Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service issues bogus callers warning Following a call from a concerned resident in the Carbis Bay area, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service are warning people to be on their guard. The warning follows a report that two men, who were in a brown van with a fire service sign placed in the front window and who claimed they were from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, arrived unannounced and asked a householder if the property was fitted with smoke alarms and fire doors. They showed a form of ID but did not

enter the premises. The resident was suspicious and contacted CFRS who had no record of any home fire safety checks scheduled for that area at that time. Prevention Manager Nick Harvey from CFRS said: “If it is a genuine home fire safety check it will usually be by appointment and our firefighters will be wearing a uniform and carrying an identification card. Please ask to see the identification card, and if you require confirmation telephone the freephone helpline 0800 3581 999.”

WeeklyRecipe Smoked Haddock & Potato Pie INGREDIENTS 750ml (1¼ pints) plus 3 tbsp semi-skimmed milk 500g (1 lb 2 oz) smoked haddock fillets 1 bay leaf 1 large leek, halved lengthways and sliced 550g (1¼ lb) potatoes, peeled and cut into 0.5cm (¼ in) thick slices 3 tbsp cornflour 85g (3 oz) watercress, thick stalks removed 50g (1 3/4 oz) mature Cheddar cheese, coarsely grated salt and pepper chopped parsley to garnish

METHOD 1. Pour the 750 ml (1¼ pints) milk into a wide frying pan. Add the haddock and bay leaf. Bring to a gentle simmer, then cover and cook for about 5 minutes or until the haddock is just cooked. 2. Lift out the fish with a draining spoon and leave to cool slightly, then peel off the skin and break the flesh into large flakes. Set aside. Strain the milk and reserve 600 ml (1 pint), as well as the bay leaf. 3. Put the leek in the frying pan and add the reserved milk and bay leaf. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until the leek is tender. 4. Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water for about 8 minutes or until they

Mix the cornflour with the remaining 3 tbsp cold milk to make a smooth paste. Add to the leek mixture and cook gently, stirring, until slightly thickened. 6. Take the pan from the heat and stir in the watercress, which will wilt. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the flaked haddock, folding it in gently. Transfer the mixture to a 2 litre (3½ pint) pie dish.

7. Arrange the potato slices on top of the fish mixture, overlapping them slightly. Sprinkle with the cheese, and season to taste. Bake for 25—30 minutes or until the fish filling is bubbling and the potatoes are turning golden. 8. Sprinkle the top of the pie with parsley and allow to stand for about 5 minutes before serving.

Early Easter Fayre raises £300 for local school Landewednack School was the venue for an early Easter Fayre on Thursday 27th March organised by members of the School Association. The school hall was filled with seasonal stalls raffles and refreshments. Children were able to decorate their own Easter ginger biscuit which had been baked and donated by the chefs at

the Top House inn. Youngsters from the school and the adjoining Little Lizards Childrens Centre took part in a competition prior to the Fayre, they had to design an Easter bookmark. All of the entries were on display in the hall throughout the afternoon and had been judged by Lynne Chandler who is a governor at the school. Thanks go to everyone who

had donated cakes, refreshments and raffle prizes, to The Top House Inn for the delicious ginger biscuits and to all who had volunteered their time to help during the afternoon. The event was hailed as a great success raising over £300 which will be put towards the extra curricular activities that the children take part in throughout the school year.

Cornish Language Partnership holds successful conference as Government funding for Cornish language is announced The MAGA 2014 conference which took place at Lys Kernow (County Hall) heard from speakers including Brian O hEadhra from Bord na Gaidhligh and Creative Scotland who inspired the audience with an account of how Scottish Gaelic is promoted through music and culture and of the work underway to secure its status. Opening the conference, Julian German who is the chair of the Cornish Language Partnership said: “We continue to make progress to increase the use and profile of Kernewek which has much to do with the tenacity, perseverance and continuing passion and commitment of the people in this room. We have been working hard on behalf of our language to convince the government of the inherent social, cultural and economic value of Kernewek to the people of Cornwall.” Responding to the news that the government has awarded £120,000 support for the partnership for the next financial year, he added: “This announcement will allow continued support for the Cornish language. Although it can be said that the gov-

ernment has responded positively in the current difficult economic climate, we are disappointed that the settlement is for one year only. We hope that together with the government we will be able to work towards an effective longer term plan in due course. We will soon be meeting with Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Stephen Williams when we will be pushing hard not only on funding issues but also in non-financial areas. We will strive to obtain Cornish language guidance across government departments and statutory bodies so that they implement their responsibilities under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and we will seek agreement from government to work constructively with us to achieve notification under part III of the Charter rather than the current Part II.” The Council hosts MAGA, the Cornish Language Partnership, which is responsible for promoting the language and works across education, community and the public and private sectors.

Royal Recognition for Commanding Officer Commander Chris Godwin has been awarded the Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Commendation for Valuable Service. Commander Godwin was awarded the Commendation for his role as the Commanding Officer of 820 Naval Air Squadron. The Merlin Squadron, based at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, was on Operations in the Middle East between December 2011 and April 2013, at immediate readiness to provide protection for Royal Navy shipping during maritime operations East of Suez. Part of the Citation for the Award read: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Commander Godwin not only delivered operational commitment with his Merlin Mk 1 Anti-submarine helicopters, but significantly increased their flying rate and availability. Having identified best practice to optimise the Squadronâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personnel changeover profile, he skillfully balanced the concurrent operational demands in theatre, with flying currency for the remainder of the Merlin Force back at Royal Naval Air Station

Culdrose. 820 Naval Air Squadron output under pinned the achievements of the Merlin Force for 2012 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2013 and achieving its flying hour targets; a profile which is critically linked to the cost-effective running of the Maritime Merlin Fleet.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Merlin Forceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s transition from the Mark 1 to Mark 2 has demanded much of its Commanding Officers who have been charged with sustaining output against a diminishing Forward Fleet and resource challenges - particularly aircraft spares - alongside the demands of operations East of Suez. Under Commander Godwinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership, 820 Naval Air Squadron has delivered unprecedented levels of aircraft availability, operational output, strategic relevance and success: his Squadron admire, respect and work extremely hard for him - he is thoroughly deserving of national recognition.â&#x20AC;? Commander Godwin and his family live in Cornwall, but are currently based overseas because Chris has recently started a position within NATO.

Chris said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m delighted and incredibly humbled to have been awarded this Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Commendation for Valuable Service. I do consider it an award which falls to the efforts of 820 Naval Air Squadron first and foremost, and if I could divide it by the 147 of them, then I would. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m lucky enough that I was at the top of the tree during a very busy, but ultimately hugely rewarding, period. Being the Commanding Officer at 820 Naval Air Squadron was one of the highlights of my career and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s down to the men and women I had the honour to work with.â&#x20AC;? Commander Godwin was raised and educated in Newcastle upon Tyne, but has spent a good deal of his Royal Navy career at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose. He trained at Culdrose on 705, 706 and 810 Squadrons, going on to serve on 814 and 849 frontline Squadrons at sea, and from 2006 to 2008 he was the Commanding Officer of 771 Search and Rescue Squadron.

The 51 Jazz Club of Cornwall offers Traditional and New Orleans style jazz every Sunday from 1pm to 3.30pm at the Smugglers Inn St Erth Praze (on the Helston side of Hayle). The pattern is usually a well-known British touring jazz band once a fortnight and good local band on the Sundays in-between. The touring bands invited to play at the club are mostly chosen from those bands regularly featured at all the usual Jazz festivals around the country. The “Smugglers” has hosted jazz for over forty years and is a well-known and popular venue for bands touring the West Country perhaps also playing at Bude and Plymouth Jazz Clubs on their way to or from the far South West. These bands will often have hailed from London, Manchester, and Birmingham sometimes even from Europe, particularly Denmark and Sweden. The timing at the Smugglers has been a success over the years allowing people the opportunity of a good Sunday roast lunch whilst at the same time enjoying the jazz atmosphere. Spring into spring, get down with the daffodils and join the Wild Lizard Project for an Easter Extravaganza What’s happening on the Lizard this Easter? Exciting events for all the family and plenty of opportunities to go outdoors and discover just how special the Lizard really is. Mullion School ‘Easter Hootenanny’ Once again Mullion School hall was ‘rocking’ at its annual ‘Hootenanny’. This is an evening of music created by students from the Band Factory project which is a rolling programme of coaching for Mullion’s talented rock and pop musicians. Ten young bands, each on their own stage, performed to a packed hall. The compere for the evening was Joe Welch, a Year 10 pupil whose witty commentary kept the audience informed and entertained throughout. The evening began with a Year 11 band called ‘25degrees C’ who performed ‘Brian’ by The Arctic Monkeys. This was followed by the first Year 9 band who enthused the crowd with Gloria Jones’ ‘Tainted Love’. ‘The Wild Turkeys’ gave a very polished performance of ‘Confusion’ by The Zutons. Madi Martin then had the audience spellbound with the lyrical ‘Anchor’ by Mindy Gledhill which was

tastefully accompanied by Rory Gow on Tuba and Rosie Tregoning on the piano. One of the real toe tappers of the evening was the performance of Chuck Berry’s ‘Route 66’ by the Year 10 band ‘The Brittleshins’ ably led by lead singer, Connor Major, who engaged the crowd with his witty banter as well as some impressive singing and harmonica playing. The school’s percussion ensemble then transported the audience to the realms of Latin America with Tito Puente’s ‘Oye Como Va’ and the lovely Year 11 duet of Tegen Pascoe and Kim Bastian, who sang ‘Radioactive’ by Imagine Dragons whilst playing the guitar. The school’s all girl band ‘East of Eden’ moved on to ‘Holiday’ by Green Day with lead singer, Charlotte Bottrell, a Year 7 pupil making her vocal debut. The Year 10 band ‘Mr Ben’ concluded the first half with a very mature and polished performance of

‘Beautiful Losers’ by Ocean Colour Scene. The school’s national award winning ensemble ‘The Zappa Project’ then shared their winning performance from the National Festival of Youth Music and received a presentation from the headteacher, Mr Sandford. The second half saw all the bands return to the stages where the music of ‘White Stripes’, Cousin Harley, John Lee Hooker, All About Eve, The Strokes, The Las’s and Franz Ferdinand was ably performed. The event received huge praise from parents, one of

whom wrote ‘what struck me was the confidence of the performers. When kids are standing up there prepared to own the stage as they all did, you can be sure they are in a place - literally and metaphorically where they feel happy and valued and safe. Thank you for providing that place.’ Georgina Davies, the school’s music teacher thanked Mark Burgoyne who had led the band factory project throughout the year and produced ‘real musical class’ from the students.

Goodwood launches most important new historic motor sport event for 15 years Goodwood Road Racing Club’s hotlyanticipated 72nd Members’ Meeting caused a sensation as its inaugural running took place in front of a highly-enthusiastic crowd on March 2930. The most important new historic motor sport event in over 15 years featured more than 400 iconic racing and rally cars going wheel-to-wheel and several high-profile celebrity appearances as the four Houses of Goodwood fought tooth-and-nail for the Goodwood House Trophy. With intense on-track action backed up by off-track challenges all counting for House points – including traditional school sports day-style events, cocktail mixing, a tug-of-war and even welly wanging – the atmosphere of the event evoked the spirit of good-natured competition that is central to all Goodwood events. An all-star line-up of cars included a high-speed parade of turbocharged Formula 1 machinery – featuring several ex-Ayrton Senna Lotuses and Tolemans – a glorious display of iconic Le Mans 24 Hours racers, the world’s largest Bugatti-only race and the first race to ever feature 1980s cars at

Goodwood – The Gerry Marshall Trophy – ensured a great weekend for all. Among the star names visiting the event were Formula 1 legend Sir Stirling Moss, who was an avid spectator, DJ Chris Evans, Olympic cycling hero Sir Chris Hoy, international model David Gandy and celebrity chef James Martin – who raced his 1963 Morris Mini Cooper S in the Sears Trophy for production saloons on Sunday. The event also featured spectacular Saturday night festivities, featuring a host of entertainment in The Great Hall, live music, circus acts, theatre and a steam fair – all finished off with the largest fireworks display ever witnessed at Goodwood. Lord March said: “What a fantastic way to kick off this new event. The sensational selection of cars and drivers is just about the most diverse we’ve ever had at Goodwood Motor Circuit. From some of the most beautiful 1960s sportscars ever designed to the quite incredible noise of the turbo Formula 1 machines...
