Innovative charity shortlisted for top award

An innovative charity that helps injured veterans by teaching them to sail has been shortlisted for this year’s Cornwall Business Awards. Shaun Pascoe, a former commanding officer leading medical evacuations in Iraq and Afghanistan, set up Turn to Starboard at Falmouth in Cornwall three years ago. Now the organisation has taken a massive step forward after been shortlisted for the ‘Best Third Sector Business’ - one of 14 categories up for grabs this year. More than 300 business leaders are expected to attend the glittering awards ceremony at St

Mellion International on May 12, an event organised by the Cornwall Development Company. Shaun Pascoe said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for these privileged awards. As a not-for-profit charity helping injured veterans from all over the UK, it feels great for our team to be recognised for all their hard work and efforts.” Turn to Starboard is run by a group of serving and retired Armed Forces personnel, civilian staff and volunteers who believe that sailing has a therapeutic and calming effect on participants. They help military personnel affected by operations to gain sailing qualifications to help start

new careers anywhere in the world. In June, the charity will sail a crew of injured veterans around the British Isles. The Turn to Starboard Round Britain Challenge 2016 will see a crew of up to 30 veterans – many with little or no sailing experience – sail aboard a 92-foot replica Tall Ship. The 2000-mile voyage is expected to take 8 weeks and is planned as a way to help participants gain new skills while highlighting the challenges some veterans face. Fashion show for Fisherman’s charity

The Helston Women’s Institute is hosting a charity fashion show this week. New and nearly-new fashionable clothes and accessories will be modelled and offered for sale at the show, which is raising money for The Fisherman’s Mission. Organisers say the event will be an opportunity to update wardrobes for summer while supporting a local charity. The event will be held at St Mary’s Church Hall at Clodgey Lane in Helston on Thursday from 7pm. Council condemns Government decision to cut Cornish language funding

Cornwall Council has condemned the government’s decision to cut all its funding for the Cornish language with immediate effect. The government has provided up to £150,000 a year to support Cornish language since it was recognised under the Charter for Regional and Minority Languages in 2003. The grant has been used to

support the development of the language, such as funding a range of educational activities. The council has received a formal letter from the Department of Communities and Local Government stating that it was not providing any further funding support. Council Cabinet Member for Economy and Culture, Julian Ger-

man, said: “The Cornish language is a great source of pride for Cornwall and is part of what makes Cornwall and the Cornish unique. The Government’s decision not to support Cornish with any funding whatsoever goes against the international agreements they have signed up to, and that makes no sense at all. Cornwall has received funding from Government for a

Godolphin Bluebell Festival Open garden at Bosvathick Lovers of Cornwall’s flora can enjoy an abundance of native bluebells at Godolphin Woods near Helston. Visitors are invited to celebrate the Bluebell Festival at Godolphin House with a range of walks, talks and a family trail.

The free event offers the chance to listen to the estates gardener talk about the bluebells plus the chance to take part in craft activities. The Bluebell Festival takes place daily from 10am to 5pm until May 15. For more information call the Godolphin Estate on 01736 763194.

An estate on the Lizard Peninsula will open its gardens to the public next month as part of a national scheme. Bonython Manor near Cury will open its gardens for one day in conjunction with the National Gardens Open for Charity scheme. The magnificent 20-acre garden includes a sweeping hydrangea drive to the Georgian manor. The estate offers a herbaceous walled garden, potager with veg-

Only the family serve a life sentence I HOPE that I can live many lives, as the legal interpretation of just one doesn’t seem long enough. Two men from Camborne have been found guilty of the savage murder of solider Dave Curnow on a night out in Redruth last year. They were handed life sentences yet were told they will be set free in 16 and 13.5 years respectively. One of the killers, Liam Laing, will be released before his 35th birthday. Both of these convicted murderers will be afforded the luxury of a long life in the free world. That same luxury was robbed from their victim, who had the misfortune to cross their path and was just 20 years old. The pair carried out a feral, brutal and sustained attack lasting several minutes on Mr Curnow, who had recently

returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. He is believed to be the youngest British soldier to serve in the region. CCTV captured the whole attack and showed how they beat the defenceless man to the ground, punched and kicked him and stamped on his head before dragging him into the street. The pair were then filmed re-enacting the attack as they appeared to brag to a friend, shake hands and embrace while admiring their handiwork. Why is a life sentence called ‘life’ when in reality it’s just a few short years? If the sentence is 16 years, why not make it 16 years? Why dress it up to appear longer than it really is? Short sentences cheapen the life of victims and don’t offer a strong enough deterrent. How can these murderers commit

the worse crime imaginable by taking another life and pay such a paltry price? On a personal level, I’m close to the family of someone who was murdered in an unprovoked attack almost 20 years ago. I have witnessed first-hand the

Good comes from tragedy ON Sunday, Pirate FM hosted the Cornwall’s Local Heroes Awards 2016, several of which went to Helstonians, with one presented to a special lady. Kathryn Hines (my ex-wife) was rewarded for her work in raising funds for the first 24-hour access defibrillators to be installed in the town. She set up the charity, the Andrew Oliver Big Heart Fund, following the death of her partner in 2014 from a sudden heart attack. The charity has now placed seven defibrillators around the area, with the latest installed at the Tesco store in Helston. Although nothing can properly compensate up for the loss her family continue to feel, as her former husband and good friend to ‘Ollie’, I am proud of how she has managed to find a positive out of the tragedy. It will be fitting that other peoples lives will be saved by these machines, and know he would be proud of her, and our daughters too.

Majority of new pupils get first choice Parents of reception age children across Cornwall have been sent details of which school their child is due to attend in September, with the majority of children being allocated a place in their first preference school. Cornwall Council received 5839 applications for new reception school places for pupils in Cornwall to start school in September 2016. Of those, 5399 (92.5%) have been offered a place at their

first preference school. Of the 440 pupils who were not allocated their first preference school, 220 pupils have been allocated their second preference school and 46 pupils their third preference school. These figures show that 97% of children have been allocated one of their three preferences. Andrew Wallis, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Young People said: “I am delighted that 92 per cent

Iconic jeweller going for gold with store expansion

A RENOWNED family jeweller has returned to its golden era by expanding its operation in Helston. Wearnes Jewellers has traded in the town for 100 years and had previously occupied two adjoining shops in Meneage Street. In 1990 a downturn in trade forced the closure of one of the stores and the corridor linking the premises was closed off. But now the owners have re-acquired the former store and rejoined them both, while completing a major refurbishment. The long-standing business is run by Sarah Corbridge – the great granddaughter of its founder William Wearne – and her husband Adam. Mr Corbridge said: “We are delighted to be able to reopen the former shop which had traded for more than 70 years. “We’ve reinvested in the premises not only to give back something to our cus-

tomers who have supported us over the years, but ‘up the ante’ in the town and show it’s a shopping destination worth visiting.” William Wearne founded the business in 1890 and opened his first shop in Camborne around 1894. The Helston shop was opened in 1914 offering bespoke jewellery and watches. In 2012 the couple relocated the Camborne store to Falmouth, which now offers an

on-site goldsmith, silversmith and watchmaker in a specially created workshop. The independent jewellers are renowned for offering bespoke jewellery commissions and remodelling family heirlooms to generations of families in the area. Mrs Corbridge added: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to all customers past and present and look forward to seeing you in our new store soon.”

Lizard children celebrate decade of nursery CHILDREN of the Little Lizards Children’s Centre have been celebrating passing an important anniversary this week. The Centre which is attached to Landewednack School at The Lizard have celebrated ten years since the nursery opened. The children and staff marked the occasion with family and friends and past pupils joined in with the celebrations during the afternoon. Photographs taken over the last 10 years were on display and a special cake was presented to the Little Lizards which had been made by Sarah Rudd. Landewednack School Headteacher Louise Jones said: “We are so lucky to have such a thriving nursery and children’s centre attached to our school with excellent staff and facilities. We work very

Half a million motorists don’t know they’re ready to drive electric Today’s electric car market could be transformed overnight if the half a million UK motorists already suited to electric motoring switched to plug-in power, according to research from Go Ultra Low. The joint Government and automotive industry campaign profiled the mind-set of more than 2,000 UK motorists to see how their new car requirements have changed over time. The research compared new vehicle buyer’s purchase considerations and their driving habits to those of existing electric car drivers to identify motorists who were better-suited to an electric car.

Of those surveyed, almost half drive no more than 15 miles a day, while 98% said they travel less than 100 miles daily – within the range of pure electric vehicles (EVs) and easily achievable in a plug-in hybrid. The survey also revealed that buyers increasingly seek low running costs and are twice as likely to rate fuel efficiency as their main concern when purchasing a car, compared to when they bought their first car. Also, around 80% of car buyers use finance options to purchase their car with a preference for monthly payments. Despite this, just 12% of new car buyers consider total monthly running costs,

including fuel, tax, insurance, and servicing when choosing their new car. Elburton are now stranded eight points adrift and it will take a miracle to save them from the drop. It was a strong all round performance by Helston with the opening goal coming from Phil Cattran who also got the third goal, with Mark Goldsworthy popping up yet again to score the other. The hosts showed their frustration when they had a player sent off and with just four games remaining, look set to leave the league.

DVISION ONE WEST Porthleven 1 Liskeard 2 Porthleven will rue a lost opportunity to open up some space from the bottom of the table. They had been leading through player coach Charlie Young who netted midway through the first half and they had chances to extend the lead. However it was the visitors who got the rub of the green and got two quick goals before the break. An even second half saw neither side add to the score but Porthleven had a strong late penalty appeal turned down.
