, giving an impression that we are OK. It is like putting a layer of nail polish around the pile of horse manure. Some people experience this as a mask to project an image of being OK but within we think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the horse manure. However, all along we have forgotten we are actually that diamond. We think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the horse manure. However, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not who we are. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your thinking believing your sense of OKness is dependant on what people think of you, or demonstrating your value/OKness in some way. When we begin to see this illusion, that we are looking at life through our thinking, looking in the wrong place for emotional wellbeing, we can stop chasing our thinking and begin to connect with our true self, the diamond, the beautiful, complete person that came in to this world as a baby. When was the last time you saw a baby and thought they were not complete? Not OK? You just think you are not OK, or only OK ifâ&#x20AC;Ś Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the illusion of thought. It disconnects you from your true self. The true self you get glimpses of when you have a quieter mind. The true self that has insight, inspiration and connection to people and nature around you. Connected to life.

Young musicians wow the crowds The Cornwall Music Education Hubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Youth Orchestra, led by Tim Boulton and assisted by young assistant conductor Angus Webster, performed a spectacular sold-out concert at Truro Cathedral as part of their Spring concert series. The Cornwall Youth Orchestra, made up of 70 young people, performed an exciting programme of music inspired by the BBCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ten Pieces initiative, which encourages primary school children to learn about classical music. The programme included a newly commissioned work by young Cornish composer, Ben Comeau, as well as an epic piece, Prince Zal and the Simorgh, inspired by Persian folklore which was performed

by the Orchestra alongside two Iranian musicians, a fifty-strong junior violin group from schools across Cornwall and narrator, John Brolly. Truro Cathedralâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cornwall Youth Choir, led by Christopher Gray, accompanied the Orchestra for a rousing rendition of Handelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zadok the Priest. The concert also saw the first performance by the recently established, Cornwall Family Orchestra and Chorus, led by local composer and conductor, Patrick Bailey. This intergenerational project was set up by the BBC with support by some of it Concert Orchestra players. The group includes players of all ages and abilities who composed their own piece to perform on Saturday. This concert was the second sold out concert this week for the Cornwall Youth

Orchestra, following their performance at Launceston Town Hall on Sunday 12 April. This has also been a busy month for other Cornwall Music Education Hub ensembles: Friday 10 April saw another captivating performance by the Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra, led by Janet Elston, at Carnglaze Caverns following their Easter residential. The Cornwall Girls and Boys Choirs, led by Angela Renshaw, performed six mini-concerts around Cornwall, culminating in a joint performance by the two choirs on Lemon Quay. The choirs were joined in the various locations by local community choirs, co-ordinated by the Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival. INGREDIENTS 100g unsalted butter, softened 100g caster sugar 1 egg 225g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 5 tablespoons honey 4 tablespoons natural yoghurt 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract Icing 125g icing sugar 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest

METHOD 1. In a small mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg. Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Combine honey, yoghurt, lemon zest and lemon extract. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with

honey mixture. 2. Drop by tablespoonfuls 5cm apart onto greased baking trays. Bake at 180 C / Gas 4 for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to wire racks. In a small bowl, combine the icing sugar and lemon juice until smooth. Brush over the warm cookies; sprinkle with lemon zest.

Ladies rugby continues to grow in Helston Following a successful 2014/1015 season, Helston Hellcats are looking forward to the 2015/2016 season. They are happy to be welcoming a new under 13s coach who will be joining the squad. Last week a new kit for the under 15s was presented by Ian England one of the Colt’s coaches. Jos Bond the under 15s coach said “It really means a lot to the girls to have their own kit to play in and to be able to represent their club. We have had a fantastic season with quite an influx of new players who have all made an immediate impact at club and county level and

would like to thank the Colt’s for this gift” Our girls section is always growing and we now have players from 12 to 17 years old in our under 13, 15 & 18s

Try your hand at golf with free lessons at Mullion Golf Club Get into Golf! Mullion is offering free golf lessons for anyone wishing to try the game. As part of May's Get into Golf Month Mullion Golf Club are organising a day of free adult golf taster sessions on Sunday 10th |May from 11.00am. Wendy Keys won the Ladies’ Monthly Medal on Saturday with 102 -33 =69. Judy Thomas was second with 97 -26 =71, Linda Dunford third with 88 -16 =72 (L9) and Ann Seabrook fourth with 98 -26 =72. The fourth round of the Pilcher Cup (Stableford - 9 Holes) was won by Roy Hillyar with 22 points, with Rodger Pearce second (21 points) and Simon Phillips third with 18 points on countback from Ray Crebo. The overall winner of the Pilcher Cup is Ryan Semmens, with Mike Brownfield second, and Rodger Pearce third. Next Saturday the Ladies play for their Anniversary Trophy and on Sunday the Men play for their Anniversary Trophy. On Wednesday the Ladies play Round 2 (9 holes Stableford) of the Star Cup in the morning, and the Ogres play in the afternoon. On Thursday (7th) the Ogres have a home match versus Radnor.
